High energy storage performance of KNN-based relaxor ferroelectrics in multiphase-coexisted superparaelectric state

Although K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) possesses large maximum polarization and relatively high breakdown strength, the large remnant polarization constrains their practical applications as energy storage materials. In this work, through multi-element doping, (K0.5−0.5xNa0.5−0.5xBix)(Nb1−xSn0.2xZn0.6xTa0.2x)O3 relaxor ferroelectrics were prepared. As the superparaelectric states (SPE) were adjusted to room temperature, orthorhombic, tetragonal, and cubic phases coexisted, accompanied by the highly dynamic polar nanoregions (PNRs). In particular, a high recoverable energy storage density of 4.5 J/cm3 and an energy storage efficiency of 83% were achieved for the x = 0.125 ceramic, with the variations less than 11% and 4%, respectively, in the wide temperature range of 20–180 °C. These results demonstrate that the multiphase PNRs in the SPE state is an effective strategy for improving the energy storage performance of KNN-based ceramics.

Self-Exfoliating Benzotristriazine Macrocyclic Network: A New 2D Material for High-Performance Electrochemical Energy Storage.

Aza-fused aromatic π-conjugated networks are an important class of 2D graphitic analogs, which are generally constructed using aromatic precursors. Herein, the study describes a new synthetic approach and electrochemical properties of a self-exfoliating benzotristriazine 2D network (BTTN) constructed using aliphatic precursors, under relatively mild conditions. The obtained BTTN exhibits a nanodisc-like morphology, the self-exfoliation tendency of which is ascribed to the presence of structurally different macrocycles with high electronic repulsion between the layers. The benzotristriazine repeat units of BTTN is electroactive and holds higher carbon/nitrogen ratio when compared with the conventional graphitic aza-fused π-conjugated networks. The self-exfoliated BTTN nanodiscs show excellent electrochemical energy storage of 485 and 333 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 in three-electrode and two-electrode measurements, respectively. BTTN in a symmetric coin-cell architecture exhibits a high specific energy value of 46Wh kg-1 at a power density of 1kW kg-1 and shows excellent cyclic stability of 96% for 10000 and 90% for 30000 charge-discharge cycles at a higher current density of 5 A g-1, surpassing the device performance of most of the reported all-organic pseudocapacitive 2D networks.

Introduction of Bi(Zn2/3Sb1/3)O3 to BaTiO3-based ceramics for high energy storage performance

In this study, (1-x)BaTiO3-xBi(Zn2/3Sb1/3)O3 ((1-x)BT-xBZS) ceramics were designed and tested. With the introduction of BZS, it was found that the grain size of the ceramics was increased, which increased the breakdown field strength (Eb) of the ceramics and further improved the energy storage density. The 0.84BT-0.16BZS ceramic achieved both high recoverable energy density (Wrec = 2.32 J/cm3) and energy efficiency (η = 89.7 %) at 620 kV/cm. In addition, excellent temperature stability (20-160 °C) and frequency stability (1–200 Hz) of recoverable energy density have been obtained under 300 kV/cm. A high power density of 28.93 MW/cm3 and transient discharge time (t0.9 = 1.07 μs) were achieved for 0.84BT-0.16BZS ceramic under 200 kV/cm.

High Energy Storage Performance in Pb1−xLax(Hf0.45Sn0.55)0.995O3 Antiferroelectric Ceramics

Energy storage efficiency (η) and large recoverable energy density (Wre) are necessary for antiferroelectric materials in order to develop antiferroelectric-based dielectric capacitors with exceptional energy storage capacity. In the present paper, the effect of doping La3+ on the energy storage capacity of Pb1−xLax(Hf0.45Sn0.55)0.995O3 antiferroelectric ceramics was studied. Adjusting the content of La and changing the phase structure of PLHS from antiferroelectric to relaxor ferroelectric gradually, which narrowed its hysteresis loop, yielded a high energy storage efficiency of 81.9% and the maximum breakdown field strength of 200 kV/cm when x = 2 mol%. In addition, the recoverable energy density and energy storage efficiency both showed excellent temperature stability and frequency stability in the temperature range of 10–110 °C and the frequency range of 10–100 Hz, suggesting that Pb0.98La0.02(Hf0.45Sn0.55)0.995O3 are favorable materials candidates for the preparation of pulsed-power capacitors that can be used in a wide range of conditions.

