Barriers to the Effective Management of Herbicide-Resistant Weeds: Perspectives from Crop Advisors

This article presents the findings of a national survey of Certified Crop Advisors (CCAs), reporting on their attitudes and perspectives towards pesticide resistance issues. Specifically, our 2022 survey addresses CCAs' levels of concern, barriers to discussing resistance management with their customers, the role of retailers and manufacturers, customers' constraints to management, future needs, and effective management options. We find high levels of concern among CCAs, particularly related to herbicide resistance. Various barriers include customer's economic and time constraints, conflicting retailer recommendations, and management complexity. Changing producers' mindsets through firsthand experience and the cultivation of trusting relationships between customers and CCAs are highlighted as ways to encourage more effective pesticide resistance management going forward.

Does narrow row spacing suppress weeds and increase yields in corn and soybean? A meta-analysis

AbstractNarrow row spacing (<76 cm) could improve crop competitiveness, suppress weeds and might provide yield advantage. Many studies have been conducted to evaluate the impact of narrow row spacing; however, no quantitative synthesis of these studies exists. The objectives of this meta-analysis were to (1) quantify the overall effect of narrow row spacing (<76 cm) on weed density, biomass, control, weed seed production, and yield in corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] compared with 76-cm row spacing, and (2) assess the influence of agronomic management decisions (tillage type, weed management, herbicide application frequency and time) on effect of narrow row spacing on weed suppression and corn and soybean yield. We compiled 1,904 pair-wise observations from 35 studies conducted in 12 states in the United States during 1961 to 2018. Averaged across individual observations, narrow row spacing suppressed weed density by 34%, weed biomass by 55%, and weed seed production by 45%, while it improved weed control by 32% and crop yield by 11% compared with 76-cm row spacing. Narrow row spacing in soybean suppressed weed density by 42%, weed biomass by 71%, and increased crop yield by 12% compared with 76-cm row spacing. Although narrow row spacing had a nonsignificant effect on response variables in corn, the number of studies (n = 1 to 6) and observations (n = 1 to 59) addressing each response variable were limited. Tillage type (conventional and reduced) did not influence the response of weed density, control, and seed production in narrow row spacing; however, weed biomass and weed seed production were more greatly reduced with the sequential application of herbicides compared with a single application. Thus, narrow row spacing in soybean can be integrated with other options for management of herbicide-resistant weeds.

John Caseley 1935–2022: a Life with Weeds

Former Outlooks on Pest Management board member John Caseley is remembered for his significant contribution to weed science in a career spanning five decades which earned him the respect of his peers around the world. John passed away recently at the age of 87. John’s extensive publication list demonstrates his capacity for collaboration with scientists in the UK and around the world. His enthusiastic and extrovert character made him not only a welcome colleague but also a frequent speaker at meetings and conferences. He was a regular contributor to the annual Brighton Weed control conferences and presented at numerous international meetings including in USA, Israel, Australia and in Europe. His international reach was further enhanced by collaboration on publications that to this day remain essential sources of information including a 1994 United Nations published book on Weed Management for Developing Countries, co-edited with Ricardo Labrada and Chris Parker and a volume from 2000 on Prevention and Management of Herbicide Resistant Weeds in Rice co-authored by Bernal Valverde and Charlie Riches. The latter has been downloaded many thousands of times in both English and Spanish versions. He was always keen to encourage others and served for many years on the editorial board of the Outlooks on Pest Management Journal and committees of the Society of Chemical Industry. John’s qualities were especially appreciated by many postdoctoral and post-graduate students from overseas who benefitted from his wise council and mentoring and who went on to become distinguished weed scientists in their own countries.

Herbicide Resistance in Phalaris Species: A Review.

Weeds, such as Phalaris spp., can drastically reduce the yield of crops, and the evolution of resistance to herbicides has further exacerbated this issue. Thus far, 23 cases of herbicide resistance in 11 countries have been reported in Phalaris spp., including Phalaris minor Retz., Phalaris paradoxa L., and Phalaris brachystachys L., for photosystem II (PS-II), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), and acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. This paper will first review the cases of herbicide resistance reported in P. minor, P. paradoxa, and P. brachystachys. Then, the mechanisms of resistance in Phalaris spp. are discussed in detail. Finally, the fitness cost of herbicide resistance and the literature on the management of herbicide-resistant weeds from these species are reviewed.

