Multi-Gb/s visible light communication based on AlGaInP amber micro-LED.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs), pivotal for solid-state illumination (SSL) and highly regarded as potential candidates in visible light communication (VLC) systems, have garnered significant interest as a solution to alleviate the congested radio frequency spectrum in next-generation communications. Addressing the challenge of extremely limited bandwidth due to the low response of phosphor in conventional illumination, our research focuses on an AlGaInP-based amber LED. This LED represents a promising avenue for phosphor-free, high-speed VLC applications when used in conjunction with the prevalent blue LED technology based on nitride materials. The fabricated AlGaInP amber LED, with a mesa diameter of 100 µm2, has undergone comprehensive optoelectronic property and transmission performance characterization. We have successfully demonstrated a proof-of-concept for VLC using the amber LED, achieving a data transmission rate of 2.94 Gb/s that complies with the forward-error-correction (FEC) standard of 3.8 × 10-3, utilizing adaptive bit and power loading with discrete multitone (BPL-DMT) modulation.

The radio frequency spectrum, which has been steadily getting smaller, is under pressure from growing cellular data traffic. A more dependable communication channel is required. To setup the communication medium, VLC uses LED illumination. In order to increase network throughput, the goal of this study is to analyze and model signal conditioning techniques in the visible spectrum. VLC technology offers synchronized illumination of LED lamps as well as wireless broadband connectivity. Using the real-valued O-OFDM baseband signal, optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) offers a viable modulation option for very-low-bit-rate (VLC) systems to modulate the optical carrier's instantaneous power to attain gigabit data rates. However, one important design difficulty preventing VLC from being commercialized is how to combine industry-favored pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming technology while retaining a dependable, broadband connection. In this paper, Reverse Polarity optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (RPO-OFDM) is proposed as a new signal format for combining the fast O-OFDM contact signal with the comparatively slow PWM dimming signal, as both signals contribute to the illuminative brightness of the LED. The average SNR, additional testing demonstrates that the suggested method outperforms the Asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO), Optimized Flipped Optical (OFO) and DC biased optical OFDM (DCO), and algorithms in similar operating conditions.

Red InGaN Micro-LEDs on Silicon Substrates: Potential for Multicolor Display and Wavelength Division Multiplexing Visible Light Communication

Red micro light-emitting diodes (micro-LEDs) on silicon substrates are crucial for the realization of large-scale, high-quality, low-cost micro-LED displays, and are also beneficial for high-speed visible light communication (VLC). In this letter, micro-LEDs with different sizes were fabricated. The maximum light output power density of the 20 μm pixel can reach 3.36 W/cm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> , which is 14 times higher than that of the largest pixel (150 μm). By adjusting the pixel size and injection current, a direct color shift from red to green can be observed. Moreover, multicolor emission with uniform brightness can be realized by adjusting duty cycle, which has broad application prospect in monolithic, multicolor displays. Despite the significant blue shift phenomenon, the peak wavelength of all pixels is still greater than 630 nm at the current density of 100 A/cm <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sup> , which means that red light can be emitted in a large current density range to meet various application scenarios requiring different driving conditions. We have realized red, yellow and green micro-LED transmitters on Si substrate by changing the driving current density and modulation bandwidth up to 533.15 MHz is achieved when emitting green light. This is the report of red-emission micro-LEDs on Si substrates for visible light communication for the first time. And we proposed a proof-of-concept monolithic, multicolor wavelength division multiplexing scheme that achieved a total allowable transmission data rate of 2.35 Gbps. Such micro-LED is expected to be applied in multicolor displays, high-speed multi-channel VLC, color-tunable light sources, etc. In particular, due to its high integration and miniaturization, it is expected to be used in future practical application scenarios such as wearable communication devices and smartwatches.

AL-aided AMC in a multi-user white-light OFDMA VLC system over a light-diffusing fiber loop.

