Exogenous melatonin improves peanut field productivity and quality at reduced nitrogen application

ContextNitrogen (N) plays integral roles in plant growth and yield. Finding ways to increase plant yield with reduced N usage will promote both agricultural and environmental sustainability. Melatonin acts as a multifunctional regulatory molecule in numerous metabolic processes crucial for plant growth and development as well as response to environmental stresses. The effects of melatonin on the material accumulation and transport, source-sink dynamics, as well as its association with yield and quality formation of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) remain unclear, especially at different N levels. ObjectivesWe aim to investigate the response mechanism of melatonin in peanut plants subjected to reduced N application, in order to confirm the hypothesis that melatonin regulates carbon and N accumulation and transport, and coordinates source-sink relationships to increase production and improve quality. MethodsThis study examined the effects of two seed dressing treatments (with or without 0.5μM MT) and three N fertilizer levels (90, 135, and 180kg/ha) using a randomized complete block design with split plots and three biological replications over 2021 and 2022. The evaluation focused on photosynthetic physiology, enzyme activities related to carbon and N metabolism, accumulation and transport of dry matter and N, yield, and quality, while exploring the relationships among these variables. ResultsMelatonin-treated plants had more stable carbon and N metabolism than the untreated ones. This stability was linked to improved photosynthesis, sucrose production, and N assimilation, especially at the reduced N levels (90 and 135kg/ha). Across three N levels and two years of field tests, MT increased peanut dry matter by 23.49% from 455.63g/m2 to 562.66g/m2, enhanced the accumulation and mobilization of dry matter and N to grains by increasing peanut grain mass by 22.41-29.07% at different N levels. This process appears to subsequently elevate the effective pod rate, leading to an average increase in pod yield, fat and protein content by 12.63%, 7.95%, and 10.33%, respectively, over a two-year period and across three N application levels. ConclusionsPlants subjected to melatonin treatment exhibited a coordinated source-sink relationship, which is manifested in high photosynthetic capacity and a high proportion of assimilates transported to pods, thus promoting effective proportions and pod fullness to improve peanut yield and quality under reduced N application. SignificanceOur research provided insights into the response mechanism of melatonin on peanut carbon and N metabolism across various N treatments, contributing to a deeper understanding of how melatonin enhances crop yield and quality.

Leaf Photosynthetic and Photoprotective Acclimation in the Ultraviolet-A1 and Blue Light Regions Follow a Continuous, Shallow Gradient.

Although blue light is known to produce leaves with high photosynthetic capacity, the role of the blue-adjacent UV-A1 (350-400 nm) in driving leaf photosynthetic acclimation is less studied. Tomato plants were grown under hybrid red and blue (RB; 95/5 μmol m-2 s-1), as well as four treatments in which RB was supplemented with 50 μmol m-2 s-1 peaking at 365, 385, 410 and 450 nm, respectively. Acclimation to 365-450 nm led to a shallow gradient increase in trait values (i.e., photosynthetic capacity, pigmentation and dry mass content) as the peak wavelength increased. Furthermore, both UV-A1 and blue light grown leaves showed efficient photoprotection under high light intensity. When treated plants were transferred to fluctuating light for 5 days, leaves from all treatments showed increases in photosynthetic capacity, which were strongest in RB, followed by additional UV-A1 treatments; RB grown leaves showed reductions in maximum quantum yield of photosystem II, while UV-A1 grown leaves showed increases. We conclude that both UV-A1 and blue light effectively trigger photosynthetic and photoprotective acclimation, the extent of acclimation becoming stronger the longer the peak wavelength is. Acclimatory responses to UV-A1 and blue light are thus not distinct from one another, but follow a continuous gradient.

