The Impact of Different Filters on the Gravity Field Recovery Based on the GOCE Gradient Data

The electrostatic gravity gradiometer carried by the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite is affected by accelerometer noise and other factors; hence, the observation data present complex error characteristics in the low-frequency domain. The accuracy of the recovered gravity field will be directly affected by the design of the filters based on the error characteristics of the gradient data. In this study, the applicability of various filters to different errors in observation is evaluated, such as the 1/f error and the orbital frequency errors. The experimental results show that the cascade filter (DARMA), which is formed of a differential filter and an autoregressive moving average filter (ARMA) filter, has the best accuracy for the characteristic of the 1/f low-frequency error. The strategy of introducing empirical parameters can reduce the orbital frequency errors, whereas the application of a notch filter will worsen the final solution. Frequent orbit changes and other changes in the observed environment have little impact on the new version gradient data (the data product is coded 0202), while the influence cannot be ignored on the results of the old version data (the data product is coded 0103). The influence can be effectively minimized by shortening the length of the arc. By analyzing the above experimental findings, it can be concluded that the inversion accuracy can be effectively improved by choosing the appropriate filter combination and filter estimation frequency when solving the gravity field model based on the gradient data of the GOCE satellite. This is of reference significance for the updating of the existing models.

Sequential inversion of GOCE satellite gravity gradient data and terrestrial gravity data for the lithospheric density structure in the North China Craton

Abstract. The North China Craton (NCC) is one of the oldest cratons in the world. Currently, the destruction mechanism and geodynamics of the NCC remain controversial. All of the proposed views regarding the issues involve studying the internal density structure of the NCC lithosphere. Gravity field data are among the most important data in regard to investigating the lithospheric density structure, and gravity gradient data and gravity data each possess their own advantages. Given the different observational plane heights between the on-orbit GOCE (Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer) satellite gravity gradient and terrestrial gravity and the effects of the initial density model on the inversion results, sequential inversion of the gravity gradient and gravity are divided into two integrated processes. By using the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) inversion algorithm, the density data are calculated using the preprocessed corrected gravity anomaly data. Then, the newly obtained high-resolution density data are used as the initial density model, which can serve as constraints for the subsequent gravity gradient inversion. Several essential corrections are applied to the four gravity gradient tensors (Txx, Txz, Tyy, Tzz) of the GOCE satellite, after which the corrected gravity gradient anomalies (T′xx, T′xz, T′yy, T′zz) are used as observations. The lithospheric density distribution result within the depth range of 0–180 km in the NCC is obtained. This study clearly illustrates that GOCE data are helpful in understanding the geological settings and tectonic structures in the NCC with regional scale. The inversion results show that in the crust the eastern NCC is affected by lithospheric thinning with obvious local features. In the mantle, the presented obvious negative-density areas are mainly affected by the high-heat-flux environment. In the eastern NCC, the density anomaly in the Bohai Bay area is mostly attributed to the extension of the Tancheng–Lujiang major fault at the eastern boundary. In the western NCC, the crustal density anomaly distribution of the Qilian block is consistent with the northwest–southeast strike of the surface fault belt, whereas such an anomaly distribution experiences a clockwise rotation to a nearly north–south direction upon entering the mantle.

Gravity aspects from recent Earth gravity model EIGEN 6C4 for geoscience and archaeology in Sahara, Egypt

A new method to detect paleolakes via their gravity signal is presented (here with implications for geoscience and archaeology). The gravity aspects or descriptors (gravity anomalies/disturbances, second radial derivatives, strike angles and virtual deformations) were applied. They were computed from the gravity field model EIGEN 6C4 (European Improved Gravity model of the Earth by New techniques). The model consists of the best now available satellite and terrestrial data, including gradiometry from the GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) satellite mission. EIGEN 6C4 has the ground resolution ~10 km. From archaeological sources, the positions of archaeological sites of the Holocene occupations between 8500 and 5300 BCE (8.5–5.3 ky BC) in the Eastern Sahara, Western Desert, Egypt were taken. They were correlated with the features found from the gravity data; the correlation is good, assuming that the sites were mostly at paleolake borders or at rivers. Based on this finding, we suggest position, extent and shape of paleolake(s). We also reconsider the origin of Libyan Desert glass in the Great Sand Sea and support hypothesis about an older impact structure created there, repeatedly filled by water, which might be a part of some of the possible paleolake(s).