To develop an adaptive modulation scheme for flexible high-speed multi-user visible light communication (VLC), automatic modulation classification (AMC) is adopted for monitoring the modulation formats of different subcarrier groups. An AMC scheme based on a joint convolutional neural network (CNN), active learning (AL), and data augmentation (DA) is demonstrated over an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) VLC system. The configuration of the diffuse white-light VLC system is combined with a pair integrated transceiver module, a light-diffusing fiber (LDF), and a wireless channel, which can provide white-light illumination and ubiquitous access. Within the forward error correction (FEC) threshold, the data rates of the white-light VLC links can reach 325.5 Mbps with a bit error rate (BER) of 2.163 × 10-3. An experiment with two-user access via the proposed VLC link with an unequal bandwidth allocation was demonstrated. The performance of the AL-aided CNN AMC scheme also shows a classification accuracy rate of 95.48% for the constellation diagrams of different subcarriers of the OFDMA signal over 240 training samples and faster convergence than a CNN-based AMC.

10-Gbps visible light communication in a 10-m free space based on violet series-biased micro-LED array and distance adaptive pre-equalization.

In this paper, we fabricated a 3×3 violet series-biased micro-LED array with high-output optical power and applied it in high-speed and long-distance visible light communication. By employing the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation scheme, distance adaptive pre-equalization, and a bit-loading algorithm, record data rates of 10.23 Gbps, 10.10 Gbps, and 9.51 Gbps were achieved at 0.2 m, 1 m, and 10 m, respectively, below the forward error correction limit of 3.8×10-3. To the best of our knowledge, these are the highest data rates achieved by violet micro-LEDs in free space and the first communication demonstration beyond 9.5 Gbps at 10 m using micro-LEDs.

A self-powered MXene/InGaN van der Waals heterojunction mini-photodetector for visible light communication

A van der Waals heterojunction-based photodetector has attracted significant interest due to its potential for high-speed visible light communication (VLC) application. Herein, we report a self-powered and high-performance MXene/InGaN van der Waals heterojunction visible light mini-photodetector (mini-PD). The combination of MXene and InGaN creates a Schottky junction that effectively separates the photoinduced electron/hole pairs, resulting in a robust heterojunction structure while enhancing carrier mobility and lifetime. The mini-PD exhibits the responsivity of 6.0 A/W, a specific detection rate of 9 × 1011 Jones, and rise/decay times of 7.1/183.2 μs under 470 nm blue light (36.5 μW/cm2) without bias voltage. The results show that MXene forms a robust type-II band arrangement with InGaN, which converts the optical signal into a large electrical signal and improves the stability of the mini-PD. This work provides a strategy for high-speed VLC without external energy input that has great potential for applications such as energy-efficient communication, sensor networks, and low-sensitivity detection.

Optimal Adaptive Waveform Design Utilizing an End-to-End Learning-Based Pre-Equalization Neural Network in an UVLC System

Visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising communication method in the special field of 6G, such as intersatellite communication (ISC) and underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC). Green light-emitting diode (LED)-based underwater visible light communication (VLC) is considered a potential candidate for UWOC of mobile autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and remotely operated underwater vehicle, particularly in coastal and harbor environments. However, due to bandwidth limitations and variable underwater channels, implementing high-speed underwater VLC remains a challenge. In this paper, a neural network-based auto equalization model (NNAEM) using end-to-end learning is proposed to achieve a high-speed underwater VLC link with a bandwidth-limited green LED. The entire NNAEM includes a neural network-based channel model, a pre-equalization neural network, and a post-equalization neural network. Based on the data-driven channel model, our auto equalization (AE) method can dynamically pre-equalize the discrete multitone (DMT) modulated signal in different bandwidth-limited cases and various nonlinearity cases. An underwater VLC link with a data rate of 3.451 Gbps and a transmission distance of 1.2 m is experimentally demonstrated by employing the proposed NNAEM under the hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">−3</sup> . The data rate improvement is up to 30.4% compared to other advanced digital signal processing (DSP) methods. The scenario adaptation and robustness of the NNAEM are also verified in the experiments, which demonstrate that the NNAEM can serve an important role in underwater high-speed VLC transmission.

Recent Advances in Optical Injection Locking for Visible Light Communication Applications

The introduction of visible light communication (VLC) technology could increase the capacity of existing wireless communication systems towards 6G networks. In practice, VLC can make good use of lighting system infrastructures to transmit data using light fidelity (Li-Fi). The use of semiconductor light sources, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) are essential to VLC technology because these devices are energy-efficient and have long lifespans. To achieve high-speed VLC links, various technologies have been utilized, including injection locking. Optical injection locking (OIL) is an optical frequency and phase synchronization technique that has been implemented in semiconductor laser systems for performance enhancement. High-performance optoelectronic devices with narrow linewidth, wide tunable emission, large modulation bandwidth and high data transmission rates are desired for advanced VLC. Thus, the features of OIL could be promising for building high-performance VLC systems. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the implementation of the injection-locking technique in optical communication systems. The enhancement of characteristics through OIL is elucidated. The applications of OIL in VLC systems are discussed. The prospects of OIL for future VLC systems are evaluated.

