Design and Implementation of Interdisciplinary Thematic Learning in Middle School Art Supported by Digital Technology

Digital technology is helpful to the interdisciplinary subject learning and practice. In junior high school art "painting road of eternal life" project learning process, "how to better save and show paintings" as the essential problem, "painting the road of eternal life", relying on art, history and information technology learning field, fusion of multidisciplinary methods and means, design data investigation, analysis, experimental exploration, creative practice, materialized achievements and display interdisciplinary series of learning activities, realize high order thinking package low order thinking, guide students in the checking, iteration gradually towards innovation.

Intolerance of uncertainty and negative emotions among high school art students during COVID-19 pandemic: a moderated mediation analysis.

A number of high school art students experience negative emotions during their preparation for the art college entrance examination, characterized by worries and fear of uncertainty. Therefore, how individual difference factors, such as intolerance of uncertainty, affect the negative emotions of students needs to be examined. Inspired by the integrative model of uncertainty tolerance, the current study seeks to explain the association between intolerance of uncertainty and negative emotions by testing the potential mediating role of psychological capital and the moderating role of family functioning. A total of 919 Chinese high school art students (Mage = 18.50 years, range = 16-22) participated from November 2022 to December 2022. Convenience sampling strategies were used. The participants were asked to complete the measures of intolerance of uncertainty scale, psychological capital questionnaire, depression anxiety stress scale, and family adaptability and cohesion evaluation scale. The data were analyzed using Pearson's r correlations and moderated mediation analysis. Results showed that intolerance of uncertainty was positively associated with negative emotions but negatively associated with psychological capital, which in turn, was negatively associated with negative emotions. Psychological capital mediated the indirect link of intolerance of uncertainty with negative emotions. Family functioning buffered the impact of psychological capital on negative emotions. This study can enhance our understanding of the intolerance of uncertainty on negative emotions and provide insights on interventions for high school art students' negative emotions for educators. The interventions targeting intolerance of uncertainty, psychological capital and family functioning may be beneficial in reducing the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on negative emotions faced by high school art students.

Adopting an Empathizing Stance in Classroom Argumentation: Pedagogical Constructs and Affordances

Although a growing body of research recognizes the importance of viewing argumentation as a means of understanding rather than combating others, little is known about how teachers cultivate this practice in classroom conversations when teaching argumentation. This study examines how argument can be taught in classroom discourse with an empathizing stance and generates associated pedagogical constructs. Adopting a microethnographic approach to discourse analysis, this study examines the key instructional events in an argumentative writing unit in two high school English language arts classes. The analysis demonstrates that the empathizing stance is introduced in the relationship between arguers and their warrants and the differences existing between arguers. It also generates four pedagogical constructs related to the teaching of argument with the stance: (1) identifying the connection between arguers’ warrants and backgrounds; (2) transposing oneself into others’ backgrounds; (3) exploring interlocutors’ common and divergent grounds; and (4) situating argument in a broader context. It concludes with a discussion of the affordances of teaching argument with an empathizing stance.

Decorative stone techniques of Italian masters

Italian mastery of decorative stones can be traced through a variety of techniques, from the period of the Roman Empire through to the nineteenth century at least. Roman mosaic work was found across the Roman Empire, and the remains of mosaics are widely admired. Hardstone work—Pietre Dure—employing many stones in intricate detail, was brought back from Italy by all those on the Grand Tour in eighteenth century Europe are to be found in many grand houses. Construction and Image Communication of Urban Cultural Space under the Collision of Modern Art Elements and Chinese Traditional Culture: A Case Study of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival

Since its inception in 2013, the Wuzhen Theatre Festival has gradually grown into one of the most influential theatre festivals at home and abroad. As one of the brand characteristic events, it has helped Wuzhen transition from a traditional Jiangnan ancient town to a well-known cultural landmark through media communication. This paper aims to analyze the multiple cultural spaces presented in the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, explore how this medium combines modern art elements with Jiangnan culture, builds a bridge between high art and ordinary people, thereby endowing Wuzhen with a more diversified international image. It also attempts to summarize the enlightenment of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival on the construction of urban cultural space and image in China today.

Motif and Manipulation: Choreographing the Five-Paragraph Essay

This article serves as an in-practice guide to help teachers facilitate the creation of a dance piece using the five-paragraph essay format to explore themes through motif and manipulation. It is an outline of the process that begins with the selection of a theme and the development of a motif to represent that theme. It compares the development of an introduction, body, and conclusion to the creation of a motif and its manipulations. This is done through a discussion of writing techniques including the use of attention grabbers, transition words, and FRIES (Facts, Reasons, Incidents, Examples, Statistics) and what their counterparts might be in a choreographic work. This article is based on the author’s experience as both a high school language arts and dance teacher in a public high school, and it highlights the culminating activity in a high school choreography class.