​Challenges of Herbicide Resistant Weeds in Wheat in India and its Management: A Review

Agriculture is an important part of the India’s economy. India ranks first in net cropland area in the world with 179.8 mha which is 9.6% of global net cropland area and India’s agriculture sector makes up 16% of the country’s economy, while accounting for 49% of employment (FAOSTAT, 2020). The rice-wheat cropping system (RWCS) is extensive in the subtropical areas of the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India while maize-wheat is widespread in tropical, sub-tropical and warm temperate regions. In north India, rice is grown in the summer season (June/July to September/October) whereas wheat is grown in the winter season (October/November to February/March). The area under wheat in India was 30.59 mha with an annual production of 99.78 mt and average productivity of 3.22 t ha-1 (Anonymous, 2019). The weeds are accounting as a major factor in yield reduction of wheat. The mechanical weed control is not so much effective in controlling weeds in wheat because of narrow inter row spacing. Further, the manual weeding is not much feasible because of mimicry weeds like Phalaris minor which are very much similar to wheat during initial stages. Therefore, the role of herbicides cannot be neglected. But the continuous application of herbicides with same mode of action year by year has resulted in evolution of herbicide resistance in weed species. The management of herbicide resistant weeds in crop production is a major challenge. This review mainly focuses on the current status of herbicide resistant weeds in India associated with wheat along with their management strategies.

Image based thermal sensing for glyphosate resistant weed identification in greenhouse conditions

In mid-western states, studies have estimated that herbicide-resistant weed management has increased weed control costs by $20–$40 per acre. From 2019 to 2020, greenhouse research was conducted to investigate the canopy temperature response of waterhemp (Amaranthusrudis), kochia (Kochiascoparia), common ragweed (Ambrosiaartemisiifolia), horseweed (Conyzacanadensis),and Palmer amaranth (Amaranthuspalmeri),after glyphosate application to identify glyphosate resistance. In theseexperiments,thermal images were captured of randomized glyphosate-resistant and -susceptible collections of each weed species. The weed canopies' temperature values were extracted from the thermal images andsubmitted to statistical testing. Various classifiers were established to discriminatebetween resistant and susceptible biotypes.Results showed glyphosate-resistant horseweed was the only biotype under greenhouse conditions reliably classified with the resistance trait, 89% accuracy, using cooler temperature signatures than its susceptible counterpart as the discrimination characteristic. The unstable performance from thermal imagery further suggested canopy temperature data was not a reliable predictor of glyphosate resistance. Investigation of additional multispectral sensing technologies or analysis models should be evaluated for more reliable identification of glyphosate-resistant weed species.

An Overview of Rice Cultivation in Spain and the Management of Herbicide-Resistant Weeds

Spain is the second highest rice-producing country in the European Union, with approximately 105,000 ha used to grow this crop. The major rice-producing regions in Spain are Andalusia, Extremadura, Catalonia, and Valencia, followed by Aragon and Navarre. The main soil texture throughout Spanish rice areas is silty clay loam, with alkaline soils (pH > 7.5)—except in the Extremadura area (pH = 5.5–6)—and a low organic matter content. Water quality in terms of salinity is acceptable, although in some coastal rice areas salinity issues occasionally appear to be a determining factor for high yield achievement. According to a survey carried out on farmers and technicians, the most problematic weeds found in rice crops today in Spain are Echinochloa spp., Leptochloa spp., and Cyperus difformis. Most of the currently authorized herbicides can be classified according to two modes of action: ALS-inhibiting and ACCase-inhibiting. Repeated field applications of herbicides with the same mode of action have resulted in the selection of herbicide-resistant weeds. At present, resistance has been confirmed in different regions of Spain to ALS inhibitors in Echinochloa spp., Leptochloa spp., and Cyperus difformis, and to ACCase inhibitors in Echinochloa spp. and Leptochloa spp. The mechanism of resistance in these species is a mutation in the target site of these herbicides. Several mutations have been found in the ALS gene, both in Echinochloa spp. and Cyperus difformis, distributed in the different rice-growing regions considered in this work. ACCase gene mutations have been mainly found in Leptochloa spp. individuals from Extremadura and Valencia. These different mutations have resulted in different patterns of cross-resistance to ALS- and ACCase-inhibiting herbicides. It is likely that the repeated use of these two modes of action in rice will result in the evolution of more resistant weed populations. The possible availability of new herbicides with alternative modes of action in a short space of time seems very limited, suggesting the need for a more appropriate use of the available alternative strategies (crop rotation, dry sowing, manual weeding, etc.). This work presents a review of the main characteristics of rice cultivation in Spain, emphasizing the current problems in this crop and the management of herbicide-resistant weeds.