Winter leaf phenology differences facilitate selective control of an invasive plant species by herbicide

Herbicide control of invasive plant species is generally efficient. However, there is a likelihood of the excessive application of non-selective herbicides that kill co-occurring native species and cause environmental toxicity. We present a case study on the control of the invasive exotic Solidago canadensis with photosynthetically active leaves in winter by applying glyphosate. This approach improves herbicide control efficiency, while preventing harm to most co-occurring native plants. We quantified the winter leaf phenology and photosynthetic capacity of S. canadensis and two commonly co-occurring native species. We tested the effects of glyphosate and competition on S. canadensis and native Imperata cylindrica with contrasting winter leaf phenology in both pot and field experiments. Finally, we surveyed the life forms and winter leaf phenology of most co-occurring plant species in eastern China to determine whether most co-occurring species and S. canadensis differ in winter leaf phenology. Old leaves withered much later and new leaves developed much earlier in S. canadensis than in the two co-occurring species. Both the old and new leaves of S. canadensis had high photosynthetic capacity in winter. In summer, glyphosate suppressed the growth of S. canadensis by 20.1–59.5% and growth of I. cylindrica to a greater extent (by 57.6–91.7%), whereas winter application of glyphosate at a certain concentration suppressed the growth of S. canadensis by 91.4–95.6% (the efficiency was higher than summer application), but had no impact on I. cylindrica. Glyphosate application in winter alleviated competition stress from S. canadensis on I. cylindrica. We conclude that winter glyphosate application can increase the selectivity and efficiency of chemical control of invasive S. canadensis, which may shift the competition balance towards native species and favour native vegetation recovery in sites invaded by S. canadensis. The principles of this approach can be applied to any scenario where invasive species and co-occurring species have distinct phenological niche separation.

Non-Structural Carbohydrates Accumulation in Seedlings Improved Flowering Quality of Tree Peony under Forcing Culture Conditions, with Roots Playing a Crucial Role.

(1) Tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews) is a woody ornamental plant originating from China, and beloved by people worldwide. Non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) play a crucial role in regulating the flowering quality of tree peonies in both field and potted conditions. However, the effects of NSCs accumulation and allocation in various organs during the vegetative growth stage on the flowering quality of tree peony under forcing culture remains unclear. (2) Two-year-old grafted seedlings of tree peony cv. 'Luoyanghong' were subjected to orthogonal treatments to investigate the role of NSCs accumulation in plants' developmental process. We measured leaf photosynthetic capacity, NSCs accumulation in the organs of seedlings, observed key ornamental characteristics of flowering quality under forcing culture conditions, and evaluated the qualities of seedlings and flowers using the seedling index (SI) and flowering index (FI), respectively. (3) There was a significant positive correlation between leaf photosynthetic capacity and NSCs accumulation in both the whole plant and roots of potted tree peony. Roots were identified as the primary organs for NSCs accumulation in potted tree peonies. Sufficient NSCs accumulation in the plant, particularly in the roots during the defoliation period, was essential not only for enhancing the seedling quality of potted tree peonies but also for improving the flowering quality under forcing culture conditions. Both the seedling index (SI) and flowering index (FI) exhibited a significant dose-response with increasing root NSCs accumulation at defoliation. The T3 group, which involved slight root pruning (by 25%), combined with a high-concentration rooting agent (750 mg·L-1) and Metarhizium anisopliae (20 million U·mL-1), resulted in the highest photosynthetic capacity, SI, FI and NSCs accumulation status (NSCAR), making it the optimal treatment combination. (4) This finding indicates that increasing NSCs accumulation in the roots of potted tree peonies is a crucial biological foundation for producing high-quality potted flowers under forcing culture conditions, which provide new insights into the importance of NSCs in tree peony flowering and may improve the production technology for high-quality potted tree peony flowers under forcing culture conditions.

High photosynthesis rates in Brassiceae species are mediated by leaf anatomy enabling high biochemical capacity, rapid CO2 diffusion and efficient light use.

