Studies on Costa Rican Vanilloideae: the return of <i>Cleistes rosea</i> and a reaffirmation of <i>Epistephium ellipticum</i>

Subfamily Vanilloideae represents a small fraction of the orchid flora of Costa Rica, and yet our knowledge of this predominantly South American group has significantly increased in the last two decades. Until recently, Vanilloideae was represented in Costa Rica by just two genera: Cleistes and Vanilla, with one and seven species, respectively. Today, up to 13 species of Vanilla are shown to occur in the country, we evidence the presence of a second species of Cleistes and confirm the presence of a third genus Vanilloideae in Costa Rica: Epistephium. The rare Cleistes rosea and Epistephium ellipticum are fully illustrated on the basis of Costa Rican materials with Lankester Composite Digital Plates (LCDP). The typification of Cleistes rosea is discussed and a color illustration is provided of C. costaricensis for comparison.

A new species, Hoya honglenae and the first report of H. acuminata and H. phuwuaensis (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) in the flora of Vietnam

Three species of the genus Hoya (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae) are newly reported for the flora of Vietnam. One species, Hoya honglenae, is described and illustrated as new to science, and two species, H. acuminata and H. phuwuaensis, are reported as new national records known earlier, respectively, in Bhutan, Bangladesh, NE India, W China, Myanmar; and NE Thailand. The new species discovered in Phu Quoc Island (Kien Giang Province) morphologically is most close to H. phuwuaensis, but differs in the entire, straight leaf margin, leaves sparsely white speckled adaxially and dirty purple speckled abaxially, smaller yellow flowers, conoid, obtuse, distally up-cured outer angle of corona lobes, and much longer anther appendages. The paper provides morphological descriptions, data on habitat, phenology, distribution, estimated conservation status, taxonomic notes, a list of studied specimens, and color illustrations for all studied species. Taking into consideration our new data, the genus in Vietnam currently includes 44 species.

NEW RECORD OF <i>CAMELLIA</i> SECT. <i>CAMELLIA</i> (THEACEAE) FOR THE FLORA OF VIETNAM

This study provides color illustrations and describes the morphological characteristics and distribution of Camellia pitardii and Camellia mairei var. lapidea, species formerly considered endemic to China but recently discovered and recorded in the flora of Vietnam.

Superior labrum anterior to posterior lesions: Part 2 - Classification with arthroscopic correlation.

The illustrated review functions as a crucial radiological guide for both radiologists and orthopaedic surgeons. The combination of illustrations, MR and correlative arthroscopic images enhances the comprehensive understanding of labral pathology. The value of the review lies in the presentation of imaging findings and classification, coupled with findings on arthroscopy. This understanding is vital in guiding orthopaedic management for patients, ensuring appropriate treatment strategies.

THE FUNCTION OF ANALOGY IN PIANO PEDAGOGY

The paper explains the role played by the practice of analogical reasoning in piano lessons, especially at the beginner level. The first stage of piano studies is the most important one in raising musicians. In order to develop a young student’s understanding and appreciation of music and piano playing, teachers use interesting and logically connected stories with plenty of entertaining characters, colorful illustrations and imaginative scenes. Comprehensive analogies with images of characters and their adventures used to introduce and expand on musical concepts in working with beginners make complicated playing techniques understandable and acceptable to them. It is very important to invoke students’ imagination and creativity using fantasy, as well as analogies from everyday life, in order to help them to envisage musical images and express them through physical movements. By making progress in piano playing, students also improve their problem-solving skills in the arts, sciences, natural environment and social life.

Review of the endemic Neotropical genus Agenamyia Albuquerque (Diptera: Muscidae) with the description of new species from South America.

Agenamyia Albuquerque, an endemic neotropical genus with two species, has been revised to include three new species: Agenamyia colombiana de Carvalho, Wolff & Fogaa sp. nov. from Envigado; Agenamyia maculata de Carvalho, Wolff & Fogaa sp. nov. from El Retiro; and Agenamyia timida de Carvalho, Wolff & Fogaa sp. nov. from Sopetrn, all localities in Antioquia, Colombia. This review presents an identification key for all species, including color images and illustrations of male and female terminalia. The distribution of all species is mapped and discussed.

A new species of the genus Naddia Fauvel, 1867 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae) from southern China.

This study describes a new rove beetle species, Naddia flavipes sp. nov. from southern China and provides additional morphological knowledge on Naddia hainanensis Yang & Zhou 2010. Line drawings and color illustrations of adult structures and genitalia are provided for both species.

