Work-related musculoskeletal disorders: prevalence, associated factors, and impact on quality of life among kitchen workers in hospitality industry, Bahir Dar City, Northwest Ethiopia, 2023.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are considered major public health problems globally, deteriorating the quality of life of workers in various occupations. Kitchen work is reported as among the occupations most prone to these maladies. Nevertheless, prevalence of WMSDs, contributing factors, and impacts on the quality of life of hospitality industry kitchen workers are insufficiently documented in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of WMSDs, their associated factors, and impact on the quality of life of hospitality industry kitchen workers in Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia. An institution-based, cross-sectional study was conducted from 17 April to 17 May 2023. A total of 422 participants were included using a simple random sampling technique. WMSDs were evaluated using an interviewer-administered Nordic standardized questionnaire. The short form-36 questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. The data were collected using the Kobo tool box. SPSS version 26 software was used to perform both bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses. Independent t-tests were used to show the impact of WMSDs on quality of life scales across groups with and without WMSD symptoms. In this study, the response rate was 98.34% (n = 415). The 1-year prevalence of WMSDs among kitchen workers was 82.7% [95% CI: (79.1, 86.3)]. Age group between 30 and 39 years [AOR: 2.81; 95% CI: (1.46-5.41)], job dissatisfaction [AOR: 2.45; 95% CI: (1.34-4.45)], anxiety [AOR: 2.26; 95% CI: (1.12-4.52)], prolonged standing [AOR: 3.81; 95% CI: (1.58-9.17)], and arm overreaching [AOR: 2.43; 95% CI: (1.34-4.41)] were significantly associated factors with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders had a significant impact on all quality of life dimensions, in which the mean SF-36 scores of participants with WMSDs were lower than those of their non-WMSD counterparts. This study revealed that the prevalence of WMSDs was relatively high. Age between 30 and 39 years, job dissatisfaction, anxiety, prolonged standing, and arm overreaching were identified as significant determinants of WMSDs among kitchen workers in hospitality industries. The presence of one or multiple WMSDs, in turn, is associated with worse quality of life dimensions of individuals.

Using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment to examine the effect of the new Hotel Housekeeping California Standard

A housekeeper's job includes a variety of repetitive and strenuous tasks, which can put workers at high risk for musculoskeletal disorders. In 2018, a new standard was implemented in California aiming to prevent work-related injuries of hospitality industry workers. This paper assesses California housekeepers performing regular work tasks during their shifts from 2018 to 2020. Rapid Upper Limb Assessments (RULA) after the standard was implemented found average right-arm scores for scrubbing tasks (M = 6.93, SD = 0.00), vacuuming (M = 6.27, SD = 0.45), and trash-collecting (M = 4.48, SD = 0.50). Forces to move housekeeping carts were also evaluated, with 98% of pushing forces and 73% of turning forces observed within the accepted range. Results show that RULA scores remain high even after the implementation of the standard, with improvements only seen in tasks that required just changing of the method.

The Precariat and the Pandemic: Assessing the Well-Being of Metro Orlando's Hospitality Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Recently, the COVID‐19 pandemic has served as a catalyst for precaritization highlighting the instability plaguing many American workers. As the rapid spread of the virus led to the closure of businesses, both temporarily and permanently, the nation reached record high levels of unemployment. The effects of the pandemic have fallen unequally among different groups forcing women, people of color, and low‐income, precarious workers to endure the brunt of the economic downturn. In particular, the hospitality industry, comprised of those employed in restaurants, bars, event/convention centers, theme parks, and the like, was and continues to be the hardest hit by the effects of COVID‐19. We explore the experiences of 454 hospitality industry workers in the Metro Orlando, Florida area during the COVID‐19 pandemic using data collected using an online survey. The purpose of this research is twofold. First, it seeks to identify the effects of the COVID‐19 pandemic upon hospitality workers in the metro Orlando area across the dimensions of employment status, financial stability, mental health, housing, and food security. The second aim of this research adopts Kalleberg and Vallas' recommendation for analysis of hierarchies in precarious work by identifying differential outcomes across the aforementioned dimensions along the lines of race, gender, and income type (salaried, tipped, hourly) to explore stratification within the precariat. Findings reflect the potentially devastating consequences of precarity and expand upon conceptualizations of the precariat by offering empirical evidence of disparities within this group.