Increasing the value and efficiency of herbicide resistance surveys.

The scale of herbicide resistance within a cropping region can be estimated and monitored using surveys of weed populations. The current approach to herbicide resistance surveys is time-consuming, logistically challenging and costly. Here we review past and current approaches used in herbicide resistance surveys with the aims of (i) defining effective survey methodologies, (ii) highlighting opportunities for improving efficiencies through the use of new technologies and (iii) identifying the value of repeated region-wide herbicide resistance surveys. One of the most extensively surveyed areas of the world's cropping regions is the Australian grain production region, with >2900 fields randomly surveyed in each of three surveys conducted over the past 15 years. Consequently, recommended methodologies are based on what has been learned from the Australian experience. Traditional seedling-based herbicide screening assays remain the most reliable and widely applicable method for characterizing resistance in weed populations. The use of satellite or aerial imagery to plan collections and image analysis to rapidly quantify screening results could complement traditional resistance assays by increasing survey efficiency and sampling accuracy. Global management of herbicide-resistant weeds would benefit from repeated and standardized surveys that track herbicide resistance evolution within and across cropping regions. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Herbicide Resistance, Tillage, and Community Management in the Pacific Northwest

The use of glyphosate as a replacement for tillage has been credited with spurring the adoption of conservation tillage in the United States. With herbicide-resistant weeds becoming a significant agronomic problem, however, it is unclear whether conservation tillage gains are in danger of being reversed as farmers turn to tillage to manage weeds that herbicides can no longer kill. Using 2015 focus groups, a 2016 national survey, and an ongoing Community Herbicide Resistance Management Initiative in four communities of the Pacific Northwest we assess the following questions: (1) How do U.S. farmers view tillage as an option for controlling herbicide-resistant weeds, (2) Do attitudes towards and experience with herbicide-resistant increase farmers’ usage of tillage, and (3) Can community management provide an avenue for maintaining conservation tillage while also increasing effective management of herbicide-resistant weeds? We find that many farmers consider tillage to be an emergency fail-safe in managing weeds, that there is a complex relationship between herbicide resistance awareness, concern, and tillage use that can be partly explained by experience and dedication to conservation tillage, and finally that community management has the potential to provide the support and resources necessary to prevent a large-scale increase in tillage related to herbicide resistance management.

Herbicide resistance in the nursery crop production and landscape maintenance industries

AbstractWeed management is an important issue for nursery crop and Christmas tree producers, as well as for those maintaining turfgrass or ornamental species in landscape plantings. PRE and POST herbicides are important weed management tools for these industries. Reports of herbicide-resistant weeds increased from fewer than 100 cases in 1985 to nearly 500 cases globally in 2019, including ones found in turfgrass or ornamental systems. The evolution, persistence, and management of herbicide-resistant weeds are an ongoing educational process. We must keep our stakeholders aware of improved weed control technology and provide them information on resistant weeds. A symposium at the 2019 Weed Science Society of America meeting was conducted with presentations and discussions by invited speakers in relation to current research and potential management strategies for resistant weeds in turfgrass, landscape ornamental, and nursery crops. To prepare for the symposium, a survey was prepared for nursery producers and landscapers on the issues of herbicide-resistant weeds and offsite movement of herbicides used to control herbicide-resistant weeds. Overall, most respondents felt herbicide-resistant weeds are a serious problem and most had personally observed herbicide resistance on properties they maintain. Resistance to glyphosate was the herbicide cited by most respondents, followed by resistance to triazine herbicides. Most felt their weed-control costs had increased because of resistant weeds. Approximately 20% of respondents had their operation affected by drift of herbicides from nearby farm fields, with most reporting no damage from spray or vapor drift, but a few reported greater than 50% of the crop damaged.

Omics Potential in Herbicide-Resistant Weed Management.

