The members the plantain family in the United States, notably Plantago lanceolata , fulfil all the requirements hay-fever plants. Despite this fact, their relationship to hay-fever has received only passing attention from American investigators. It is my purpose to record here the incidence hay-fever in the District Columbia and vicinity due to Plantago lanceolata , commonly known as rib grass or English plantain. The literature the subject may be briefly summarized: Hall 1 lists Plantago lanceolata among the hay-fever plants California. He adds that it is of first rank in Oregon and Washington, and that Chamberlain, Scheppegrell and Selfridge have reported positive reactions. Likewise, Watson and Kibler 2 enumerate the family Plantaginaceae among those plants capable producing hay-fever in the Southwest; whereas in Scheppegrell's 3 revised classification the plantains constitute one the five minor groups hay-fever plants.
