Concepts and Methods of Story telling Al-Qur'an Stories for Early Childhood: A Study of the Book of Kisah Kota-Kota Dalam al-Qur’an by Rani Yulianty

The world of children is always close to the world of stories. However, it is unfortunate that today the stories that are very close to children are imaginative stories so that children are more familiar with the characters of fictional characters compared to the characters and cities that they should really know. Stories in the Qur'an should always be presented to children in a style and presentation that suits them. One of the efforts that have been made is the book Tales of Cities in the Qur'an by Rani Yulianty. This study was conducted using library research method by taking samples from 12 city stories contained in the book. This research focuses on the method of storytelling in the book and its advantages and disadvantages. This research reveals something new in the delivery of stories for early childhood, especially in terms of the story of the cities in the Qur'an. The results of this study indicate that the method of delivering the story of the Cities in the Qur'an by Rani Yulianty uses visualization, pictures, ornaments, and comic methods. The advantages of this book use light language so that it is easy to understand for children, has good visualization by displaying the location and description of the city and many interesting games for children. This book is lacking in terms of not including important lessons or taking conclusions at the end of each city story presented, the author is more likely to convey it in general on the last page of the book.

Pedagogical Technique in Brown’s The Da Vinci Code Contrasted With Gaarder’s Sophie’s World

This article is a comparative and critical study, presenting Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code in relation to Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. The pedagogical matter in Sophie’s World is quite clear, nonetheless, this paper displays the possibility of pedagogy in The Da Vinci Code as well. Both novels contain a form of historical facts and philosophical knowledge with the purpose of educating the audiences. This article aims to analyze The Da Vinci Code and Sophie’s World from a pedagogical perspective in which Brown highlights a variety of notions when analyzing historical facts, to teach or explain to the woman Sophie, things which the reader comes to realize, are strongly desired for her to understand. This helps to display the types of sources of information people have access to nowadays. Gaarder also uses a unique technique to simplify different and difficult ideologies to be easily acquired by readers. Moreover, this paper intends to find answers to the questions of whether Gaarder has succeeded in keeping readers engaged in the imaginary story ‘Sophie’s World’ or whether the pedagogical narration impacts their engagement. There may be a constraint in how far Gaarder can use the pedagogical teaching in his novel. The authors force rhetorical style throughout the novels. This scholastic approach highlights a clear and effective explanation but this seems to take readers directly back to their role as students, which is quite passive. These philosophical interpretations might take readers out of the novel and show that the passage between imaginative and pedagogical teaching is more complex than it appears. Brown, in his novel The Da Vinci Code, uses a conspiracy thriller as a subgenre of thriller fiction to show philosophical interpretations of historical facts.

Touching distance: finder-collector relationships with and experiences of archaeological objects

ABSTRACT Avocational metal-detectorists can be defined as finder-collectors. Many of them curate objects which they legally own. Some finder-collectors have private collections or even home museums consisting of thousands of objects, varying greatly in age. In this article we give a voice to finder-collectors by discussing the results of archaeological object interviews, an initially ethnographic method where the finder-collectors talk about a set of specifically chosen objects while engaging with them during the interview. Many finder-collectors touch and caress their objects while talking about them. It is clear that the physical act of handling the objects is an emotional process for them. According to our findings, most collected objects have a story often possessing an emotional and mnemonic character. Hence, certain objects can awaken memories from the time when they were found by their present owners; they can relate to a specific find site with connected memories of smells and other sensory experiences. And when these objects are curated or displayed these senses come into motion again. The objects in these collections might also possess imaginative stories from a more distant and mythical past, created by their present owners.

Abstract: Building on the inspirational “monthly stories” in Edmondo De Amicis’s Cuore , Francesco D’Adamo’s novels present rich resources for youth navigating through the increasingly dehumanized world. His eighteen children’s books narrate compelling and imaginative stories of heroism while avoiding the paternalistic didacticism for which De Amicis and his imitators are often critiqued. D’Adamo won the Premio Andersen Best Writer Award for children’s literature in 2023.