Art, Eros, and Liberation: Aesthetic Education between Pragmatism and Critical Theory

Abstract After showing how pragmatist aesthetics and Marcuse's critical theory affirm aesthetic education as key to transforming society toward greater freedom, equality, pleasure, and fulfillment, I compare the ways these two approaches differently perceive the scope and role of aesthetics in such transformation. Whereas Marcuse identifies the aesthetic dimension with the realm of high art, pragmatism understands this dimension far more broadly to include the popular arts and somaesthetic arts of living. Because Marcuse identifies art's critical function through its oppositional transcendence and autonomy from ordinary reality and practical life, he insists that aesthetics cannot directly contribute to transformative praxis in the real world but can operate only indirectly by transforming our sensibilities. Pragmatist aesthetics, particularly though somaesthetics, resolves the dilemma in Marcuse's aesthetics of liberation by bridging the alleged gap between aesthetics and praxis by reeducating our sensibilities in a more direct, practical, embodied way. The article further exemplifies the overlaps and differences between Marcuse's critical theory and pragmatist somaesthetics by focusing on erotic experience, which is essential to Marcuse's liberational program and increasingly present in somaesthetics’ concern with aesthetic reeducation of our senses and sensibilities.

EXPLORING YOUTUBE IN TEACHING COOKERY TO SECONDARY STUDENTS: A REVIEW

This review explores the role of online video tutorials in developing cooking skills, particularly in the context of senior high school culinary arts education shift to online learning necessitated the use of technology in education, with the Department of Education (DepEd) promoting platforms like YouTube for instructional content. While research directly on online video tutorials for cooking skills is limited, related fields highlight the benefits of video technology for skill development. These benefits include visual repetition, flexible access, and enhanced engagement. This review further examines student preferences for online video tutorials, focusing on YouTube as a primary platform. Students value the increased comprehension and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional methods. The review concludes by advocating for responsible use of online video tutorials to improve culinary education. Recommendations include promoting student engagement with online resources, ensuring tutorial quality, and providing ethical use guidance. Parental support is also identified as a critical factor in student success. Overall, this review emphasizes the potential of online video tutorials to transform culinary education while underscoring the need for responsible utilization and support mechanisms for optimal learning outcomes in the digital age.

Reclaiming the Silenced History of LGBTIQA+ Activism and the HIV/AIDS Crisis through Irish Theatre. An Interview with Phillip McMahon

The playwright and theatre director Phillip McMahon is also co-founder and co-director of THISISPOPBABY, a Dublin arts company founded in 2007 and said to have redefined modern Irish theatre, ripping up the space between popular culture, counterculture and high art. Their shows have played and toured around Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, and beyond. THISISPOPBABY voices queer culture on stage making space for the history and stories of the LGBTIQA+ Irish community positioning itself between performance and politics. The first play written by McMahon purely with LGBTIQA+ characters is Once Before I Go (2021), in which he explores and examines the legacy of the AIDS crisis in Irish queer lives. McMahon does not only voice the community’s historic pain, shame, and stigma, but he also foregrounds the fact that, despite marriage equality, the LGBTIQA+ rights movement has not come to an end. In fact, he claims that, after the COVID-19 pandemic, a wider society is ready to hear stories that have been long buried, forgotten, and suppressed.

Essay as Novel and Fiction as Art: The Evolution of Two Genres in the Oeuvre of Cynthia Ozick

Abstract Embarking on her first novel in 1950 as an ardent admirer of Henry James, Cynthia Ozick developed a demanding theory of literary high art. When she emerged from her self-seclusion in 1964 with her novel Trust and began to publish short stories, her new work was sharply critical, from a Jewish point of view, of the arrogance, vanity, and maddening ambition that drives the creation of art. In the mid-1980s, Ozick managed to resolve the conflict she had perceived between Jewish moral imperatives and literary art. At the same time, as her career was taking off and editors began to request nonfiction contributions to high-profile magazines, she split her writing into two distinct but complementary genres, fiction and essay. They serve two distinct purposes and differ in their poetics and mode of composition. Essays comment on the world, the present and the fleetingness of time; fictions are mind games; they show timeless ideas in action. This article traces the evolution of the split into two genres and delineates Ozick’s theory of art.

