Local myth and facts approach for maximizing oral health promotion training among the school teachers and parents in urban village

Aims: This study aimed to enhancing the oral and dental health service in the community. Subjects and Methods: The program is targeted for the mothers and female teachers of the primary school students in Surabaya. This study uses the total sampling method. Pretest was conducted for the mothers and female teachers of the 1st–2nd grade students at a primary school, Surabaya. It was then followed by a demonstration of caries prediction software in order to increase the participants' awareness of the impact of dental caries. After the counseling session, the knowledge of the participants was evaluated. This was carried out through a posttest. The participants were also given certificates as a form of appreciation. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS V.017 software. Results: Subsequent to the empowerment program, the knowledge of the program participants increased, as seen from the comparison between the scores in pre- and post-tests. Conclusions: The program Local Myth and Facts Approach Apps can serve as an educational means regarding oral and dental health for the parents and teachers of students.

Self-perception of the impact of dental caries on quality of life of school children 11 to 14 years old


 The aim of the present descriptive cross-sectionalstudy was to determine the influence oftooth decay in the quality of life related to oralhealth of students aged 11 to 14 years of the I.E.E. 
 “José Granda” district of San Martin de Porres.For this purpose was evaluated a random sampleof 131 students aged 11 to 14 years old. Theinstrument used was a questionnaire CPQ11-14,which was completed by the students and wasrecorded the tooth decay under field conditionsthrough the index of DMFT. Internal consistencywas assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient.Likewise, the Spearman correlation coefficientand the Mann-Whitney test was performed.Statistical analysis was performed on theSTATA12 software. Was obtained as a result thatthe mean CPQ11-14 was 28.99 (± 16.76). Internalconsistency was 0.91 confirmed by Cronbach’salpha. CPQ11-14 was able to discriminate betweenchildren with dental caries experience and thosewithout (p = 0.0402). The domains of emotionaland social well-being showed a strongassociation with quality of life (p = 0.0583 andp = 0.0205, respectively). Concluding that toothdecay experience negative influence on the qualityof life related to oral health, demonstratingthe need to consider dental caries in strategies topromote oral health of schoolchildren.

Impact of untreated dental caries severity on the quality of life of preschool children and their families: a cross-sectional study.

Untreated dental caries is a persistent oral problem among preschool children. Although there is vast evidence regarding the impact of dental caries on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in this age group, evidence on the impact of untreated caries severity is scarce. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of untreated caries severity on the OHRQoL of preschool children and their families. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 563 individuals in the city of Goiania, Brazil. Data were collected through interviews with parents/caregivers and clinical examinations of their children. The OHRQoL was measured by the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale. Untreated dental caries severity was assessed using validated indices. Other independent variables were socioeconomic, toothache prevalence, and the questionnaire respondent. Statistical analysis involved bivariate comparisons and Poisson regression analyses. A higher prevalence of impact on OHRQoL was found among preschool children with untreated dental caries with clinical consequences (PR 1.31; 95% CI 1.01-1.70) compared to those without caries; those aged 5years (PR 1.47; 95% CI 1.18-1.82), compared to those aged two; and those with a toothache (PR 1.54; 95% CI 1.34-1.76), compared to those without toothache. Moreover, fathers (PR 0.71; 95% CI 0.55-0.92) and other respondents (PR 0.70; 95% CI 0.52-0.96) perceived less impact on the OHRQoL in comparison to mothers. Severe untreated dental caries with clinical consequences had a negative impact on the children's OHRQoL, regardless of toothache and socioeconomic factors.

Periodontal status among patients with type II diabetes in a newly developing country

Background: Type II diabetes is becoming an epidemic among the population of Qatar. Patients with type II diabetes are more prone to periodontal disease. Metabolic derangement and poor quality of life are related to deterioration in the periodontal status. Objective: The aim of the current study is to estimate the prevalence of periodontal disease among patients with type II diabetes in Doha, Qatar. Study Design: This was observational cross-sectional study. Methods: One hundred and eighty patients with II diabetes were included in the study. Data were collected from participant medical records. The dental examinations consisted of a full-mouth assessment including the number of remaining teeth, assessment of periodontal status using the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index: To determine the impact of dental caries on the teeth. Similarly, the World Health Organization community periodontal index was used to determine the periodontal status of the patients. Information on metabolic parameters including glycosylated hemoglobin A1C values was collected from the participants' medical files. Results: A total of 49 (36.6%) participants had periodontal pocket of 4–6 mm, more than a third 46.6 (38.3%) of the participants had one tooth missing, around 52 (29%) patients had filled teeth, more than a third 72 (40%) of the participants had poor oral hygiene, two-third 120 (66.6%) had gingivitis, 71 (39%) periodontitis, and 66 (36.6%) dental caries. DMFT score showed that the majority of participants had decayed teeth 136 (75, 6%), 113 (63, 1%) had missing teeth, and 27 (15%) had teeth with total crown destruction. The mean DMF index was 6.3. Conclusion: Periodontitis was common among patients with type II diabetes in Qatar.