Children’s communicative capital: Promoting inclusive storying in a diverse preschool community through critical participatory action research

Advocating for inclusive literacy teaching pedagogies, to support 3–5-year-old children’s multimodal and multilingual storying, is fundamental in diverse nations. In Australia, for example, there are over 26% of 5-year-old children connecting with language backgrounds other than English, 7% are Aboriginal, and over 5% are diagnosed with special needs ( AEDC, 2021 ). Arguably, children draw from their own cultural, linguistic, and neuro diverse ways of expressing; hence, visual, gestural, spatial, auditory, and touch-type modes of expression, deserve greater recognition in literacy. Our critical participatory action research advocates for an expanded view of literacy focusing on children’s assets to communicate stories beyond vocal or written versions of story’telling’ in English, by incorporating translanguaging. We consider ‘storying’ to be a more inclusive term that incorporates multiple and multilingual modes in story creation. Our research on Kaurna country (the Adelaide Plains), involved 66 three to five-year-old culturally, linguistically and neuro diverse preschoolers, and their families. They interacted and translanguaged with 10 educators to explore multilingual, Aboriginal, and autistic children’s storying. The 6-month research project questioned: ‘How do diverse children communicate stories and how can children’s storying be encouraged with culturally responsive community involvement?.’ Observation, interview, questionnaire, artefact and reflective journaling data identified diverse children’s storying capabilities, highlighting touch, embodied expression and movement of props, as children expressed imagined stories. Thematic analysis led to the emergence of the concept, ‘communicative capital,’ a component nestled within Bourdieu’s (1991) ‘cultural capital,’ highlighting multiple modes of expression beyond named languages (as per the concept of ‘linguistic capital’). We argue that children’s communicative funds of knowledge and semiotic systems for meaning-making deserve increased value in inclusive literacy education, curriculum development, teacher education, pedagogy, practice and policy, so to embrace and expand the storying strengths of children with autism, First Nations children, multilingual children, and all children worldwide.

“Ours is an Orgiastic, Not an Ecstatic Culture.” Angela Carter Discusses Cultural Expressions of Sexuality in her Non-Fiction

“I found myself, as I grew older, increasingly writing about sexuality and its manifestations in human practice. And I found most of my raw material in the lumber room of the Western European imagination,” Angela Carter wrote in “Notes from the Front Line.” The passage is significant for several reasons. Carter identifies sexuality in its diverse manifestations as her main concern and acknowledges images derived from European popular tradition as the source of her “raw material.” Moreover, she characterises her prose as intertextual and identifies herself as a Caucasian Westerner. It is from this contemporary, Europe-centred perspective that she, first, surveys manifestations of sexuality, and then uses them to create her own—often allegorical—imaginative stories. This paper is concerned with the former stage of Carter’s intellectual endeavour: surveying expressions of sexuality in public discourse from a Western woman’s point of view.

(Practical) Theology: A story of doubt and imagination

Theology as a story of doubt and imagination is to be understood against the background of interdisciplinary social science and in contrast to the traditional paradigm of theology as a system of propositional certainty. The concepts of doubt and imagination are part and parcel of narrative research and can also be linked to postfoundational philosophy. The relevancy of this theological paradigm will be discussed on the basis of the following: (1) It is in touch with its own doubt, (2) It is in touch with its own story (tradition), (3) It can therefore interact with other stories, stories of hope and despair, stories of suffering, stories of power and of marginalisation, (4) It can also imagine alternative stories.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The interaction with ‘other stories’, which is one of the important outcomes of this postfoundational approach, makes it possible for theology to be a humble but important participant at the interdisciplinary conversational table.

Suren Ayvazyan's fiction is one of the remarkable pages of Armenian Modern literature of the latest period and stands out for its subtle psychological penetrations, uncomplicated style of narration, unique manifestations of language thinking. The heroes of his stories, novelettes and novels are presented in different dimensions of space and time: the chaos of the 18th century, the times of the feverish search for "The Armenian Road", pre-Soviet Armenia, economic recovery, and the Great Patriotic War. In those works, although the actions take place in different spatial dimensions, their basin is Zangezur, which apparently completes the miniature of Armenia. For Ayvazyan, the people of his birthplace, its unique colors and aromas were a constant source of enthusiasm and heartfelt inspiration. In the nature of Khndzoresk, the writer searched for the heroes of his stories, novelettes and novels - natural people who were and always remained pure before society and especially before their conscience. The heroes of Ayvazyan's stories and novels have their own prototypes, which the author knew very well and knew in his childhood. They are wise people with years of life experience, people with a thousand and one worries and pains, prominent personalities that generalize the image of time. There is no imaginary story in Ayvazyan's short stories and novels, and the most characteristic thing for a writer is that he is able to find what is distinctive and typical for these people and to make it fictional with great skills. Finally, there is no doubt that it is the right time for S. Ayvazyan's rich literary legacy should be thoroughly and systematically examined in literary studies.

