The puzzle of how Nokia lost the smartphone wars has intrigued recent scholarship. Despite Nokia’s dominant position in the mobile phone industry and its technological capabilities and reputation for strategic agility, it was completely wiped out from the market, only a few years after the launch of Apple’s iPhone. The article provides a comparative, historical and institutional account on the smartphone industry by focusing on three key players: Nokia, Apple, and Samsung. This perspective enriches earlier accounts that were overly focused on explaining Nokia’s decline by looking at internal organisational design and conflicts. We propose a two-pronged explanation focused on the reconfiguration of industry platforms and financialisation. The article suggests that single company histories could be enriched by integrating a comparative perspective that examines additional cases. We discuss opportunities for further research to understand how success or failure in technological innovation is embedded in a wider societal and institutional context.

Risk assessment when granting credit to non-financial legal entities

Purpose: This study aimed to verify risk assessment procedures when granting credit by a legal entity via financing in negotiations with its customers. Methodology: A documentary approach was used, emphasizing qualitative analysis, during the experimental study conducted at an XYZ organization linked to information technology. Results: They point out that the credit score and rating score, established through the evaluation stages, taking into account the company's history, documentation, guarantees, financial health, cash flow, indebtedness, corporate governance, and market prospects, enable the risk classification of their analyzed clients, ranging from AAA for the "alpha" client to D for the "beta" client. This result made it possible to deduce that credit assessment is appropriate automation in financing decisions for commercial activities, capable of promoting financial flexibility and commercial agility. Customer risk classification is therefore seen as a fundamental tool for improving XYZ's financial decisions, minimizing default risks, and guaranteeing the financial security of its commercial operations, resulting from establishing risk scores for both defaulting and non-defaulting companies. Contributions of the Study: This study makes a relevant theoretical contribution to the field of research by highlighting the importance of validating the criteria used in granting financing, as well as the contextual factors that can affect decisions. The practical contribution of analyzing a non-financial institution under the pandemic context and how they minimize their default by establishing credit analysis mechanisms provides improvements and consequently greater security as lenders.

Financialization the Swedish way: How Vonovia became the largest owner of former public housing estates through transaction pathways and calculative practices

ABSTRACT The Swedish rental housing market has been in transition. The once dominating municipal public housing sector has been steadily decreasing. International firms have increasingly taken over rental housing in so-called socially deprived areas. This article analyzes the financialization of the former public housing stock. It traces activities in two housing estates and outlines the history and operations of venture capital-based real estate companies focusing on deprived areas in Sweden. These companies have upgraded multifamily homes and thus increased rents, which resulted in large profits and a decrease in the affordable housing stock. In this new reality, venture capital actors have taken advantage of contextual conditions and applied powerful calculative devices. Drawing on studies of financialization as a socio-technical process, the article contributes to knowledge by de-mystifying financialization through a detailed study of specific practices undertaken by international investors who acquire former public housing units in Sweden.

Investing in a Foreign Startup Company: Luckin Coffee Inc.

Many foreign companies, particularly from emerging markets, have been listed on the US stock markets as a form of American depositary receipt or share (ADRs or ADS) in recent years. Although those US-listed foreign stocks provide a great opportunity for domestic investors to diversify their portfolios, they could also add additional risks to investors unfamiliar with those companies’ business strategies, corporate governance, investor protection, and accounting or audit practices in their home countries. In this case, we introduce Luckin Coffee Inc., a Chinese startup coffeehouse chain that went public on the Nasdaq in 2019. This case aims to guide students in evaluating a foreign startup company’s investment by examining its business strategies, operating performance, corporate governance, and auditing practices when limited company history and financial data are available. It also allows students to research companies’ filings to identify useful information for investment decisions.

Candi, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java is a Small and Medium Enterprise (UKM) owned by Pak Sulaiman which operates in the food sector, namely salted eggs. Salted eggs produced by UD. Adon Jaya has an interesting innovation where the salted eggs have different flavors and processing methods, such as original, fried, grilled and oven flavoured. Daily sales can reach 400 to 500 salted eggs with an income of IDR 16,000,000 to IDR 18,000,000 per month with a profit percentage of 31%. The research objective to be achieved in accordance with the research questions explained above is to find out, analyze and answer how the application of target costing affects production cost efficiency and increasing business profits at UD. Adon Jaya. This research took informants from UD owners. Adon Jaya, namely Mr Sulaiman and production employee Mas Zaky. In its implementation in the field, this research took secondary data including company history, financial and sales report data, as well as an explanation of the salted egg production process. The type of research that will be used is qualitative methods. The analysis technique used is comparative analysis between manual calculations used by UD. Adon Jaya with calculations that apply target costing carried out by the author. These results show that implementing target costing can streamline production costs by 12%, so that the resulting profit also increases 37%. The results of the analysis findings conclude that the application of target costing at UD. Adon Jaya has a positive influence by streamlining production costs so as to increase profits.

The roles of history in accomplishing digital transformation: a dynamic capabilities perspective

ABSTRACT Strategy research on the uses of history in organisations have mushroomed in the recent years. While one of the main uses of history is to accommodate strategic change, little is known about the historical dynamics underpinning this process. In this study, we used the dynamic capabilities theoretical perspective to argue that the managerial ability to strategically use history is a factor related to successful strategic change. A case study of the digital transformation of a multinational ICT company was carried out to explore the strategic use of history. The company's history portrays a series of critical events which served as a basis to theorise the narrative of these past events in accomplishing digital transformation. We provided in-depth discussion of the organisation behaviours that preceded this strategic change. We contribute to literature by discussing the role of specific history-oriented practices in accomplishing digital transformation and their relationship with two emerging history-based managerial abilities.

