Seminar Parenting: Mendidik Anak Dengan Keteladanan dan Cinta

The seminar "Educating Children with Exemplary Behavior and Love," held on August 11, 2024, at the Community Center RW 05, Kelurahan Sangiang Jaya, aimed to equip parents with knowledge about the importance of role modeling and affection in child education. The methods used included a presentation by a speaker and a question-and-answer session. The results of the seminar showed that consistent application of role modeling and affection can improve the parent-child relationship and enhance parenting effectiveness. The implications of these results highlight the need for parents to integrate these principles into their daily lives to support optimal child development. Participants explored the importance of being a good example in daily life and how role modeling can shape children’s character and behavior. Additionally, the seminar discussed how to create a loving environment that provides emotional support for children's psychological and social development. The seminar aimed to help parents build healthy and harmonious relationships with their children and prepare them to become empathetic and responsible individuals.

Beyond the numbers on women’s representation: Recognition of women’s leadership in global governance

AbstractTo what extent has the glass ceiling in global governance been shattered? To answer this question, we need to look beyond the numbers on women’s representation and study how far women are perceived as inspiring and visionary leaders in global governance. This article offers an analysis of perceptions of inspiring and visionary leadership in global multistakeholder initiatives from a gender perspective. Based on 467 interviews with participants in a leading multistakeholder initiative, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), it presents four findings: (1) respondents identify more men than women as inspiring and visionary leaders, with the difference roughly corresponding to the share of women in leadership roles; (2) respondents tend to ascribe more leadership attributes to women than to men when explaining why they find them inspiring and visionary; (3) both feminine and masculine leadership traits are appreciated in relation to both men and women leaders at ICANN; (4) female respondents identify more women as inspiring and visionary leaders than male respondents. These findings contribute novel insights into gendered perceptions around leadership and the importance of role models in global governance. They also shed much-needed light on the demands and expectations from leadership in global multistakeholder arrangements.

Student experiences of professionalism and role models in an oral and maxillofacial surgery internship: A qualitative study.

Dental students have a clear concept of professionalism and the importance of role models. Our aim was to determine how dental students experience their first oral and maxillofacial surgery internship in terms of their concept of professionalism and their perception of role models. From June to August 2020, semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 22 dental students in their eighth and ninth semesters at the Medical Faculty of the University of Ulm. The interviews were transcribed and evaluated by qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. The students' concept of dental professionalism was shaped by the elements of a good approach to patients, professional competence, and manual skills. This perception was not changed by the internship. Having a role model was seen as an important learning strategy, and role models were perceived in both positive and negative ways. Role models were perceived as positive if they corresponded to the student's concept of professionalism and as negative if they did not correspond to this concept, especially with regard to social interaction or the approach to patients. Students' reactions to discrepancies between their own moral values and the role models' behaviour were characterised by passivity and withdrawal. With regard to potential future careers, positive internship experiences supported student goals, whereas negative experiences raised doubts about them. Supervising dentists may still underestimate the considerable impact of internships, and their awareness of this impact needs to be increased. Students' reactions to conflicts between reality and their own values do not appear to be constructive. One approach to solving this problem may be to include discussions of professional development in curricula.

Without Role Models: A Few Pioneering Women Engineers in Asia

The importance of role models in inspiring and influencing the career paths of young people cannot be overstated, particularly in the fields where certain population segments are under-represented. However, when there are no role models, a few exceptional people become pioneers; these are people who carve out their own paths. Most research in early history of women in engineering focuses on the Western world, with relatively little information from the other parts of the globe. This paper presents the stories of a few Asian women who went against the odds, against social norms and expectations, without role models, and ventured into the field of engineering.

Role models and well-being among trans and non-binary youth

Abstract Background It is important for young people to see themselves represented in stories, on television and in different job opportunities, so they can have an awareness of what is possible. While we often hear the words “representation matters,” research on how representation affects health outcomes of trans and non-binary (TNB) youth is lacking. In this presentation, we will use the Social Cognitive Theory to identify how the presence of role models relates to social and health outcomes of TNB youth across Canada. Methods The 2019 online Canadian Trans Youth Health Survey included 1,519 TNB youth ranging from 14-25 years old. Youth identified as 43.7% trans masculine, 12.3% trans feminine, and 44% non-binary. Analyses explore differences in the relationship between the presence of TNB role models and social and health outcomes using crosstabulations and chi square tests, logistic regressions, and ANOVAs, by age and across gender identity groups. Results Youth with role models had a higher odds of participating in school sports [OR = 1.3, 95% CI: 1.03 - 1.59] and youth who had a role model they want to be like were significantly more likely to report living in their felt gender (p = .036). The relationship between TNB youth's identification of role models and being able to think of something they are good at, living in their felt gender, avoiding public spaces, future school plans, sports involvement, self-rated physical and mental health, emotional wellbeing and general health outcomes across developmental groupings will be discussed. Demographic and contextual factors that moderate the relationship between role models and social/health outcomes will also be presented. Conclusions Youth with role models have better social and emotional well-being. The importance of role models for TNB youth should not be diminished. We will share the implications of our findings for health promotion and public health policy, as well as recommendations for further research.

