Kitoka : an Alternative of Traditional String Instrument Instruction

Abstract Kecapi is one of the nation's cultural products that is very popular in almost all communities in Indonesia. As a region that has various types of traditional harp (kecapi), South Sulawesi should be able to maintain the instrument in order to remain exist in the community. The government has made policies on local cultural arts in the form of curriculum by raising the local culture as one of the teaching materials that must be offered to the students. The process of traditional kecapi instruction in South Sulawesi is still using modern methods of music theory as a supporter of traditional kecapi instruction. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the development of kitoka as a form of innovation in order to answer the challenges related to the limitations of traditional string instruments especially in the learning process of music in South Sulawesi. In this research there are two types of data, i.e. primary data obtained from observation and direct interview with informants and secondary data as the supplement of the primary data obtained through literature study and documentation. The data that have been obtained through literature study, observation, interview and documentation are divided into categories and analyzed in order to be able to classify them and relate one class of data and the others. The result of this study is that the kitoka musical instrument is developed through innovation by looking at some weaknesses both in the procurement and the visual design of the traditional kecapi. This is certainly able to solve the problem of teaching kecapi in school without having to leave the traditional harp as a cultural product that must be preserved. Kitoka is part of a traditional harp developed on the basis of the needs of the people especially the popular community as it is today. Hydrodynamic Design of Tidal Current Turbine and the Effect of Solidity on Performance

Blade element momentum (BEM) flow model in conjunction with pattern search optimization algorithm embedded in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) tool HARP_Opt was used to design a horizontal axis tidal current turbine (HATCT). The numerical method was validated with the experimental data and a good agreement was achieved. The designed turbine has a 3 bladed rotor of 4 meters diameter and rated mechanical power of 20 kW. Performance metrics of the rotor for steady and uniform flow was simulated at flow speeds from 0.5-3.5 m/s. The turbine achieved its rated power at a tip speed ratio (TSR) 5.7 with a peak CP value of 0.47 and peak thrust of 16.7 kN-m. Additionally, a series of simulations were performed at TSR from 1-10 to obtain performance curve for the turbine at a design current velocity of 1.5 m/s. Effect of solidity on performance was quantified by varying the number of turbine blades. The value of CP increased by 1.5% with increasing the number of blades from 2 to 3. The value of CP further increased by only 0.2% with increase in number of blades from 3 to 4. The value of turbine thrust was minimally effected by increase in the number of blades. However, the value of thrust per blade increased with a reduction in number of blades. The increase in flap moment and thrust per blade with reduction in number of blades could have serious consequences for the structural integrity of the turbine.

Literary works of Iran are the mirror of ideas, artistry, and beliefs of people that have thrivingly and prosperously survived all risks and events from long ago. All Iran's literature, culture, and art is a manifestation of poetic and no poetic works of such famous writers and poets such as Firdausi, Manouchehri-e-Damghani, Khayyam, Aboureihan-e-Biroini, Sanaei, Attar, Rumi, Saadi, Hafiz, Saeb, Dehkhoda, Bahar, Nima Youshij, Sohrab-e-Sepehri,… who benefited from the culture of this country, created everlasting works with their own support of artistry, talent, and ability, and have left behind eternal and everlasting wealth. The profound and accurate study of these works, art from long ago and now, polishes up the soul and fertilizes the mind. Literature, a worthy and noble art, is shown beautifully when it combines with arts such as music, painting, calligraphy, and carving. Iranian music has always been along with poetry and singing. One of the manifestations of the poets and the authors influenced by musician is their use of elements which are directly or indirectly specific to the art of music. The poets and the authors have created imaginary poetic forms using these elements in their prose and poetry. Examples such as harp or lute, rah, rud, arghanun and reed and so one. In this article examples in the poems of the poets are discussed.

Absorption and Ocular Deposition of Dietary Lutein in Marine Mammals

Cataracts and ocular disease are common lesions of marine mammals in zoological collections. Lutein, an oxygenated carotenoid, may have therapeutic or prophylactic effects on ocular disorder. Therefore, this study examined the ability of marine mammals to absorb dietary lutein. Two preliminary trials examined lutein in two forms (beadlet or ester) in a small sample size of marine mammals representing pinnipeds and cetaceans. Lutein was fed daily in tablets providing 0.89-3.6 mg lutein/kg body weight(0.75) per day for 15 days to 2 years. A third study was conducted using lutein beadlet fed at 3.6 mg lutein/kg body weight(0.75) per day for 15-21 days. Blood was analyzed for lutein pre- and postsupplementation. In the preliminary trials, lutein beadlet was observed to result in greater blood lutein levels than lutein esters, and cetaceans had more noticeable responses than pinnipeds. In Study 3, serum lutein and zeaxanthin increased postsupplementation in beluga whales (P < 0.05), and serum lutein tended to increase postsupplementation in dolphins (P < 0.10), but little change was seen in serum lutein in pinnipeds or manatee. Opportunistic retinal samples demonstrated some detectable lutein in the retina of a dolphin and several harp seals. The lutein levels in dolphins after supplementation are similar to those reported in free-ranging animals. Ocular lutein in harp seals demonstrates that ocular deposition occurs despite low circulating lutein levels.

A little more than 10 years ago Andreas Manz and Harp Minhas launched the Lab on a Chip journal. Their adventurous initiative has developed into a very successful and high-ranked journal, now established as THE reference journal for lab on chip research, and clearly they, and we, all may be very proud of this achievement!