Comparison of Beyond 1 GHz C-Plane Freestanding and Sapphire-Substrate GaN-Based micro-LEDs for High-Speed Visible Light Communication

With ever-growing demand for 6G networks technology, visible light communication (VLC) as a vital component of 6G has challenging requirement for superior performance of light source. Herein, 20 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\mu$</tex-math></inline-formula> m blue micro-LED fabricated on 2-inch <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">c</i> -plane GaN freestanding substrate with high bandwidth over 1 GHz was first demonstrated, and the systematic comparisons to sapphire-substrate micro-LED from the epitaxial materials characterization to optoelectronic properties as well as communication performance were further conducted. GaN-substrate LED wafer has high crystal quality with lower threading dislocation density (TDD), which is two orders of magnitude lower than that of sapphire-substrate LED wafer. The much lower TDD of GaN-substrate LED wafer and better heat dissipation of GaN substrate offer GaN-substrate micro-LED great advantages in optoelectronic properties as well as communication performance. GaN-substrate micro-LED exhibited higher light output power (LOP) especially at high operating current, which is improved by <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\sim$</tex-math></inline-formula> 21% at 96 mA compared to that of sapphire substrate. Also, GaN-substrate micro-LED achieved a relatively higher bandwidth of 1.282 GHz while maintaining higher LOP with lower operating voltage. And a higher data rate of 4.48 Gbps under 1 m free space link was obtained by GaN-substrate micro-LED, proving it being a promising candidate in high-speed VLC.

High-speed VLC Security System Using Two Key Services by Multi-point Analysis

Visible Light Communication (VLC) is a new and unregistered technology under the IEEE 802.15.7 standard. The light-emitting diode (LED) is used in the majority of applications. Despite the fact that all applications have a secure data flow, only fixed vital management methods are used and attackers may be able to hack or disintegrate those keys. With the logistic and Henon algorithms, the proposed novel mapping method provides excellent security (HLM). In this approach for generating crucial sequences, random number generation (RNG) is used. The chaotic system of the non-linear dynamic discrete-time source is used to extract the HLM cryptography source. In this proposed work, the novel design of critical generation, utilizing HLM-RNG, is mathematically evaluated and simulated in MATLAB, to produce a crypto key-based security system that employs two diffusion and permutation processes as cropping techniques. This proposed system obtains quick encryption of 0.16 s through test analysis, sensitivity analysis, statistics utilizing histogram analysis, correlation of 0.0001 difference analysis and information entropy of 7.99. It can also keep the bit error rate (BER) at 0.993e−6, according to the BER study.

High-Reliability Perovskite Quantum Dots Using Atomic Layer Deposition Passivation for Novel Photonic Applications.

In this study, we propose highly stable perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) coated with Al2O3 using atomic layer deposition (ALD) passivation technology. This passivation layer effectively protects the QDs from moisture infiltration and oxidation as well as from high temperatures and any changes in the material characteristics. They exhibit excellent wavelength stability and reliability in terms of current variation tests, long-term light aging tests, and temperature/humidity tests (60°/90%). A white-light system has been fabricated by integrating a micro-LED and red phosphor exhibiting a high data transmission rate of 1 Gbit/s. These results suggest that PeQDs treated with ALD passivation protection offer promising prospects in full-color micro-displays and high-speed visible-light communication (VLC) applications.

Vertical stack integration of blue and yellow InGaN micro-LED arrays for display and wavelength division multiplexing visible light communication applications.

