AN ANALYSIS OF RACISM IN THE FILM OF THE GREEN MILE BY FRANK DARABONT

This research analyzes the forms of racism in the film The Green mile by Frank Darabont. The Green Mile tells about the experience of a warden who has a prisoner who comes from black people and has magical powers within him. This research shown the treatment of racist forms experienced by minorities. The purpose of this research is first, to find out the types of racism found in the movie. Second, to find out the resistance shown in the movie. This study uses a semiotic approach by Charles Sanders Pierce. The method used is descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data in this research. The data sources are taken from dialogues and scenes in the film The Green Mile by Frank Darabont. The finding in the research are first, kinds of racism that occur in the green mile films are internalized racism, interpersonal racism, and institutional racism. Second, the resistance that shown in The Green Mile films are closed resistance and open resistance.

Roll on two: Ambiguous energies in Stephen King’s The Shining, The Green Mile and Revival

This article positions King as both heir to the literary romantics and arbiter of contemporary issues as located specifically within his representation of energy, and electricity in particular. Writing both within and beyond horror, King both characterizes and creates energic structures that reflect both romantic aesthetic conceptualizations of electricity and modern concerns regarding its generation and fuel consumption more generally. By examining how The Shining (1977), The Green Mile (1996) and Revival (2014) present energy and also formally generate it, I will explore a little attended to element of King’s work and identify how energy functions ambiguously within these texts, materializing both horror and hope, bringing about both the conclusion and continuation of human life. I will also explore how the particular spaces this power is located within both channel and amplify it, King’s work here a surprising textual conduit for our fascination with, reliance on and fear of energy and the ongoing problems and potentialities alive within it.

Denver’s Green Mile: Marijuana gentrification as a process of urban change

ABSTRACT Does recreational marijuana legalization have the potential to transform urban spaces? Using Denver’s “Green Mile” as a case study, this study explores the potential for marijuana legalization to encourage the creation of thematic urban spaces. More specifically, the analysis contributes to understandings of gentrification by suggesting that commodified vice (i.e., marijuana) can function as a driver of gentrification, when accompanied by the evolution of societal (or gentrifier) perceptions. Utilizing a grounded theory method, we describe a specific type of commercial gentrification—marijuana gentrification—characterized by economic change and displacement due to the infusion of marijuana-related businesses and associated symbology into an area. Major elements of this process include: (1) commodification supported by the middle and upper classes that in turn serves as a magnet for other businesses frequented by the more affluent, (2) signs and symbols associated with a marijuana-themed environment that carry meanings appealing to particular urban gentrifiers, and (3) people attracted by, and with access to, the marijuana industry sharing the classic traits of gentrifiers. Explicating this process contributes to literature related to the impacts of marijuana legalization on urban spaces and adds to research on gentrification and thematic urban districts, by introducing legalized marijuana as a material foundation for both.

The Resisting Spectator and the Green Mile

Contemporary Hollywood filmmakers often look to classical Hollywood cinema for inspiration. In doing so, they also often coopt the codes of production of the earlier era of Hollywood filmmaking and reproduce its racist stereotypes of blacks. The memory film, The Green Mile, is an example of such a film. Reading the film as a resisting spectator, a term coined by the film scholar Manthia Diawara, I show how in making a return to classical Hollywood cinema and to the codes of production of the D.W. Griffith film, The Birth of a Nation, the film sacrifices the opportunity to tell a compelling story about black incarceration and criminal justice reform for a windfall at the box office.

The article attempts to show various ways of presenting spirituality in film. The paper contains a review of selected theories concerning the construct of spirituality in psychology. The main part of the article is comprised of the analysis of spirituality in three American films ( The Green Mile , The Straight Story and Into the Wild ), each offering a bit different understanding of this notion. The Green Mile refers to universal problems of existence and the spirituality is shown in the direct form of the interventions of supernatural power. The Straight Story speaks of spirituality by telling a “straight” story of an elderly man who fights with his flaws and past failures which allows him to redefine his own identity. Into the Wild , which is also based on a true story, presents a rebellion against the materialism and consumerism of the contemporary world, and a travel which takes place both in physical and spiritual dimensions. The article contains also the analysis of spiritual transformations of the particular film characters.

