Occurrence, fate and distribution of emerging organic pollutants in full-scale hybrid constructed wetlands treating municipal effluents

The presence of emerging organic pollutants (EOPs) in municipal wastewater has raised concerns regarding their potential impact on human health and the environment. Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been identified as an effective and environmentally friendly solution for removing EOPs from municipal wastewater at a reasonable cost. This study investigated the performance of a full-scale hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) treatment system in reducing a total of 59 different types of EOPs. Findings show that the efficiency of the HCWs system in removing EOPs varied significantly depending on the specific physical and chemical properties of the pollutants. Pharmaceuticals (PhACs), personal care products (PCPs), and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) were observed to be more effectively removed compared to bactericides, pesticides, and flame retardants, with removal efficiencies exceeding 54 %. Furthermore, the efficiency of the HCWs system in EOPs removal was observed to be influenced by seasonal variations. Specifically, the removal rate of PhACs in the spring and summer seasons reached 54.08 % ± 3.91 % and 61.04 % ± 8.58 %. The choice of substrate and plant species used within the system exhibited a notable impact on its overall removal efficiency. Moreover, the reduction effectiveness of EOPs across different treatment units varied significantly. Among these units, the bidirectional cross-flow filtration unit demonstrated superior reduction capabilities for PhACs and EDCs, with concentration reductions of 89.62 % and 86.34 %, respectively. Overall, this research emphasizes the importance of considering the specific characteristics of the pollutants and the system components to optimize the performance of CWs for EOPs removal in municipal wastewater.

Assessing lab-scale hybrid wetland performance for pollutant and pathogen removal from high organic loading septage

A laboratory-scale three-staged hybrid constructed wetland (CW) system was operated for the treatment of septage. The Hybrid-CW, covering an area of 1.92 m2, consisted of a sludge drying bed (SDB) of 0.41 m2, a vertical sub-surface flow bed (VSSF) of 0.58 m2, and a horizontal sub-surface flow bed (HSSF) of 0.93 m2. The SDB, VSSF and HSSF beds were operated at an average hydraulic loading rate (HLR) 22.2, 5.2 and 3.2 cm d−1. With an average organic loading rate (OLR) of 28.8 g d−1 the Hybrid-CW confirmed effective removal of BOD5, COD, TS, and TSS by 99.2 ± 0.3% and 99.4 ± 0.2%, 96.4 ± 0.8% and 86.9 ± 2.4%, respectively. The correlation between effluent TS and TSS concentrations with influent concentrations indicated a dependence of TS and TSS removal on influent concentration. Average total coliform count in influent and effluent was observed as 6.3 × 107 and 1.6 × 103 CFU L−1respectively. Average helminthes eggs count in the influent and effluent was recorded as 5 × 107 and 2 × 104 eggs L−1 respectively. With an inlet TS loading of 177.5 g d−1, the hybrid CW system attained 96.4% TS removal and 87% TSS removal. The sludge drying bed, operating with a remarkably high TS loading of 861.9 ± 77.1 g m−2 d−1, avoided clogging and achieved >90% removal rates for total coliform and helminthes eggs along with around 60% for TS and BOD. Furthermore, the system exhibited excellent removal rates of over 99% for both total coliform (TC) and helminthes eggs (HE). Treated septage meets the Indian wastewater discharge criteria for BOD, COD, TS and TN.

Impact analysis of hydraulic loading rate and antibiotics on hybrid constructed wetland systems: Insight into the response to decontamination performance and environmental-associated microbiota

Hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs) are a promising solution for water ecology and environmental treatment, not only for conventional types of water pollution but also for antibiotics. Among the critical parameters for wetlands, the hydraulic loading rate (HLR) is especially important given the challenges of antibiotics treatment and frequent extreme rainfall. To investigate the removal performance of different HLRs on nutrients and antibiotics, as well as the response of antibiotics to nutrient removal, and the impact of HLRs on microbial communities, new HCWs with vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) and floating constructed wetlands (FCWs) in series were built. The results of the study showed that: (1) HCWs are highly effective in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD), NH4+−N, NO2−−N, and total phosphorus (TP) at low HLR (L_HLR), with removal efficiencies as high as 97.8%, 99.6%, 100%, and 80.5%. However, high HLR (H_HLR) reduced their removal efficiencies; (2) The average removal efficiency of fluoroquinolones (FQs) under different HLRs was consistently high, at 99.9%, while the average removal efficiency of macrolides (MLs) was 96.3% (L_HLR) and 88.4% (H_HLR). The removal efficiency of sulfonamides (SAs) was susceptible to HLRs, and the removal of antibiotics occurred mainly in the rhizosphere zone of wetland; (3) High concentrations of antibiotics in HCWs were found to inhibit and poison plant growth and to reduce the removal efficiency of TP by 12%. However, they had a minor effect on the removal efficiency of carbon and nitrogen nutrients; (4) H_HLR altered the diversity and abundance of microbial communities in different compartments of the wetland and also reduced the relative abundance of Bacillus, Hydrogenophaga, Nakamurella, Denitratisoma and Acidovorax genera, which are involved in denitrification and phosphorus removal processes. This alteration in microbial communities was one of the main reasons for the reduced performance of nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

Landfill leachate treatment by a combination of a multiple plant hybrid constructed wetland system with a solar photoFenton process in a raceway pond reactor

The sustainable and green treatment of landfill leachate (LL), produced by municipal solid waste, represents one of the most relevant challenges in the integrated waste management systems. Accordingly, in this work a green solution was investigated by coupling an innovative hybrid constructed wetland (HCW) to a solar photo-Fenton (SPF) process. A multiple layers HCW pilot plant including different medium substrates (sand, solid compost and carriers) and plant species (Phragmites australis, Arundo donax and A. plinii) was designed. The HCW was functionalised with compost tea solution to simultaneously provide high nutrient content for plants and increase the microorganism biodiversity. Process efficiency was investigated using different real LLs (young and mature) in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen compounds, chlorides and metals. Removals in the range 75–95% were observed for all the parameters after ten days of leachate recirculation in the pilot plant. Subsequently, the SPF process was carried out in a raceway pond reactor (RPR) as polishing step, significantly improving COD removal (further 49%). HCW combined with SPF in RPR would allow to meet the corresponding limits according to the final use/fate of the effluent by modulating the main parameters of the process.

Evaluation of the Richness, Species Diversity, and Biosafety of Saprotrophic Fungal Communities in Constructed Wetlands and Biological Wastewater Ponds

The present study was focused on the characterization of the biocenotic diversity of saprotrophic fungi, taking into account the impact of various treatment systems and technological stages as well as the physicochemical properties of wastewater. The biodegradation potential, the hazard posed to humans, animals, and the environment, and the effectiveness of elimination of propagules were evaluated. The most effective elimination of fungal propagules was recorded in hybrid constructed wetland systems with horizontal (HF-CW) and vertical (VF-CW) wastewater flow, especially in the VF-HF objects. The fungal communities present in wastewater from small constructed wetland (CW) and wastewater stabilization ponds (WSP) were dominated by ubiquitous terrestrial molds accompanied by a minimal number of yeasts. The similarity of the species composition of the fungal communities between the treatment plants was generally low, whereas the species diversity together with the population size was very high at the various stages of wastewater treatment. Species with potential pathogenicity to humans and animals accounted for over 45%, i.e., were classified as BioSafety Level 1 and 2 (BSL-1 and BSL-2 groups), and potentially phytopathogenic fungi represented 31.5% of the mycobiota species composition. The dynamics of fungal growth were correlated with the content of organic pollutants and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and with oxygen deficiency. The accumulation of nitrates corresponded to the decline in the frequency of fungi in treated wastewater. The lowest efficiency of the removal of fungi was exhibited by the biological wastewater stabilization ponds.

Long-Term Performance of a Hybrid-Flow Constructed Wetlands System for Urban Wastewater Treatment in Caldera de Tirajana (Santa Lucía, Gran Canaria, Spain).