Certain species in the Brassicaceae family exhibit high photosynthesis rates, potentially providing a valuable route toward improving agricultural productivity. However, factors contributing to their high photosynthesis rates are still unknown. We compared Hirschfeldia incana, Brassica nigra, Brassica rapa and Arabidopsis thaliana, grown under two contrasting light intensities. Hirschfeldia incana matched B. nigra and B. rapa in achieving very high photosynthesis rates under high growth-light condition, outperforming A. thaliana. Photosynthesis was relatively more limited by maximum photosynthesis capacity in H. incana and B. rapa and by mesophyll conductance in A. thaliana and B. nigra. Leaf traits such as greater exposed mesophyll specific surface enabled by thicker leaf or high-density small palisade cells contributed to the variation in mesophyll conductance among the species. The species exhibited contrasting leaf construction strategies and acclimation responses to low light intensity. High-light plants distributed Chl deeper in leaf tissue, ensuring even distribution of photosynthesis capacity, unlike low-light plants. Leaf anatomy of H. incana, B. nigra and B. rapa facilitated effective CO2 diffusion, efficient light use and provided ample volume for their high maximum photosynthetic capacity, indicating that a combination of adaptations is required to increase CO2-assimilation rates in plants.

Carboxylation capacity is the main limitation of carbon assimilation in High Arctic shrubs.

Increases in shrub height, biomass and canopy cover are key whole-plant features of warming-induced vegetation change in tundra. We investigated leaf functional traits underlying photosynthetic capacity of Arctic shrub species, particularly its main limiting processes such as mesophyll conductance. In this nutrient-limited ecosystem, we expect leaf nitrogen concentration to be the main limiting factor for photosynthesis. We measured the net photosynthetic rate at saturated light (Asat) in three Salix species throughout a glacial valley in High-Arctic tundra and used a causal approach to test relationships between leaf stomatal and mesophyll conductances (gsc, gm), carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), nitrogen and phosphorus concentration (Narea, Parea) and leaf mass ratio (LMA). Arctic Salix species showed no difference in Asat compared to a global data set, while being characterized by higher Narea, Parea and LMA. Vcmax, gsc and gm independently increased Asat, with Vcmax as its main limitation. We highlighted a nitrogen-influenced pathway for increasing photosynthesis in the two prostrate mesic habitat species. In contrast, the erect wetland habitat Salix richardsonii mainly increased Asat with increasing gsc. Overall, our study revealed high photosynthetic capacities of Arctic Salix species but contrasting regulatory pathways that may influence shrub ability to respond to environmental changes in High Arctic tundra.

Physiological, transcriptomic and metabolomic insights of three extremophyte woody species living in the multi-stress environment of the Atacama Desert.

In contrast to Neltuma species, S. tamarugo exhibited higher stress tolerance, maintaining photosynthetic performance through enhanced gene expression and metabolites. Differentially accumulated metabolites include chlorophyll and carotenoids and accumulation of non-nitrogen osmoprotectants. Plant species have developed different adaptive strategies to live under extreme environmental conditions. Hypothetically, extremophyte species present a unique configuration of physiological functions that prioritize stress-tolerance mechanisms while carefully managing resource allocation for photosynthesis. This could be particularly challenging under a multi-stress environment, where the synthesis of multiple and sequential molecular mechanisms is induced. We explored this hypothesis in three phylogenetically related woody species co-occurring in the Atacama Desert, Strombocarpa tamarugo, Neltuma alba, and Neltuma chilensis, by analyzing their leaf dehydration and freezing tolerance and by characterizing their photosynthetic performance under natural growth conditions. Besides, the transcriptomic profiling, biochemical analyses of leaf pigments, and metabolite analysis by untargeted metabolomics were conducted to study gene expression and metabolomic landscape within this challenging multi-stress environment. S. tamarugo showed a higher photosynthetic capacity and leaf stress tolerance than the other species. In this species, a multifactorial response was observed, which involves high photochemical activity associated with a higher content of chlorophylls and β-carotene. The oxidative damage of the photosynthetic apparatus is probably attenuated by the synthesis of complex antioxidant molecules in the three species, but S. tamarugo showed the highest antioxidant capacity. Comparative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses among the species showed the differential expression of genes involved in the biosynthetic pathways of key stress-related metabolites. Moreover, the synthesis of non-nitrogen osmoprotectant molecules, such as ciceritol and mannitol in S. tamarugo, would allow the nitrogen allocation to support its high photosynthetic capacity without compromising leaf dehydration tolerance and freezing stress avoidance.

Emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccum Schuebl.) favours high photosynthetic capacity adaptation to low nitrogen stress.

Although tetraploid wheat has rich genetic variability for cultivar improvement, its physiological mechanisms associated with photosynthetic productivity and resilience under nitrogen (N) deficit stress have not been investigated. In this study, we selected emmer wheat (Kronos, tetraploid), Yangmai 25 (YM25, hexaploid), and Chinese Spring (CS, hexaploid) as materials and investigated the differences in net photosynthetic rate (Pn), carboxylation capacity, electron transfer capacity, photosynthetic product output, and photosynthetic N allocation under normal N (CK) and low N (LN) through hydroponic experiments. Tetraploid emmer wheat (Kronos) had a stronger photosynthetic capacity than hexaploid wheat (YM25, CS) under low N stress, which mainly associated with the higher degree of PSII opening, electron transfer rate, Rubisco content and activity, ATP/ADP ratio, Rubisco activase (Rca) activity and Rubisco activation state, and more leaves N allocation to the photosynthetic apparatus, especially the proportion of N allocation to carboxylation under low N stress. Moreover, Kronos reduced the feedback inhibition of photosynthesis by sucrose accumulation through higher sucrose phosphate synthetase (SPS) activity and triose phosphate utilization rate (VTPU). Overall, Kronos could allocate more N to the photosynthetic components to improve Rubisco content and activity to maintain photosynthetic capacity under low N stress while enhancing triose phosphate output to reduce feedback inhibition of photosynthesis. This study reveals the physiological mechanisms of emmer wheat that maintain the photosynthetic capacity under low N stress, which will provide indispensable germplasm resources for elite low-N-tolerant wheat improvement and breeding.

Wood forming tissue-specific expression of PaTyDC4 promotes xylem differentiation and lignin deposition during secondary growth and confers drought tolerance in Populus

Tyrosine decarboxylase (TyDC) converts tyrosine to tyramine and plays a crucial role in secondary metabolite reactions, development, and stress responses in plants. Currently, the biological role of TyDC proteins from trees is unknown. This study provided evidence showing that poplar PaTyDC4 functions in wood development and drought stress response. PaTyDC4 is preferentially expressed in wood-forming cells in stems. Overexpression of PaTyDC4 in poplars under the control of a xylem-specific promoter resulted in an increase in the ratio of xylem to phloem width, vessel cell area, and lignin accumulation in the stems. Biochemical assays revealed that PaTyDC4 is a component of the PaC3H17-PaMYB199 module-mediated pathway. In poplar stems, PaTyDC4 expression was directly suppressed by PaMYB199, which was attenuated by the interaction between PaC3H17 and PaMYB199. In addition, PaTyDC4 overexpression lines showed stronger drought tolerance than the wild-type lines, with higher photosynthetic capacity and lower levels of H2O2. These results indicate that PaTyDC4 promotes xylem differentiation and lignin deposition during secondary growth and confers drought tolerance. Our findings may be useful for the genetic modification of biomass and drought resistance in trees.