In this work, we demonstrated a convenient and reliable method to realize the vertical stack integration of the blue and yellow InGaN micro-LED arrays. The standard white and color-tunable micro-light sources can be achieved by adjusting the current densities injection of the micro-LEDs. The spectra cover violet, standard white, cyan, etc., showing an excellent color-tunable property. And the mixed standard white light can be separated into red-green-blue three primary colors through the color filters to realize full-color micro-LED display with a color gamut of 75% NTSC. Besides, the communication capability of the integrated micro-LED arrays as visible light communication (VLC) transmitters is demonstrated with a maximum total data rate of 2.35 Gbps in the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) experimental set-up using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation. In addition, a data rate of 250 Mbps is also realized with the standard white light using on-off keying (OOK) modulation. This integrated device shows great potential in full-color micro-LED display, color-tunable micro-light sources, and high-speed WDM VLC multifunctional applications.

Si-substrate vertical-structure InGaN/GaN micro-LED-based photodetector for beyond 10 Gbps visible light communication

Visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising communication method in 6G. However, the development of receiving devices is much slower than that of transmitting devices, limited by materials, structures, and fabrication. In this paper, we propose and fabricate an InGaN/GaN multiple-quantum-well-based vertical-structure micro-LED-based photodetector (μPD) on a Si substrate. A comprehensive comparison of the photoelectrical performance and communication performance of three sizes of μPDs, 10, 50, and 100 μm, is presented. The peak responsivity of all three μPDs is achieved at 400 nm, while the passband full-widths at half maxima are 87, 72, and 78 nm for 10, 50, and 100 μm μPDs, respectively. The − 20 dB cutoff bandwidth is up to 822 MHz for 50 μm μPD. A data rate of 10.14 Gbps is experimentally demonstrated by bit and power loading discrete multitone modulation and the proposed digital pre-equalizer algorithm over 1 m free space utilizing the self-designed 4 × 4 50 μm μPD array as a receiver and a 450 nm laser diode as a transmitter. This is the first time a more than 10 Gbps VLC system has been achieved utilizing a GaN-based micro-PD, to the best of our knowledge. The investigation fully demonstrates the superiority of Si substrates and vertical structures in InGaN/GaN μPDs and shows its great potential for high-speed VLC links beyond 10 Gbps.

In recent years, cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) and cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) quantum dots have been widely investigated to enhance the capacity of visible light communication (VLC) and solid-state lighting (SSL). Herein, liquid-phase color converter (LCC) glass cavities and solid-phase color converter (SCC) films with green-emitting CsPbBr3 and red-emitting CdSe/ZnS are fabricated to investigate and compare their performance. A facile high-quality LCC-based white laser diode (WLD) is fabricated by combining blue LD with LCC CsPbBr3 and CdSe/ZnS glass cavities as color conversion layers. The LCC-based WLD achieves bright white light with a color rendering index of 85, a correlated color temperature of 5520 K, and a Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates at (0.32, 0.34). Moreover, the VLC system exhibits a modulation bandwidth of 855 MHz and the capability to transmit a real-time data rate of up to 2.1 Gbps over a transmission distance of 1.2 meters. These results indicate that the fabricated WLD is a promising lighting device for simultaneous high-speed VLC and high-efficiency SSL.

3.76-Gbps yellow-light visible light communication system over 1.2 m free space transmission utilizing a Si-substrate LED and a cascaded pre-equalizer network.

Recently, visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising communication method in 6G. To achieve 6G high-speed transmission, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) based VLC systems are a highly promising candidate. However, the "yellow and green gap" greatly limits the yellow light efficiency of InGaN-based LEDs and also restricts the transmission rate of yellow LEDs. In addition, pre-equalization and post-equalization also have an important impact on high-speed communication. In this paper, we propose to employ a vertical InGaN-based Si-substrate yellow LED with bit-power loading discrete multitone (DMT) modulation and a novel cascaded pre-equalizer network to achieve a high-speed yellow-light VLC system. The proposed cascaded pre-equalizer network is based on a digital Zobel network and a partial nonlinear pre-equalizer (DZNPN). The microscopic time-domain transient response of the high-speed and large-amplitude signal is also investigated to show a severe impairment. Utilizing the DZNPN cascaded pre-equalizer network based on the third-order Volterra series, a record-breaking data rate of 3.764Gbps over 1.2 m free space and 3.808Gbps over 0.7 m are experimentally demonstrated under the hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. The rate can be improved from 2.818Gbps to 3.764Gbps with 650Mbaud compared to the un-preprocessed signal. This is the highest data rate ever reported for yellow-light VLC systems based on a single LED to the best of our knowledge.