This paper describes the results that have been obtained in a real case study of a hybrid constructed wetlands system, which has been in continuous operation for over 11 years. The main aim of the study was to understand the long-term operation and efficiency of the system (which is situated in the municipality of Santa Lucía, Gran Canaria, Spain), which comprises two vertical-flow and one horizontal-flow constructed wetlands for the treatment of urban wastewater. The system, which was originally designed to treat a flow rate of 12.5 m3/day, with a load of 100 equivalent inhabitants, has been operating since its inauguration (July 2008), with a flow rate of almost 35 m3/day and a load of 400 equivalent inhabitants. Despite this, the mean total removal efficiencies during the study period (2014-2019) are optimal for a system of these characteristics, as follows: 92% for 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), 89% for the chemical oxygen demand (COD), and 97% for the total suspended solids (TSS). The system efficiency, with respect to nutrient removal, was somewhat lower, resulting in 48% for total N and 35% for NH4. It has been confirmed with this study that this type of system is an appropriate, robust, resilient nature-based solution for the treatment of the wastewater that is generated in small communities, especially in zones with a warm climate, stable mean temperatures, and mild winters.

Development of electrodes integrated hybrid constructed wetlands using organic, construction, and rejected materials as filter media: Landfill leachate treatment.

This study developed microbial fuel cell (MFC)-based hybrid constructed wetland systems using different filter media, i.e., organic (biochar), construction (sand), and rejected (iron particle, concrete particle, and stone dust) materials, and evaluated the performance of the developed systems for treating landfill leachate. The mean ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal percentages within the hybrid systems ranged between 91 and 98%, 90 and 98%, 97 and 99%, 88 and 93%, 93 and 97%, respectively, despite higher pollutants concentration in leachate wastewater. The aerobic environment in the cathode compartment (due to intermittent load) and free-draining of wastewater (from cathode to anode compartment) supported electrochemically inactive, active pollutants removal in the electrodes integrated first stage vertical flow (VF) wetlands. The second stage electrodes integrated horizontal flow (HF) wetlands supported electrochemical-based organic removal and nitrification because of efficient organic removal in the previous VF wetland stages. Nitrogen, phosphorus accumulation percentages in plant tissues ranged between 0.3 and 7%, 0.4 and 14%, respectively. Nutrient removal was achieved through chemical and microbial routes. The biochar-packed VF wetland produced a maximum power density of 20.6mW/m2. The coexistence of unsaturated, saturated media in the partially saturated HF wetland maintained the required environmental gradient between the electrodes and improved operational performance.

Characteristics and applications of hybrid constructed wetlands for low-polluted water: Cased in Bagong River of the Yellow River Watershed, China

Low-polluted waters treated by traditional constructed wetlands were usually difficult especially because of restricted available land use. A hybrid constructed wetlands (CWs) could be applied to remediate low-polluted rivers, which can realize steps complementary to each other that exploit the specific advantages of the individual systems and achieve higher treatment effects. The hybrid CWs covering a total area of 99647m2, was developed to treat the polluted Bagong River, one of tributary to the Yellow River, have been in operation since the end of 2020. This paper introduced the specific construction method of the hybrid CWs, and the water quality of the river could be improved 1–2 grades after flowing through the CWs (according to the Chinese standard GB3838-2002). The treatment capacity was designed to be 65,000 m3·d−1, and the obtained results showed a satisfactory pollutant removal capacity of the hybrid system, with mean removal rates of 57.00%, 20.00%, 48.00%, and 29.00% for ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD), respectively. Meanwhile, >12 species of aquatic birds were attracted to inhabited in the hybrid CWs. The results of correlation analysis concluded that temperature and plant growth were the dominant factors affecting the removal of pollutants in the hybrid CWs system, and the porous concrete as substrate also has obvious phosphorus removal effect. The results showed that the system had relatively stable impact resistance and good ecological benefits under different influent loads, and can better improve water quality and biodiversity. Thus, the hybrid CWs would be a promising and feasible treatment method for low-polluted waters, as adapted to the local context.