The impact of dental caries and its treatment by conventional or biological approaches on the oral health-related quality of life of children and carers.

The effect of untreated dental caries and the approaches taken to its treatment have not been extensively elucidated in children. To investigate the impact of untreated dental caries on children aged 4-9 years and whether its treatment with either a conventional or a biological approach influenced the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of the children and their carers. Children (n = 110) and their carers attending two specialist centres for treatment of carious primary teeth completed the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale and the Self-reported Scale of Oral Health Outcomes for 5-year-old Children at baseline prior to dental treatment and at 3-6 months following completion of dental care. Dental treatment was provided using either a conventional or a biological approach. Dental caries showed a negative impact on the child and family's OHRQoL (P = 0.001). Children reported difficulty eating (55.5%), sleeping (40%), and avoiding smiling because of how the teeth looked (27.3%). More than half of the parents reported their child had toothache. Parents perceived difficulty eating (40.9%), being irritable (38.2%), and difficulty drinking (30.9%) as being impacts of caries on their child's OHRQoL. In addition, approximately half the parents reported feeling a sense of guilt because of their child's dental disease. Following dental treatment, participants reported significant improvement in their overall health status (P = 0.001). Children's age, gender, or the treatment approach were not statistically significantly associated with changes in OHRQoL of the child or carer. Children and parents who initially reported greater impacts of untreated dental caries demonstrated greater improvements in their overall oral health status (P < 0.0001). Dental caries was associated with negative impacts on children and parents' quality of life. Treatment of caries improved the quality of life of children and families significantly, irrespective of whether the treatment was provided by a conventional or a biological approach.

Impact of dental caries on the oral health related quality of life of urban slum children in Nairobi, Kenya

Aims: Dental caries is a public health concern in many developing nations like Kenya. Slum children often do not have access to oral health care, and their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) remains largely un-researched topic in Kenya. The present study was designed to determine the prevalence and severity of dental caries and its impact on the OHRQoL of a cohort of slum-dwelling children in a Nairobi slum. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, a total of 452 children aged 12–14 years participated. Through a structured interview administered using a pretested questionnaire, data on child-oral impacts on daily performance (Child-OIDP), was collected to provide information on OHRQoL. Intra-oral clinical examination was conducted to assess caries experience using DMFT index. The data obtained was analyzed using STATA version 13.0 (STATA Corporation, College Station, Texas, USA). Logistic regression analysis was used to relate caries experience with OHRQoL. Results: The prevalence of dental caries for the participants was 56.2%, with a mean DMFT of 1.72±2.22. The children who had DMFT scores of 1–3 were 1.5 times likely to report an oral impact on daily performance compared to those who had zero DMFT score (OR = 1.48; 95% CI: 0.89, 2.55). Children with DMFT scores of 4 and above were nearly four times likely to report oral impacts on their daily life (OR = 3.62; 95% CI: 1.51, 7.74). Conclusion: In this study population, dental caries negatively affected the OHRQoL of the children.

Impact of dental caries on quality of life of adolescents according to access to oral health services: a cross sectional study

Aim: This study presents the prevalence of dental caries and its relation to the quality of life of adolescents according to the access to dental health services. Methods: Two hundred and fifty-six adolescents between 15 and 19 years of age participated in the study; they were all enrolled in public schools in a countryside municipality of the São Paulo State. Data related to dental caries were evaluated by the DMFT Index, and OHIP-14 was used for evaluating the quality of life. Mann Whitney and Spearmann correlation tests were also used (p&lt;0.05). Results: A DMFT of 3.09 (±3.30) was found with a higher prevalence among the adolescents who used public dental services (3.43±3.34) compared with those who used private services (2.94±3.28). A statistically significant relationship between the decay component of DMFT with physical pain (0.020), physical disability (0.002) and quality of life (0.017) was verified. Conclusions: A low prevalence of dental caries was observed, and it was higher in adolescents who used public oral health services rather than private ones, evidencing the low influence of oral health on the quality of life of the participants.

