The article is written within the framework of the concept of historical memoryand a promising direction of modern historiography – the history of the border regions. The image of the Kazakh dombrist-composer Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly is considered as an identification symbol of the cultural memory of both the population of Kazakhstan and the multinational population of the Astrakhan region.The article analyzes the commemorative practices related to memorial sites in honor of Kurmangazy located in the Astrakhan region of the Russian Federation (the mausoleum in the village of Altynzhar and the equestrian monument in Astrakhan).They are a re-reading or incorporating the past into the relevance of the present.
