Effect of information literacy on lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance among journalists

PurposeThis research examined the effects of information literacy on lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance among journalists in Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachSurvey research design was applied to conduct this research. The participants were recruited through a stratified convenient sampling process from the press clubs of four provinces (e.g. Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Baluchistan) and the federal capital Islamabad with the consent of relevant authorities for data collection. An online questionnaire was distributed among these journalists and a total of 1,089 responses were received. The data were analyzed by applying descriptive and inferential statistics in SPSS.FindingsThe results revealed that these journalists perceived themselves as information literate. The information literacy (IL) skills of journalists appeared to have a direct and positive effect on their lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance. In other words, the lifelong learning, creativity, and work performance of journalists increase as their levels of IL skills increase.Practical implicationsThese results generated useful insights for academicians and organizations about the importance of IL in the workplace and its influence on organizational effectiveness and performance in gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. This knowledge might be crucial for media employers to initiate training programs for journalists to impart IL education.Originality/valueThis research would be a worthwhile contribution to the existing research on workplace IL, particularly in the context of journalists' workplace as no such comprehensive study using these variables appeared so far.Peer reviewThe peer review history for this article is available at: https://publons.com/publon/10.1108/OIR-06-2022-0345.

Non-Obvious Connections Between Information Literacy and Online Payments

The importance of information literacy in today’s digital world is increasingly emphasized. This is particularly evident in the context of using digital financial services. This article aims to investigate whether there is a relationship between information literacy and online payment preferences among a student population and whether there are gender differences in online payment habits. An online survey was conducted among students in Osijek examining information literacy and the types of goods they purchase and pay for through online financial services. Of the 408 respondents, the majority were female (86.27%), who were more likely to buy and pay for clothing, while men were most likely to make payments for particular features of video games. Differences were also found in the tendency to make online payments. Because no obvious linear relationships were found between reported information literacy and other variables, a neural network model with a multilayer perceptron (NN) architecture was developed to classify participants according to their reported information literacy level. The best overall classification accuracy of the NN was 73.17%. The NN and its sensitivity analysis revealed some hidden patterns that can help educational institutions develop information literacy and digital financial literacy programs for their students.

Letramento informacional e estilos de aprendizagem: novo olhar sobre o processo ensino-aprendizagem

Information Literacy (IL) consists in the actions of locating, selecting, accessing, organizing, and using information to generate knowledge while aiming at decision-making and problem-solving. Learning Styles (LS) are the preferred ways by which one relates to the learning conditions. Our main argument posits that identifying the LS involved in IL activities can improve educational practices. It also advocates that an information literate student presents higher levels of autonomy and critical thinking. This article is part of an ongoing doctoral research and assumes a narrative literature review character. It presents the concept and importance of IL, the concept of LS and their contributions to the development of new teaching-learning practices. Thus, LS, when identified and applied to IL, promote the subject’s protagonism in the search and use of information. However, bibliographic research showed the scarcity of studies that relate the aforementioned concepts and processes, verifying the need to further discuss the subject and to invest in research that contemplates the interrelations between these processes.

Teaching and its discontents

Teaching is a core role for librarians in academic contexts, although most librarians are not formally prepared to teach and encounter significant challenges in the role, including complex relationships with campus colleagues. The purpose of this research was to explore how community college librarians, an understudied population, understand their teaching role. Online interviews lasting fifteen to seventy-four minutes were conducted with thirty community college librarians who provide information literacy (IL) instruction. Participants were recruited by direct email invitation and were asked questions relating to their instructional practices. Interview transcripts were analysed qualitatively, with a specific focus on participants’ experiences of the teaching role. Participants reported positive relationships with students, and significant challenges in their relationships with disciplinary faculty and administrators. Their lack of formal preparation for the teaching role led to infrequent and informal assessment and evaluation practices. Pre-service education for the teaching role could be strengthened to provide librarians with the skill set and confidence to provide more effective instruction. Instructional quality is critical as the importance of IL is increasingly recognized as key to academic, workplace, and personal success.