This paper is part of the doctoral thesis entitled “Critique of translation for film dubbing and subtitling from the perspective of discourse analysis. A study applied to Green Mile”, written by Ph.D. student Gabriela Saturnina Alanis Uresti, directed by Ph.D. Lidia Rodriguez. It is a qualitative and descriptive study where we contrasted The Green Mile - a 1999 Hollywood film, original in American English - with its translated versions: dubbed and subtitled into Spanish of Mexico. We start from the presupposition that in film translation, some references such as the ones related to sexual behaviors and offensive language are attenuated in order to be strategically polite. Specifically, we analyzed two mechanisms of attenuation: lexical selection whereby a euphemism is used, and discursive modalization. These mechanisms constitute strategies of linguistic, pragmatic and semiotic nature as they appear in original (OV), dubbed (DV) and subtitled (SV) versions; both in acoustic and visual channels. Therefore, we examine these occurrences on verbal, para-verbal, and non-verbal codes. The theoretical basis includes studies of attenuation, politeness, euphemisms, and linguistic taboos. This paper is based on methodological proposals by Gutierrez (2008), Najar (2009), Brown y Levinson (1987), Goffman (1967), Leech (1983), Fraser (1980) Haverkate (1994), Bravo (2001), Albelda (2010), (2005), Albelda y Briz (2010), Briz (2002a; 2002b), Allan y Burridge (2006), Chamizo (2008), Foucault (1987), Seiciuc (2010), Dubois (1969), Dubois et al (1973), and Rodriguez (2004).

Going the extra green mile: When others' actions fall short of their responsibility

The present research examined whether the environmental responsibility and actions attributed to large scale organizations, such as the government, can influence people's environmental efforts. In particular, we examined whether people increase or decrease their willingness to enact energy conservation behaviors (ECB) when there is a shortfall between others' actions and their responsibility. In Studies 1 and 2 we found that willingness to enact ECB was positively correlated with judgements about each of the organizations' eco-responsibility but not their eco-actions. Interestingly, each of the organizations' actions were perceived as falling short of their responsibility and this shortfall was positively associated with willingness to enact ECB. In Study 3, we found that manipulating respondents perceptions of government shortfall increased participants' willingness to enact ECB. Overall our findings provide support for social compensation theory as when others actions fall short of their responsibility people are prepared to “go the extra green mile”.

The “Green Mile”: crystallization ethnography in an emotive context

Purpose –The purpose of this paper is to discuss emotions within a highly emotive organizational setting through the use of crystallization. The authors contend that the expression of a researcher's positionality as a presence within their research is crucial in contexts where conventional research approaches are unable to capture the depth of the phenomenon under study. The paper argues that the presentation of research findings from highly emotional organizational context will benefit from a challenge to traditional ways of representing and communicating the researcher's experience. As an example of this, in this paper the authors examine the emotions involved in experiencing animal euthanasia in a work context.Design/methodology/approach– The paper draws ethnographic methods of fieldwork in an Australian animal shelter. The paper uses autoethnography and interview data.Findings– Euthanasia is one of the most tolling experiences for animal shelter workers. This paper reveals that through a creative representation this experience may come induce understanding of the emotive context. Furthermore, the employees adapt one or more story-lines to deal with the conflict of euthanasia.Originality/value– The strength of this paper is that it uses a novel approach to present findings in the form of crystallization. It also furthers insight on how organizational members explain their involvement in emotive work-tasks.

Racializing Redemption, Reproducing Racism: The Odyssey of Magical Negroes and White Saviors

AbstractRecent research on the intersection of race and media describes a trend of progressive, even antiracist, narratives that showcase close inter‐racial friendships and camaraderie on the silver screen. Films in which one character saves or helps another from some unholy or disastrous plight are common in films like The Green Mile (1999), Bruce Almighty (2003), Amistad (1997) and The Blind Side (2009). While these films present a stark change from the patently racist and on‐screen segregationist history of Hollywood cinema, these films often trade on racist meanings and expectations. Many of these films are what critics call “Magical Negro” or “White Savior” films – cinema in which implicit and explicit racial stereotypes are employed to structure the inter‐racial interactions where one character labors to redeem another. In comparing these two genres, this article provides an overview for how both cinematic forms reproduce racist messages by naturalizing the supposed cerebral rationality, work ethic, and paternalistic morality of select White characters while normalizing Black characters as primordially connected with nature, spiritually connected to the carnal, and possessive of exotic and magical powers. Together, these films subversively reaffirm the social order and relations of racial domination by reproducing centuries’ old understandings of racial difference.