THE MEANING OF THE LYRICS OF THE SONG "YANG TERLUPAKAN" BY IWAN FALS IN THE SEMIOTICS OF FERDINAND DE SAUSSURE

Music is a way to convey messages or communicate using sound to people in different ways. Through music, musicians want to convey messages, explain, entertain others, and use lyrics as a means for the writer to express what they want. Lyrics have a message in the form of words or sentences used to create particular imaginations or conditions in the listener. Songs are also often used as a place to sympathize with the reality of what is happening or imaginative stories. One of the most famous musicians in Indonesia is Iwan Fals. He is a singer and songwriter with pop, rock, country, and folk-pop music styles. Amid the development of the Indonesian music industry, through his songs, Iwan Fals raises social issues in Indonesian life and global life from the late 1970s to the present. Iwan Fals tries to penetrate the boundaries of conventional realism by looking for aspects of reality that have never been shown before. Apart from the character of Iwan Fals' songs, which deal with many social phenomena, he also writes songs with romantic or love nuances where each part of the lyrics has a deep meaning, for example, the song "Yang Terlupakan." "Yang Terlupakan" was rated by Rolling Stone Indonesia magazine as the 42nd best Indonesian song out of 150 best Indonesian songs. "Yang Terlupakan" by Iwan Fals has a profound and robust message about regret for one's past and reality. To analyze the meaning of Iwan Fals' song "Yang Terlupakan," the author uses the semiotic theory of Ferdinand De Saussure. Semiotics, according to Saussure, is the study of signs in social life, including what these signs are and what laws govern the formation of signs.

Quantifying the narrative flow of imagined versus autobiographical stories

Lifelong experiences and learned knowledge lead to shared expectations about how common situations tend to unfold. Such knowledge of narrative event flow enables people to weave together a story. However, comparable computational tools to evaluate the flow of events in narratives are limited. We quantify the differences between autobiographical and imagined stories by introducing sequentiality, a measure of narrative flow of events, drawing probabilistic inferences from a cutting-edge large language model (GPT-3). Sequentiality captures the flow of a narrative by comparing the probability of a sentence with and without its preceding story context. We applied our measure to study thousands of diary-like stories, collected from crowdworkers, about either a recent remembered experience or an imagined story on the same topic. The results show that imagined stories have higher sequentiality than autobiographical stories and that the sequentiality of autobiographical stories increases when the memories are retold several months later. In pursuit of deeper understandings of how sequentiality measures the flow of narratives, we explore proportions of major and minor events in story sentences, as annotated by crowdworkers. We find that lower sequentiality is associated with higher proportions of major events. The methods and results highlight opportunities to use cutting-edge computational analyses, such as sequentiality, on large corpora of matched imagined and autobiographical stories to investigate the influences of memory and reasoning on language generation processes.

This paper aims to clarify the ways of rewriting another American history(alternative America) in Travels in the Scriptorium by Paul Auster. In Travels in the Scriptorium, readers see an old man in a room sitting on the narrow bed. The reason why I focus on the old man in this work is that he seems like a man having false memory caused by the brain’s flaws which we could see are manipulated by brain surgery. As a result of the surgery, his mind is elsewhere, stranded among the figments in his head as he searches for an answer to the question that haunts him. He cannot memorize anything about himself or things that he did in the past due to the brain’s flaws. He is just confined in the room and forced to finish the story of a report on the desk. The report tells an imaginative story of relation between Confederation and Alien Territories in 1830s which could be replaced by the history of American Indian War. In this kind of situation, Auster shows us the potential aspects of replacing(rewriting) factual history with another one by way of manipulating human memories in terms of brain surgery. In addition, the writer Auster may give warning that we could live in the course of manipulated history, as well as be forced to rewrite alternative history ourselves.

