Making a global impact had been the talk of Ph.D. students Richard Gaster and Drew Hall since they first began working in Prof. Shan Wang's laboratory at Stanford University. However, building the motivation and making the time to turn theoretical dreaming into a real working product was quite challenging. After learning about the inaugural IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition, the duo was inspired to turn one of their ideas into reality. Their entry, NanoLab: A Hand-Held Diagnostic Laboratory, was selected as the winner of the US$10,000 IEEE Student Humanitarian Supreme Prize, the top award in the competition.
