Seeds of the east african savannah bushBalanites orbicularis as a possible new source of lipids for commercial use

AbstractThe fruits of the native East African savannah bushBalanites orbicularis Sprague were analyzed for their chemical composition. The seeds of these fruits were found to be rich in triacylglycerols with a high content of oleic and linoleic acids. Due to the high essential fatty acid content and the absence of toxic cyclic and oxy fatty acids, the oil from these seeds could be an extremely valuable form of nutrition. The significance of this plant is discussed briefly pertaining to its importance as a food and energy source in countries with arid regions.

Distribution of 14C after Oral Administration of [1-14C]Linoleic Acid in Rats Fed Different Levels of Essential Fatty Acids

Rats from an inbred Sprague-Dawley strain were fed semisynthetic diets with a low [0.3 energy percent (en %)], normal (3 en %) or high (10 en %) content of essential fatty acids (EFA) for at least three generations. Twenty-nine- to 33-day-old male rats were given a single intragastric dose of [1-14C]linoleic acid in olive oil, and the respiratory CO2, urine and feces were collected for 46 hours (expt 1) or 20 hours (expt 2). The 14C activity in respiratory CO2, feces, urine and the carcass was determined in both experiments. In experiment 2 it was also measured in samples of the brown fat, liver, adrenals, white fat, skeletal muscles and brain. In both experiments the rats fed the low EFA diet retained significantly more 14C activity than the rats fed the normal or high EFA diets. In all groups the concentration of label was highest in the brown fat and the adrenals, but the above differences among the groups with respect to 14C retention were mainly observed in the liver, skeletal muscles and brain.

Fractionation of Interesterified Fats for the Preparation of Plastic Fats

AbstractSome specific directed interesterified fat products which had high slip points and had little potentiality for use as edible fats, were crystallized from acetone at different low temperatures. The appropriate fractions obtained from interesterified products of Ricebran containing Mowrah, Palm, Sal and of Sal and Cottonseed mixture (1:1, w/w), appeared to be suitable for utilization as vanaspati and margarine like fat products with high essential fatty acid content and without trans unsaturated fatty acids and also as highly stable deep frying fats and bakery fats.

Isolated brain capillary endothelia: Influence of various levels of essential fatty acids on the acyl group composition of glycerophospholipids

On day seven of gestation. Wistar rats were assigned to a high essential fatty acid (EFA), low EFA, or a fat free diet. The same diets were continued during lactation. On weaning, the offspring were fed the same diets as their mother. Rats were killed at 222 days, brain capillary endothelia isolated, and total lipids extracted from the purified capillaries. The composition of the constituent fatty acids of ethanolamine glycerophospholipid (EGP), choline glycerophospholipid (CGP), and the alk-1-enyl EGP composition from each diet is reported. A decrease in dietary EFA led to reduced proportions of total saturated acyl groups in EGP with no change observed in the total saturated acyl groups from CGP, and an increase in monoenoic fatty acids, particularly 18:1n-9 for each phospholipid class. The proportions of 20:4n-6 in alk-1-enyl EGP were reduced in fat-free fed animals. In addition, the relationship between 20:3n-9 and 20:4n-6 fatty acids in brain capillary endothelia were markedly increased with a reduction in dietary fat. Low EFA and fat deficient animals showed a tendency to sequester 22:6n-3.