Hand‐drawn anime line drawing colorization of faces with texture details

AbstractAutomatic or semi‐automatic colorization can reduce the burden of illustrators in color illustration production, which is a research area with significant market demand. Texture details in eyes and hair influence the impression of character illustrations. Generally, these details are not expressed in line drawings. Many existing automatic or semi‐automatic colorization methods do not target hand‐drawn line drawings and it is difficult to paint texture details on such drawings. In this paper, we propose the semi‐automatic colorization of character line drawings around faces with texture details. Our method uses a reference image as a color hint and transfers the textures of the reference image to a line drawing. To achieve this, our method uses semantic segmentation masks to match parts of the line drawing with the same parts of the reference image. We create two types of segmentation datasets to train a segmentation network that creates segmentation masks. We transfer texture details to a hand‐drawn line drawing by mapping each part of the reference image to the corresponding part of the line drawing using segmentation masks. We show that our method is more effective for hand‐drawn line drawings than existing methods using qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

Lead and mercury in historical books and their contribution to dust contamination

Historical products are often a source of toxic substances, like heavy metals, that have since been restricted. In this study, the lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) content of 133 books housed in two collections in southwest England (a university library and council repository), and published between 1704 and 2018, have been determined on-site by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Lead was detected in the front panels, text blocks and interior colour illustrations of most books, with maximum concentration of 15,100 mg kg-1, 8680 mg kg-1 and 12,800 mg kg-1, respectively. However, concentrations above 1000 mg kg-1 were generally restricted to books published between about 1850 and 1960. Mercury was detected in fewer cases, but concentrations above 5000 mg kg-1 were found in the red panels, coloured illustrations and red fore-edging of books published in the Victorian era. Mean concentrations of Pb in dusts from council repository shelves (112 mg kg-1) and library shelves (159–224 mg kg-1) and light casings (71.7 mg kg-1) were significantly higher than mean concentrations in household dusts from buildings constructed over the same period (24.8 mg kg-1). The findings suggest that historical books could be a source of Pb exposure where collections are housed or sold and could also be used to improve evaluations of historical indoor pollution.

Primulina sinovietnamica W.H. Wu &amp; Q. Zhang,a new record for flora of Vietnam

Primulina sinovietnamica W.H. Wu &amp; Q. Zhang (Gesneriaceae), a previously known species from Guangxi province, southern China, is newly reported for the flora of Vietnam. Detailed morphological descriptions together with colour illustrations, information on phenology, ecology, distribution, and taxonomic notes are also provided. In comparison to the populations found in China, specimens of this species obtained from populations recorded in Vietnam have little morphological variation, because the site and climatic conditions are relatively homogeneous in the distribution areas. Furthermore, compared with the type specimens in China, the specimens newly collected in Vietnam have less number of cymes and a number of flowers per each cyme, longer bracts, and longer corolla.

\(\textit{Aristolochia austroyunnanensis}\) S. M. Hwang, a new record for the flora of Vietnam

Aristolochia austroyunnanensis S. M. Hwang (Aristolochiaceae), a species endemic to southern China (Yunnan and Guangxi provinces), is newly recorded for the flora of Vietnam. This newly recorded species belongs to subgenus Siphisia and is most similar to Aristolochia petelotii O. C. Schmidt and A. fangchi C. Wu ex L. D. Chow &amp; S. M. Hwang. Detailed morphological description and color illustrations, together with information on distribution, habitat, phenology, and taxonomic notes are also given.

A new subgenus and a new species of Parameira Seidlitz, 1868 (Сoleoptera, Curculionidae, Entiminae)

Parameira (Clypeomeira) subgen. nov. and P. (Clypeomeira) balkei sp. nov. are described. Otiorhynchus echinatus Hochhuth, 1847 and O. echinatoides Reitter, 1913 are transferred to Parameira (Clypeomeira) comb. rev. The synonymy, Otiorhynchus echinatoides Reitter, 1913 (= O. virgo Reitter, 1913 syn. rev.), is established. Diagnostic keys to subgenera of Parameira Seidlitz and to species of P. (Clypeomeira) are provided. Colour illustrations of important morphological characters are given.

The ceramic dishes belong to the category of mass archaeological sources in the study of the Pazyryk culture of the Scythian-Saka time. However, the degree of study of such products leaves much to be desired, although their information potential is beyond doubt. In this case, not only quantitative indicators and qualitative characteristics are important, but also the implementation of the program of interdisciplinary analysis, as well as the history of detection. The article examines the process of accumulating information about the fi nds of the clay vessels at the initial stage of excavation of the sites of the Pazyryk culture. From 1865 to 1929, expeditions led by V. V. Radlov, N.M. Yadrintsev, S.I. Rudenko and other researchers explored the Altai Region. In the course of this work, a lot of information was obtained, which is still in demand today. The results of the first analytical conclusions and their interpretation are noted. Color illustrations of some jugs are given. It is noted that some finds could not be found in the museum collections. There are problems with the level of publication materials, which requires additional archival research.
