Mineral-based industries include the steel industry and heavy machinery industry. These industries also use minerals and metals as raw materials. Performance appraisal systems have become an important tool for companies to evaluate and maximize employee performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of performance appraisal systems. Performance appraisal has become increasingly part of a more strategic approach to integrating HR activities with company policies and is now regarded as a general term covering a range of activities through which companies attempt to evaluate their employees and develop their capabilities to improve performance and reward.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the impact of green supply chain management (Green SCM) on corporate performance in China's heavy machinery manufacturing. Research design, data, and methodology: This study employed a survey to collect data from key Chinese companies in heavy machinery manufacturing. The questionnaire was developed through a pilot study and in-depth interviews, and the survey was conducted from April to June 2024. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0. Results: Analysis revealed that internal environmental management, eco-design, and investment recovery inf luenced both environmental and operational performance positively. Eco-design had the greatest impact on environmental performance, while internal environmental management and investment recovery significantly contributed to operational performance. The total explained variance was 72.871%, indicating meaningful correlations between variables. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that Green SCM enables companies in the heavy machinery industry to fulfill their environmental responsibilities while improving operational efficiency. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening eco-design and internal environmental management practices for sustainable business development.

Development of diagnostic parameters for assessing the operation of a diesel engine on site

The paper aims to develop the on-site diagnostic parameters for assessing the operation of engines through the content (g/ton) of wear elements and contaminants in used oil. Here, it refers to heavy-machinery vehicles used in various industries of Mongolia such as agriculture, railway, building and road construction, mining etc. This study analyzed the results of measurements in the used oil samples from 20 diesel engines over a maintenance period of 5-6 years using spectral analysis. It focuses on three key goals: determining the content of wear elements and contaminants in used oil (g/ton), studying the intensity of engine wear during one period of maintenance, and using non-parametric statistical methods to develop the on-site diagnostic parameters based on the concentration of wear elements and contaminants in the samples of used oil.
 The diagnostic parameters determined as a result of this study can enable technicians to perform diesel engine maintenance based on the actual technical condition of the engine, rather than relying solely on the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, reduce the repair cost by addressing the aspects before serious breakdowns or delays occur and improve overall the engine performance, resulting in significant benefits for the transportation and heavy-machinery industries.

Life Cycle Assessment for Adaptive Remanufacturing: incorporating ecological considerations into the planning of maintenance activities – a case study in the German heavy machinery industry

Driven by the awareness of the global depletion of irrecoverable materials, cradle-to-cradle approaches like remanufacturing are enablers for increasing sustainability and resource efficiency in the manufacturing sector. In this context, the research project Adaptive Remanufacturing for Life Cycle Optimization of Capital Goods (ReLIFE) offers a holistic approach for a proactive, intelligent maintenance strategy with a focus on the life cycle extension of capital goods. As quantitative input to a decision-making model, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been used to present comparative results between a traditional maintenance strategy and an Adaptive Remanufacturing (AdR) strategy. In contrast to conventional LCA, the contribution of this paper is on the impacts incurred by specific maintenance measures. Therefore, the scope of assessment encompasses a life cycle on measure level to model and assess long-term ecological effects. For a decision-making model created in the project, the LCA results enable plant operators to select maintenance strategies that factor in long-term ecological implications.

Organizational Challenges of Development and Implementation of Virtual Reality Solution for Industrial Operation.

This research investigated the organizational challenges related to the development and implementation of virtual reality (VR) technology for operation in a conservative heavy machinery industry. The incorporation of a VR solution for heavy machinery equipment enhanced the safety and convenience of operation under dangerous work conditions. However, the development and implementation processes faced challenges. Furthermore, the adoption of the solution by users was perceived to be slower than anticipated. We aimed to explore the main challenges that the developer organization faced and how it also influenced user organizations. Due to the exploratory nature of the research, qualitative analysis was chosen, interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was applied. The themes and subthemes were identified and discussed. The results showed the existence of challenges related to technology maturity, managerial challenges regarding communication and support coordination, workload, and multiple stakeholder management. The findings emphasize the importance of attending to the existing and potential organizational challenges before and throughout technological innovation. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed, and a future research agenda is suggested.