Case-control study examining the impact of oral health problems on the quality of life of the families of preschoolers.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of dental caries, traumatic dental injuries (TDI), toothaches, and malocclusion on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of the families of Brazilian preschool children. A population-based, matched case-control study involving 415 pre-schoolers aged 3-5 years was conducted. The case (impact on OHRQoL) and control groups (no impact on OHRQoL) were matched for age, gender, and family income at an 1:4 ratio. Impact on the OHRQoL of a family was assessed using the Brazilian version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (B-ECOHIS). Dental caries, TDI, and malocclusion were diagnosed by three calibrated dentists (Kappa: 0.85-0.90). Data analysis involved descriptive statistics and conditional logistic regression analysis (p ≤ 0.05; 95%CI). There were no differences between the cases and controls regarding age, gender, and family income (p > 0.05). The most frequent responses on the B-ECOHIS among cases were "felt guilty" (68.6%) and "been upset" (48.2%). The following variables were significantly associated with negative impacts on family OHRQoL (cases): caries severity (OR = 6.680; 95%CI = 2.731-16.349), a history of toothache (OR = 2.666; 95%CI = 1.492-4.765), parental rating of the child's oral health as poor (OR: 1.973; 95%CI = 1.072-3.634), and parent's/caregiver's age (OR = 2.936; 95%CI = 1.077-3.478). Anterior open bite was positively associated with OHRQoL (OR = 4.050; 95%CI = 1.333-12.314). Caries severity, a history of toothache, parental rating of the child's oral health as poor, and younger parents/caregivers were associated with impact on the OHRQoL of the families of preschoolers.

Impact of dental caries and its treatment on the quality of life of 12- to 15-year-old adolescents in Benin, Nigeria.

To assess the impact of caries and its treatment on quality of life (QoL) in 12- to 15-year-old children in Benin, Nigeria. This was a cross-sectional study involving 1790 children. Clinical examinations were conducted using the WHO criteria for diagnosis and coding of caries. The Decayed Missing Filled Teeth score of each child was calculated. The child Oral Impact on Daily Performance questionnaire was used to assess the QoL of children with caries pre- and post-treatment. Associations between age, sex, and socio-economic status and caries were analysed using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of caries in the study population was 21.9%. Approximately 57% of children with caries reported negative impact on their QoL pre-treatment. Eating (47.6%) was the most affected domain. The mean pre-treatment QoL score was 8.40 ± 10.34. Four weeks post-treatment, only 1.12% of participants reported negative impact of caries treatment on their QoL. The mean post-treatment QoL score was 0.22 ± 0.91 There was a significant difference between pre- and post-treatment QoL scores (P = 0.0001) with significant changes in all the eight domains studied. Age, sex, and socio-economic status had no significant impact on QoL pre- and post-treatment. Caries had a significant impact on the QoL of adolescents. Its treatment resulted in marked improvement in QoL.

Realization of the principles of the phenotypic prediction in the child caries prevention (Translation medicine experience in dental cariology)

It’s well known that dental caries is one of the common diseases worldwide. Dental caries is manifested by demineralization of tooth tissue and results from carbohydrate metabolism of microorganisms that reside in the oral cavity. While fluoride supplementation has helped reduce caries rate, implementation of modern principles of the translational medicine may also help to reduce the impact of dental caries. Studies carried out in twins suggest that about 80% of factors contributing to dental caries inheritable. Physiological factors and functional tooth resistance are linked with centrifugal transport of dental fluid exchange. The phenomenon of Dental Fluid Transport is suggested to be a primary mechanism of the resistance to dental caries. The present study is intended to identify effective dental caries prohylaxis measures. Accordingly, the possibility of predictive personalized prevention of dental caries is studied on child population. In previous studies the bio-prediction test of dental enamel resistance (TER – test on enamel resistance) prior to dosed etching of enamel surface was used. It helped to identify the period of the year associated with decline of acid resistance of enamel (February - March) which is likely related to vitamin C. Subsequently, and based on these observations, a prophylaxis program was proposed and implemented. The program consisted of a 3 day administration of ascorbic acid in maximal doses for an age-specific group starting at the end of February. Yearly implementation of the program has reduced all the indicators of dental caries and has stabilized them at the point DMF 0.8 for the 12-year-old children. The program has included 100.000 subjects for 9 years. The results of the study have helped us to recommend a time-targeted predictive approach in dental caries prophylaxis programs. Continued efforts should help with: 1. The establishment of unified diagnostic models for monitoring of persons from different dental caries risk groups by means of expanding of the bio-predictors including genotypic, allowing to make reasonable and appropriate diagnostics of preclinical process stages; 2. The development of pharmacy-prevention measures for correction of the decline in dental functional resistance, giving the ability to offer an individual protocol of the targeted personalized predictive treatment to a specific individual.