The Golden Candle

This story comes from a collection of short stories I wrote this past summer as a Brackenridge Fellow with the Pitt Honors College under the mentorship of Pitt linguistics professor Dr. Abdesalam Soudi. My research during the fellowship combined my interests in linguistics and creative writing by tracing the impact of linguistic discrimination in the college-student population within systems of education and healthcare. Throughout the summer, I conducted a series of focus groups and individual interviews to hear college students’ experiences with language discrimination throughout their lives, which I then crafted into three short fiction stories united under the theme of “The Power of Language.” These stories are amalgamations of multiple informant’s experiences bolstered by my own imaginative story details. They highlight the struggles of both non-native speakers of English and speakers of a non-dominant variety of English, as well as the lack of available translation services in many institutions. These stories also touch on many other complex themes of inclusion, identity, and our perceptions of others. “The Golden Candle” is the second story in this collection.

Frontal alpha asymmetry interaction with an experimental story EEG brain-computer interface.

Although interest in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) from researchers and consumers continues to increase, many BCIs lack the complexity and imaginative properties thought to guide users toward successful brain activity modulation. We investigate the possibility of using a complex BCI by developing an experimental story environment with which users interact through cognitive thought strategies. In our system, the user's frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) measured with electroencephalography (EEG) is linearly mapped to the color saturation of the main character in the story. We implemented a user-friendly experimental design using a comfortable EEG device and short neurofeedback (NF) training protocol. In our system, seven out of 19 participants successfully increased FAA during the course of the study, for a total of ten successful blocks out of 152. We detail our results concerning left and right prefrontal cortical activity contributions to FAA in both successful and unsuccessful story blocks. Additionally, we examine inter-subject correlations of EEG data, and self-reported questionnaire data to understand the user experience of BCI interaction. Results suggest the potential of imaginative story BCI environments for engaging users and allowing for FAA modulation. Our data suggests new research directions for BCIs investigating emotion and motivation through FAA.

Anatomist Hermann Stieve used Nazi victims for his research on the menstrual cycle, but did he also fabricate facts?

PurposeHermann Stieve (1886–1952), director of the Berlin Anatomical Institute from 1935, benefited from the rise of execution numbers during the “Third Reich”. He used organs and tissues from executed women for his histological research on the reproductive organs and investigated the influence of “nervous agitation” on the cyclical changes of endometrium and ovary. It is still controversial how he was able to acquire intimate data on the executed women and it was therefore suggested that some of his data may have been “invented”.MethodsNewly emerged dissection protocols and histological drawings from Stieve’s research, together with archived court records, enable a more detailed analysis of Stieve’s published data.ResultsWe extracted 304 case descriptions from Stieve’s publications. Of these, 88 could be linked with 33 identifiable women and related historical records. Nearly all reported causes of death and/or verdicts of executed women were false. Reported clinical data, particularly the day of the menstrual cycle and uterine bleeding shortly before death, are more difficult to verify. We found non-standardised documentation and possible confusions of cases, which may in part be attributable to war effects.ConclusionStieve actively concealed the fate of the executed women, mostly by inventing imaginary stories. This followed a request by the German and Soviet authorities after 1945 not to publish results from cases of political victims, but only from “dangerous criminals”. Scientifically relevant clinical data were not always reported correctly, but are not necessarily fraudulent as different interpretations of this finding can be suggested.

Is examining children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders a challenge?-Measurement of Stress Appraisal (SAM) in German dentists with key expertise in paediatric dentistry.