Customer Loyalty and Powerful Brand in Heavy Machinery Industry

Market of the heavy machinery industry is growing fast. Customers have choices in purchasing new or used equipment or they can decide to rent or leas. Today's brand concept embraces all the things that a product or service offers, including how a product shapes consumers' behavior. The brand's special value is the perception that consumers have to a brand, which is perceived by many factors. This research is based on the Keller model, which includes the main four criteria’s: brand awareness, brand association, perceived quality, and brand loyalty.
 The most important reason that customers would changes suppliers is the lack of providing services and products based on customer needs. Through this case study the company, TECHNOCAT, seeks to understand the correlation of the brand and customer re-purchases, whether the value of the brand affects customer decisions in future purchases. The researcher conducted a survey study. The expert panels in the field validated a questionnaire; Cronbach’s alpha coefficient is 0.82 for reliability testing. Managers of the mining businesses and owners of machines are the target population. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 23.0 with descriptive statistics and multiple regression were utilized for data analysis, and AMOS was used for the structural equations. The finding presented results from 132 respondents. The study showed that there is a significant relationship between brand equity with an intention to buy again. Furthermore, certain factors; awareness, quality, loyalty, and association with the intention of re-buying, have significantly influence on repurchasing.

Life Prediction of Spur Gear Under Fully Reversed Loading Using Total Life Approach and Crack-Initiation Method in FEM

This paper focus on the comparative fatigue life prediction of spur gears based on finite element method under fully reversed load conditions. Gears being the vital components of any automobiles, power generation systems and in heavy machinery industries, need to have good fatigue properties such as fatigue life, endurance limit and fatigue strength for better life and performance of the equipment or machinery. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to simulate fully reversed loading conditions in the fatigue life prediction on general gear materials, SAE materials like ALSI4027, SAE1045-450-QT, SAED 5506 and SAE5160-825-QT. The finite element method (FEM) has been performed on the gear models to observe the distribution of stress and damage. A comparison was made on the fatigue life and the results were analyzed. Finally, conclusions were given.

Analysis of the Correlation Degree between Safety Condition and Influencing Factors of Heavy Machinery

It is important to research the relationship of safety condition and its influencing factors in heavy machinery industry. The influence level of factors on the death toll in ten thousand special equipment is analysed, which includes the main business income of heavy machinery, standard quantity, operators of special equipment, number of safety supervision organization and accident frequency. The correlation degree between the accident frequency and the death toll in ten thousand special equipment is 0.699, while the correlation degree for standard number, special equipment operators and safety supervision organization is 0.540, 0.514 and 0.512, respectively. The accident frequency has the most significant impact on the death toll in ten thousand special equipment, followed by the standard number, special equipment operators and safety supervision organization, while the main business income has the least impact. It shows that promoting local legislation and standards are conducive to improving the safety condition of heavy machinery in China.

Comparative Study between SiC Reinforced Al 64430 Metal Matrix Composites and RHA Reinforced Al 64430 Metal Matrix Composites

The excellent mechanical properties of Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites find applications in a variety of engineering applications in the automotive, aerospace and heavy machinery industries. This study aims at synthesis and characterization of Al 64430 reinforced with SiC particles and Rice Husk Ash (RHA). Rice husk ash is an agricultural waste which is produced in millions of tons worldwide. Aluminium was used as the base metal. With liquid metallurgy technique the metal matrix composites were prepared. The MMCs were synthesized with 3 % weight percentage RHA in Al metal matrix and the mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength and structural properties of MMCs were studied. The microstructure of the synthesized composites was examined by optical emission microscope and XRD. The Vicker’s microhardness test was performed on the composite specimens from base of the cast. The synthesized MMCs were found to have increased tensile strength, hardness, increased ultimate strength. The density of MMCs was observed to be decreased. This study indicates that RHA can be used as reinforcement material to synthesize light weight composites with increased hardness, tensile strength, Young’s modulus for various industrial applications.

Development and Application Practice of a 550MPa Grade Steel Plate in Purpose to Reduce Weight for Heavy Machinery Manufacture

To save energy, the heavy machinery industries are encountering the challenge of reducing the equipment weight. The paper introduced a 550 MPa grade steel plate to replace the traditional 345 MPa grade steel for heavy machinery manufacturing. The niobium and vanadium micro-alloyed steel plate is characterized as bainite microstructure with high toughness, improved welding performance, and good fatigue resistance. A comparison between the present 550 MPa grade steel plate and a Ni, Mo, Cu bainite steel was studied. The developed steel plate shows competitiveness for a high performance and low cost. The 15% of weight reduction is achieved in a 50 ton digger at a typical engineering machinery plant.

