Cosmic-ray-driven enhancement of the C0/CO abundance ratio in W 51 C

Abstract We examine spatial variations of the C0$/$CO abundance ratio (XC/CO) in the vicinity of the γ-ray supernova remnant W 51 C, based on [C i] (3P1–3P0), 12CO(1–0), and 13CO(1–0) observations with the ASTE and Nobeyama 45 m telescopes. We find that XC/CO varies in a range of 0.02–0.16 (0.05 in median) inside the molecular clouds of AV > 100 mag, where photodissociation of CO by the interstellar UV is negligible. Furthermore, XC/CO is locally enhanced by a factor of up to four near the W 51 C center, depending on the projected distance from the W 51 C center. In high-AV molecular clouds, XC/CO is determined by the ratio of the cosmic-ray (CR) ionization rate to the H2 density, and we find no clear spatial variation of the H2 density against the projected distance. Hence, the high CR ionization rate may locally enhance XC/CO near the W 51 C center. We also find that the observed spatial extent of the enhanced XC/CO (∼17 pc) is consistent with the diffusion distance of CRs with an energy of 100 MeV. This fact suggests that the low-energy CRs accelerated in W 51 C enhance XC/CO. The CR ionization rate in the XC/CO-enhanced cloud is estimated to be 3 × 10−16 s−1 on the basis of time-dependent photodissociation region simulations of XC/CO, the value of which is 30 times higher than that in the standard Galactic environment. These results demonstrate that [C i] is a powerful probe to investigate the interaction between CRs and the interstellar medium for a wide area in the vicinity of supernova remnants.

Cosmic ray ionization rate versus dust fraction: Which plays a crucial role in the early evolution of the circumstellar disc?

ABSTRACTWe study the formation and early evolution of young stellar objects (YSOs) using three-dimensional non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to investigate the effect of cosmic ray ionization rate and dust fraction (or amount of dust grains) on circumstellar disc formation. Our simulations show that a higher cosmic ray ionization rate and a lower dust fraction lead to (i) a smaller magnetic resistivity of ambipolar diffusion, (ii) a smaller disc size and mass, and (iii) an earlier timing of outflow formation and a greater angular momentum of the outflow. In particular, at a high cosmic ray ionization rate, the discs formed early in the simulation are dispersed by magnetic braking on a time-scale of about 104 yr. Our results suggest that the cosmic ray ionization rate has particularly a large impact on the formation and evolution of discs, while the impact of the dust fraction is not significant.

PDFCHEM: Fast simulations of the chemical ISM using probability distributions

We present PDFCHEM, a new numerical method able to compute the photodissociation region (PDR) chemistry of large-scale inhomogeneous ISM regions using probability distributions of physical parameters as an input. We distinguish between two visual extinctions, namely the ‘effective’ (AV,eff) referring to the local extinction and the ‘observed’ (AV,obs) referring to the extinction taken from observations. Using 1,200 pre-calculated PDR simulations, we apply PDFCHEM to two hypothetical AV,obs−PDFs, representing a diffuse region and a Giant Molecular Cloud. PDFchem is fast and can replace the computationally expensive hydrodynamical models in understanding the chemistry of the ISM in different environments, including at low metallicities and high cosmic-ray ionization rates.