Novel NH4V4O10-Reduced Graphene Oxide Cathodes for Zinc-Ion Batteries: Theoretical Predictions and Experimental Validation

This investigation explores the potential of enhancing aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) through the introduction of a novel cathode material, NH4V4O10 (NVO), combined with reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT), it was hypothesized that the incorporation of rGO would increase the interlayer spacing of NVO and diminish the charge transfer interactions, thus promoting enhanced diffusion of Zn2+ ions. These theoretical predictions were substantiated by experimental data acquired from hydrothermal synthesis, which indicated a marked increase in interlayer spacing. Significantly, the NVO–rGO composite exhibits remarkable cyclic durability, maintaining 95% of its initial specific capacity of 507 mAh g−1 after 600 cycles at a current density of 5 A g−1. The electrochemical performance of NVO–rGO not only surpasses that of pristine NVO but also outperforms the majority of existing vanadium oxide cathode materials reported in the literature. This study underscores the effective integration of theoretical insights and experimental validation, contributing to the advancement of high-performance energy storage technologies.

CuO nanoparticles embedded in laser-induced graphene for flexible planar micro-supercapacitors

Utilizing predefined electrode geometries, laser direct writing technology is employed to intricately inscribe flexible polyimide (PI) films, thereby inducing porous graphene patterned electrodes for flexible planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs), which greatly facilitates the integration of MSCs into functional devices for power supply. Nevertheless, prevailing challenges confront current flexible MSCs relying on laser-induced graphene (LIG), including the constrained electrochemical functionality of pure LIG electrodes and the uneven incorporation of heterogeneous constituents within LIG electrodes. In light of these challenges, this study delves into the fundamental mechanism underlying the formation of polyimide (PI) films and introduces an innovative approach to uniformly integrate CuO nanoparticles into the poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) precursor solution. The subsequent imidization process culminates in the synthesis of a CuO-embedded PI film. The research progresses to the fabrication of shape-controllable CuO/LIG patterned electrodes utilizing a precision laser direct writing technique, and the subsequent construction of flexible planar MSCs. Harnessing the synergistic interactions between the dual components within the electrode, the resulting MSC possesses an impressive areal capacitance of 6.45 mF·cm-2, coupled with an energy density of 0.896 mWh·cm-2 and a power density of 0.081 mW·cm-2, thus illustrating the potential of this innovative material integration for high-performance flexible energy storage implementations.

Interfacial Coupling toward Bismuth Sulfide/MXene Heterostructures Empowering Reversible Magnesium Storage.

Bismuth-based compounds based on conversion-alloying reactions of multielectron transfer have attracted extensive attention as alternative anode candidates for rechargeable magnesium batteries (rMBs). However, the inadequate magnesium storage capability induced by the sluggish kinetics, poor reversibility, and terrible structural stability impedes their practical utilization. Herein, monodispersed Bi2S3 anchored on MXene has been prepared via a simple self-assembly strategy to induce the interfacial bonding of Ti-S and Ti-O-Bi. Unique superiority, including good electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, and rapid charge transfer, is cleverly integrated together in the Bi2S3/MXene heterostructures, which endowed heterostructures with enhanced magnesium storage performance. Density functional theory calculations combined with kinetic behavior analyses confirm the favorable charge transfer and low ion diffusion barrier in hybrids. Furthermore, a stepwise insertion-conversion-alloying reaction mechanism is revealed in depth by ex situ investigations, which may also account for promoting performance. This work provides significant inspirations for constructing ingenious multicompositional hybrids by strong interfacial coupling engineering toward high-performance energy storage devices.

Enhancing Energy Storage Performance of 0.85Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.15LaFeO3 Lead-Free Ferroelectric Ceramics via Buried Sintering.