Bioprospecting of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii for boosting biofuel-related products production based on novel aggregation-induced emission active extracellular polymeric substances nanoprobes

Biofuel production from microalgae has been greatly restricted by low biomass productivity and long-term photosynthetic efficacy. Here, a novel strategy for selecting high-growing, stress-resistant algal strains with high photosynthetic capacity was proposed based on biocompatible extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) probes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Specifically, AIE active EPS probes were synthesized for in-situ long-term monitoring of the EPS productivity at different algal growth stages. By coupling the AIE-based fluorescent techniques, algal cells were classified into four diverse populations based on their chlorophyll and EPS signals. Mechanistic studies on the sorted algal cells revealed their remarkable stress resistance and high expression of cell division, biopolymer production and photosynthesis-related genes. The sorted and subcultured algal cells consistently exhibited relatively higher growth rates and photosynthetic capacities, resulting in an increased (1.2 to 1.8-fold) algal biomass production, chlorophyll, and lipids. This study can potentially open new strategies to boost microalgal-based biofuel production.

Morphological, Anatomical, and Physiological Characteristics of Heteroblastic Acacia melanoxylon Grown under Weak Light.

Acacia melanoxylon is a fast-growing macrophanerophyte with strong adaptability whose leaf enables heteromorphic development. Light is one of the essential environmental factors that induces the development of the heteroblastic leaf of A. melanoxylon, but its mechanism is unclear. In this study, the seedlings of A. melanoxylon clones were treated with weak light (shading net with 40% of regular light transmittance) and normal light (control) conditions for 90 d and a follow-up observation. The results show that the seedlings' growth and biomass accumulation were inhibited under weak light. After 60 days of treatment, phyllodes were raised under the control condition while the remaining compound was raised under weak light. The balance of root, stem, and leaf biomass changed to 15:11:74 under weak light, while it was 40:15:45 under control conditions. After comparing the anatomical structures of the compound leaves and phyllode, they were shown to have their own strategies for staying hydrated, while phyllodes were more able to control water loss and adapt to intense light. The compound leaves exhibited elevated levels of K, Cu, Ca, and Mg, increased antioxidant enzyme activity and proline content, and higher concentrations of chlorophyll a, carotenoids, ABA, CTK, and GA. However, they displayed a relatively limited photosynthetic capacity. Phyllodes exhibited higher levels of Fe, cellulose, lignin, IAA content, and high photosynthetic capacity with a higher maximum net photosynthetic rate, light compensation point, dark respiration rate, and water use efficiency. The comparative analysis of compound leaves and phyllodes provides a basis for understanding the diverse survival strategies that heteroblastic plants employ to adapt to environmental changes.

An Evidence of Carbonic Anhydrase Activity in Native Microalgae for CO2 Capture Application.

A promising alternative for effective carbon capture has been found in microalgae because of their high photosynthetic capacity and quick growth. The carbon concentration mechanism of many microalgae is heavily reliant on the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA), which catalyze the production of bicarbonate from carbon dioxide. In this study, microalgal samples were collected, characterized, and cultured under controlled conditions for their optimal growth of cultures I-IX. The CA activity was investigated using a standard method; the Wilbur-Anderson assay was used to calculate CA activity in microalgal cultures. The comparative study was then used to measure the activity rate of the collected microalgae. Among the tested, culture I, VI, and IX showed a high enzyme activity rate of 4.15, 4.0, and 4.2µg·mL-1, respectively. To determine the rate of carbon dioxide hydration, the method involved tracking the pH change in a reaction mixture. In addition, genetic analysis facilitates the identification of key genes involved in CA activity and other metabolic processes, which enhance the knowledge of microalgal physiology, and enables genetic engineering efforts in the future studies. Overall, this investigation emphasizes the significance of studying unknown microalgal culture and their potential CA activity for industrial and bio-energy applications.

The contribution of carbon budget to masting intervals in Veratrum album populations inhabiting different elevations.

