Introduction to the Special Section on the 2020 Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC)

This Special Issue of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC) includes some of the highlights of the best papers presented at the 2020 Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC), which was held on November 9–11, 2020. A-SSCC 2020 was originally planned to be held in Hiroshima, Japan. However, due to COVID-19, A-SSCC 2020 had to become a virtual conference. As one of the five conferences fully sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, the A-SSCC was in its 16th appearance in 2020 since its inauguration in 2005 in Taiwan. Rotating among Asian countries, the A-SSCC is quickly becoming one of the leading global forums for the presentation of advances in solid-state circuits and system-on-a-chip (SoC). From 2018, this conference accepts field-programmable gate array (FPGA) papers for presentation and demo and allows two-page format papers for submission and publication.

Women in Circuits [Guest Editorial

The fall 2021 issue of IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine , with the theme “Women in Circuits,” follows the tradition of previous issues since 2017, providing exposure for female leaders by promoting their work in circuits and systems on a variety of important topics. The last two years have been an especially rewarding time to be a member of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) and the IC community. Our Society members are the innovation engine for the industry that has been helping to save civilization during the COVID-19 pandemic. Can you imagine what the world would have been like during this time without more than 300 billion ICs with an average selling price of around US$1 that our members design and produce? The importance of our community and technology has become apparent even to those who are not technically inclined.

As one of the five conferences fully sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, the A-SSCC was in its 15th appearance in 2019 since its inauguration in 2005 in Taiwan. Rotating among Asian countries, the A-SSCC is quickly becoming one of the leading global forums for the presentation of advances in solid-state circuits and system-on-a-chip (SOC). From 2018, this conference accepts field-programmable gate array (FPGA) papers for presentation and demo and allows two-page format papers for submission and publication.

Two Successful ACTS Programs Are Held in China [Chapters

Encouraged by the success of the IEEE Advanced CMOS Technology School (ACTS) for 2017 and 2018, the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Beijing Chapter launched ACTS Summer School 2019 on 5 August of last year. ACTS is a joint activity supported by the SSCS and IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS). Student members of the two sponsoring Societies had the opportunity to attend the school free of charge. IEEE ACTS Summer 2019 was sponsored by GalaxyCore. Lecture topics focused on millimeterwave (mm-wave) wireless networks, power management ICs, bioelectronic systems, body channel communication (BCC), and smart sensors. The general cochairs were Milin Zhang, Tsinghua University, Beijing, and Liyuan Liu, Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.

SSCS University of Texas at Dallas Student Chapter Inaugurated in November 2019 [Chapters

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) Student Chapter was inaugurated in November 2019. Together with the UTD, the SSCS Student Chapter presented an introduction to its capabilities and goals during a general meeting on 29 January 2020 at Hoblitzelle Hall in Richardson, Texas. During this meeting, Behnam Pouya, UTD SSCS Student Chapter chair, presented an overview of solid-state circuit applications in everyday life to more than 150 attendees. He also gave the audience an easy-to-understand overview of what the SSCS is as well as its responsibilities and services.

Through the Looking Glass-2020 Edition: Trends in Solid-State Circuits From ISSCC

The International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) is the flagship conference of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society. The theme for ISSCC 2020 is Integrated Circuits Powering the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Era. DL Prof. Patrick Yue Speaks at IMECAS [Chapters

IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Prof. Patrick Yue visited the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMECAS), China, on 12 October 2017. He gave an inspiring talk, "Recent Developments in Visible Light Communication-Applications and SoC Design," which drew over 70 attendees, including IMECAS faculties, graduate students, undergraduate students, and local professionals. After the presentation, many interesting questions were asked and led to a thoughtful discussion. This talk presents two advanced visible light communication (VLC) modulator system-on-chips (SoCs). The first is an IEEE 802.15.7 PHY-I standard-compliant VLC transmitter. The second is an active matrix light-emitting diode (LED) microdisplay driver SoC with embedded VLC function.

2017 Baltimore Colloquium on Flexible and Wearable Electronics [Chapters

Under the auspices of the IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) mini-colloquium program, the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) and EDS Joint Baltimore Chapter hosted their sixth annual Fall Colloquium on 12 October 2017. The topic of this year's meeting was "Flexible and Wearable Electronics." This one-day event featured a panel of three EDS Distinguished Lecturers (DLs) and five local experts. The venue was the American Center for Physics, near the University of Maryland, College Park, campus. Due to the nature of the topic, this colloquium was cosponsored by the IEEE Washington/Northern Virginia Chapter of Engineering in Medicine and Biology.

Women in Circuits Mentoring Luncheon at ESSCIRC [Society News

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Women in Circuits (WiC) Committee hosted a networking luncheon in conjunction with the European Solid-State Circuits Conference (EESCIRC) in Leuven, Belgium, on 12 September 2017. The event attracted over 20 attendees. The conversation flowed, connections were made, and delicious food was consumed on an open-air terrace. The various talks are briefly summarized.

DL Willy Sansen Visits SSCS Poland Chapter [Chapters

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Poland Chapter organized a short course given by SSCS Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Prof. Willy Sansen. The two-day course, Selected Aspects in Analog Microelectronics Design, was held 5-6 October 2017 at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, Poland. The event was organized under the auspices of the dean of the faculty and attracted a large number of attendees, including IC designers from different companies, university researchers, and Ph.D. and M.Sc. students. The event is briefly described.

European Chapter Chairs Meeting at ESSCIRC-2017 [Society News

The Region 8 IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Chapter Chairs meeting was held on 13 September 2017 at the European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC) in Leuven, Belgium. This annual event brings together European Chapter chairs with the SSCS Administrative Committee leadership to discuss recent Chapter events and exchange ideas for future activities. The meeting events are briefly summarized.

Five AdCom Members Elected for 2018-2020 [Society News

Each fall one-third of the 15-member IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Administrative Committee (AdCom) are elected by the IEEE SSCS membership. All Society members, except students, are eligible to vote. The Society Nominations Committee is chaired by SSCS Past-President Jan Van der Spiegel. Five members were elected from a slate of eight candidates to the SSCS AdCom for 2018–2020. The five new AdCom members elected were Edith Biegne, Azita Emami, Daniel Friedman, Payam Heydari, and Vivienne Sze. The biographies of the newly elected AdCom members are presented.

Welcome to the Winter 2018 Issue of IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine! [Editor's Note

This issue of IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine recognizes, and pays tribute to, the 65th anniversary of the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). In addition, as usual, several articles of interest to IEEE Solid- State Circuits Magazine readers, ranging from tutorials to technology overviews, are included in this issue. These include popular columns and tutorials. The goal of the magazine continues to be to provide Society news and information as well as a series of selfcontained resources to keep the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society member up to date with changes in technology while, at the same time, providing reviews of circuit design concepts. This includes contributions from experts describing the current state of affairs and evolution of a particular IC technology. We will also continue to feature articles focused on the contributions of luminaries.