Bismuth sodium titanate (Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3, BNT) ceramics are expected to replace traditional lead-based materials because of their excellent ferroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics, and they are widely used in the industrial, military, and medical fields. However, BNT ceramics have a low breakdown field strength, which leads to unsatisfactory energy storage performance. In this work, 0.85Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-0.15LaFeO3 ceramics are prepared by the traditional high-temperature solid-phase reaction method, and their energy storage performance is greatly enhanced by improving the process of buried sintering. The results show that the buried sintering method can inhibit the formation of oxygen vacancy, reduce the volatilization of Bi2O3, and greatly improve the breakdown field strength of the ceramics so that the energy storage performance can be significantly enhanced. The breakdown field strength increases from 210 kV/cm to 310 kV/cm, and the energy storage density increases from 1.759 J/cm3 to 4.923 J/cm3. In addition, the energy storage density and energy storage efficiency of these ceramics have good frequency stability and temperature stability. In this study, the excellent energy storage performance of the ceramics prepared by the buried sintering method provides an effective idea for the design of lead-free ferroelectric ceramics with high energy storage performance and greatly expands its application field.

Optimisation of Mo doping to form NiCoMo ternary sulphides for high performance charge storage.

Multi-component synergy and the rational design of structures are effective methods for preparing electrode materials for high-performance energy storage devices. Transition metal-based hydroxides offer advantages such as a large specific surface area, large interlayer spacing, multiple redox states, and high theoretical capacity, making them commonly used as positive materials for supercapacitors. However, challenges like low conductivity and severe agglomeration limit their practical application. This study focuses on the preparation of Ni, Co, and Mo ternary transition metal hydroxides by incorporating the Mo element to optimize their structure. Furthermore, sulfide ions were utilized in an ion exchange process to replace hydroxides, resulting in the formation of NiCoMo ternary sulfide electrode materials. By adjusting the amount of Mo added, a spherical nanoneedle-shaped N2C1MS0.2-2 electrode material was successfully synthesized. This electrode exhibited a specific capacity of 2094 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled with activated carbon as the negative electrode and N2C1MS0.2-2 as the positive electrode, which had an energy density of 46.2 W h kg-1 at a power density of 800 W kg-1, a capacity retention of 89.7% and a coulombic efficiency of 97.8% after 10 000 cycles. This study provides a reference for the design and preparation of ternary sulphide electrode materials.

Monoclinic Silver Vanadate (Ag0.33V2O5) as a High-Capacity Stable Cathode Material for Aqueous Manganese Batteries.

Aqueous rechargeable metal batteries have recently garnered considerable attention owing to their low cost, sufficient capacity, and the use of non-flammable water-based electrolytes. Among them, manganese batteries are particularly favored because of their stability, abundance, affordability, and high energy density. Despite their advantages, Mn storage host structures remain underexplored. Therefore, developing innovative host materials is crucial for advancing this field. In this paper, the study reports for the first time, the use of Ag0.33V2O5 as a cathode material in aqueous manganese batteries. The study explains the displacement/intercalation behavior of manganese and silver using electrochemical, structural, and spectroscopic analyses. Additionally, it is shown that cation (Ag+, Mn2+, H+) diffusion pathways can be simulated using diffusion-barrier calculations. Finally, the study demonstrates high-performance manganese batteries that exhibit a remarkable reversible capacity of ≈261.9 mAhg-1 at a current of 0.1 Ag-1 and an excellent cycle retention of 69.1% after 2000 cycles at a current density of 1.5 A/g. The findings of this study contribute to the advancement of aqueous manganese battery technology, offering a promising pathway for developing safer, more cost-effective, and high-performance energy storage systems.

