Walt Whitman and the Nibelungenlied

Walt Whitman's interest in epic poetry bespoke his intention to become the bard of the masses. Whereas Shakespeare and Goethe had been epic poets of the aristocracy, Whitman envisaged himself as the poet of democracy. His work was to be the epic of the common man, and its style must be determinedly subjective. In 1856 Whitman wrote, “Leaves of Grass must be called not objective, but altogether subjective—‘I know’ runs through them as a perpetual refrain. Yet the great Greek poems, also the Teutonic poems, also Shakespeare and all the great masters have been objective, epic—they have all described characters, wars, heroes, etc.”

New Poems by George Herbert: The Cambridge Latin Gratulatory Anthology of 1613

On February 14, 1613, Frederick, the Elector Palatine, was married to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of James 1 of England. Shortly afterwards he and Prince Charles made a visit to Cambridge University. As on all such occasions, disputations were held, plays were acted, and congratulatory poems in Greek and Latin were offered. A contemporary account preserved in Gonville and Caius College (MS. 73, p. 232) records that after a speech the orator ‘presented the Princes with eyther of them a written book of verses, fairly bownd in vellum filletted and guilded, with crimson strings; that to the Prin: was gratulatorie, only that to the Palat: the former part gratulatori, the latter Epithalamia.’

Alvar Gomez de Castro's Verses from the Libro de buen amor

A LVAR G6mez de Castro (1515-80) was a foremost Spanish humanist of the Renaissance. Educated at Salamanca, he was a teacher in various schools in Spain before ending up as professor of Greek, Latin and Rhetoric in the University of Toledo. Besides his published works in Latin and Spanish, he left behind him a mass of miscellaneous material in manuscript form which has never been published and which now reposes in the National Library at Madrid. One volume of this miscellanea which I recently examined is an almost indescribable hodge-podge of notes, letters, poems in Spanish, Latin and Greek (some of his own, some extracts from ancient and modern authors), snatches of romances, inscriptions, comments on books ancient and modern, etc. One would judge from this volume that G6mez de Castro was a man of very broad and diversified interests. About forty years ago, F. J. Sanchez Cant6n while searching through the old archives in quest of archaeological and artistic material turned up in this volume some thirty verses of poetry which proved to be from Juan Ruiz's Libro de buen amor.1 Now one of the difficulties in establishing a good text of the Archpriest's work is the dearth of manuscript material, and these verses have never received the study they deserve concerning their relation to the extant manuscripts and their worth in correcting their readings. These verses appear on a single sheet of paper, recto and verso, with no name of author, no explanation for copying them, and with no relation to the pages which precede and follow. On the blank lower half of the verso there are some words in Latin having no connection with the verses of Juan Ruiz. These thirty lines of verse contain seven which appear in no known manuscript of the Libro. Furthermore the remaining twenty-three are not in the same order as they appear in the manuscripts of Salamanca and Gayoso (the Toledo manuscript lacks the folios containing these verses). Their order, following Ducamin's2 numbering, is as follows:

The Romance of Apollonius of Tyre

In addition to the witty story of Petronius, the brilliant work of one of the greatest writers of world literature, and the captivating romance of Apuleius 'The Golden Ass, a third story in Latin literature has been handed down to us, the story of Apollonius King of Tyre. Although from a literary point of view it is of less value than the two first mentioned tales, the Historia Apollonii regis Tyri has, throughout the ages, found many readers and imitators or adapters, and amongst the latter no less a writer than Shakespeare, for the second part of the drama Pericles prince of Tyre (1609) is ascribed to the great English poet. Already in the Gesta Romanorum, which originated in the first half of the fourteenth century, the story of Apollonius is related in number 153. Further, there exists an old French adaptation Appollin roy de Thire, three Italian prose adaptations of the fourteenth century, a poem Istoria d'Apollonio di Tiro in ottava rima, and a middle Greek poem ?????s?? p???pa???? ?p???????? t?? ?????. In English literature there existed an Anglo-Saxon translation of the tenth or eleventh century of which two large fragments have been preserved and were edited by Thorpe in 1834. Also John Gower, the friend and contemporary of Chaucer, dealt with the story of Apollonius in his Confessio Amantis, which he completed in 1392-1393. Gower's sources were the Pantheon, written in the fourteenth century by Gotfried of Viterbo, in which a poetical version is given of Apollonius, and the latin prose text of the Historia. Although Gower's adaptation has no particular poetic merit, it was so well-known in England that the previously-mentioned drama introduces Gower at the beginning of the first act: To sing a song that old was sung From ashes ancient Gower is come.