환대산업종사자의 일반적 특성에 따른 학습민첩성과 실패내성 차이 연구

The purpose of study aims to provide basic data for establishing differentiated strategies for human resource development that can improve the level of learning agility and failure tolerance according to general characteristics for hospitality industry workers. In total, 428 cases were surveyed and analyzed by 400 hospitality industry workers who have been working at hotels, resorts, airlines, and travel agencies for more than one year.<BR> The consequences of this research are presented as follows: There were significant differences in learning agility, failure tolerance according to the age and educational background of the hospitality industry workers, and there was no difference according to the type of industry.<BR> This study has the implications of extending the existing study subjects to those working in the hospitality industry and providing basic data for establishing differentiated and customized strategies for human resource development.

Coping Mechanisms of Hospitality Industry Workers in a Tourism Destina-tion during the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic brought massive devastations to the different levels of society. The World Travel and Tourism Council had recently warned that Covid-19 pandemic could lead to a cut of 50 million jobs worldwide in the travel and tourism industry. A study conducted by Oxford reveals that Asia will be vilest to be affected by the pandemic and it would take time to recover its economy (Dogra, 2020). This means a wider and greater impacts to the different industries including the tourism sector. The study aims to explore the coping mechanisms of hospitality industry workers in Boracay Island during the Covid-19 pandemic particularly on their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic and to determine the coping mechanisms of hospitality workers in Boracay Island being affected by the pandemic. The case study method through a qualitative analysis using Robert Yin's approach in the data analysis procedure to explore the data from the experiences of the key informants from the hospitality industry was used. Themes came out from the construct of the key informants like (1) hospitality industry workers experienced mental health, social, and economic issues, (2) The pandemic opens new opportunities and ways to cope with its effects. The output of this research is the proposed Danay, Danay, Escarilla, and Maming Model for Coping Mechanisms of Hospitality Industry workers during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Job Satisfaction in the Hospitality Industry: The Comparative Impacts of Work-Life Balance, Intrinsic Rewards, Extrinsic Rewards, and Work Relations

Job satisfaction is an extensively researched topic due to its positive outcomes for employers and employees. These include increased performance, productivity, achievement, motivation, and work quality as well as decreased employee absenteeism and turnover. This study examined the impact of work-life balance, intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, and work relations factors on job satisfaction for hospitality industry workers across 37 countries using data from the International Social Survey Program. It is the first large-scale global study on job satisfaction for this industry and the first to discriminate across occupational types within the industry. Given large turnover rates in hospitality jobs, understanding the determinants of job satisfaction is critical to improving management practice and organizational effectiveness. Results reaffirmed the existence of considerable work-life conflicts within the hospitality industry from a global perspective. The role of work relations and work-life balance is much stronger in hospitality jobs than for all occupations in general.

Occupational stress and its outcomes: the role of work-social support in the hospitality industry

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to apply conservation of resource (COR) theory and the buffering hypothesis of social support to explore occupational stress and its negative outcomes such as job engagement and turnover intentions for front-line hospitality industry employees in the People’s Republic of China.Design/methodology/approachPrimary data were collected in two waves from 318 front-line employees in a chain of restaurants located in the eastern region of the People’s Republic of China.FindingsIntegrating COR theory and the buffering hypothesis of social support, job satisfaction is found to be a mediating mechanism in the relationships between occupational stress and job engagement and occupational stress and employee turnover intentions for front-line hospitality industry workers. Moreover, the authors found the boundary condition role of work-social support. The relationships between stress and its negative outcomes are weak for the employees receiving high social support at work.Originality/valueThis study calls for researchers’ attention towards the issues of occupational stress focussing on the implications of work-social support for front-line hospitality industry employees.

The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing service industries with the majority of employees are millennial workers. Millennial workers concerned to successful of their career so that they are willing to leave one organization to another to realize career success. Based on that, it is important for organization to help realize employee career success through career development. Moreover, career success can also be realized by the commitment of employees to their careers. This research is a quantitative with multiple regression analysis, which aims to determine career success reviewed from perceptions of career development and career commitment. Respondents in this study are millennial workers who work in hospitality industry which are taken by quota sampling method. The results of this study state that perceptions of career development and career commitment are predictors of career success in millennial workers in hospitality industry. The influence is 44.8% on increasing career success.