HBN/PVDF‐HFP and BNNS/PVDF‐HFP nanocomposites as flexible and lightweight dielectric capacitors: High energy storage performance via electrically insulating nanoparticles

AbstractAs the energy demand continuously increases, polymer‐based materials have attracted much attention for energy storage systems as dielectric capacitors due to their higher power density and charge–discharge rate than lithium‐ion batteries and supercapacitors. However, it is necessary to increase the energy density of dielectric capacitors. In this context, poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene), PVDF‐HFP, matrix nanocomposites are produced by solution casting method reinforced with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles and silane‐modified boron nitride nanosheets ‐BNNSs‐ (BNNS‐VTS) up to 10 wt.% filler content. The effects of filler content and surface modification of hBN/BNNSs on PVDF‐HFP matrix nanocomposites' microstructure, phase evolution, crystalization behavior, dielectric properties, and energy storage performance are discussed. 4% hBN/PVDF‐HFP nanocomposite demonstrates 641 MV·m−1 of breakdown strength and 23.2 J·cm−3 of discharged energy density due to hexagonal boron nitride's excellent electrical insulating behavior. The achieved values are 3.0 and 10.5 times superior to the values of the neat thin film, respectively, and they are noteworthy among hBN‐ or BNNS‐reinforced PVDF‐based nanocomposites, even in multi‐layered structures. Furthermore, 4% hBN/PVDF‐HFP presents a giant charge–discharge energy efficiency (92%). It is thus demonstrated that hBN/PVDF‐HFP nanocomposites hold a great potential to be used in energy storage applications as flexible and lightweight dielectric capacitors.Highlights PVDF‐HFP matrix nanocomposites for electrical energy storage as flexible dielectric capacitors hBN NPs and silane‐modified BNNSs are reinforced into the matrix by 0–10 wt.%. The effects of filler content and surface modification of hBN/BNNSs are discussed. 4% hBN loading results in 23.2 J·cm−3 energy density and 92% efficiency at 641 MV·m−1 breakdown strength. Those metrics are relatively high in hBN‐ or BNNS‐reinforced PVDF‐based nanocomposites.

Synergistic integration of MoS2 nanopetals and SnO2 quantum dots for enhanced supercapacitor performance

This study presents the synthesis and electrochemical application of MoS2 nanopetals/SnO2 quantum dots (MS/SQD) nanocomposites. Employing a hydrothermal method for MoS2 and a simple mixing process for SnO2 using thiourea and tin chloride dihydrate, we engineered a nanocomposite that significantly enhances supercapacitor performance. Characterization through XRD, FE-SEM, FE-TEM, and XPS confirmed the optimal morphology and structural integrity of the MS/SQD. Electrochemical evaluations using a three-electrode system highlighted the nanocomposite’s exceptional electrochemical attributes: it achieved a specific capacitance of up to 505 F·g−1 at 1 A·g−1 and maintained 350 F·g−1 at a high current density of 10 A·g−1, with nearly 99% capacity retention after 5,000 cycles. The novelty lies in the synergistic effects of SnO2 quantum dots, which enhance the MoS2 nanopetal’s structural integrity, conductivity, and electrochemical reactivity, thereby improving charge transfer efficiency and ion diffusion. These findings underscore the MS/SQD nanocomposite’s potential for high-performance energy storage applications.

Efficient Fabrication of Disordered Graphene with Improved Ion Accessibility, Ion Conductivity, and Density for High-Performance Compact Capacitive Energy Storage.

High-performance compact capacitive energy storage is vital for many modern application fields, including grid power buffers, electric vehicles, and portable electronics. However, achieving exceptional volumetric performance in supercapacitors is still challenging and requires effective fabrication of electrode films with high ion-accessible surface area and fast ion diffusion capability while simultaneously maintaining high density. Herein, a facile, efficient, and scalable method is developed for the fabrication of dense, porous, and disordered graphene through spark-induced disorderly opening of graphene stacks combined with mechanical compression. The obtained disordered graphene achieves a high density of 1.18gcm-3, sixfold enhanced ion conductivity compared to common laminar graphene, and an ultrahigh volumetric capacitance of 297Fcm-3 in ionic liquid electrolyte. The fabricated stack cells deliver a volumetric energy density of 94.2WhL-1 and a power density of 13.7kWL-1, representing a critical breakthrough in capacitive energy storage. Moreover, the proposed disordered graphene electrodes are assembled into ionogel-based all-solid-state pouch cells with high mechanical stability and multiple optional outputs, demonstrating great potential for flexible energy storage in practical applications.