Mast flowering/seeding is often more extreme in lower-resource environments, such as alpine compared to lowland habitats. We studied a masting herb that had less extreme masting at higher elevations, and tested if this difference could be explained by higher photosynthetic productivity and/or lower reproductive investment at the higher-elevation sites. We examined the relationship between flowering intervals and carbon budget (i.e., the balance between reproductive investment and annual carbon fixation) in a masting herb, Veratrum album subsp. oxysepalum, across five lowland and six alpine populations in northern Japan. We evaluated the previous flowering histories of individual plants based on rhizome morphology and analyzed the masting patterns of individual populations. Total mass of the reproductive organs, as a proxy of reproductive investment, was compared between the lowland and alpine populations. Annual carbon fixation was estimated on the basis of photosynthetic capacity, total leaf area per plant, and seasonal transition of light availability. Interval between high-flowering years was shorter and total reproductive investment was smaller in the alpine than in the lowland populations. Owing to its high photosynthetic capacity and continuous bright conditions, annual carbon fixation per plant was 1.5 times greater in alpine habitat than in lowland habitat. These results suggest that V. album alpine populations have shorter flowering intervals than lowland populations due to faster recovery from energy loss after reproduction. Our study demonstrated that masting intervals in V. album populations can be explained by habitat-specific carbon budget balances.

Increasing cotton lint yield and water use efficiency for subsurface drip irrigation without mulching.

Planting without mulching can eliminate the residual film pollution caused by the long-term use of plastic film covers, but it will increase soil moisture evaporation and heat loss and severely reduce water use efficiency and cotton productivity in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fields in arid regions. It is unclear whether the advantages of subsurface drip irrigation and nighttime irrigation can be leveraged to reduce the amount of irrigation applied in fields, improve the soil and leaf hydrothermal environments, and increase the synchronicity of yield and water use efficiency (WUE). Therefore, in a two-year field experiment (2019-2020), cotton was grown under different irrigation treatments (I5, 3753 m3 ha-1; I4, 3477 m3 ha-1; I3, 3201 m3 ha-1; I2, 2925 m3 ha-1; and I1, 2649 m3 ha-1). The soil volumetric moisture content, soil temperature, leaf relative water content (RWC), daily changes in gas exchange parameters, lint yield, and WUE were evaluated. The results showed that reducing irrigation can reduce the soil volumetric moisture content (0-40cm soil layer), increase the soil temperature and soil temperature conductivity, and increase the leaf temperature, intercellular carbon dioxide concentration (Ci), and WUE; however, reducing irrigation is not conducive to increasing the leaf RWC, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), or transpiration rate (Tr). There was no significant difference in WUE between the I3 and I4 treatments from 8:00 to 20:00, but the lint yield in these treatments increased by 2.8-12.2% compared to that in the I5 treatment, with no significant difference between the I3 and I4 treatments. In addition, a related analysis revealed that the positive effects of the leaf hydrothermal environment on the Pn and soil temperature on the WUE occurs during the same period (10:00-16:00). Overall, an irrigation amount of 3201-3477 m3 ha-1 applied with a subsurface nighttime irrigation system without mulching can enhance the soil moisture content and soil temperature, maintain a high photosynthetic capacity, and increase the lint yield and WUE. These results revealed that the negative impacts of plastic film contamination in arid areas can be alleviated.

One size does not fit all: Different strategies employed by triticale and barley plants to deal with soil salinity

Salinity stress tolerance is a polygenic trait conferred by multiple physiological mechanisms, operating at various levels of plant structural organization. In this work, we have compared adaptative strategies employed by barley and triticale, two most tolerant cereal species, to deal with saline conditions. While the photosynthetic attributes were considerably reduced by 200 mM NaCl treatment in both species, triticale plants maintained higher photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf area compared with barley. Triticale plants also showed higher stomatal conductance under both saline and non-saline conditions, explaining the above photosynthetic rate. However, this high photosynthetic capacity in triticale was not translated into higher biomass (as compared with barley) due to stronger salinity-induced inhibition of tillering in the former species. Leaf elemental analysis revealed that salinity tolerance in triticale was related to its ability to exclude Na+ from the shoot while tolerant barley plant tended to accumulate more Na in shoot upon exposure to salt stress, for osmotic adjustment purposes. Salinity tolerance in both species was also causally associated with higher Fe content that was essential for activation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) to reduce the extent of oxidative stress. Electrophysiological experiments also revealed several patterns associated with control of ion transport in root epidermis, of which desensitization of K+- and Ca2+- ROS-inducible cation channels were the main trait conferring salinity tolerance. Cytosolic K+ retention in the root elongation zone in response to salt stress was more efficient in both triticale genotypes compared to barley. Finally, barley and salt tolerant genotypes of triticale showed higher speed of stomata, thus possessing higher water use efficiency.