The rapid development of omics technologies has drastically altered the way biologists conduct research. Basic plant biology and genomics have incorporated these technologies, while some challenges remain for use in applied biology. Weed science, on the whole, is still learning how to integrate omics technologies into the discipline; however, omics techniques are more frequently being implemented in new and creative ways to address basic questions in weed biology as well as the more practical questions of improving weed management. This has been especially true in the subdiscipline of herbicide resistance where important questions are the evolution and genetic basis of herbicide resistance. This review examines the advantages, challenges, potential solutions, and outlook for omics technologies in the discipline of weed science, with examples of how omics technologies will impact herbicide resistance studies and ultimately improve management of herbicide-resistant populations.

Emerging Challenges for Weed Management in Herbicide-Resistant Crops

Since weed management is such a critical component of agronomic crop production systems, herbicides are widely used to provide weed control to ensure that yields are maximized. In the last few years, herbicide-resistant (HR) crops, particularly those that are glyphosate-resistant, and more recently, those with dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) resistance are changing the way many growers manage weeds. However, past reliance on glyphosate and mistakes made in stewardship of the glyphosate-resistant cropping system have directly led to the current weed resistance problems that now occur in many agronomic cropping systems, and new technologies must be well-stewarded. New herbicide-resistant trait technologies in soybean, such as dicamba-, 2,4-D-, and isoxaflutole- ((5-cyclopropyl-4-isoxazolyl)[2-(methylsulfonyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]methanone) resistance, are being combined with glyphosate- and glufosinate-resistance traits to manage herbicide-resistant weed populations. In cropping systems with glyphosate-resistant weed species, these new trait options may provide effective weed management tools, although there may be increased risk of off-target movement and susceptible plant damage with the use of some of these technologies. The use of diverse weed management practices to reduce the selection pressure for herbicide-resistant weed evolution is essential to preserve the utility of new traits. The use of herbicides with differing sites of action (SOAs), ideally in combination as mixtures, but also in rotation as part of a weed management program may slow the evolution of resistance in some cases. Increased selection pressure from the effects of some herbicide mixtures may lead to more cases of metabolic herbicide resistance. The most effective long-term approach for weed resistance management is the use of Integrated Weed Management (IWM) which may build the ecological complexity of the cropping system. Given the challenges in management of herbicide-resistant weeds, IWM will likely play a critical role in enhancing future food security for a growing global population.

Modeling Population Dynamics of Kochia (Bassia scoparia) in Response to Diverse Weed Control Options

AbstractKochia [Bassia scoparia(L.) A. J. Scott] is a problematic weed species across the Great Plains, as it is spreading fast and has developed herbicide-resistant biotypes. It is imperative to understand key life-history stages that promote population expansion ofB. scopariaand control strategies that would provide effective control of these key stages, thereby reducing population growth. Diversifying weed control strategies has been widely recommended for the management of herbicide-resistant weeds. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to develop a simulation model to assess the population dynamics ofB. scopariaand to evaluate the effectiveness of diverse weed control strategies on long-term growth rates ofB. scopariapopulations. The model assumed the existence of a glyphosate-resistant (GR) biotype in theB. scopariapopulation, but at a very low proportion in a crop rotation that included glyphosate-tolerant corn (Zea maysL.) and soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr.]. The parameter estimates used in the model were obtained from various ecological and management studies onB. scoparia. Model simulations indicated that seedling recruitment and survival to seed production were more important than seedbank persistence forB. scopariapopulation growth rate. Results showed that a diversified management program, including glyphosate, could provide excellent control ofB. scopariapopulations and potentially eliminate already evolved GRB. scopariabiotypes within a given location. The most successful scenario was a diverse control strategy that included one or two preplant tillage operations followed by preplant or PRE application of herbicides with residual activities and POST application of glyphosate; this strategy reduced seedling recruitment, survival, and seed production during the growing season, with tremendous negative impacts on long-term population growth and resistance risk inB. scoparia.