Advancing Electrochemical Energy Storage: The Synergistic Impact of Sulfur Nano-Confinement in Hierarchically Porous Jute-Derived Activated Carbon for Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance

The availability of energy is a cornerstone for the modernization, automation, and economic growth of nations. With the rapid depletion of fossil fuels and rising environmental concerns, such as CO2 emissions leading to global warming, there has been an intensified search for alternative, renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. However, their intermittent nature necessitates robust electric energy storage systems for effectively harnessing these resources. Electrochemical energy storage devices, particularly batteries and supercapacitors, have emerged as a focal point of recent research due to their potential to bridge this gap. While supercapacitors are known for their high power density and long cycle life, they typically exhibit limited energy density. Recent advancements have shown that composites combining carbonaceous materials with redox-active nanomaterials can significantly enhance supercapacitors' electrochemical performance. In this context, our research explores the development of hierarchically porous activated carbon nanosheets (JAC) derived from jute, an abundantly available biomass. Using a straightforward pyrolysis process, we have investigated its potential in supercapacitor applications. The prepared JAC, when employed as an electrode material in a symmetric supercapacitor with a glycerol-based bio-electrolyte, demonstrated higher specific capacitance compared to its commercial counterparts. Further innovation was achieved through the introduction of sulfur doping in JAC (S-doped JAC). This novel approach leverages the inherent porous nanosheet morphology of JAC and heteroatom modification to yield exceptional electrochemical performance. Our findings reveal that the S-doped JAC composite, particularly the variant with 25% sublimed sulfur (SJAC-25), significantly outperforms the standard JAC in terms of specific capacitance (230 F/g vs. 130 F/g at 1.0 A/g current density) in a glycerol-KOH bio-based electrolyte. Moreover, a symmetric supercapacitor assembled with SJAC-25 showcased an impressive energy density of 32 Wh/kg at a power density of 500 W/kg, maintaining 28 Wh/kg even at a heightened power density of 2500 W/kg. This demonstrates its capability to retain high energy efficiency under varying power conditions. Additionally, the SJAC-25 based supercapacitor exhibited remarkable durability, with about 94% capacitance retention and 86% Coulombic efficiency after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles. Our research not only highlights the potential of processed bio-waste as a viable material for energy storage but also introduces an advanced, scalable, and straightforward synthesis method. This method could pave the way for the preparation of highly porous and sulfur-doped nanoporous carbon, setting a new benchmark for high-performance electrochemical energy storage applications.

Phase Engineering of Two-Dimensional WS2 Nanostructures for Superior Hybrid Supercapacitors

Two-dimensional (2D) tungsten sulfide (WS2) has recently emerged as a nontrivial material for electrochemical applications; however, the boundaries associated with its 1T (instability) and 2H (low electrical conductivity) phases limit its electrochemical parameters. In this work, this issue is addressed using an exclusive chemical approach to evolve a dual-phase 1T-2H WS2 heterostructure that combines two different 1T (trigonal) and 2H (hexagonal) phases directly on the current collector which demonstrated 2D transformable phase structure, large interlayer distance, and highly exposed edge active sites. A simple inert-atmosphere annealing approach under phosphorus vapors is designed to elicit a fractional phase conversion of WS2 from conventional 2H to the 1T phase, where phosphorus is accommodated in the WS2 interspace and lattice, resulting in interlayer expansion. Theoretical calculations confirmed that the 1T WS2 structure formed after phosphorus doping exhibits semimetallic feature with no band gap, thereby elucidating the high electrical conductivity. The presence of edge-enriched metallic phase and interlayer engineering of 1T-2H WS2 heterostructure validates the exceptional sodium (Na+) ion intercalation when tested in hybrid supercapacitor (HSCs) against Prussian blue analog (PBA) cathodes. As a result, the assembled HSC cell with a 1T-2H WS2 heterostructured anode and a CuFe-PBA cathode shows superior specific energy of 65.5 Wh kg-1 at a specific power of 784 W kg-1, and maintains 75% rate capability and 95.7%cycling stability over 10,000 cycles. This work paves a technique for engineering a simple phase transition of 2D materials and sheds light on the expansion of high-performance next-generation energy storage systems.