Time-resolved systems analysis of the induction of high photosynthetic capacity in Arabidopsis during acclimation to high light.

Induction of high photosynthetic capacity is a key acclimation response to high light (HL) for many herbaceous dicot plants; however, the signaling pathways that control this response remain largely unknown. Here, a systems biology approach was utilized to characterize the induction of high photosynthetic capacity in strongly and weakly acclimating Arabidopsis thaliana accessions. Plants were grown for 5 wk in a low light (LL) regime, and time-resolved photosynthetic physiological, metabolomic, and transcriptomic responses were measured during subsequent exposure to HL. The induction of high nitrogen (N) assimilation rates early in the HL shift was strongly predictive of the induction of photosynthetic capacity later in the HL shift. Accelerated N assimilation rates depended on the mobilization of existing organic acid (OA) reserves and increased de novo OA synthesis during the induction of high photosynthetic capacity. Enhanced sucrose biosynthesis capacity increased in tandem with the induction of high photosynthetic capacity, and increased starch biosynthetic capacity was balanced by increased starch catabolism. This systems analysis supports a model in which the efficient induction of N assimilation early in the HL shift begins the cascade of events necessary for the induction of high photosynthetic capacity acclimation in HL.

The mixed blessings of rare earth element supplements for tomatoes and ferns

Rare earth elements (REEs) constitute a key group of critical minerals that are strategic for the global low-carbon economy and several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Their expected escalating emissions into the environment from emerging anthropogenic sources can negatively affect natural ecosystems. However, their hormetic effects make these elements effective fertilizers to promote crop production. Here, we investigate the response of tomatoes and ferns to REE exposure (La, Gd, Yb). While ferns were unresponsive to REEs, these elements promote evident benefits in tomatoes, e.g., elevating nutrient uptake, higher photosynthetic capacity and phytohormone enhancement to allocate energy to green tissue and root development. Nevertheless, the non-selective cation uptake incurs risks of accumulating non-essential elements in edible tissues. These evident benefits of REEs on crops support applications in agricultural production systems, create added value to the global distribution and promote better material flow management of REEs as strategic and critical resources.

Emerging technologies for advancing microalgal photosynthesis and metabolism toward sustainable production

Microalgae are unicellular photosynthetic microorganisms that play a vital role in primary production and have diverse applications in various industries. They have high photosynthetic and metabolic capacities and can produce a variety of valuable metabolites, such as lipids, carbohydrates, pigments, and proteins. However, practical applications of microalgae are limited to high-value products due to the high production costs. Algal biotechnology faces challenges such as low energy utilization efficiency and product yield that are currently inadequate to fulfill commercial production. To overcome these challenges, emerging technologies have shown promise to achieve higher production efficiency, including molecular manipulation of photosynthetic efficiency and metabolic activities. Here, we provided an overview of the importance, diversity, and photosynthesis of microalgae, as well as strategies for enhancing their photosynthetic efficiency. We discussed various approaches for improving microalgal photosynthesis, including strain selection and optimization, rational genetic modification, and innovative technologies such as spectral recomposition of light, nanomaterials, advanced cultivation systems, and symbiotic systems. Additionally, we summarized metabolic engineering strategies that focus on optimizing the synthesis of value-added metabolites, such as pigments, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, starch, proteins, and hydrogen in microalgae. By concentrating on improving photosynthetic efficiency and the synthesis of bioactive metabolites, this review provided valuable insights into enhancing microalgae production yields. Overcoming limitations in microalgae production costs can lead to broader applications in various industries. Furthermore, we highlight the potential of these strategies in increasing the efficiency of microalgae as a sustainable source for high-value products.