Biopurification of dairy farm wastewater through hybrid constructed wetland system: Groundwater quality and health implications

Groundwater is under heavily threat owing to enormous infilteration of dairy farm originated wastewater into it. The anoxic environment in the groundwater due to mixing of organic rich wastewater can produce significant alterations in the groundwater quality. It is therefore necessary to treat such wastewaters before discharging to surrounding areas. Therefore, in this study we evaluated a hybrid constructed wetland (CW) system(40 m2 area) consisting of three beds, i.e. Vertical (16 m2) – Horizontal (18 m2) – Vertical (6 m2) connected in series for the treatment of dairy farm wastewater under typical high humid climate in northern India. Tropical perennial plant such as Arundo donax L. was grown on both vertical beds, whereas Hibiscus esculentus L. and Solanum melongena L. were grown on the horizontal bed of the system.The average purification of TSS, BOD3, total N, and P was significant (p < 0.05) in HF bed and recorded as 92.2 ± 6.1, 95 ± 3.8, 83.6 ± 9.0 and 86.1 ± 10.0% respectively.The average load of BOD3, total N, and P in the influent and effluent was recorded (with no significant differences, p > 0.05) as 7.0 ± 7.17, 1.9 ± 0.7, 0.72 ± 0.5 g m−2 day−1and 0.3 ± 0.2, 0.3 ± 0.2 and 0.04 ± 0.01 g m−2 day−1 respectively.The average values of total biomass content of Arundo donax L. were differed significantly and recorded as 0.31 ± 0.06, 0.43 ± 0.17, and 0.43 ± 0.16 g g−1 fresh wt. in control, VF-1, and VF-2 respectively. Therefore, the hybrid CW system can be efficiently used for the treatment of dairy farm wastewater with implications on groundwater and health. Future research may focus on performance analysis of upgraded combined anaerobic reactor and hybrid CW system planted with series of macrophytes for on-site treatment of high strength dairy farm wastewater in tropical regions.

Hybrid constructed wetlands system for domestic wastewater treatment under tropical climate: Effect of recirculation strategies on nitrogen removal

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the performance of a domestic wastewater treatment system based on hybrid constructed wetlands (CWs) under tropical climate. Moreover, the effect of different recirculation strategies particularly on nitrogen removal was also evaluated, including an analysis of nitrogen balance. The system was composed of a septic tank (pre-treatment), a horizontal subsurface flow and a vertical subsurface flow CWs. Three systems were analyzed: with the ornamental species Sagittaria lancifolia, the cattail Typha dominguensis and without vegetation as control. Evapotranspiration in the CWs was monitored during the warmest period of the year. First, the three systems were operated in serial mode evaluating two contact times of 2 d and 4 d. The three hybrid CWs were able to remove more than 92% of organic matter (COD, BOD5 and TOC), 88% of TSS and 99% (equivalent to 4.5 log10 units) of pathogens (Total Coliforms and Escherichia coli), regardless of plant selection and contact time. However, applying a contact time of 4 d resulted in higher removal of pathogens. Concerning nutrients removal, the combination of a contact time of 4 d and vegetation was required to achieve removal efficiencies over 66% for nitrogen and 90% for phosphorus. Finally, two recirculation strategies (RS) using a contact time of 4 d were evaluated in order to enhance nitrogen removal: RS1 (to the horizontal units) and RS2 (to the septic tank). The results yielded removal efficiencies similar to those obtained during serial operation in the case of organic matter (COD and BOD5) and phosphorus regardless of the RS applied. However, the removal of TSS decreased with RS2 as expected, due to the new load of solids coming from the septic tank. Nevertheless, nitrogen removal was increased over 85% in the hybrid CWs with vegetation, satisfactorily achieving system optimization. The highest nitrogen removal efficiency (≈ 97%) was obtained with the combination of RS2 and the plant species T. dominguensis. However, the use of the ornamental species S. lancifolia was not discarded since it provides an additional aesthetic benefit.

Technological Reliability and Efficiency of Wastewater Treatment in Two Hybrid Constructed Wetlands in the Roztocze National Park (Poland)

The paper presents the results of a 3-year study on the technological reliability and the efficiency of typical domestic wastewater treatment in two hybrid constructed wetland systems (CWs) located in the area of the Roztocze National Park (Poland). The studied objects consist of an initial settling tank and a system of two beds of the vertical flow (VF) and horizontal flow (HF) (VF–HF) type with reed and willow. The wastewater flow rate in the constructed wetlands systems (CWs) was 0.4 and 1.0 m3/d, respectively. During the study period (2017–2019) 20 series of analyses were performed and 60 wastewater samples were collected. Based on the obtained results the effects of pollutant removal and the technological reliability were determined, which were specified with the Weibull method. The average efficiency of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was 96–99%. Slightly lower effects were obtained in the case of total phosphorus (TP) removal (90–94%), as well as for total suspended solids (TSS) (80–87%) and total nitrogen (TN) (73–86%) removal. The analysed CWs were characterised by 100% technological reliability for BOD5 and COD, as well as a good reliability for TSS and TP (87–100%) but slightly lower for TN removal (35–89%). Hybrid CWs of VF–HF type should be recommended to use in protected areas for wastewater treatment and water resources quality protection.