Context. Isotopic fractionation is an important tool for investigating the chemical history of our Solar System. In particular, the isotopic fraction of nitrogen (14N/15N) is lower in comets and other pristine Solar System bodies with respect to the value measured for the protosolar nebula, suggesting a local chemical enrichment of 15N during the formation of the Solar System. Therefore, interferometric studies of nitrogen fractionation in Solar System precursors are needed for us to obtain clues about our astrochemical origins. Aims. In this work we have investigated the variation in the 14N/15N ratio in one of the closest analogues of the environment in which the Solar System was born: the protocluster OMC-2 FIR4. We present the first comparison at high angular resolution between HCN and N2H+ using interferometric data. Methods. We analysed observations of the HCN isotopologues H13CN and HC15N in the OMC-2 FIR4 protocluster. Specifically, we observed the transitions H13CN (1−0) and HC15N (1−0) with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) within the context of the IRAM Seeds Of Life In Space (SOLIS) Large Program. We combined our results with analysis of archival data obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array of N2H+ and its 15N isotopologues. Results. Our results show a small regional variation in the 14N/15N ratio for HCN, from ~250 to 500. The ratios in the central regions of FIR4, where the candidate protostars are located, are largely consistent with one another and within that range (~300). They also show little variation from the part of the protocluster known to harbour a high cosmic-ray ionisation rate to the portion with a lower rate. We also found a small variation in the 14N/15N ratio of N2H+ across different regions, from ~200 to ~400. Conclusions. These results suggest that local changes in the physical parameters occurring on the small linear scales probed by our observations in the protocluster do not seem to affect the 14N/15N ratio in either HCN or N2H+ and hence that this is independent of the molecule used. Moreover, the high level of irradiation due to cosmic rays does not affect the N fractionation either.

Modelling cosmic masers in C-type shock waves – the coexistence of Class I CH3OH and 1720 MHz OH masers

ABSTRACT The collisional pumping of CH3OH and OH masers in non-dissociative C-type shock waves is studied. The chemical processes responsible for the evolution of molecule abundances in the shock wave are considered in detail. The large velocity gradient approximation is used to model radiative transfer in molecular lines. We present calculations of the optical depth in maser transitions of CH3OH and OH for a grid of C-type shock models that vary in cosmic ray ionization rate, gas density, and shock speed. We show that pre-shock gas densities nH, tot = 2 × 104–2 × 105 cm−3 are optimal for the pumping of methanol maser transitions. A complete collisional dissociation of methanol at the shock front takes place for shock speeds us ≳ 25 km s−1. At high pre-shock gas density nH, tot = 2 × 106 cm−3, the collisional dissociation of methanol takes place at shock speeds just above the threshold speed us ≈ 15–17.5 km s−1, corresponding to sputtering of icy mantles of dust grains. We show that the methanol maser transition E 4−1 → 30 at 36.2 GHz has an optical depth |τ| higher than that of the transition A+ 70 → 61 at 44.1 GHz at high cosmic ray ionization rate $\zeta _\mathrm{H_2} \gtrsim 10^{-15}$ s−1 and pre-shock gas density nH, tot = 2 × 104 cm−3. These results can be applied to the interpretation of observational data on methanol masers near supernova remnants and in molecular clouds of the Central Molecular Zone. At the same time, a necessary condition for the operation of 1720 MHz OH masers is a high ionization rate of molecular gas, $\zeta _\mathrm{H_2} \gtrsim 10^{-15}$ s−1. We find that physical conditions conducive to the operation of both hydroxyl and methanol masers are cosmic ray ionization rate $\zeta _\mathrm{H_2} \approx 10^{-15}$–3 × 10−15 s−1 and a narrow range of shock speeds 15 ≲ us ≲ 20 km s−1. The simultaneous observations of OH and CH3OH masers may provide restrictions on the physical parameters of the interstellar medium in the vicinity of supernova remnants.

The distribution and origin of C2H in NGC 253 from ALCHEMI

Context. Observations of chemical species can provide insights into the physical conditions of the emitting gas however it is important to understand how their abundances and excitation vary within different heating environments. C2H is a molecule typically found in PDR regions of our own Galaxy but there is evidence to suggest it also traces other regions undergoing energetic processing in extragalactic environments. Aims. As part of the ALCHEMI ALMA large program, we map the emission of C2H in the central molecular zone of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 at 1.6″ (28 pc) resolution and characterize it to understand its chemical origins. Methods. We used spectral modeling of the N = 1−0 through N = 4−3 rotational transitions of C2H to derive the C2H column densities towards the dense clouds in NGC 253. We then use chemical modeling, including photodissociation region (PDR), dense cloud, and shock models to investigate the chemical processes and physical conditions that are producing the molecular emission. Results. We find high C2H column densities of ∼1015 cm−2 detected towards the dense regions of NGC 253. We further find that these column densities cannot be reproduced if it is assumed that the emission arises from the PDR regions at the edge of the clouds. Instead, we find that the C2H abundance remains high even in the high visual extinction interior of these clouds and that this is most likely caused by a high cosmic-ray ionization rate.