Development of Organic Positive Electrodes for Rechargeable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries for Stationary Energy Storage Systems

The rising concern towards the amount of anthropogenic carbon emissions and their effects on the environment has motivated the transition away from fossil fuels. The implementation of renewable energy sources has promoted the decarbonization of the power sector, but the variability of wind and solar energy necessitates the parallel deployment of high-performance energy storage infrastructure to ensure a reliable on-demand supply of green electricity to the grid. To this end, aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising new option for stationary energy storage owing to their high safety and low cost, when compared to established storage technologies like lithium-ion batteries. However, ZIBs are still limited by several technological challenges that hinder their uptake for commercial energy storage installations. In particular, the positive electrode materials, mostly comprised of metal oxides, are restraining the energy density and stability of the batteries and are yet under investigation. Low cost, long cycle life, and natural abundance are required properties of materials used in batteries for stationary energy storage. The search for materials with these properties has motivated the investigation of alternatives to metal oxides. One group of materials attracting considerable research attention is organic compounds which offer advantages like their natural abundance and high theoretical capacities. In this work, we developed an organic positive electrode for ZIBs using carbonyl groups as redox-active centers to provide energy storage capacity at round-trip energy efficiencies that are higher than the conventionally utilized manganese oxide electrodes. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of the conductive carbon additive on the deliverable capacity of the battery and elucidated the charge storage mechanism of this positive electrode material through detailed characterization. The results indicated that both Zn2+ and H+ are involved in the energy storage process of this organic electrode material. In addition to studying the energy storage process, degradation mechanisms were identified through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS). Both dissolution of the reduced form of the active material from the electrode and the formation of unwanted decomposition products are important contributors to the capacity fade of the battery. The technological and scientific insights provided in this presentation will thereby contribute towards the development of high-performance and naturally abundant electrode materials for the next generation of ZIBs to enable clean energy grid storage.

Shrinking Lithium-Ion Batteries by Replacing Metal Current Collectors with MXene Films

The demand for high-performance energy storage devices has been rapidly increasing due to the growing need for renewable energy integration and portable electronics. Traditional lithium-ion batteries have become the preferred choice for numerous applications due to their impressive energy density, but they are reaching limitations of capacity. At the cell level, around 25 w% consists of passive components like current collectors, conductive additives, binders, and separators. Especially, copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) foils have been commonly used as current collectors for the anode and cathode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), contributing around 7 wt% and 8 wt%, respectively, to the overall weight. Despite constituting a considerable portion of the battery, these passive components often receive less attention in the development of high-power batteries. In recent years, the focus has been on decreasing the thickness of these metal current collectors and developing lightweight alternative materials to enhance energy efficiency to potentially boost the performance metrics of a Li-ion battery cell to boost the performance metrics of a Li-ion battery cell. MXenes, a family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides emerge as a promising solution to address this limitation. In particular, Ti3C2T x MXene possesses a 2D morphology with excellent electrical conductivity (up to 20,000 S/cm), high surface area, good mechanical properties, and hydrophilicity. These attributes, coupled with ease of processing, make it very suitable for battery passive components. In this study, we focus on replacing the conventional copper current collector with thinner MXene film current collectors for high-mass loading graphite anode electrodes. Our results show improved capacities and rate performances of electrode materials using Ti3C2T x MXene current collectors while also reducing electrode weight and thickness. The electrode-level gravimetric capacity significantly increased by 98.5 mAh g-1 (from 140 mAh g-1 for Cu@graphite to 238.5 mAh g-1 for MXene@graphite). The areal and volumetric capacities increased as well. This study highlights the potential of MXene current collectors in improving the performance of lithium-ion batteries, paving the way for more efficient and lightweight energy storage solutions.