951 More Than A Checkbox: Importance of Role-Modelling and Visibility Initiatives in Improving Perceptions of Diversity in Surgical Leadership

Abstract Introduction The Royal College of Surgeons of England have committed themselves to championing diversity in surgery in light of recent socio-political events. Although there are now more trainees from underrepresented backgrounds entering the profession, this is not reflected in leadership roles which are key in establishing attitudes and cultures. This study evaluated whether an event showcasing surgeons from underrepresented groups holding leadership positions could improve student perceptions of diversity in surgical leadership. Method Participants attended an online event hosted by a student surgical society, where speakers with surgical leadership experience from a range of marginalised backgrounds highlighted topics of diversity and discrimination in surgery. Pre- and post-event questionnaires comprising Likert scales were completed to evaluate student perceptions of surgeons holding a leadership role from the following underrepresented groups: women (or gender non-conforming), BAME, LGBTQ+ and individuals with disabilities. Statistical significance was assessed using a Mann-Whitney U test with p < 0.05 denoting significance throughout. Results The event significantly increased attendee confidence in the idea of a surgeon being seen in a leadership role from all underrepresented groups evaluated: 9.3% for female/gender non-conforming individuals (p < 0.01), 12.3% for BAME individuals (p < 0.01), 7.5% for non-heterosexual individuals (p = 0.04) and 16.0% for individuals with a disability (p < 0.01). Conclusions Attendees felt significantly more confident in the belief that surgeons from underrepresented backgrounds could hold leadership positions following the event, indicating the benefit of such role-modelling initiatives. More investment is necessary in exploring factors dissuading specific underrepresented groups from pursuing surgical careers and for novel strategies to support these communities accordingly.

High school learners views on benefits derived from attending career talks: Need for sound career guidance

Tertiary institutions in South Africa are experiencing alarming undergraduate drop-out rates. This has partly been attributed to students’ inadequate preparation, and failure to gather information on, and planning for, their careers. The need for sound career guidance at the high school level is key, making the role of Life Orientation (LO) increasingly prominent. The aim of this study was to determine what benefits high school learners derive from attending career talks. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted with Grade 10 learners studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) at a township high school in Mamelodi, Tshwane. Data were collected using a qualitative questionnaire and analysed thematically. The findings demonstrated the importance of role models sharing information on their careers and work experiences. Another finding pertained to the importance of information on diverse careers, for the development of learners’ career self-efficacy as students of STEM in a township high school context. The findings highlight the importance of LO teachers organising career workshops. The study will benefit the Department of Basic Education, businesses, and employers as key stakeholders, by helping to enhance the career development of future employees and entrepreneurs.

How do hospice nurses prepare to give end-of-life care? A grounded theory study of nurses in one UK hospice.

Literature for preparing hospice nurses to deliver end-of-life care is sparse. To investigate how nurses in one UK hospice prepared to deliver end-of-life care in their role. A classic grounded theory approach was used to investigate the experiences of 22 registered nurses in one UK hospice, to discover how they prepared for their role. A total of 17 individual interviews and one focus group were conducted. Constant comparison of data and member checking were performed to establish validity. Findings were synthesised into five categories: the 'shared ideal', feeling good at the job, making a difference, experience/exposure to hospice work and the importance of role models. The shared ideal formed the core category, which explained how hospice nurses feel a sense of 'fit' with their work. The feeling of a nurse feeling well-suited to the work and that there the work was a good 'fit' for them was identified as a core element to nurses' feelings of preparedness to provide end-of-life care.

Research-based occupational therapy education: An exploration of students' and faculty members' experiences and perceptions.