Modeling chemistry during star formation: water deuteration in dynamic star-forming regions

Context. Recent observations of the HDO/H2O ratio toward protostars in isolated and clustered environments show an apparent dichotomy, where isolated sources show higher D/H ratios than clustered counterparts. Establishing which physical and chemical processes create this differentiation can provide new insights into the chemical evolution of water during star formation and the chemical diversity during the star formation process and in young planetary systems. Aims. We seek to determine to what degree the local cloud environment influences the D/H ratio of water in the hot corinos toward low-mass protostars and establish which physical and chemical conditions can reproduce the observed HDO/H2O and D2O/HDO ratios in hot corinos. Methods. The evolution of water during star formation is modeled using 3D physicochemical models of a dynamic star-forming environment. The physical evolution during the protostellar collapse is described by tracer particles from a 3D MHD simulation of a molecular cloud region. Each particle trajectory is post-processed using RADMC-3D to calculate the temperature and radiation field. The chemical evolution is simulated using a three-phase grain-surface chemistry model and the results are compared with interferometric observations of H2O, HDO, and D2O in hot corinos toward low-mass protostars. Results. The physicochemical model reproduces the observed HDO/H2O and D2O/HDO ratios in hot corinos, but shows no correlation with cloud environment when similar initial conditions are tested. The observed dichotomy in water D/H ratios requires variation in the initial conditions, for example the duration and temperature of the prestellar phase. Reproducing the observed D/H ratios in hot corinos requires a prestellar phase duration t ~ 1−3 Myr and temperatures in the range T ~ 10−20 K prior to collapse. Furthermore, high cosmic-ray ionization rates (ξH2 ~ 10−15 s−1) appear to be incompatible with the observed D/H ratios toward low-mass protostars. Conclusions. This work demonstrates that the observed differentiation between clustered and isolated protostars stems from differences in the molecular cloud or prestellar core conditions and does not arise during the protostellar collapse itself. The observed D/H ratios for water in hot corinos are consistent with chemical inheritance of water, and no resetting during the protostellar collapse, providing a direct link between the prestellar chemistry and the hot corino.

Deuterium chemodynamics of massive pre-stellar cores

ABSTRACT High levels of deuterium fractionation of N2H+ (i.e. $\mathrm{D^{{\mathrm{N_2H^+}}}_{\text{frac}}}$≳ 0.1) are often observed in pre-stellar cores (PSCs) and detection of N2D+ is a promising method to identify elusive massive PSCs. However, the physical and chemical conditions required to reach such high levels of deuteration are still uncertain, as is the diagnostic utility of N2H+ and N2D+ observations of PSCs. We perform 3D magnetohydrodynamics simulations of a massive, turbulent, magnetized PSC, coupled with a sophisticated deuteration astrochemical network. Although the core has some magnetic/turbulent support, it collapses under gravity in about one free-fall time, which marks the end of the simulations. Our fiducial model achieves relatively low $\mathrm{D^{{\mathrm{N_2H^+}}}_{\text{frac}}}$∼0.002 during this time. We then investigate effects of initial ortho-para ratio of H2 ($\mathrm{OPR^{H_2}}$), temperature, cosmic ray (CR) ionization rate, CO and N-species depletion factors, and prior PSC chemical evolution. We find that high CR ionization rates and high depletion factors allow the simulated $\mathrm{D^{{\mathrm{N_2H^+}}}_{\text{frac}}}$ and absolute abundances to match observational values within one free-fall time. For $\mathrm{OPR^{H_2}}$, while a lower initial value helps the growth of $\mathrm{D^{{\mathrm{N_2H^+}}}_{\text{frac}}}$, the spatial structure of deuteration is too widespread compared to observed systems. For an example model with elevated CR ionization rates and significant heavy element depletion, we then study the kinematic and dynamic properties of the core as traced by its N2D+ emission. The core, undergoing quite rapid collapse, exhibits disturbed kinematics in its average velocity map. Still, because of magnetic support, the core often appears kinematically subvirial based on its N2D+ velocity dispersion.