Do we need more than one Child Perceptions Questionnaire for children and adolescents?

BackgroundIn dentistry, measures of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) provide essential information for assessing treatment needs, making clinical decisions and evaluating interventions, services and programmes. The two most common measures used to examine child OHRQoL today are the Child Perceptions Questionnaire at two ages, 8–10 and 11–14 (CPQ8-10, CPQ11-14). The reliability and validity of these two versions have been demonstrated together with that (more recently) of the short-form 16-item impact version of the CPQ11-14. This study set out to examine the reliability and validity of the Child Oral Health Quality of Life Questionnaires (COHQOL) instruments the CPQ8-10 and impact short-form CPQ11-14 in 5-to-8-year-old New Zealand children, and to determine whether a single measure for children aged 5–14 is feasible.MethodA cross-sectional survey was conducted of 5-to-8-year-old children attending for dental treatment in community clinics in 2011. Children were examined for dental caries, with OHRQoL measured using the CPQ8-10 and short-form CPQ11-14. Construct validity was evaluated by comparing mean scale scores across ordinal categories of caries experience; correlational construct validity was assessed by comparing mean CPQ scores across children’s global ratings of oral health and well-being.ResultsThe 183 children (49.7% female) aged 5 to 8 years who took part in the study represent a 98.4% participation rate. The overall mean dmft was 6.0 (SD, 2.0 range 1 to 13). Both questionnaire versions detected differences in the impact of dental caries on quality of life, with the greatest scores in the expected direction. Both versions showed higher scores among those with poorer oral health. There was a very strong and positive correlation between CPQ11-14 scores and CPQ8-10 scores (Pearsons’s r = 0.98; P < 0.01).ConclusionThe performance of both versions of the COHQOL measures (CPQ8-10 and short-form CPQ11-14) appears to be acceptable in this younger age group, and this work represents the first stage in validating this questionnaire in a younger age group. It also further confirms that younger children are capable of providing their own perceptions of oral health impacts. The acceptability of the short-from CPQ11-14 in this younger age group lends support to its use in children between ages 5 and 14.

The impact of dental caries and trauma in children on family quality of life

To assess the impact of children's dental caries (DC) and traumatic dental injuries (TDI) on parents' quality of life (QoL), adjusted by family income. Parents of 219 children aged 5 and 6 years answered the Family Impact Scale (FIS) on their perception of QoL and data about income. Three calibrated dentists examined the severity of DC according to decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth index, and children were categorized into: 0 = caries free; 1-5 = low severity; and ≥ 6 = high severity. TDI were classified into uncomplicated and complicated injuries. QoL was measured through FIS items and total score, and Poisson regression was used to associate the variables with the outcome. Severity of DC showed a negative impact on the total score and subscales on parental/family activities, parental emotions and financial burden (P < 0.001). TDI showed a negative impact on total score and in some FIS items. The multivariate-adjusted model showed that only the increase in the severity of children's DC (RR = 3.19; 95% CI = 2.36, 4.31; P < 0.001) was associated with a greater negative impact on parents' QoL, while high family income was a protective factor (RR = 0.68; 95% CI = 0.48, 0.95; P < 0.001). The severity of children's DC has a negative impact on parents' QoL, whereas TDI do not. A lower family income might have a negative impact on parents' QoL.

Impact of dental caries on preschool children's quality of life: an update

The literature reports that dental caries can cause functional, physical and aesthetic impairment, often with repercussions on children's general health at an early age. Moreover, recent studies have investigated how caries lesions can compromise children's quality of life. This paper aims to describe the current situation of dental caries prevalence in children and how this oral health disease can impact their quality of life.

Impact of dental caries and dental fluorosis on 12-year-old schoolchildren's self-perception of appearance and chewing

It has been suggested that psychosocial dimensions be used to assess the impact of oral health on people's quality of life. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of dental caries and dental fluorosis on children's self-perception of appearance and mastication. A dental caries and dental fluorosis cross-sectional study was conducted with twelve-year-old schoolchildren (n = 695) in Chapec , Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. A questionnaire to assess dental care and dental habits was applied. Risk factors were identified using unconditional multiple logistic regression analysis. None of the variables investigated was associated with dissatisfaction in relation to self-perceived appearance. Independent risk factors for dissatisfaction with self-perceived mastication included enrollment in a public school, caries in an anterior tooth and at least two posterior teeth, and female gender. By way of conclusion, dental fluorosis had no impact on children's self-perception of appearance. Increased severity of dental caries was associated with greater self-perception of impact on chewing. This impact was greater in public schoolchildren, suggesting that there are different values and perceptions between socially different groups.