One argument for introducing research in bachelor`s degree in health care is to ensure the quality of future health care delivery. The requirements for research-based education have increased, and research on how research-based education is experienced is limited, especially in bachelor health care education programmes. The aim of this study was to explore how occupational therapy students and faculty members experienced and perceived research-based education. This qualitative, interpretative description consisted of three focus group interviews with occupational therapy students in their final year (n = 8, 6 and 4), and three focus group interviews with faculty members affiliated with occupational therapy programmes in Norway (n = 5, 2 and 5). Interviewing both students and faculty members enabled us to explore the differences in their experiences and perceptions. Five integrative themes emerged from the analysis: "introducing research early", "setting higher expectations", "ensuring competence in research methods", "having role models" and "providing future best practice". Research was described as an important aspect of the occupational therapy bachelor program as it helps ensure that students achieve the necessary competence for offering future best practice. Students expressed a need to be introduced to research early in the program, and they preferred to have higher expectations regarding use of research. Competence in research methods and the importance of role models were also highlighted. Undergraduate health care students are expected to be competent in using research. Findings from our study demonstrated that the participants perceived the use of research during training as important to ensure future best practice. Increasing the focus on research in the programme's curricula and efforts to improve students' formal training in research-specific skills could be a starting point towards increased use of research in the occupational therapy profession.

Interviews occurred before and after self-assessment for IPC competencies. IPC definition themes include understanding/valuing/using team expertise, communication, availability, and belongingness. IPC competency relevance, deeper understanding/heightened awareness, and differences between knowing and doing emerged as IPC definition themes after self-assessment. Contributing to/achieving patient outcomes were hallmarks of personal productivity, alongside completing ‘to-do’ lists and managing priorities. Personal productivity themes after self-assessment included status quo work environments not supporting collaboration and productivity defined differently. Team productivity was thematically depicted as the right person with the right skills required for IPC and IPC leads to productivity. After self-assessments, the importance of role modeling and considering leaving if unable to collaborate arose as team productivity themes. Similar barriers to productivity and IPC emerged: hierarchy, turf protection, inconsistent funding/remuneration, and scope of practice restrictions.

The journey of sexuality after spinal cord injury: Implications for allied health professionals

The purpose of this phenomenological study, which reflected the lived experiences of seven individuals living in Alberta with spinal cord injury (SCI), was to gain insights into how individuals with SCI (a) are ill-equipped after injury with respect to post-injury sexual function education, (b) explore their sexuality after injury, (c) learn about the importance of role models and friends living with similar injuries, and (d) explain barriers to access reasonable care surrounding sexual health and counselling reflective of intersectionality of sexuality and disability, among other factors. The intent is also to provide a basis for others living with SCI to be aware that they are not alone in their experiences as well as inform others, including professionals working in the area of SCI, of what some experiences of living with SCI are. This study uncovered real lived experiences of individuals with SCI and their experience of sexuality and relationships after injury. Recommendations are highlighted with the intention of informing professionals, including counselling psychologists and other health related professionals.

Who is seen to be doing business research, and does it really matter? Gender representation at academic conferences

PurposeGender inequality is evident in many academic practices, but research has often focused on the male-dominated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. This study responds to calls for more work in the business disciplines which have been overlooked by comparison and focuses on academic conferences as a higher education practice. Conferences are manifestations of the research being conducted within the discipline, representing the type of knowledge that is considered valuable, and who the thought leaders are considered to be. This study investigates whether equal representation of women at such conferences really matters, to whom and why.Design/methodology/approachThe research was designed using a critical feminist theory approach. An online survey was disseminated to academic staff and postgraduate students in the 25 top ranked business schools in Australia and New Zealand. A total of 452 responses were received, and thematic analysis was applied to open-ended responses.FindingsEqual representation does matter, for two sets of reasons. The first align with feminist theory perspectives of “equal opportunity” (gender is neutral), “difference” (gender is celebrated) or “post-equity” (the social construction of gender itself is problematic). The second are pragmatic consequences, namely the importance of role modelling, career building and the respect and recognition that come with conference attendance and visible leadership roles.Social implicationsThe findings have implications in regards to job satisfaction, productivity and the future recruitment and retention of women in academia. Furthermore, in areas where women are not researching, the questions and issues that are important to them are not receiving the attention they deserve, and this gender data gap has consequences for society at large.Originality/valueThis study moves beyond simply identifying the under-representation of women at academic conferences in yet another field, to investigate why equal representation is important and to whom. It provides valuable evidence of the consequences of under-representation, as perceived by academics themselves.