CO Depletion in Protoplanetary Disks: A Unified Picture Combining Physical Sequestration and Chemical Processing

Abstract The gas-phase CO abundance (relative to hydrogen) in protoplanetary disks decreases by up to two orders of magnitude from its interstellar medium value of ∼10−4, even after accounting for freeze-out and photodissociation. Previous studies have shown that while local chemical processing of CO and the sequestration of CO ice on solids in the midplane can both contribute, neither of these processes appears capable of consistently reaching the observed depletion factors on the relevant timescale of 1–3 Myr. In this study, we model these processes simultaneously by including a compact chemical network (centered on carbon and oxygen) to 2D (r + z) simulations of the outer (r > 20 au) disk regions that include turbulent diffusion, pebble formation, and pebble dynamics. In general, we find that the CO/H2 abundance is a complex function of time and location. Focusing on CO in the warm molecular layer, we find that only the most complete model (with chemistry and pebble evolution included) can reach depletion factors consistent with observations. In the absence of pressure traps, highly efficient planetesimal formation, or high cosmic-ray ionization rates, this model also predicts a resurgence of CO vapor interior to the CO ice-line. We show the impact of physical and chemical processes on the elemental (C/O) and (C/H) ratios (in the gas and ice phases), discuss the use of CO as a disk mass tracer, and, finally, connect our predicted pebble ice compositions to those of pristine planetesimals as found in the Cold Classical Kuiper Belt and debris disks.

Inflation of 430-parsec bipolar radio bubbles in the Galactic Centre by an energetic event.

The Galactic Centre contains a supermassive black hole with a mass of four million Suns1 within an environment that differs markedly from that of the Galactic disk. Although the black hole is essentially quiescent in the broader context of active galactic nuclei, X-ray observations have provided evidence for energetic outbursts from its surroundings2. Also, although the levels of star formation in the Galactic Centre have been approximately constant over the past few hundred million years, there is evidence of increased short-duration bursts3, strongly influenced by the interaction of the black hole with the enhanced gas density present within the ring-like central molecular zone4 at Galactic longitude |l|<0.7degrees and latitude |b|<0.2degrees. The inner 200-parsec region is characterized by large amounts of warm molecular gas5, a high cosmic-ray ionization rate6, unusual gas chemistry, enhanced synchrotron emission7,8, and a multitude of radio-emitting magnetized filaments9, the origin of which has not been established. Here we report radio imaging that reveals a bipolar bubble structure, with an overall span of 1degree by 3degrees (140parsecs×430parsecs), extending above and below the Galactic plane and apparently associated with the Galactic Centre. The structure is edge-brightened and bounded, with symmetry implying creation by an energetic event in the Galactic Centre. We estimate the age of the bubbles to be a few million years, with a total energy of 7×1052ergs. We postulate that the progenitor event was a major contributor to the increased cosmic-ray density in the Galactic Centre, and is in turn the principal source of the relativistic particles required to power the synchrotron emission of the radio filaments within and in the vicinity of the bubble cavities.