Information Literacy in Russia: Survey of DIREKT Project

In this work, we analyze responses of the Russian universities, research institutes and public libraries to survey questionnaire aimed to study the level of understanding and estimate the role of information literacy (IL) in the practices of Russian higher education. The survey was conducted in 2019 among 122 Russian organizations in 30 cities. In this work we study four reference groups: faculty, librarian, student/graduate student and others. We report that 90 % of the respondents emphasize the importance of IL for their organizations, 69 % agree that IL can be easily integrated into training courses of their organization, and 72 % consider such integration necessary. At the same time, only 24 % of respondents confirmed that IL was already well-integrated into the curricula of their organizations in 2019. and 53 % - that this was implemented at the level of individual modules. The majority (80 %) of the survey participants highly appreciate the participation of teachers and librarians of their organization in the development of IL and note the high level of their cooperation. Russian specialists highly estimate their competence in terms of knowledge and skills in the field of IL: 72 % of those who answered this question gave themselves good and very good ratings. Meanwhile, 80 % of the survey participants rated the ability to teach IL only as good and satisfactory.

Experiences of information literacy and mobile technologies amongst undergraduates in times of COVID. A qualitative approach

Purpose The purpose of this article is to analyse the social science students' perceptions of information literacy (IL) and the use of mobile technologies (MTs) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approach Exploratory focus group methodology involving 18 Information Science and Education undergraduates.Findings Students believe that, above all, an information literate person must know how to search for information. Being able to recognise acceptable levels of IL and MT competencies/skills enabled them to detect the scant contribution of the university to IL and the poor support from the library. They routinely use information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the classroom for assignments, presentations, searching and administrative tasks. Conversely, they consider their teachers' competency in the use of mobile devices for academic tasks could be improved. The increase in these shortcomings during the COVID-19 pandemic has allowed students to discover most teachers' attitudinal and technical limitations. Students' suggestions mostly point to improving platforms, teaching methods, teacher motivation and teachers/librarians interaction.Research limitations/implications Research is limited to several IL/MT-related concepts, one university and two degrees. It could be applied in other contexts, larger samples and other stakeholders such as librarians and teachers.Practical implications Need for more IL and TM instruction for students/teachers and greater interaction amongst them and with the library. The authors suggest promoting interdisciplinary seminars on the importance of IL and awareness sessions on ICT for learning.Originality/value This case study addresses students' critical/exceptional experience triggered by the pandemic.

Information-Wise

At Maastricht University (UM), the importance of information literacy (IL) is widely recognised – students require structured support in dealing independently with (academic) information, and encouragement to develop creative and critical approaches when faced with complex questions and sources. IL is especially significant in a problem-based learning (PBL) environment such as that offered by UM, which advocates a constructive, contextual, collaborative, and self-directed approach toward learning and knowledge creation. The project Information-Wise launched in February 2019 and resulted in an evidence-informed IL programme for bachelor students. The ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation) was adopted to organise the development process of the programme. The analysis phase was conducted by gathering qualitative and quantitative evidence. Two literature reviews and a university-wide survey with responses from over 600 bachelor students and about 100 staff teachers resulted in recommendations for an IL programme at UM. The design phase consisted of the development of an IL framework that embraces the PBL vision of UM. The framework consists of four dimensions: 1) Resource Discovery, 2) Critical Assessment, 3) Organising Information, 4) Creation & Communication. In order to translate the conceptual research outcomes and framework dimensions into educational practices, the project team created a developmental rubric with intended learning outcomes (ILOs). In the development phase, a five-step piloting approach was used to design teaching activities and assessments that support students in achieving these rubric ILOs. The constructive alignment approach helped to align these activities with the content of the subject courses in which these pilots took place. Part of the IL programme is an online curriculum consisting of generic and discipline-specific online modules. For the implementation phase, this report presents Do’s, Don’ts, and Don’t knows, which outline the future integration of the IL programme into faculty curricula. The evaluation phase still has to be done.

Patterns of Differentiation of Students’ Competencies: A Comparative Study

The study focuses on the issue of how much information competencies are universal in the globalized, internet-connected world, and/or to what extent their perception depends on local conditions and individual needs. The aim of the project is threefold. First, it offers a comparative analysis of the information literacy skills of Polish and Spanish students, regarding both their self-assessment and belief in the importance of information literacy. Second, it focuses on differences and unique IL needs of students of courses rooted in social sciences and/or humanities. And third, due to these differences, it discusses the role of academic librarians in profiled IL training, integrated with the specific courses. Quantitative methodology was applied. The comparative study covered subgroups of humanities and social science students from Poland and Spain. Competencies in information searching, processing, evaluation, and communication/dissemination were taken into account. The results indicate some common ways of perception of valuing information competencies and major differences in assessment of IL self-efficacy. Students’ reluctance to visit libraries is another argument to enhance profiled IL training being realized in close cooperation of academic librarians and the faculty.

