Professional neuroses

  • V.S Tkachyshyn + 2 more

Neuroses are a group of neuropsychiatric disorders that are based on reversible disorders of the nervous system, which arise as a result of acute or chronic psychological overstrain. Neuroses are one of the most widespread neuropsychiatric diseases in the world. At the present stage, they are also distinguished as an occupational disease in accordance with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The etiological factor in the development of neuroses is a single or prolonged exposure to mental traumas that carry negative or problematic information. The strength of the impact on the psyche is determined not by the physical intensity of the signal, but by the significance of the information. The main factor contributing to the development of the disease is the individual psychophysical characteristics of a particular person. The symptoms of neuroses are divided into two main groups: somatic and psychopathic. Symptoms of neurosis are always present for a long time. They are often painfully perceived not only by the patient, but also their environment, thereby impairing the quality of life of many people both in everyday life and in production conditions. The main clinical forms of neuroses are neurasthenia, hysterical neurosis and obsessional neurosis. The diagnosis of neuroses is based on data from the clinical picture, occupational history, professional journey and additional examination methods that allow you to exclude somatic pathology. Neuroses are easier to prevent than to treat, so their prevention is of great importance. The main areas of neuroses treatment are psychotherapy and other non-drug and drug therapies. Working capacity in neuroses largely depends on the patient’s interest in continuing their work. Determining the degree of disability also depends on the severity of the pathological process.

  • Mar 21, 2023
  • Izvestiya of Saratov University. Philosophy. Psychology. Pedagogy
  • Svetlana L Rudenko

Introduction. The study is aimed at examining the attitude to the disease of persons with hysterical neurosis in the aspect of coherence with the peculiarities of their social competence. Insufficient knowledge of thе problem field is shown, which resonates with an increase in the rate of disability of this contingent. The hypothesis is formulated that the subjects with hysterical neurosis have a disharmonious and maladapting egocentric attitude to the disease, interconnected with a significant violation of social perception. Empirical analysis. In a group of patients with hysterical neurosis, contamination of egocentric and sensitive types of attitude to the disease is recorded. A moderate decrease in the ability to read emotions by facial expressions, posture and gestures, understanding the logic of the development of social situations and anticipating their outcomes was revealed. There is a close feedback between the characteristics of disharmonious types of attitude to the disease, which cause sensitized interpsychic orientation, and a complex indicator of social intelligence. Conclusion. The revealed types of attitude to the disease cause an overestimated egocentric orientation, combined with vulnerability, preoccupation with thoughts about the impression made in connection with the disease. There are difficulties in concentrating on perceptual details, there is a selective fixation on subjectively significant aspects of the content of communication, which hinders social meta-analysis and disadapts in society.

The article analyses certain phases of the Montessori method, conceiving it in terms of infantile satisfaction (jouissance). Capitalising on this form of education, a child’s compulsion and repetitiveness direct the drives of the child towards different areas which begins with the presentation of educational material as an object of desire and leads to the obsession for perfection, and to hysteria in inhibition as didactic exercises having little or no concern for the functionality of the object up to the point of producing a void gap or constitutive lack of the subject- the zero exercise.

The boy to whom things happen: case report of a condition once named “hysteria”
  • Nov 18, 2020
  • NASCER E CRESCER - BIRTH AND GROWTH MEDICAL JOURNAL
  • Ana Rita Oliveira Rodrigues + 1 more

Introduction: Although banished from current mental disorders classifications, the condition formerly known as hysteria has clinical manifestations still puzzling to clinicians. Herein is briefly revised the historical concept of hysteria, as well as, psychological mechanisms underlying some of its current derivatives: conversive and dissociative disorders. Case report: A previously healthy 17-year-old boy presented with sudden onset of total strength loss in the lower limbs. After neurological assessment, the boy was diagnosed with conversion disorder. Two months later he developed trance and possession states requiring hospitalization, and later, dissociative amnesia. Despite psychological distress underlying patient’s symptoms, la belle indifference was also a meaningful issue. Discussion: This study presents a critical reflection about conversion and dissociative disorders and diagnostic challenges arising from their inconsistent and variable clinical features. Conclusion: With this case report, the authors intend to raise awareness to the risk of recurring care demand for care that can elicit iatrogenic harm and delayed proper treatment.