This questionnaire-based validation study investigated if the dental examination of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder is viewed by dentists with key expertise in paediatric dentistry as a challenge or a threat in terms of transactional stress theory. The Stress Appraisal Measure (SAM) was used for this purpose and it's feasibility and validity was examined as a first part of a multi-stage process for validation in dentistry with a sample of German dentists. It has hardly been investigated how the treatment of children and adolescents with a disorder from the autism spectrum is perceived by dentists. An online-based survey (39 questions) plus the SAM as an add-on as well as a preceding short story of imagination on the topic (appointment for a dental check-up in a special school) were developed. Via e-mail members of the German Society of Paediatric Dentistry (DGKiZ) received a link which enabled interested members to participate. The majority of the members of the DGKiZ have additional qualifications in the treatment of children and adolescents and further training in the area of special needs care in dentistry. The data analysis was based on the SAM and its subscales. Out of the 1.725 members of DGKiZ 92 participants (11 male, 81 female) fully completed the questionnaire and the SAM. All in all the dentists rated their own psychological and physical stress in course of treating children and adolescents with a disorder from the autism spectrum between less and partly stressful. Although the structure of the SAM could not be fully mapped by means of a factor analysis, the different ratings "challenge" or "threat" could be comprehensibly evaluated after reading the story. The participants rated the situation from the story in general as challenging but not as threatening. Intercorrelations between the subscales of the SAM (e.g threat and centrality) of r = .56 showed that the scales are not clearly independent of one another. According to the transactional stress model, the SAM bases on, stress (perceived stressfulness) arises from appraisal processes (e.g. threat, controllable-by-self) that bring about a comparison between the requirements for the described situation and one's own possibilities in terms of a person-environment-fit. In the hierarchical regression a variance of R2 = .48 could be explained with all six subscales (appraisal processes) to predict perceived stressfulness of the SAM within a sample of dentists. Due to the response rate the results of the SAM are not representative for all German dentists, but it offers an insight into topics of special needs dentistry in Germany that have not yet been examined. Overall, the feasibility and validity of the SAM in the context of mapping cognitive appraisal processes and stress could be confirmed. Taking into account the result that the treatment of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder is seen as a challenge, it is concluded that there is a need to improve the education of dental students and graduated dentists in Germany in the field of special needs dentistry.

This article looks at the storytelling extension method of MBC’s “Chunhyang, You’re in Hanyang”(1996). This is because considering the type of storytelling conversion method can produce meaningful results when converting well-known theories such as “Chunhyangjeon” into video media. “Chunhyangjeon” was produced as a sequel to “Chunhyangjeon” with a story about a new time zone, focusing on Chunhyang and Yumeryu who became adults. It did not transform the story of the original book “Chunhyangjeon,” but expanded the story world with the story of imagination after that. “Chunhyangjeon” is a three-act, eight-chapter (A-H) structure, and each chapter was narrated according to the diagram of “Meeting - Love - Farewell - Suffering - Reunion,” the basic epic structure of “Chunhyangjeon.” In the first part, the main characters of “Mongryeong Parent-Wolmae-Mongryeong,” “Mongryeong Parent- Chunhyang-Mongryeong” and “Byeonghakdo-Mongryeong Uncle” and “Byeonghakdo-Mongryeong -Chunhyang” are maintaining the original characters and story world. The story was expanded by repeating the existing narrative structure of “Chunhyangjeon” and naturally composed the story after “Chunhyangjeon” through conflicts between characters.

Art-based Research on Group Sandplay Therapy for Myanmar Refugee Children Staying in Malaysia

This study is based on the group sandplay therapy that we provided to Burmese Chin children living in Malaysia as ethnic and religious refugees and our analysis of the themes in the children’s sandboxes using an art-based research method. All the participants were Burmese Chin refugee children aged 10 to 13 years old, attending an international refugee school in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Participation was voluntary, with written consent from legal guardians. The sample chosen for the study comprised 12 children, with six males in one group and six females in the other group. Altogether, the children took part in five sandplay sessions, which lasted 120 minutes each. During these sessions, all the participants expressed individual the sandtray and then gathered to share and talk about the scenes they had made in the sand. After each session, it construed the children’s sand scenes, imaginative stories and symbolic image from an analytical psychology perspective and categorized the contents by common themes. As a result, six themes emerged: the loss of a place of life, abandoned children, bystanders, safety bases, and liberation/resettlement. Through the sandplay therapy, the refugee children could express their trauma in a safe, supportive environment. Sandplay provided these children with an opportunity to identify their trauma, independently overcome that trauma, and grow.