Programa de formação em competência em informação: redes de cooperação entre os sujeitos que atuam em espaços de informação, educação e cultura

Diante daquilo que tem sido registrado no Brasil pela Ciência da Informação sobre competência em informação e perante a escassez de programas de formação de competências em Universidades, apresenta-se como objetivo compartilhar um processo de planejamento desse tipo de programa compreendendo bibliotecários, docentes e discentes envolvidos em ações universitárias. Para tanto, realizou-se um levantamento de artigos científicos em bases de dados de periódicos online, considerando a importância da competência em informação e competência leitora em diferentes espaços de (in)formação e educação, como bibliotecas universitárias, escolares e públicas. Como considerações iniciais e não apenas finais, percebeu-se a importância de envolver em programas de formação profissionais que atuam em diferentes espaços de formação da competência em informação, como bibliotecas universitárias, públicas e escolares. A Universidade torna-se, por conseguinte, uma instituição importante em um contexto de formação de redes colaborativas, ao receber a contribuição de profissionais de diversas áreas que possibilitem o planejamento, implementação e execução de programas de competência em informação que também incluam a competência leitora, possibilitando o desenvolvimento de habilidades informacionais e capacidades de leituras mais especificamente, em estudantes e docentes, de modo a fortalecer os processos de ensino, pesquisa e extensão com a comunidade interna e externa.

The article highlights the role of information and information technology as well as the relationship between information and literacy. This article also studies the impact of ICT in rural areas and examines the awareness of the term like, information, information literacy, computer literacy etc. in the rural communities in Manipur, India. Further, it elaborates the need for information literacy and challenges faced by the rural communities in the global information environment.

Need of Information Literacy in Higher Education

The knowledge economy is based primarily on the production and strategic use of information and knowledge. The ability to produce and use information effectively is thus a vital source of skills for citizens of the world. Library Trends and Technologies in Higher Education Institutes in Thailand: A Study

The shift from traditional libraries to digital libraries has transformed how users access and interact with information. Higher education institutions across the world have realized the importance of information literacy. Mahasarakham University considered to be the educational hub of North Eastern Thailand, was studied for this research. This paper reflects upon the users’ opinion and level of satisfaction about various sections and services provided by the Academic Resource Centre, Mahasarakham University, Thailand. Discusses the information access pattern, preferred format of documents and users’ opinion regarding open access. Traces the advancements and innovations in technology that have had a tremendous impact on the way libraries function and have fuelled Thailand's shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy. The significant findings of the study in the context of library trends and technologies are 34.2% of users used electronic resources every day. E-Books were the most preferred format of document for 65% of users. 12% of users strongly agreed that lack of access to computers make use of e-Resources is the cause of no-development. 37% of users strongly agreed that students are leading users of eresources. 44% of users felt that management should provide the necessary infrastructure for the success of e-Resource development.13% Users strongly agreed that Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilitates quick access to information. 40% of users agreed that the application of ICT reduces workload; 27% of users agreed that “Open access provides larger potential evidence and audience.”

The Association Between Information Literacy and Evidence-Based Practice in Nurses of the Critical Care Units of Public Hospitals, Tehran, Iran

Background: Considering the importance of information literacy in achieving well-documented and reliable information, it is evident that nurses must achieve a high level of information literacy through evidence-based performance. With regards to this, the present study was conducted to determine the association between information literacy and evidence-based practice. Methods: The present research was a descriptive-correlation study. The subjects of the study were 244 nurses working at critical care units of Tehran University of Medical Sciences hospitals. The tool used comprised of three parts: demographic information, information literacy, and evidence-based practice. The questionnaires were completed through the self-report method, and the data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS software 16. Results: The results of the study indicated that scores of information literacy and evidence-based practice were 78.72 ± 16.64 (of 170) and 102.17 ± 20.40 (of 130), respectively. Also, a significant and direct correlation was observed between the researched subjects’ information literacy and evidence-based practice (r = 0.596, P < 0.001). Regression analysis showed that information literacy is a predictor for evidence-based practice in nurses (R2 = 0.4, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings showed that the subjects’ level of information literacy and evidence-based practice is not desirable and can only be considered average. Thus, it can be concluded that through improvement of nurses’ information literacy, who are working at hospitals’ critical care units, one can improve the attitude towards and acceptance of evidence-based practice. This will improve nurses’ clinical practice and will eventually lead to an improvement in community health.