Treatment of tannery wastewater in a pilot scale hybrid constructed wetland system in Arequipa, Peru

Tannery wastewater is an industrial effluent characterized by high and variable concentrations of complex pollutants. These contaminants pose a high risk to the environment if discharged into a body of water without undergoing proper treatment. This study evaluated the performance of a pilot-scale hybrid constructed wetland system (horizontal subsurface flow + free water surface flow) for tannery wastewater treatment. The pollutant removal efficiency of the hybrid constructed wetland was determined, and the chromium bioaccumulation and growth and survival parameters of the macrophytes Isolepis cernua and Nasturtium aquaticum were evaluated. The 5-day biological oxygen demand, the chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids and chromium reached maximum levels (98%, 97%, 97%, 33% and 98%, respectively) after treatment in the pilot-scale hybrid constructed wetland. The average concentrations of the 5-day biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids and chromium were within the discharge limits established by national and international organizations for surface water bodies. The macrophytes had low levels of chromium bioconcentration and translocation, with the growth and survival, especially of Isolepis cernua, revealing a high capacity to adapt to the variability and possible toxic effects of tannery wastewater. In general, the pilot-scale hybrid constructed wetland proved to be a feasible alternative for the treatment of tannery wastewater in an important industrial zone in Peru.

Heliconia stricta Huber Behavior on Hybrid Constructed Wetlands Fed with Synthetic Domestic Wastewater

Constructed wetlands (CWs) represent a highly efficient, eco-friendly and economic alternative for wastewater treatment in decentralized contexts. The adequate selection of the plants used in CWs plays a decisive role in the successful implementation and operation of this technology type. In this work, we studied the behavior of a native tropical plant (Heliconia stricta Huber) for the removal of organic matter and nutrients within a hybrid CW system fed with synthetic domestic wastewater. This hybrid system was composed of two wetlands, a vertical surface flow (VSF-CW) and a horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF-CW), connected in series and being operated with nominal hydraulic loading rates of 12 and 9 mm day−1, respectively. Results evidenced nitrification (nitrite concentration increased up to three times) but not denitrification because nitrate concentration increased in the final effluent. The average removal efficiencies were 86.8%, 96.4%, and 57.0%, for COD, NH4+ and PO43−, respectively. On the other hand, the apical height, basal diameter, leaf length and width increased in relation to initial measurements (between 0.6–7.1%) in plants of both CWs, which demonstrated the ability of the plants to adapt to the operating conditions of the system. This promising performance observed when using Heliconia stricta Huber opens the need for further research and could be particularly interesting in CWs used in tropical areas.

Nutrient removal, methane and nitrous oxide emissions in a hybrid constructed wetland treating anaerobic digestate

A pilot hybrid constructed wetland (CW) planted with reeds (Phragmite australis) and rice (Oryza sativa L.) was designed to treat liquid anaerobic digestate in the Yangtze River Delta, China. The hybrid CW system was composed of four stages: two reed vegetated vertical subsurface flow beds (VSSF: U1 and U2) in sequence, followed by a reed vegetated horizontal subsurface flow bed (HSSF: U3) and a rice vegetated surface flow bed (SF: U4). The average loading rate of digestate was 3.6 m3 per day during the experimental period.The average concentrations of TN and TP in the influent were 379 ± 58 mg L−1 and 29.6 ± 9.2 mg L−1, while the average removal efficiencies of TN and TP were 94.6% and 88.4%. Both TN and TP removal efficiencies in the second VSSF containing zeolite gave the highest removal performance, in which the mass removal rates were 21.3 ± 8.0 g-N m−2 d−1 and 0.99 ± 0.69 g-P m−2 d−1, respectively. Similarly, the highest removal performance for COD was also observed in the second VSSF with a mass removal rate of 79.9 ± 72.4 g-COD m−2 d−1.On the other hand, the average CH4 and N2O fluxes were highest in the first VSSF, at 31.8 ± 12.9 mg m−2 h−1 and 3.7 ± 2.8 mg m−2 h−1, respectively. There was a significant linear relationship between CH4 flux and DOC concentration in the pore water as well as a correlation between N2O flux and TN concentration. Total GWP of the hybrid CWs, derived from CH4 and N2O emissions, was 792.4 kg CO2-eq, of which CH4 and N2O emissions accounted for 66.0% and 34.0%, respectively. Consequently, the hybrid CWs emitted on average 0.93 kg CO2-eq to remove 1 kg COD while the average EF of TNin was 0.34%, suggesting that the use of multistage hybrid CWs could be efficiency-wise and environmentally a promising strategy for anaerobic digestate treatment.