  • Research, Society and Development
  • João Paulo Novelletto Pisa + 1 more

Evolution of the concept of psychopathy in Russian psychiatry from V.H. Kandinskiy to S.A. Sukhanov
  • Jan 1, 2020
  • Zhurnal nevrologii i psikhiatrii im. S.S. Korsakova
  • N.Yu Pyatnitskiy

The development of the concept of clinical signs of «general» predisposition to mental diseases that is defined by the notion of psychopathy is analyzed. The foundations of this concept in Russian psychiatry were laid by V.H. Kandinskiy and V.M. Behterev, hereinafter they were developed by S.S. Korsakov, P.I. Kovalevskiy and V.P. Serbskiy. S.A. Sukhanov and P.B. Gannushkin focused on the separate types of abnormal character that were connected with different neurosis and «degenerative» psychosis. According to S.A. Sukhanov's concept, the anxious-doubting (psychasthenic) character with the amplification of its symptoms transits to psychasthenia, the patological reasoning character (close to paranoic) to delusional disorders (or paranoic psychosis), hysterical character to hysterical neurosis, «morally defective» character to «moral madness». S.A. Sukhanov suggested the systematics of abnormal characters not by one prominent trait but by the presence of several signs from more broad set of traits that generally are typical for the given abnormal character.

  • Dec 31, 2019
  • Cine forum
  • Ying Zhang + 1 more

The Sorrows of Modern Subjectivity: Capital, Infinity Disease, and Werther's Hysterical Neurois
  • Jan 1, 2019
  • Fast Capitalism
  • Christopher Altamura

In this article I analyze Werther, the protagonist of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther . I argue that Werther and his sorrows must be understood within the context of the unique configuration of alienation(s) present in modern societies, characterized by the sui generis combination of capital, egoism and anomie, and asceticism. Further, I argue the sociologically alienating conditions of modern societies create neurotic subjects of repression who lack compensatory symbols of moral worth, which drives them to pursue equivalent signification via fantasy. Finally, I argue that Werther represents an extreme case of hysterical neurosis emanating from the configuration of alienation(s) in modern societies, and that his suicide is best interpreted as a magical, sacrificial act whereby he transfixes his hysterical fantasy in fantasy, allowing him to fantasmatically expropriate symbolic compensation in perpetuity. I end the paper with a brief discussion of what might be done today about the problems posed by the course of the analysis.

  • Mar 1, 2018
  • ITALIA CONTEMPORANEA
  • Vinzia Fiorino

Since the second half of the 19th century, the idea that Jews were particularly subject to specific nervous pathologies, especially neurasthenia, has been the object of a wide-ranging debate among the most authoritative European psychiatrists. The idea that “A neurasthenic trait passes over the whole race” might represent a conclusive and significant phase in this vast international controversy. This normative code was conceptualized primarily by Charcot and in his school. Included in the epistemic framework of hysterical neurosis, such an interpretation exinplained that the ancient image of the wandering Jew, with an uncertain gait and a flaccid body, far from being the result of a divine curse, was the outcome of a racial predisposition aggravated by the practice of consanguineous marriages. The debate became more intense, it became a mere statistical fact, it created some resistance and perplexity, but was strongly acquired by many Jewish intellectuals who, however, attenuated its most negative consequences. This article reconstructs the dissemination and variations of this important normative code, which was re-proposed for many decades: during the Fascist era, for example, an important paradigmatic change left the code virtually undetected, while at the same time repeating it in an increasingly schematic way. In different contexts, the code marked a strangeness of the Jewish people vis-a-vis the purity of the body of the Nation, placing itself at the centre of important dilemmas concerning the model of modern civilization, aesthetic canons, and gender roles.
