Electron-transfer reactions of some derivatives of pentaammine(pyridine)ruthenium(II) and -ruthenium(III)

Preparation of ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) myoglobin and the reaction of dioxygen, and carbon monoxide, with ruthenium(II) myoglobin.

Ruthenium myoglobins have been prepared by the reconstitution of horse heart apomyoglobin with either ruthenium(II) or ruthenium(III) mesoporphyrin IX (MpIX) derivatives. The ruthenium(II) and -(III) myo globins (RuMb and RuMb+, respectively) contain one ruthenium porphyrin/heme binding site; the species are readily interconverted using dithionite for reduction and bromine for oxidation. RuMb binds carbon monoxide to give the known carbonyl complex. Reversible oxygenation occurs readily with protein-free RuII(MpIX) species in dimethylformamide, but RuMb in phosphate buffer is irreversibly oxidized by dioxygen to give RuMb+ via an outer sphere electron transfer mechanism.

The binuclear complexes (NC 5FeLM(NH 3) 5 (L = 4,4′bipyridine, M =Ru, Rh) were prepared by the rapid reaction between M(NH 3) 5L 3+ and Fe(CN) 5OH 3− 2. The compound Na[(NC) 5FeL′Ru(NH 3) 5] (L′ = pyrazine) was prepared by the reaction between Fe(CN) 5NH 3− 3 and ru(NH 3) 5L 2+. Oxidation of Na[(NC) 5FeL′Ru(NH 3) 5] with cerium(IV) or peroxydisulfate yielded (NC) 5FeL′Ru(NH 3) 5. The reaction between Fe(CN) 5NH 3− 3 and Rh(NH 3) 5L′ 3+ produced (NC) 5FeL′Rh(NH 3) 5. Cobalt analogs of the FeRu complexes were prepared by reaction of Co(CN) 5OH 3− 2 with Ru(NH 3) 5L 2+ and Ru(NH 3) 5LL′ 2+. The compounds were characterized by solid state spectroscopic measurements (KBr pellets) in the visible, near infrared, and infrared regions. The wavelengths of the maxima of the metal to ligand charge transfer bands, cyanide stretching bands and ammonia deformation bands of the title compounds, and comparisons with the corresponding bands of their rhodium and cobalt analogs, are used to assign a valence-trapped formulation with localized iron(II) and ruthenium(III) oxidation states to the title com[ounds

Complexes of ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) with tertiary arsines

Ruthenium trichloride reacts with stoichiometric amounts of tertiary arsines in boiling ethanol to give paramagnetic complexes, RuCl3(Ph2RAs)3 (R = Me, Et, Pr, Bu), which react further with 2,2′-bipyridyl(bipy) and o-phenanthroline(phen) to yield brick red crystalline products, RuCl3 (N-N)(Ph2RAs) (N-N = bipy, phen). In the presence of excess arsine Ru(III) is reduced to Ru(II), and trichloro-bridged complexes of the formula [Ru2Cl3(Ph2RAs)6]Cl are formed. These on treatment with carbonylated solutions of rhodium chloride produce yellow crystals of [Ru2Cl3(Ph2RAs)6][RhCl2(CO)2] containing Ru(II) and Rh(I). Several dicarbonyl complexes cis-RuX2(CO)2(Ph2RAs)2 (X = Cl, Br; R = Pr, Bu) have also been isolated.

A study of the ruthenium-2,2′,2″-terpyridine system

The chemical and electrochemical behaviour of the ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) complexes with 2,2′,2″-terpyridine has been studied. Spectrophotometric measurements proved the existence of a protonated ruthenium(II) complex with p K a=2.9. Potentiometric and voltammetric studies showed a difference in the behaviour of the ruthenium(II) complex against chemical and electrochemical oxidation. Potentiometric data showed also that the ruthenium(III) complex may be reduced rapidly and spontaneously.

Aniline complexes of ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) halides

The preparations, i.r. and electronic spectra, and magnetic susceptibilities of the ruthenium(III) complexes A[RuX4-(aniline)2](A = Cs, Me4N, C6H5NH3 or C5H6N, and X = Cl, Br, or I); and of the ruthenium(II) complexes [RuL6]Br2 and RuL4Br2(L = a substituted aniline) are reported. From their spectroscopic properties the compounds containing co-ordinated halide are assigned trans-structures. Values of 10Dq obtained from the spectra of [RuL6]Br2 place substituted anilines between ethylenediamine and water in the spectrochemical series. A compound [C6H5NH3]5[Ru3Br14] has been partly characterised.

Some reactions of hydrazine with ruthenium compounds

Some reactions of hydrazine with pentachloroaquoruthenite(III) and ammine complexes of ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) have been investigated in acid, neutral, and alkaline solution. In neutral solution it has been shown that hydrazine monohydrochloride oxidized hexaammineruthenium(II) to hexaammineruthenium(III). In alkaline solution nitrogenpentaamrnineruthenium(II) was formed, and a mechanism for this reaction is postulated.

Oximidobenzotetronic acid is suggested as a reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of osmium(IV), iridium(III), iridium(IV), platinum(IV) and for separation and determination of palladium(II) and ruthenium(III) in the presence of other platinum metals. Iridium(III) and (IV) can be estimated when present together.

Preparation and infrared spectra of some ammine complexes of ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III)

The infrared spectra of the complexes [Ru(NH3)6]X2 and [Ru(NH3)6]X3, where X = Cl−, Br−, I−, BF4− and [Ru(NH3)5X]X2, where X = Cl−, Br− and I−, have been measured in the solid state between 4 000 – 250 cm−1. Assignments have been made for the observed absorption bands. The metal–nitrogen stretching vibrations were observed between 485–424 cm−1 for the ruthenium(III) complexes but were not observed for the ruthenium(II) complexes in this region.