To study the health problems of workers in hospitality industry in selected units of Uttarakhand

Hospitality industry has brought tremendous growth to the global economy by providing services ranging from accommodation, sightseeing as well as other services related to the tourism industry. It not only provides employment but also plays a vital role in the economic returns of a country in the form of foreign exchange. Also the interaction with people from different cultures, thus educating people, is brought about by the hospitality industry. Hence, Hospitality industry plays a major role in the development of economies. The complexity of the sector makes it difficult to present an exhaustive view of the situation. The hotels sector employs more than 7.8 million people in the India and is characterized by high job demands and high physical workload. Non-permanent employment patterns, in particular seasonal work, are prevalent (Kristensen et al. , 2005). The sector also employs a high proportion of young workers and migrant workers. This sector covers a wide range of workplaces, more than just hotels. In a study, research design is needed because it facilitates the smooth sailing of the various research operations in a systematic manner. In order to achieve the objectives of the study descriptive design was planned. Some specific health problems to the workers of different departments (front office, housekeeping, food production unit, food service unit and tours and travel unit) of hospitality industry and these health problems were arising due to their service time. When comparison was made between hotel workers in different departments it was observed that in the front office department maximum 56.7 per cent workers respond that they were quite often suffering with the visual fatigue problem due to service while in the department of housekeeping they said that they quite often suffered with the slips, trips/falls problem. On the other hand, it was found that highly 68.9 per cent workers who were working in the food production department reported that they were almost never suffering with ischemic heart disease and 62.9 per cent food service department workers’ said that they almost always suffered with manual handling problem. At the end of the comparison, tours and travel department workers’ felt that 57.9 per cent were quite often suffering with the respiratory infection health problems due to service.

WORK-FAMILY CONFLICT IN HOSPITALITY INDUSRTY EMPLOYEES: AN APPLICATION IN IZMIR

This study investigated the impact of work-Family conflict on hospitality industry workers in Izmir Province. This study tries to identify the variables that hospitality organizations can take to help their employees resolve their work–family challenges. A total of 248 respondents were selected for the study using simple sampling technique. The Instrument used for data collection is Work-Family conflict scale which was developed by Netemeyer, Boles and McMurrian (1996). Demographic characteristics and Logistic Regression Analysis were used to test hypotheses that were generated for the study at 0.05 alpha levels. Finding reveals that there was a significant level of work-family conflict in the hospitality industry in Izmir province. Also, it was found that a significant difference exists between age groups, Title of the employee, genders, having children, married and single respondents` experience of work-family conflict. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the level of family responsibilities of the employees need to be considered before assigning responsibilities.

Intoxicated workers: findings from a national Australian survey

To identify prevalence of alcohol and drug use and intoxication at work. A total of 9,828 Australian workers ≥14 years old. Australia 2007. Work-place alcohol use and drug use, intoxication at work, industry and occupation of employment. Secondary analysis of a large nationally representative survey involving descriptive and weighted multivariate logistic regressions. Differential patterns were identified by drug type, worker characteristics and occupational setting, controlling for demographic variables. Nearly 9% of workers surveyed (8.7%) usually drank alcohol at work and 0.9% usually used drugs at work. Attending work under the influence of alcohol was more prevalent (5.6%) than attending work under the influence of drugs (2.0%), and significantly more likely among young, male, never married workers with no dependent children. Hospitality industry workers were 3.5 times more likely than other workers to drink alcohol and two to three times more likely to use drugs at work or attend work under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Other high-risk industries and occupations included construction, financial services, tradespersons and unskilled workers. More than one in 20 Australian workers admit to having worked under the influence of alcohol and almost one in 50 report attending work under the influence of psychoactive drugs. The rates are higher for some industries, such as the hospitality industry, than others.

Los determinantes de la concentración étnica en el mercado laboral español

This article provides insight on the mechanisms which determine the concentration of immigrant population in certain occupational categories in the Spanish labour market. Using survey data from the Spanish National Immigrant Survey (2007) we have firstly identified ethnic niches where Argentinean, Ecuadorian, French, Moroccan and Romanian workers concentrate. Secondly, we run multinomial logit models in order to assess the impact of human capital, social capital and contextual related variables on the likelihood of working in some of occupational categories identified previously as ethnic niches, namely: hospitality industry workers, routine agriculture workers, construction workers and domestic labour. Our main findings suggest that educational attainment, legal status, access to contacts at the time of arrival in Spain, country of origin, and previous job experience are strong predictors of the presence of foreign labour in the above mentioned niches.