A Lean Production Framework for Malaysian Automotive and Heavy Machinery Industry

Lean production (LP) has become a potentially valuable way of securing competitive advantage. However, lean production practices have been subject to number of researches but little researches, if any, have directly addressed the relationship between type of industry and lean requirements practices. This study tries to provide a selective practices for conducting lean production in both Automotive and heavy machinery industries. It was aimed to abstain from introducing relatively unimportant lean practices and aid managers to implement lean production with lower cost. This study used a structured questionnaire derived from the literature and employing email surveys to collect responses form a group of 45 firms in Malaysia. The results of testing the hypotheses predicted that type of industry has a positive effect on lean requirements practices. Providing information about each industry, indicating lean practices in automotive industry start with quality control related practices and followed by planning and process related practices respectively. In contrast, heavy machinery industry commenced by process related practices while quality control practices have less priorities.

Fatigue Assessment of Cruciform Joints Welded with Different Methods

The advantages of the relatively new laser welding method are low welding distortions and high productivity, and it opens new opportunities for welding of steel structures in the automotive and heavy machinery industries. There is a need for understanding the fatigue strength and to develop fatigue design curves for laser welded joints. In this paper fatigue testing and weld quality of Hybrid Nd: YAG laser/MAG and MAG welded non‐load carrying cruciform joints is examined. Four batches were produced, tested and the results were compared. The local weld geometry of the cruciform welded joints was measured and analysed. The measured parameters were used to calculate the stress concentration factors by implementing FE‐models, in order to anticipate the influence of size of weld geometrical parameters on the stress concentrations. Residual stress measurement was carried out close to the toe region using the X‐ray diffraction method and weld defects (cold laps) in the cracked specimens was measured.

A framework for developing Web information systems plans: illustration with Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.

Internet technology holds many promises for enterprise information integration. Web information systems are applications that facilitate intra- and inter-firm processes and integration of myriad enterprise information systems. However, these applications require sound planning to really tap into the unique promises of the Internet and the Web technologies and add value to the enterprise. Heavy machinery industry, typified by Samsung Heavy Industries presents a good case in point. Static conventional home pages do not facilitate a manufacturer’s needs of information management in its core production and business functions. Instead, dynamic Web client capabilities must be connected with real-time enterprise databases in a cohesive plan to enhance integration of business processes. Planning of Web information systems needs a proactive review of the capabilities of the Internet technology to serve the particular needs of a firm and its customers. In this paper we describe the application of a generic Web information systems (WIS) planning framework to the construction equipment division of Samsung Heavy Industries of Korea to enhance its core business. The framework is rooted in economic principles that are shown to be the drivers of modern WIS. Further, the framework is applied to the task of developing a strategic plan of WIS for the marketing and service activities of the construction equipment division of the firm. The planning process is shown to cover most of the systems development life cycle from high level information goal setting to design of Internet-based new order managing and service part requisition sub-systems.

Some implementation experiences with just-in-time manufacturing

Abstract A case study on the implementation of a just-in-time lJITr production system by a Canadian manufacturer in the heavy machinery industry is presented. Many hurdles and difficulties were encountered during implementation and the way in which these problems were resolved is reported. While the successful implementation of a JIT system depends on a host of technical and human factors, this study suggests that the people involvement factor is the most crucial. It is seen that the key elements to securing people involvement are institution leadership, company-wide education and training and mutual understanding, trust and respect among employees. The moral of this study is that without employee involvement nothing will happen and no result will be achieved.

The Role of the Eastern Regions in the Economy of the USSR

The economic development of the eastern regions, including Siberia and the Far East, Kazakhstan and Central Asia, has been hampered by manpower shortages (except in Central Asia) and the high cost of construction. However the generally more favorable conditions for resource development are viewed as a sound basis for further industrialization of the Eastern regions, focusing on fossil fuels and electric power and on industries consuming large amounts of fuel and power (nonferrous and ferrous metals, some chemicals, and forest products). In view of the need for integrated regional development, primary resource-based industries should be supplemented by some manufacturing, particularly heavy machinery industries and pulp and paper. Savings in construction could be achieved by investing in territorial-production complexes with interrelated industries and common engineering and transport systems.