Complex cyanides as chemical clocks in hot cores

Context. In the high-mass star-forming region G35.20−0.74N, small scale (~800 AU) chemical segregation has been observed in which complex organic molecules containing the CN group are located in a small location (toward continuum peak B3) within an apparently coherently rotating structure. Aims. We aim to determine the physical origin of the large abundance difference (~4 orders of magnitude) in complex cyanides within G35.20−0.74 B, and we explore variations in age, gas/dust temperature, and gas density. Methods. We performed gas-grain astrochemical modeling experiments with exponentially increasing (coupled) gas and dust temperature rising from 10 to 500 K at constant H2 densities of 107 cm−3, 108 cm−3, and 109 cm−3. We tested the effect of varying the initial ice composition, cosmic-ray ionization rate (1.3 × 10−17 s−1, 1 × 10−16 s−1, and 6 × 10−16 s−1), warm-up time (over 50, 200, and 1000 kyr), and initial (10, 15, and 25 K) and final temperatures (300 and 500 K). Results. Varying the initial ice compositions within the observed and expected ranges does not noticeably affect the modeled abundances indicating that the chemical make-up of hot cores is determined in the warm-up stage. Complex cyanides vinyl and ethyl cyanide (CH2CHCN and C2H5CN, respectively) cannot be produced in abundances (vs. H2) greater than 5 ×10−10 for CH2CHCN and 2 ×10−10 for C2H5CN with a fast warm-up time (52 kyr), while the lower limit for the observed abundance of C2H5CN toward source B3 is 3.4 ×10−10. Complex cyanide abundances are reduced at higher initial temperatures and increased at higher cosmic-ray ionization rates. Reaction-diffusion competition is necessary to reproduce observed abundances of oxygen-bearing species in our model. Conclusions. Within the context of this model, reproducing the observed abundances toward G35.20−0.74 Core B3 requires a fast warm-up at a high cosmic-ray ionization rate (~1 × 10−16 s−1) at a high gas density (&gt;109 cm−3). The abundances observed at the other positions in G35.20-0.74N also require a fast warm-up but allow lower gas densities (~108 cm−3) and cosmic-ray ionization rates (~1 × 10−17 s−1). In general, we find that the abundance of ethyl cyanide in particular is maximized in models with a low initial temperature, a high cosmic-ray ionization rate, a long warm-up time (&gt;200 kyr), and a lower gas density (tested down to 107 cm−3). G35.20−0.74 source B3 only needs to be ~2000 years older than B1/B2 for the observed chemical difference to be present, which maintains the possibility that G35.20−0.74 B contains a Keplerian disk.

Modelling the ArH+ emission from the Crab nebula

Abstract We have performed combined photoionization and photodissociation region (PDR) modelling of a Crab nebula filament subjected to the synchrotron radiation from the central pulsar wind nebula, and to a high flux of charged particles; a greatly enhanced cosmic-ray ionization rate over the standard interstellar value, ζ0, is required to account for the lack of detected [C i] emission in published Herschel SPIRE FTS observations of the Crab nebula. The observed line surface brightness ratios of the OH+ and ArH+ transitions seen in the SPIRE FTS frequency range can only be explained with both a high cosmic-ray ionization rate and a reduced ArH+ dissociative recombination rate compared to that used by previous authors, although consistent with experimental upper limits. We find that the ArH+/OH+ line strengths and the observed H2 vibration–rotation emission can be reproduced by model filaments with nH = 2 × 104 cm−3, ζ = 107ζ0 and visual extinctions within the range found for dusty globules in the Crab nebula, although far-infrared emission from [O i] and [C ii] is higher than the observational constraints. Models with nH = 1900 cm−3 underpredict the H2 surface brightness, but agree with the ArH+ and OH+ surface brightnesses and predict [O i] and [C ii] line ratios consistent with observations. These models predict HeH+ rotational emission above detection thresholds, but consideration of the formation time-scale suggests that the abundance of this molecule in the Crab nebula should be lower than the equilibrium values obtained in our analysis.