Gated recurrent unit network: A promising approach to corporate default prediction

AbstractThis paper presents a promising approach using gated recurrent unit (GRU) network to predict bankruptcy based on the whole sequence of financial statements of the companies listed on an unregulated market. This approach contrasts with the traditional literature where default prediction is usually tackled with methods that do not fully account for a company's history. The GRU network can be used to model long‐term dependencies thanks to its update and reset gates, which prevent the vanishing gradient problem and decide how much of the past information is relevant for predicting a default. This aspect may be of utmost importance in alternative markets where the signal detection problem is particularly strong. The performance of the GRU network is compared against the performance of other standard machine learning methods including Cox proportional hazards, gradient‐boosted Cox proportional hazards model, extreme gradient boosting, random survival forest, and standard recurrent neural networks on the basis of a broad selection of performance metrics. The GRU network not only outperforms standard machine learning methods in out‐of‐sample forecasts but also seems to be more robust in terms of in‐ versus out‐of‐sample performance.

The aim of this study is to determine the genre status and identify genre features of the “Company History” subsection on the corporate website. It has been estab­lished that the corporate website is a hypergenre, its sections are genres, and subsections are subgenres. Pragmatic, media-related, structural-semantic, and stylistic-linguistic subgenre parameters of the “Company History” subsection are examined. A comprehensive initial communicative goal of this subsection is identified: to shape a positive image, create a success­ful brand, and strengthen trust in the company. The research results contribute to under­standing the structural and compositional features of a corporate website, its genre specificity, and the mechanisms of presentation in Internet communication.

The goal of this study is to determine the significant influence, both concurrently and partially, of the Work Discipline variable and the Organizational Culture variable on the Employee Performance variable, as well as to determine which of the Work Discipline variables and the Organizational Culture variable has the most dominant influence. This research employs explanatory research. Primary data is collectedthrough questionnaires, interviews, observations, and documentation, whereas secondary data is the company's history and organizational structure. The data was analyzed using multiple linear regression. The study's findings indicate that work discipline and corporate culture have a considerable impact on employee performance, both partially and simultaneously. Furthermore, the Work Discipline variable has the most significant impact on the employee performance variable.

Background: The term “hand-drawn art food packaging design” (HAFPD) refers to a novel and creative method of food package design that makes use of hand-drawn illustrations, typography, and graphi graphics. This kind of design technique allows for a more individual touch, giving the package a special feeling that might strike a more meaningful connection with customers. Materials and Methods: Hand-drawn art on food packaging is a powerful tool for brand identification and awareness since it helps communicate the company's values, personality, and history. When it comes to developing HAFPD, computer-aided design (CAD) may be a very useful tool. The study proposes a deep neural network (DNN)-based CAD system for HAFPD. Results: The approach blends conventional hand-drawing processes with modern digital tools to empower designers to produce package designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and practically viable. Conclusion: To track duration statistics for watch design using CAD software, designers can use a time-tracking tool or plugin. These tools can track the time spent on different tasks, such as sketching, modeling, rendering, and refining the design in food packaging. The proposed technique offers designers an effective and simple way to produce distinctive food packaging designs while preserving the authenticity of hand-drawn artwork.

To revitalize the wholesale market function, the government intends to establish an online livestock product exchange platform, promoting online trading for cuts of meat. We surveyed 110 meat processing companies nationwide to assess factors affecting the willingness to participate in online trading of cuts of meat and trading volume, using the sequence of Heckman, Logit, and Tobit models. Favorable online trading experience, short operation time, limited workforce, and minimal meat procurement boosted the willingness to participate in the online trading. High carcass auction satisfaction and distribution/sales challenges also increased the willingness to participate and transaction volume. This implies that a company's willingness to engage in the online trading of cuts of meat may be influenced by its perception of challenges stemming from a lack of experience in livestock product auction and variations in the company's size and business history.

Linguistic and pragmatic characteristics of self-presentational discourse (based on the material of the content of English-language corporate websites)

The article explores the self-presentational discourse essence in the communicative and pragmatic aspects. The relevance of this study lies in self-presentation applicability and importance in the information age. The purpose of the study is to determine the linguistic and pragmatic features of self-presentational discourse. The research was carried out using methods of linguapragmatic, discursive, interpretive and contextual analysis. The research material is English-language text content of corporate website “Company Mission” and “Company History” subsections. Scientific novelty of the article lies in the analysis of self-presentational discourse through the prism of transdiscoursivity idea, proposed by Michel Foucault. Such approach is applicable thanks to the discovery of transdiscursive signs of self-presentation. These include adaptability, universality, significance for social interaction. Self-presentation process manifests itself in the form of self-presentation strategy. Its purpose, which is abstract and constant, is to create a positive image of a speaker. Only communicative and pragmatic conditions of a concrete discourse specify the purpose. The transdiscursive discourse-forming strategy and its purpose serve as the main differentiating criteria of self-presentational discourse. Its communicative space is heterogeneous due to consisting of all possible situations of self-presentation. Each fragment of the space is treated as a specific version of self-presentational discourse realization within one discourse. Such an example is PR discourse, which concretizes PR version of self-presentational communicative space. It acts like any other version and adopts all linguistic and pragmatic features of corresponding discourse. Backgrounder as a PR discourse and PR variant genre is analyzed through “Company History” and “Company Mission” corporate website subsections. The genre embodies several tactics of the strategy. This supports the conclusion that self-presentation discourse is a transdiscursive phenomenon.