Innovation of Evaluation of Plating Dance Learning for High School Students Based on “Find the Match”

Evaluation innovation in art learning using digital media is very necessary. In the era of digitalization development, teachers must have skills in designing and using innovative learning media to attract students' interest. Through evaluating learning innovations using the WorldWall "Find The Match" application in SMA in learning plate dance, students' creativity and interest in learning increase as well as cognitive traits. in developing students. The purpose of this study is to create an evaluation tool using the Wordwall application "Find The Match" to meet the needs of students in the digitalization era by learning plate dance. The research method uses qualitative data Research and Development (RnD) research with descriptive percentage analysis. The results of the study using the wordwall application "find the match" in learning plate dance for high school students and art and culture teachers were very effective and practical which was used in the title "West Sumatra Plate Dance". Using learning through the application makes students' interest in learning dance increase as evidenced by the excellent student response and stimulates students' cognitive development.

High highs, low lows: Artists and anti-environments in the twenty-first century

From antiquity to contemporary times, artists have served as society’s defence against unbridled technological adoption. As stressed by Marshall McLuhan, artists are those individuals who aid society in understanding the conditions of our time. In literate times the poet and the painter assumed such responsibilities, but in the digital era the artist becomes something altogether different. McLuhan defined the artists broadly as an individual in any field who was able to provide insightful information into the human actions and consciousness of their time. Similarly, Paglia argued analysts must combine ‘high with popular art, the noble with the sleazy’ (1991: 34). Thus, we are left with two pressing questions: who are the artists of the millennium? Can they still save us? The following article sought to trace who we should be considered artists in the twenty-first century and exactly what they have accomplished, or failed to accomplish, in making society aware of shifting sense ratios. Though might bemoan the obsolescence of authenticity and aura in art, Paglia astutely points out the ‘popular culture reclaims what high culture shuts out’ (1991: 34). Therefore, a survey of both high and popular art will probe the abilities and limits of artists and their art to make society aware of the effects of technological change.

We Are All Treaty People

Within the Saskatchewan curriculum, one goal of K-12 education is ensuring that students come out of classrooms knowing that they, like all Canadians, are treaty people. This focus is touched on in select curriculum guides and within the Treaty Education Outcomes and Indicators document that has been in use by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education since 2013. While measures such as these have made the province seem to be ahead of other Canadian provinces in terms of Indigenous education, more needs to be done to ensure that this content is implemented into subject matter throughout the curriculum. The focus of this paper is on implementation methods and examples in high school Arts and STEM classrooms, as research from select organizations and from other Canadian education ministries reveals that Indigenous content can be implemented into the curricular outcomes present within these subjects. The culmination of this research looks into how the implementation of Indigenous content can aid in both the teaching of Canadian Reconciliation and in furthering the use of anti-oppressive education of which Indigenous education is a part.

Philosophy of Al-Farabi In Developing A Digital Music Notation Training Model for High School Art and Culture Teachers Based on CSCL

This article explores the philosophical aspects of Al-Farabi in the development of a music art training model, aimed at assisting high school Art and Culture teachers in understanding and teaching digital music notation. Al-Farabi, a great philosopher from the Classical Islamic period, offers valuable insights into education and learning, which are applicable in the context of music art teaching. The article elucidates how Al-Farabi's views, particularly on ethics, morality, and happiness, can be integrated into a training model based on Computer Support Collaborative Learning (CSCL) to enrich the art teachers' learning experience. Furthermore, it provides an overview of how digital music notation can be implemented in high school cultural arts education and why this approach is relevant in the rapidly evolving context of music education. This article is expected to serve as a guide for developing a holistic and philosophical training model in music art education, focusing on understanding digital music notation and applying Al-Farabi's philosophical principles in the learning process. Additionally, this research highlights the importance of integrating technology in art education, demonstrating how digital approaches can broaden the horizons of music art learning. Moreover, the article seeks to prove how teaching methods inspired by Al-Farabi's thoughts can enhance students' creativity and conceptual understanding in music art.

Nigeria’s Financial Sector Liberalization: An Implicit Cultural Policy for Art Market Development

This study adopted historical research and in-depth interviews with artists, dealers, art writers, and collectors in addressing two overarching questions, which are (1) How have state actions manifested as the impetus and impediments to art market development in Nigeria and (2) To what extent is Bourdieu’s artistic field model applicable to the Nigerian art world? As the boost in artistic production and consumption in Renaissance Italy was attributed to the wealth generated from banking by the Medici, the research also shows that the art market in Nigeria emerged as an upshot of the economic policy of financial deregulation, which manifested as an “implicit” cultural policy. The financial sector liberalization policy was aimed at addressing the economic depression that stemmed from the drastic global fall in crude oil prices in the 1980s. It stimulated the proliferation of banking and other financial services institutions in Nigeria, which engendered intense competition that lured operators into harnessing esthetics for competitive advantages. This bolstered art collection and patronage, underpinning the emergence of the contemporary art market in Nigeria with an auction segment that grew from about $250,000 in 1999 to over $5.5 million in 2017. Paradoxically, the research also revealed that inadequacies resulting from the lack of “explicit” state plans for the cultural sector constitute impediments to the optimization of the market’s potential. As a mark of power, high art and advanced taste have always been associated with elitism. Thus, the research also establishes a high degree of applicability of Bourdieu’s artistic field model in exploring the dynamics of power structures in the Nigerian art world.