Occurrence of Denitrifying Dephosphatation in a Hybrid Constructed Wetland System and Its Stability

This study was conducted to explore the startup characteristics and stability of a hybrid constructed wetland (HCW) system with a denitrifying dephosphatation process, which was composed of two tidal flow-constructed wetlands (termed T-A and T-B). As the system was operated according to the two-time feeding tidal flow operation mode, denitrifying dephosphatation and nitrification could be respectively enhanced in T-A and T-B, and the HCW achieved ideal simultaneous denitrification and phosphorus removal effects when treating domestic sewage. The introduction of periodical carbon source supplements for phosphorus harvesting alleviated excessive phosphorus accumulation in T-A and increased the storage of PHB within denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms (DPAOs). Subsequently, a stable and efficient denitrifying phosphorus removal effect could be guaranteed to some extent as the HCW system was operated during the test. As the phosphorus harvesting cycle length was 30 d, the mean phosphorus recovery efficiency of the HCW system was 63.97% throughout the experiment. Regarding the typical cycle, the mean TP and NOx--N removal efficiencies of T-A could respectively achieve (97.86±0.70)% and (98.29±2.62)% during the denitrifying dephosphatation process, and the amounts of phosphorus release and PHB synthesis in T-A could also reach up to (1486.29±123.25) mg and (4.43±0.57) mmol·g-1, respectively, during the phosphorus harvesting process. Meanwhile, the utilization rate of the supplementary carbon in the system was (94.65±2.66)%. To summarize, this study offers a new method for simultaneous denitrification and phosphorus removal in constructed wetlands, and expands the development and application range of phosphorus recovery processes.

Removal of Fluoride and Arsenic by a Hybrid Constructed Wetland System.

A pilot-scale hybrid wetland system was constructed for the removal of fluoride and arsenic from synthetic wastewater. After five months of operation, the fluoride and arsenic removal rate were at the value of 65 % and 90 %, respectively. Through calculation, the accumulation of fluoride in plants only accounted for 1.63 % of the accumulation in substrates, and the accumulation of arsenic in plants accounted for 3.3 % of that in substrates. Both the accumulation of fluoride and arsenic in plants were much higher in roots than that in leaves. And for substrates, the accumulation in the first layer was higher than the second layer. The changes of microbial community in the substrate of the wetland during the operation were also analyzed to investigate the effects of operating condition on the microbial community and to study the role of microorganism on the removal of fluoride and arsenic. The results showed that the relative abundance of Firmicutes reduced, while the relative abundance of Proteobacteria increased, indicating that the fluoride and arsenic in solution had a great influence on the microbial community. Findings of this study suggest that the hybrid constructed wetland system may be a promising process for the removal of fluoride and arsenic from synthetic wastewater.

Constructed wetland systems in Poland

Efficiency of removal of contaminants in individual and local constructed wetland systemsoperating in 1995-2000 in Poland was analysed. Individual plants were composed of filterbeds of horizontal subsurface flow planted with willow (Salix viminalis) or reed (Phragmitesaustra/is).The local systems were hybrid constructed wetland systems consisting of horizontal andvertical flow filters. All systems were fed with septic tank effluent.Removal of organic matter and suspended solids was found to be very efficient. However theremoval of nitrogen (especially ammonia nitrogen) in one stage systems was insufficient. Itwas proved that hybrid systems ensure higher efficiencies of nitrogen removal than horizontalflow systems.