Assessing Fitness Costs from a Herbicide-Resistance Management Perspective: A Review and Insight

AbstractIn recent years, herbicide resistance has attracted much attention as an increasingly urgent problem worldwide. Unfortunately, most of that effort was focused on confirmation of resistance and characterization of the mechanisms of resistance. For management purposes, knowledge about biology and ecology of the resistant weed phenotypes is critical. This includes fitness of the resistant biotypes compared with the corresponding wild biotypes. Accordingly, fitness has been the subject of many studies; however, lack of consensus on the concept of fitness resulted in poor experimental designs and misinterpretation of the ensuing data. In recent years, methodological protocols for conducting proper fitness studies have been proposed; however, we think these methods should be reconsidered from a herbicide-resistance management viewpoint. In addition, a discussion of the inherent challenges associated with fitness cost studies is pertinent. We believe that the methodological requirements for fitness studies of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes might differ from those applied in other scientific disciplines such as evolutionary ecology and genetics. Moreover, another important question is to what extent controlling genetic background is necessary when the aim of a fitness study is developing management practices for resistant biotypes. Among the methods available to control genetic background, we suggest two approaches (single population and pedigreed lines) as the most appropriate methods to detect differences between resistant (R) and susceptible (S) populations and to derive herbicide-resistant weed management programs. Based on these two methods, we suggest two new approaches that we named the “recurrent single population” and “recurrent pedigreed lines” methods. Importantly, whenever the aim of a fitness study is to develop optimal resistance management, we suggest selecting R and S plants within a single population and evaluating all fitness components from seed to seed instead of measuring changes in the frequency of R and S alleles through multigenerational fitness studies.

Drift of 2,4-D and dicamba applied to soybean at vegetative and reproductive growth stage

ABSTRACT: The introduction of dicamba and 2,4-D-resistant soybean will increase the use of auxin herbicides for management of herbicide-resistant weeds, increasing risk of drift in non-target crops. The field experiment was conducted in 2016/17 to evaluate injury, growth, yield, germination and seeds vigor of soybean effects to simulated drift of 2,4-D and dicamba applied to soybean at the V3 and R2 growth stages. To simulate drift, 2,4-D was applied at 0; 5.16; 10.4; 20.8 e 41.5g ae ha-1 and dicamba at: 0; 3.7; 7.4; 14.9 e 29.8g ae ha-1. The injury of the dicamba is greater than 2,4-D, and the V5 stage is more susceptible to both herbicides. The greatest reductions in soybean yield follow the drift of dicamba in R2 and 2,4-D in V5. The physiological quality seeds of the soybean is reduced by dicamba and 2,4-D drift at both the V5 and R2 stages of the soybean. Soybean is highly sensitive to low rates of 2,4-D and dicamba at the vegetative or reproductive growth stages. Dicamba causes greater negative effects than 2,4-D on soybean. The low rate of 2,4-D and dicamba reduce germination and vigor seed on soybean offspring.

A Statewide Survey of Stakeholders to Assess the Problem Weeds and Weed Management Practices in Nebraska

AbstractStakeholders were surveyed across Nebraska to identify the problem weeds and assess common weed management practices. A total of 425 responses were returned across four Nebraska extension districts (Northeast, Panhandle, Southeast, and West Central). Collectively, 61.2% of total farmed or scouted areas in Nebraska were under no-till production, and corn and soybean were the major crops (82.3% of total farmed or scouted area). Common waterhemp, horseweed, and kochia were the most problematic weeds statewide. Widespread occurrence of glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds such as common waterhemp, horseweed, kochia, and Palmer amaranth were a serious problem in GR crop production. Additionally, 60% of growers in Nebraska reported the presence of at least one GR weed species on their farms. The most commonly used preplant burndown herbicides were 2,4-D and glyphosate, followed by saflufenacil and dicamba. In Nebraska, 74% and 59% of corn and soybean growers, respectively, were using PRE herbicides; however, more than 80% of growers were using POST herbicides for in-crop weed management. Atrazine alone or in premix or tank mix with mesotrione,S-metolachlor, or acetochlor were the most widely applied PRE herbicides in corn and grain sorghum, whereas the most commonly used PRE herbicides in soybean were the inhibitors of acetolactate synthase (ALS) and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO). Glyphosate was the most frequent choice of the survey respondents as a POST herbicide in GR corn and soybean; 2,4-D was the most commonly used POST herbicide in grain sorghum and wheat. In Nebraska, only 5.2% of total crop area was planted with glufosinate-resistant crops. Most of the respondents (89%) were aware of the new multiple herbicide–resistant crops, and 80% of them listed physical drift and volatility of the auxinic herbicides as their primary concern. Forty-eight percent of survey respondents identified herbicide-resistant weed management as their primary research and extension priority.