Hospitality Workers' Attitudes and Exposure to Secondhand Smoke, Hazardous Chemicals, and Working Conditions

Compelling reasons exist for labor and public health to collaborate. For example, compared to white-collar workers, blue-collar and service workers are much more likely to be targeted by the tobacco industry and become smokers. The purpose of this descriptive study was to assess if there were ways public health and labor could collaborate to document the health attitudes and needs of hospitality industry workers. Eligible union members were identified through an electronic enrollment file consisting of 3,659 names maintained by the union. The mail survey instrument covered exposure to secondhand smoke, exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials, time pressure and job demands, and work-related pain/disability. Additional questions related to age, gender, race/ethnicity, level of education, employment history, English proficiency, and self-reported health status. Study results demonstrated that important health information could be successfully collected on unionized workers. Survey data showed that union members were a very diverse group who were exposed to secondhand smoke and supported working in clean-air settings. Workers, especially housekeeping staff, characterized their work as being chaotic and demanding, while almost half of workers reported work-related pain. Key to the successful collaboration was establishing trust between the parties and emphasizing data collection that served the information needs of both organizations. Opportunities exist to improve the health and working conditions of this population. Health interventions need to be designed to take into consideration the very diverse, mostly female, and limited English proficiency of this group of workers.

Measuring Tobacco Smoke Exposure Among Smoking and Nonsmoking Bar and Restaurant Workers

This study assesses the validity of hair nicotine as a biomarker for secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure. Although most biomarkers of tobacco-smoke exposure have a relatively short half-life, hair nicotine can measure several months of cumulative SHS exposure. A cross-sectional study of hospitality-industry workers. Hair samples were obtained from 207 bar and restaurant workers and analyzed by the reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD) method. Self-reported tobacco use and sources of SHS exposure were assessed. Higher hair-nicotine levels were associated with more cigarettes smoked per day among smokers and a greater number of SHS-exposure sources among nonsmokers. Number of SHS exposure sources, gender, number of cigarettes smoked per day, and type of establishment predicted hair-nicotine levels. Hair nicotine is a valid measure of SHS exposure. It may be used as an alternative biomarker to measure longer term SHS exposure.

The impact of tobacco use and secondhand smoke on hospitality workers.

Tobacco use has a substantial impact on hospitality industry employees because of the disproportionate prevalence of smoking among these workers and because of the high levels of secondhand smoke to which they are exposed. The severity of this impact is evidenced by the high mortality rates observed among hospitality industry workers from diseases related to tobacco smoke exposure. Several states and localities have begun to enact laws to protect these workers from secondhand smoke exposure. Such policies seem to be effective in reducing exposure and improving health among these workers without causing any adverse impact on business. Occupational clinicians can play a significant role in protecting the health of hospitality workers by supporting laws to create smoke-free workplaces, including bars and restaurants, and promoting smoking cessation in these worksites.

Gender differences in respiratory symptoms—Does occupation matter?

Little attention has been given to gender differences in respiratory health, particularly in occupational settings. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate gender differences in respiratory morbidity based on surveys of hospitality workers, radiographers, and respiratory therapists. Data were available from mail surveys of 850 hospitality industry workers (participation rate 73.9%; 52.6% female), 586 radiographers (participation rate 63.6%; 85% female), and 275 respiratory therapists (participation rate 64.1%; 58.6% female). Cross-tabulations by gender were evaluated by χ 2 analysis and logistic regression with adjustment for personal and work characteristics. Women consistently had greater respiratory morbidity for symptoms associated with shortness of breath, whereas men usually had a higher prevalence of phlegm. There were few differences in work exposures apart from perception of exposure to ETS among hospitality workers. Gender differences in symptoms were often reduced after adjustment for personal and work characteristics but for respiratory therapists there were even greater gender disparities for asthma attack and breathing trouble. Population health findings of elevated symptoms among women were only partially supported by these occupational respiratory health surveys. The influence of differential exposures and personal factors should be considered when interpreting gender differences in health outcomes.

Job satisfaction, lifestyle and demographics of U.S. hospitality industry workers — versus others

A study intended to compare the U.S. hospitality industry employees' work attributes, demographics and lifestyles with employees in four other industry groupings found out that in all three major areas hospitality employees were typified by very specific characteristics. In demographic characteristics these employees came from minority groupings and large families and perceived themselves to be of lower social class. They were less satisfied with their job and life in general and did not think their job to be an important element in their self-accomplishment.