Communities of Memory, Entanglements, and Claims of the Past on the Present: Reading Race Trauma through The Green Mile

This essay examines published reviews of Frank Darabont's 1999 film, The Green Mile, as a lens for reading the legacies of American race trauma upon contemporary sensibilities. Close analysis reveals three communities of memory, each defined through a distinct relationship to slavery, Jim Crow, and white supremacy. Through a close analysis of the relationship between each community's readings of the film and preferred meanings anchored in the film's semiotic structure, we locate the key interpretive strategy used by each of these communities: One strategy is structured through melancholia and guilt for the sins of white supremacy; another is structured through mourning and moving beyond victimization; and a third is structured through the “negative sublimity” of transcendent Christian salvation. We then explicate historic and ideological entanglements among these three communities of memory. Points of intersection reveal internal contradictions that call for critical self-reflexive conversation within each community, and resources for communities to live productively with each other in relation to the past.

From the Green Mile to the Yellow Brick Road: Using a Practical Model to Fill in the Social Studies Content Gaps

Since the inception of mandated testing in reading and mathematics, social studies instruction has been marginalized in elementary and middle schools. After the genesis of several state-mandated testing programs and nearly a decade after the launch of the No Child Left Behind legislation, the effects of limited K–8 social studies instruction are being recognized at the high school level, specifically in high school test score data. This article reveals the obstacles generated by marginalizing social studies in the elementary and middle schools and offers a model for helping teachers understand their role in offsetting the problems associated with early social studies marginalization. The article also provides a way to help teachers collaboratively fill the social studies content gaps.

The Power of Black Magic

Movies featuring a “magical” or spiritually gifted Black lead character have been released for many years, and the trend continues to grow in popularity. These Black characters, often referred to as “magical Negroes,” generally focus their abilities toward assisting their White lead counterparts. At first glance, casting the Black and White leads in this manner seems to provide examples of Black and White characters relating to each other in a constructive manner; however, a closer examination of these interactions suggests a reinvention of old Black stereotypes rather than authentic racial harmony. Using a textual analysis of eight selected films: the Matrix trilogy— The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), and The Matrix Revolutions (2003)— The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), The Green Mile (1999), Bringing Down the House (2003), Nurse Betty (2000), and Bruce Almighty (2003), this study formalizes a definition of the magical Negro and determines how these characterizations reinvent traditional Black stereotypes of mammy, jezebel, and Uncle Tom. This study reflects on the complex nature of the portrayal and acceptance of Blacks in contemporary times because these roles may commingle limited progress with traditionally racist stereotypes.

Holy Fools, Secular Saints, and Illiterate Saviors in American Literature and Popular Culture

In her article, Holy Fools, Secular Saints, and Illiterate Saviors in American Literature and Popular Culture, Dana Heller identifies and analyzes characteristics of the holy fool figure in American literature and culture. Heller defines the holy fool, or divine idiot, as a figure central to U.S. myths of nation. One encounters such figures in American literature as well as in American folklore, popular culture, and mass media. In American culture, the Divine Idiot is a hybrid form which grows out of the crossings of numerous literary and historical currents, both secular and non-secular. This unwieldy hybridity -the fact that Divine Idiots in American literature resonate across so many historical, national, cultural, and ethnic boundaries while retaining some loose correspondence with earlier Christian prototypes -has rendered them difficult to locate. However, this identification -or unveiling -is a crucial part of an idiot's social function and performance. In her analysis, Heller discusses writings by Flannery O'Connor, Jack Kerouac, Norman Mailer, and films such as The Green Mile and Forrest Gump, in an effort to define divine idiocy in American culture as a means of addressing historical contradictions in American society.