Genomics and Physiology of Chlorophyll Fluorescence Parameters in Hordeum vulgare L. under Drought and Salt Stresses.

To map the genomic regions and control chlorophyll fluorescence attributes under normal, salinity-, and drought-stress conditions in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) at the seedling stage, an experiment was conducted in 2019-2020 using 106 F8 lines resulting from the cross between Badia × Kavir. Initially, the different chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were evaluated. Under drought stress, the highest decrease was related to REo/CSm (59.56%), and the highest increase was related to dV/dto (77.17%). Also, under salinity stress, the highest decrease was related to Fv/Fo (59.56%), and the highest increase was related to DIo/RC (77.17%). Linkage maps were prepared using 152 SSR polymorphic markers, 72 ISSR alleles, 7 IRAP alleles, 29 CAAT alleles, 27 Scot alleles, and 15 iPBS alleles. The obtained map accounted for 999.2 centi-Morgans (cM) of the barley genome length (92% of the whole barley genome). The results indicated the importance of chromosomes 3, 2, and 7 in controlling ABS/CSm, Area, ETo/CSm, Fm, Fv, and ETo/RC under drought stress. qEToRCD-7, as a major QTL, controlled 18.3% of ETo/RC phenotypic variation under drought stress. Under salinity stress, the regions of chromosomes 2 and 7 (102 cM and 126 cM) controlled the parameters ABS/CSo, Fm, Fo, Fv, TRo/SCo, Area, ETo/CSm, and ETo/CSo. The results showed that chlorophyll fluorescence is an important parameter in the study of drought and salinity effects on barley. This is the first report of the investigation of changes in the genetic structure of quantitative genes controlling the fluorescence parameters associated with barley response to drought and salinity stresses in the Iranian barley RILs population. According to the obtained results, it is possible to use HVPLASC1B and EBmac0713 in normal conditions, ISSR21-2 and ISSR30-4 in drought conditions, and Bmac0047, Scot5-B, CAAT6-C, and ISSR30iPBS2076-4 in saline stress conditions to select genotypes with higher photosynthetic capacity in marker-assisted selection programs.

Perennial intermediate wheatgrass accumulates more soil organic carbon than annual winter wheat – a model assessment

PurposePerennial crops have been suggested as a more sustainable alternative to the currently most common cropping systems. Compared with annual plants, perennial plants produce more biomass and have deeper roots, and are expected to lead to higher soil organic carbon (SOC). This hypothesis, however, has not been well tested for grain crops.MethodsUsing perennial intermediate wheatgrass (IWG, Thinopyrum intermedium) and annual winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) as focal species, and native grassland as reference, we quantified the SOC accumulation via a process-based model, describing water and heat exchanges and carbon-nitrogen cycling in the canopy and soil to a depth of 2 m. The model includes C fixation via photosynthesis, plant biomass growth and litter production, physical protection of SOC, depolymerisation, C mineralisation, nitrification, denitrification, microbial growth, and necromass turnover in the soil. While of general applicability, we considered a sandy loam under warm-summer humid continental climate.ResultsFollowing a conversion from native grassland, IWG reduced SOC losses by at least 38%, especially in the particulate organic carbon (POC) pool, within the top 2 m of soil, compared with annual wheat. Soil microbial biomass and soil respiration were higher in IWG than annual wheat. Shifting from annual wheat to high photosynthetic capacity IWG increased SOC by about 33 g C m−2 y−1 (averaged over a 4-year continuous IWG cropping), with a large fraction of SOC gain stemming from restoring POC.ConclusionCompared with annual grains, perennial grains can increase soil carbon sequestration and maintain SOC at levels nearer to that of native grasslands.