Facile assembly of flexible, stretchable and attachable symmetric microsupercapacitors with wide working voltage windows and favorable durability

With the increasing development of intelligent robots and wearable electronics, the demand for high-performance flexible energy storage devices is drastically increasing. In this study, flexible symmetric microsupercapacitors (MSCs) that could operate in a wide working voltage window were developed by combining laser-direct-writing graphene (LG) electrodes with a phosphoric acid-nonionic surfactant liquid crystal (PA-NI LC) gel electrolyte. To increase the flexibility and enhance the conformal ability of the MSC devices to anisotropic surfaces, after the interdigitated LG formed on the polyimide (PI) film surface, the devices were further transferred onto a flexible, stretchable and transparent polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate; this substrate displayed favorable flexibility and mechanical characteristics in the bending test. Furthermore, the electrochemical performances of the symmetric MSCs with various electrode widths (300, 400, 500 and 600 μm) were evaluated. The findings revealed that symmetric MSC devices could operate in a large voltage range (0–1.5 V); additionally, the device with a 300 μm electrode width (MSC-300) exhibited the largest areal capacitance of 2.3 mF cm−2 at 0.07 mA cm−2 and an areal (volumetric) energy density of 0.72 μWh cm−2 (0.36 mWh cm−3) at 55.07 μW cm−2 (27.54 mW cm−3), along with favorable mechanical and cycling stability. After charging for ~20 s, two MSC-300 devices connected in series could supply energy to a calculator to operate for ~130 s, showing its practical application potential as an energy storage device. Moreover, the device displayed favorable reversibility, stability and durability. After 12 months of aging in air at room temperature, its electrochemical performance was not altered, and after charging-discharging measurements for 5000 cycles at 0.07 mA cm−2, ~93.6% of the areal capacitance was still retained; these results demonstrated its practical long-term application potential as an energy storage device.

High energy storage performance in BTO-based ferroelectric films

Dielectric capacitors play an increasingly important role in modern electronic power systems due to their ultrahigh charging and discharging speeds and power density. Much research has focused on enhancing dielectric breakdown strength to achieve better energy storage performance; however, this increases the potential for heat generation and unexpected insulation failures, thereby affecting the stability and lifespan of devices. This study introduces a small amount of Na+ dopants at the A-site of BaTiO3, inducing lattice distortions and enhancing local polarization to increase energy storage density rather than through enhancing breakdown strength. The introduction of Na+ enhances the ferroelectric properties, with polar nano-regions (PNRs) gradually evolving into long-range ordered large domains. In the Ba0.985Na0.015TiO3 films, the coexistence and coupling of abundant PNRs with a few long-range ordered ferroelectric domains result in high saturation polarization and low residual polarization. At a moderate electric field of 2.3 MV cm−1, an ultrahigh energy density of 44.3 J cm−3 and a high energy storage efficiency of 78.6 % were obtained. Additionally, the film exhibits excellent frequency stability (100 Hz-20 kHz), temperature stability (30–180 °C), fatigue resistance (107 cycles), and high pulsed discharge energy density, along with great thermal stability. This work provides new insights into achieving exceptional energy storage performance in single-phase films.

Bi2WO6 and TiS2 composite nanostructures displaying synergetic boosted energy storage in supercapacitor

The enhancement in the capacitance of a supercapacitor has been successfully achieved by synthesizing Bi2WO6 (BW), TiS2 (T), and Bi2WO6/TiS2 (BW/T) composites utilizing the hydrothermal process. The possible growth mechanism has also been presented. The morphological and structural characteristics of the cultivated samples were observed using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, and UV–vis spectroscopy techniques. TiS2 nano platelets uniformly dispersed across the hierarchically opened surface of Bi2WO6 in the synthesized hierarchical composite. This leads to an increase in surface porosity and surface area, which in turn enhances the transport of electrons and ions on the composite BW/T surface. The optimal electrode BW/T@40 % composite electrode shown a substantial enhancement in particular capacitance (1153.3 F/g) compared to the separate BW (523.7 F/g) and T (453.3 F/g) electrodes due to its rapid ion transfer, many active sites on its large surface area, and strong synergistic impact. Furthermore, the BW/T@40 % combination demonstrated exceptional stability, with over 92 % of its capacitance maintained after 4500th cycles and b value (0.71) proved the supercapacitor behavior. Therefore, BW/T@40 % binary metal oxide and sulfide composites exhibit improved specific capacitance and greatly prolonged life-cycle, confirming its potential use in high-performance energy storage devices.