Connecting with STEM and Immunology in the Classroom – the importance of Role Modelling

Abstract Connecting young people with STEM and Immunology within the classroom setting can be a challenge. Outreach education and knowledge translation efforts can be supported by appropriate Role Modelling and Contextualisation for students and young people. The purpose of this work was to support improved interest and engagement by young Pacific students within a STEM related context, within the classroom setting using an Immunology based in-class teaching focus. Pacific students remain underrepresented in STEM and health related subjects and courses. An outreach education STEM based knowledge translational programme was specifically designed for Pacific students aged 10–12 years (Year 7 & 8) by an external organisation, and included an outreach activity contribution by a female Pacific Biomedical Scientist. Context specific STEM related Immunology content was shared with the Pacific students in the form of cancer related research work and was targeted to the 10–12 year age group. The growing burden of cancer remains a significant concern for Pacific Peoples living in New Zealand and the Pacific Region. Student feedback in verbal and written form indicated this in-class session was very well received. Students engaged well with the in-class question and answer session involving the Pacific Biomedical Scientist and expressed interest in considering STEM as possible subject options. The importance of appropriate Role Modelling and Contextualization of STEM associated Immunology based teaching in the Classroom in supporting positive and constructive classroom experiences for students, was reinforced by the feedback and interactions outlined in this work.

Developing role models in clinical settings: A qualitative study of medical students, residents and clinical teachers.

To explore how positive role modelling attributes can be developed in students, residents and clinical teachers. The qualitative study using focus group discussions was held at Aga Khan University, Karachi from March to May 2018, and comprised medical students, residents and clinical teachers. Overall 11 focus group discussions were conducted till data saturation was achieved. Content analysis was used to analyse the data which was transcribed verbatim. Of the 116 subjects, 60(51.7%) were medical students, 35(30.2%) were residents and 21(18%) were clinical teachers. Of the 11 focus group discussions, 4(36.5%) each were held with the students and the residents, while 3(27%) were held with the teachers. Five major themes that emerged from the study included definition of role models, attributes of role models, role modelling as a learnt behaviour, challenges in developing role models, and recommendations for developing positive role models. A number of attributes of positive and negative role models were identified by the participants. All the participants including students, residents and teachers appreciated the importance of role modelling in developing professionalism among health professionals and medical students. Factors hindering development and demonstration of positive role modelling were also identified and possible solutions were suggested. Clinical teachers needed to be made cognizant of their role as positive role models in developing professionally competent physicians. The medical institutions needed to develop and implement policies that would enhance positive role modelling by the teachers and facilitate learning of positive attributes at all levels.

O professor como modelo aos seus estudantes: perspectivas da área da saúde

Student education and training in the health professions involve acquisition of general and specific skills and competencies which happens throughout practical experiences under the supervision of teachers or clinical tutors. Supervisor characteristics may influence students and guide them in building their professional identity. In this context, a role model is defined as the professional whose positive qualities are likely to be imitated by the students, as they demonstrated skills and personal characteristics that impress and inspire them. Positive role models exhibit professional expertise, good communication and relationships with patients and students, good teaching skills and, most importantly, personal characteristics such as integrity, compassion and enthusiasm. On the other hand, students seem to be able to recognize undesirable negative attributes as opposed to the positive ones. Our studies suggest that the perception of Brazilian students on models attributes does not differ from what is described in the international literature and that there may not be substantial differences between students from the various health professions on their views. Teachers and preceptors who students consider to be good role models, surprisingly, are unaware that they have such influence, but have similar views as students about the positive attributes of a role model. Given the importance of role models in student personal and professional development, schools must take steps to have positive models prevailing in their faculty and to prevent clinical tutors from expressing behaviours that convey negative qualities. These measures involve teacher training and faculty development activities and appreciation of faculty members for their performance in teaching. However, these measures will only make sense if schools offer their teachers good working conditions and, above all, possess an institutional culture that favours humanized relationships within the academic community.

Church Leaders’ Views of Obesity Prevention Efforts for Children and Youth

ObjectiveTo examine church leaders’ views on the role of faith-based organizations in promoting healthy eating and physical activity in children. DesignQualitative research using semi-structured in-depth interviews. SettingSouth Carolina. ParticipantsLeaders (n = 26) from United Methodist churches (n = 20). Phenomenon of InterestPerceptions of health promotion efforts for children in faith-based settings, including primary health concerns, perceived opportunities, partnerships, and the relationship of these efforts to the overall church mission. AnalysisInterviews were transcribed verbatim and coded using a constant comparative method. ResultsFive themes emerged related to (1) multiple concerns about health issues facing children; (2) existing church structures influencing health behaviors; (3) potential partnerships to address children's health; (4) importance of role models; and (5) the need for a tailored approach. Conclusions and ImplicationsChurch leaders viewed childhood health behaviors as an important area of concern for the church and identified links between physical and spiritual health. They identified multiple existing and potential organizational and community structures as important in improving healthy eating and physical activity. Faith-based organizations can play an important role in developing and delivering health programming for children but desired assistance through partnerships with subject matter experts.