A study of methanol and silicon monoxide production through episodic explosions of grain mantles in the Central Molecular Zone

Methanol (CH$_3$OH) is found to be abundant and widespread towards the Central Molecular Zone, the inner few hundred parsecs of our Galaxy. Its origin is, however, not fully understood. It was proposed that the high cosmic ray ionisation rate in this region could lead to a more efficient non-thermal desorption of this species formed on grain surfaces, but it would also mean that this species is destroyed in a relatively short timescale. In a first step, we run chemical models with a high cosmic ray ionisation rate and find that this scenario can only reproduce the lowest abundances of methanol derived in this region ($\sim$10$^{-9}$-10$^{-8}$). In a second step, we investigate another scenario based on episodic explosions of grain mantles. We find a good agreement between the predicted abundances of methanol and the observations. We find that the dominant route for the formation of methanol is through hydrogenation of CO on the grains followed by the desorption due to the grain mantle explosion. The cyclic aspect of this model can explain the widespread presence of methanol without requiring any additional mechanism. We also model silicon monoxide (SiO), another species detected in several molecular clouds of the Galactic Centre. An agreement is found with observations for a high depletion of Si (Si/H $\sim$ 10$^{-8}$) with respect to the solar abundance.

Discovery of a Perseus-like cloud in the early Universe

We present the discovery of a molecular cloud at zabs ≈ 2.5255 along the line of sight to the quasar SDSS J 000015.17+004833.3. We use a high-resolution spectrum obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph together with a deep multi-wavelength medium-resolution spectrum obtained with X-shooter (both on the Very Large Telescope) to perform a detailed analysis of the absorption lines from ionic, neutral atomic and molecular species in different excitation levels, as well as the broad-band dust extinction. We find that the absorber classifies as a Damped Lyman-α system (DLA) with log N(H i) (cm-2) = 20.8 ± 0.1. The DLA has super-solar metallicity (Z ~ 2.5 Z⊙, albeit to within a factor of two to three) with a depletion pattern typical of cold gas and an overall molecular fraction f = 2N(H2)/(2N(H2) + N(H i)) ~ 50%. This is the highest f-value observed to date in a high-z intervening system. Most of the molecular hydrogen arises from a clearly identified narrow (b ~ 0.7km s-1), cold component in which carbon monoxide molecules are also found, with log N(CO)≈ 15. With the help of the spectral synthesis code Cloudy, we study the chemical and physical conditions in the cold gas. We find that the line of sight probes the gas deep after the H i-to-H2 transition in a ~4−5 pc-size cloud with volumic density nH ~ 80 cm-3 and temperature of only 50 K. Our model suggests that the presence of small dust grains (down to about 0.001 μm) and high cosmic ray ionisation rate (ζH ~ a few times 10-15 s-1) are needed to explain the observed atomic and molecular abundances. The presence of small grains is also in agreement with the observed steep extinction curve that also features a 2175 Å bump. Interestingly, the chemical and physical properties of this cloud are very similar to what is seen in diffuse molecular regions of the nearby Perseus complex, despite the former being observed when the Universe was only 2.5 Gyr old. The high excitation temperature of CO rotational levels towards J0000+0048 betrays however the higher temperature of the cosmic microwave background. Using the derived physical conditions, we correct for a small contribution (0.3 K) of collisional excitation and obtain TCMB(z = 2.53) ≈ 9.6 K, in perfect agreement with the predicted adiabatic cooling of the Universe.

Mapping CS in starburst galaxies: Disentangling and characterising dense gas

Aims. We observe the dense gas tracer CS in two nearby starburst galaxies to determine how the conditions of the dense gas varies across the circumnuclear regions in starburst galaxies. Methods. Using the IRAM-30m telescope, we mapped the distribution of the CS(2-1) and CS(3-2) lines in the circumnuclear regions of the nearby starburst galaxies NGC 3079 and NGC 6946. We also detected the formaldehyde (H2CO) and methanol (CH3OH) in both galaxies. We marginally detect the isotopologue C34S. Results. We calculate column densities under LTE conditions for CS and CH3OH. Using the detections accumulated here to guide our inputs, we link a time and depth dependent chemical model with a molecular line radiative transfer model; we reproduce the observations, showing how conditions where CS is present are likely to vary away from the galactic centres. Conclusions. Using the rotational diagram method for CH3OH, we obtain a lower limit temperature of 14 K. In addition to this, by comparing the chemical and radiative transfer models to observations, we determine the properties of the dense gas as traced by CS (and CH3OH). We also estimate the quantity of the dense gas. We find that, provided that there are a between 10^5 and 10^6 dense cores in our beam, for both target galaxies, emission of CS from warm (T = 100 - 400 K), dense (n(H2) = 10^5-6 cm-3) cores, possibly with a high cosmic ray ionisation rate (zeta = 100 zeta0) best describes conditions for our central pointing. In NGC 6946, conditions are generally cooler and/or less dense further from the centre, whereas in NGC 3079, conditions are more uniform. The inclusion of shocks allows for more efficient CS formation, leading to an order of magnitude less dense gas being required to replicate observations in some cases.