Interference of allelopathic rice with penoxsulam-resistant barnyardgrass.

Despite increasing knowledge of allelopathic rice interference with barnyardgrass, relatively little is known about its action on herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass. The incidence of herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass is escalating in paddy fields. Knowledge of the interference of allelopathic rice with herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass and the potential mechanisms involved is warranted. Penoxsulam-resistant and -susceptible barnyardgrass biotypes were identified and segregated from a putative penoxsulam-resistant population occurring in paddy fields in China. Allelopathic rice inhibited the growth of barnyardgrass roots more than shoots, regardless of biotype. In particular, there was a stronger inhibition for resistant barnyardgrass than for susceptible barnyardgrass. Allelopathic rice significantly reduced total root length, total root area, maximum root amplitude and maximum root depth in barnyardgrass. Furthermore, the rice allelochemicals tricin and momilactone B inhibited the growth of both resistant and susceptible barnyardgrass. Compared with root contact, root segregation significantly increased inhibition of barnyardgrass with an increase in rice allelochemicals. Root exudates from barnyardgrass induced the production of rice allelochemicals, but the effect of susceptible barnyardgrass was much stronger than that of resistant barnyardgrass. Allelopathic rice can interfere with the growth of penoxsulam-resistant barnyardgrass through allelochemical-mediated root interactions. This type of allelopathic interference may provide a non-herbicidal alternative for herbicide-resistant weed management in paddy systems. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

A Wicked View

In a recent essay, Harker and coauthors stated that considering herbicide resistance as a wicked problem “without clear causes or solutions” ignores what weed scientists know about the biology and management of herbicide-resistant weeds. In this response, we argue that this misrepresents what is meant by “wicked” and that the wicked problem concept is valuable in understanding the multifaceted nature of herbicide resistance as a human-caused phenomenon.

Our top 10 herbicide‐resistant weed management practices

Although proactive or reactive herbicide-resistant weed management (HRWM) practices have been recommended to growers in different agroecoregions globally, there is a need to identify and prioritise those having the most impact in mitigating or managing herbicide selection pressure in the northern Great Plains of North America. Our perspective on this issue is based on collaborative research, extension activities and dialogue with growers or farming experience (cereal, oilseed and pulse crop production) during the past 30 years. We list our top 10 HRWM practices, concluding with the number 1 practice which is the foundation of the other nine practices: crop diversity. Although our top 10 HRWM practices have broad applicability across agroecoregions, their ranking may vary widely. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

Identifying Optimum Herbicide Mixtures to Manage and Avoid Fenoxaprop-p-Ethyl Resistant Phalaris minor in Wheat

ABSTRACT Use of herbicide mixtures has been advocated as most effective strategy for avoidance and management of herbicide resistant weeds. Effect of twelve selected treatments of four herbicides (clodinafop-propargil, metribuzin, pinoxaden and sulfosulfuron) two-way mixtures at different doses was investigated against fenoxaprop-p-ethyl resistant and susceptible populations of P. minor grown along the wheat plants. In repeated experiment, herbicides mixtures were applied at 3 to 4 leaf stage of P. minor under greenhouse conditions. All the herbicide mixtures were effective to control resistant as well as susceptible P. minor. Mixtures having 75% lethal dose of each mixture component provided best control against P. minor. Mixtures with 50% lethal dose of each herbicide also provided more than 80% control of P. minor. Surviving P. minor plants after exposure to herbicide mixtures showed reduced growth and seed production potential. No mixture combination produced phytotoxic effects on wheat plant up to 75% of lethal dose of each mixture component. Mixtures including clodinafop-propargil + metribuzin, pinoxaden + sulfosulfuron and pinoxaden + metribuzin at 100% dose of each mixture component produced minor phytotoxic effects on wheat plants and caused no reduction in terms of ultimate growth and grain yield. However, mixture of sulfosulfuron + clodinafop-propargil at 100% dose of each component was phytotoxic to wheat and caused significant reduction in term of growth and grain yield. So, farmers can use these mixtures even at 75% of recommended dose of mixture component to control susceptible and resistant P. minor in wheat.