ENHANCING STUDENTS’ MARKETING INFORMATION LITERACY

A principal goal of marketing educators is to prepare students to be successful in their future careers. The marketing education community is beginning to recognize the importance of information literacy as an important component of job readiness. We present details of a content analysis that describes the amount and scope of marketing coverage provided in two business periodicals. Our second study examines how students use business publications and assesses students’ perceptions of their usefulness in enhancing information literacy. The results suggest that some business periodicals provide considerable marketing content; however, many students do not voluntarily take advantage of these resources.

Business News as a Source of Information Literacy in Marketing

Among the proficiencies that marketing students should acquire, information literacy, the ability to gather and apply pertinent information to aid in decision making, is commonly overlooked. In this article, information literacy is explored along four complementary dimensions: instrumental, conceptual, reflective, and symbolic. Furthermore, the importance of information literacy is discussed, and two author-tested class exercises (blogging and live case studies) are presented. The goal is to encourage marketing educators to include business news as an active part of course designs and, thereby, to enhance student knowledge of current business events as well as understanding of their implications in decision making.

A Diagnosis of the Levels of Information Literacy Competency among Social Sciences Undergraduates

Restricted to five Spanish public universities, this paper examines knowledge about information literacy competencies—that is, the objective dimension—among a population of social sciences students, as well as two subjective dimensions: students’ belief in the importance of information literacy, hereafter called belief-in-importance, and their perceptions of self-efficacy, their confidence in their ability to succeed. Common characteristics and substantial differences among students in different degree programs are also investigated. Understanding the factors underlying the one objective and two subjective dimensions and their mutual relationships was a major objective. Finally, common competencies in the three dimensions are provided.

THE ROLE OF INFORMATION LITERACY IN SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: A SURVEY OF TERTIARY INSTITUTION STUDENTS IN BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE

Information literacy (IL) advances the living standards for people and enables informed decision-making which translates to socio-economic development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of IL in socio economic development among students in Zimbabwe. The objectives were to find out how students obtain IL skills; examine the importance of IL to students; examine the relationship between IL and Information Communication Technologies (ICTs); examine the relationship that exists between IL and socio economic development and find out the challenges faced by students in obtaining IL. A survey was conducted in Bulawayo and 191 students were sampled. Data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. Findings revealed that most students acquire IL through lectures and this enabled them to make informed decisions related to socio-economic development The study recommended that authorities in tertiary institutions should ensure enough ICTs to enable IL acquisition for all students.

Finding knowledge on the Internet: implications for the knowledge-driven curriculum

This article offers a critique of Michael Young’s perspective on the Internet as it relates to the knowledge-driven curriculum he supports. I argue that the Internet is a site of both theoretical knowledge and everyday concepts which challenges the differentiation of knowledge that premises much of Young’s writing. Google searches from the perspective of a student and teacher show that theoretical knowledge with vertical links to subject and disciplinary communities as well as coherence built through links between concepts is fairly readily accessed on the Internet. The importance of information literacy for students, the critical need to curate content on the web, as well as the implications for the curriculum of framing ‘knowing’ as encompassing ‘being familiar’ and comprehending’ are highlighted.

This article discusses what are e-books, the possibilities of acquisition and the difficulties of use and access of these resources observed by libraries. The importance of information literacy and its relationship to electronic books is displayed, and how the skills and abilities are used as a turn point is analyzed. Reports of experiences of information literacy and e-books in libraries in United States and United Kingdom are presented with the difficulties and solutions developed related to the location and use of e-books, providing reference to Brazilian university libraries, related to finding and utilizing e-books. Concludes stressing the importance of develop of information literacy in the use of e-books by libraries as a management tool.