Cosmic Rays, UV Photons, and Haze Formation in the Upper Atmospheres of Hot Jupiters

AbstractCosmic ray ionization has been found to be a dominant mechanism for the formation of ions in dense interstellar environments. Cosmic rays are further known to initiate the highly efficient ion-neutral chemistry within star forming regions. In this talk we explore the effect of both cosmic rays and UV photons on a model hot Jupiter atmosphere using a non-equlibrium chemical network that combines reactions from the UMIST Database for Astrochemistry, the KIDA database for interstellar and protoplanetary environments and three-body and combustion reactions from the NIST database and from various irradiated gas planet networks. The physical parameters for our model atmosphere are based on HD 189733 b (Effective Temperature of 1000 K, log g = 3.3, solar metallicity, at a distance 0.03 AU from a K dwarf). The active UV photochemistry high in our model hot Jupiter atmosphere tends to destroy these hydrocarbons, but on a time-scale sufficiently slow that PAH formation could already have taken place. In most cases, carbon-bearing species formed by cosmic rays are destroyed by UV photons (e.g. C2H2, C2H4, HC3N). Conversely, carbon-bearing species enhanced by an active photochemistry are depleted when cosmic ray ionization is significant (e.g. CN, HCN and CH4). Ammonia is an interesting exception to this trend, enhanced both by an active photochemistry and a high cosmic ray ionization rate.

74 MHz Nonthermal Emission from Molecular Clouds: Evidence for a Cosmic Ray Dominated Region at the Galactic Center

We present 74 MHz radio continuum observations of the Galactic center region. These measurements show nonthermal radio emission arising from molecular clouds that is unaffected by free–free absorption along the line of sight. We focus on one cloud, G0.13-0.13, representative of the population of molecular clouds that are spatially correlated with steep spectrum (α(327MHz)(74MHz) = 1.3 ± 0.3) nonthermal emission from the Galactic center region. This cloud lies adjacent to the nonthermal radio filaments of the Arc near l 0.2° and is a strong source of 74 MHz continuum, SiO (2-1), and Fe I Kα 6.4 keV line emission. This three-way correlation provides the most compelling evidence yet that relativistic electrons, here traced by 74 MHz emission, are physically associated with the G0.13-0.13 molecular cloud and that low-energy cosmic ray electrons are responsible for the Fe I Kα line emission. The high cosmic ray ionization rate 10(–1)3 s(–1) H(–1) is responsible for heating the molecular gas to high temperatures and allows the disturbed gas to maintain a high-velocity dispersion. Large velocity gradient (LVG) modeling of multitransition SiO observations of this cloud implies H2 densities 10(4–5) cm(–3) and high temperatures. The lower limit to the temperature of G0.13-0.13 is 100 K, whereas the upper limit is as high as 1000 K. Lastly, we used a time-dependent chemical model in which cosmic rays drive the chemistry of the gas to investigate for molecular line diagnostics of cosmic ray heating. When the cloud reaches chemical equilibrium, the abundance ratios of HCN/HNC and N2H+/HCO+ are consistent with measured values. In addition, significant abundance of SiO is predicted in the cosmic ray dominated region of the Galactic center. We discuss different possibilities to account for the origin of widespread SiO emission detected from Galactic center molecular clouds.