Study of Pan-Sensualism as a Cross-Cultural Form: An Artwork by Jim Supangkat; Ken Dedes (1975)

This study examined the use of the term ‘Pan-Sensualism’ in the discourse on contemporary Indonesian new art and how this manifested itself in artworks created at the beginning of the Indonesian New Order era (1966-1998). Jim Supangkat was one of the artists and initiators in forming the artist group Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia (Indonesian New Art Movement), which then organized the first Seni Rupa Baru 75 exhibition in 1975. Jim Supangkat presented six installation works with different narratives, but Ken Dedes was the only one that presented the dialectic of traditional and modern culture. The Prajnaparamita, or Ken Dedes statue is presented with a drawing of the body of a woman wearing jeans with the buttons open. In looking at the formal, social-historical, cultural, feministic, and other elements in the work of Ken Dedes (1975-1996), we used the iconographic research method. This method helps to see several aspects of Supangkat’s visual works related to the aesthetic paradigm of Pan-Sensualism and the intersection of two cultural elements, i.e., high and low art, which may be distinguished based on social class appreciation.

Interactivity on Participatory Artworks. A Case Study of Long Life Laboratory

Contemporary art is a signifier for the occurance of the melting back aspect of melting back aspects of the arts with other non art disciplinesn in the art world as well as the creative industry. The collapse of hierarchies between high art and low art is the discourse in the West also influenced the development of art in Indonesia. This allows also many works popping up to a hybrid combination between pure art and design as applied art. Nowadays people believe the participatory art can be developed as the styled identity of Indonesia contemporary arts because of the collective spirit of commonly called ‘paguyuban’ it ussualy bring. There is a place called Jatiwangi Art Factory who developed an art movements by running a kind of community based methods to build their village out of economical bankruptcy. A similar approach was elaborated by a couple of Jakarta urban artist namely Irwan Ahmett and Tita Salina. They often work with the society in daily basis to criticize the Jakarta social problems. Departing from the above observation, this paper made to dissect the authos’s works entitled “Long Life Laboratory” which had been exhibited at the Bazaar Art Jakarta 2016 in Pacific Place Mall by measuring the level of interactivity on this kind work of participatory art. Exploration on the Application of Digital Resources in High School Art Appreciation Teaching

With the progress of science and technology, China's society has entered the era of digitization and informatization. Applying digital resources to high school art appreciation teaching can enrich art-teaching resources, make teaching forms more vivid and intuitive, greatly improve the teaching efficiency of art appreciation, and build an efficient art classroom. In addition, this can also create a relaxed teaching atmosphere and cultivate students' aesthetic appreciation ability. The application of digital resources in high school art appreciation teaching is an inevitable trend of teaching reform and development in the new era. Based on this, this paper first analyzes the application value of digitalization in high school art appreciation teaching, and then specifically elaborates on the innovative application path of digital resources.

Intercultural communication and modern challenges of global education

Today, development is recognized as more intricate than in the past. Scholars and practitioners observe a shift in the development landscape since the turn of the millennium, emphasizing culture’s increasing role in social life. In postmodern theory, culture asserts a predominant position among other societal spheres. A balanced view positions culture as a vital component of everyday experience, marking a transition from a scarcity-driven society where economic necessity confines human behavior to a world where individual choice is expanded by the growing influence of the human factor over external conditions. This perspective does not narrowly define culture solely as high art or achievement of cultural standards seen in official discourse, but rather embraces its broad spectrum of manifestations across public life, representing the future direction of cultural policy.

At the beginning of the 21st century, it seems to be normal for children’s books to be accompanied not only by illustrations but often also by sounds. They are in electronic form, stimulate tactile sensations and, within a certain space, step into the realm of augmented reality. Nevertheless, pictures made their way to books for children’s readers only slowly, and their application in professionally oriented literature, in the case of this study focused on music, was even more complicated. A more obvious interconnection between music and image in culture and especially in art can be traced in relation to social, political and cultural development. Illustrations of sheet music and music-related literature reacted to changes in practical, pedagogical and theoretical education without initially taking into account the needs of child development. The study highlights reforms in pedagogical principles and the initiatives of numerous publishers of specialised music editions. It examines works leading to a one-sided view of children’s music literature with respect to the assessment of the overall artistic level in the general context of book illustration as well as the scope from low to high art while taking into account theoretical reflections on mass and popular culture. Its aim is to indicate a direction foreshadowing multidisciplinary concepts, which have become a natural expression of contemporary art.