WATER ABSORPTION IN GALACTIC TRANSLUCENT CLOUDS: CONDITIONS AND HISTORY OF THE GAS DERIVED FROMHERSCHEL/HIFI PRISMAS OBSERVATIONS

We present Herschel/HIFI observations of nine transitions of \hho and \hheo towards six high-mass star-forming regions, obtained as part of the PRISMAS Key Program. Water vapor in translucent clouds is detected in absorption along every sightline. We derive the column density of \hho or \hheo for the lower energy level of each transition observed. The total water column density is about a few $10^{13} \rm{cm^{-2}}$. We find that the abundance of water relative to hydrogen nuclei is $1\times10^{-8}$ in agreement with models for oxygen chemistry with high cosmic ray ionization rates. Relative to \hh, the abundance of water is remarkably constant at $5\times10^{-8}$. The abundance of water in excited levels is at most 15%, implying that the excitation temperature $T_{ex}$ in the ground state transitions is below 10 K. The column densities derived from the two ortho ground state transitions indicates that $T_{ex}\simeq5$ K and that the density $n($\hh$)$ in the clouds is $\le10^4 \rm{cm^{-3}}$. For most clouds we derive a water ortho-to-para ratio consistent with the value of 3 expected in thermodynamic equilibrium in the high temperature limit. Two clouds with large column densities exhibit a ratio significantly below 3. This may argue that the history of water molecules includes a cold phase, either when the molecules were formed on cold grains, or when they later become at least partially thermalized with the cold gas ($\sim25$ K) in the shielded, low temperature regions of the clouds; evidently, they have not yet fully thermalized with the warmer ($\sim50$ K) translucent portions of the clouds.

SUPERNOVA-ENHANCED COSMIC-RAY IONIZATION AND INDUCED CHEMISTRY IN A MOLECULAR CLOUD OF W51C

Cosmic rays pervade the Galaxy and are thought to be accelerated in supernova shocks. The interaction of cosmic rays with dense interstellar matter has two important effects: 1) high energy (>1 GeV) protons produce {\gamma}-rays by {\pi}0-meson decay; 2) low energy (< 1 GeV) cosmic rays (protons and electrons) ionize the gas. We present here new observations towards a molecular cloud close to the W51C supernova remnant and associated with a recently discovered TeV {\gamma}-ray source. Our observations show that the cloud ionization degree is highly enhanced, implying a cosmic ray ionization rate ~ 10-15 s-1, i.e. 100 times larger than the standard value in molecular clouds. This is consistent with the idea that the cloud is irradiated by an enhanced flux of freshly accelerated low-energy cosmic rays. In addition, the observed high cosmic ray ionization rate leads to an instability in the chemistry of the cloud, which keeps the electron fraction high, ~ 10-5, in a large fraction (Av \geq 6mag) of the cloud and low, ~ 10-7, in the interior. The two states have been predicted in the literature as high- and low-ionization phases (HIP and LIP). This is the observational evidence of their simultaneous presence in a cloud.

Revised chemical models of ? Oph based on HST data

Hubble Space Telescope observations by Savage, Cardelli and Sofia (1992) and Cardelliet al. (1993) have led to improved gas phase abundances for many elements in the diffuse cloud towards the star ζ Oph. Most remarkably, it was found that oxygen is much more strongly depleted than previousCopernicus observations indicated. As a consequence, chemical models of the ζ Oph cloud are severely affected by the drop in the observed oxygen abundance by almost a factor of two; some previous model calculations for the ζ Oph cloud failed to reproduce-even approximately-the observed high CO column density. The model calculations for the ζ Oph cloud developed by Wagenblast (1992) in which the abundance of all observed neutral molecules could be reproduced have been revised and it is found that oxygen and nitrogen hydrides are required to be formed efficiently on the surface of grains; further, there are indications for a high cosmic ray ionization rate of the order 10−16 s−1.