Thermospheric Density Cells at High Latitudes as Observed by GOCE Satellite: Preliminary Results

AbstractThis study provides a climatological view of density cell structures at high latitudes in the lower thermosphere, using neutral mass density at 270 km derived from Gravity field and steady‐state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite. Three types of the density cells named isolated low, isolated high, and wavy density cells are analyzed. Our results revealed that the density cell structures generally occur in the Northern Hemisphere and the local summer, but they are less frequently observed in the Southern Hemisphere. The low density cell tends to have greater occurrence in the dawn side than in other sampled local times, while the high and wavy density cells occur more frequently in the morning side in terms of the GOCE trajectory. Moreover, the characteristics of density cell structures, including the central locations, horizontal scales, and relative magnitudes, strongly depend on the type of the density cell structure. These results can serve as a baseline to further validate the theoretical models and also to improve our understanding of the density variability of the lower thermosphere at high latitudes.

Assessment of chosen GRACE-related gravity models based on the GOCE satellite precise science orbit

Eight selected geopotential models obtained through the International Center for Global Earth Models were used in the dynamic orbit determination process of the satellite of the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission. For the estimation of various GOCE orbital arc variants, the following gravity models were taken into account: HUST-GRACE2016S, ITU_GRACE16, ITSG-GRACE2014S, ITSG-GRACE2014K, TONGJI-GRACE01, EIGEN-51C, EIGEN5S, EGM2008. The official kinematic and reduced-dynamic precise science orbit (PSO) of the GOCE satellite received via the European Space Agency was adopted as the reference orbit. Cartesian coordinates of the GOCE satellite in this orbit were treated as pseudo-observations in the estimation process using the classical least-squares method. The estimated orbital arcs were fitted to the corresponding arcs of the reference orbit. This allowed the values of 3D root-mean-square (RMS) of the distance between the estimated and reference arcs to be computed. The averages for these 3D RMS values, computed for ten and fifty orbital arcs, made it possible to compare the orbital performance of selected gravity models. Additionally, the fit to both types of the GOCE PSO, i.e., the kinematic orbit and the reduced-dynamic orbit made it possible to compare their quality. Investigation of the gravity model performance was also the opportunity to describe the effectiveness of dynamic orbit determination solutions, depending on the estimated arc lengths, type of reference orbit and the use (or not) of the background models.

Gravity Field Model Determination Based on GOCE Satellite Point-Wise Accelerations Estimated from Onboard Carrier Phase Observations

GPS-based, satellite-to-satellite tracking observations have been extensively used to elaborate the long-scale features of the Earth’s gravity field from dedicated satellite gravity missions. We proposed compiling a satellite gravity field model from Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite accelerations directly estimated from the onboard GPS data using the point-wise acceleration approach, known as the carrier phase differentiation method. First, we composed the phase accelerations from the onboard carrier phase observations based on the sixth-order seven-point differentiator, which can eliminate the carrier phase ambiguity for Low Earth Orbiter (LEO). Next, the three-dimensional (3D) accelerations of the GOCE satellite were estimated from the derived phase accelerations as well as GPS satellite ephemeris and precise clock products. Finally, a global gravity field model up to the degree and order (d/o) 130 was compiled from the 71 days and nearly 2.5 years of 3D satellite accelerations. We also recovered three gravity field models up to d/o 130 from the accelerations derived by differentiating the kinematic orbits of European Space Agency (ESA), Graz, and School of Geodesy and Geomatics (SGG), which was the orbit differentiation method. We analyzed the accuracies of the derived accelerations and the recovered gravity field models based on the carrier phase differentiation method and orbit differentiation method in time, frequency, and spatial domain. The results showed that the carrier phase derived acceleration observations had better accuracy than those derived from kinematic orbits. The accuracy of the recovered gravity field model based on the carrier phase differentiation method using 2.5 years observations was higher than that of the orbit differentiation solutions for degrees greater than 70, and worse than Graz-orbit solution for degrees less than 70. The cumulative geoid height errors of carrier phase, ESA-orbit, and Graz-orbit solutions up to degree and order 130 were 17.70cm, 21.43 cm, and 22.11 cm, respectively.

Elastic Thickness Determination from on-orbit GOCE Data and CRUST1.0

Elastic thickness (Te) is a parameter representing the lithospheric strength with respect to the loading. Those places, having large values of elastic thickness, flexes less. In this paper, the on-orbit measured gravitational gradients of the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission are used for determining the elastic thickness over Africa. A forward computational method is developed based on the Vening Meinesz-Moritz (VMM) and flexural theories of isostasy to find a mathematical relation between the second-order derivative of the Earth’s gravity field measured by the GOCE satellite and mechanical properties of the lithosphere. The loading of topography and bathymetry, sediments and crystalline masses are computed from CRUST1.0, in addition to estimates of laterally-variable density of the upper mantle, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio. The second-order radial derivatives of the gravitational potential are synthesised from the crustal model and different a priori values of elastic thickness to find which one matches the GOCE on-orbit gradient. This method is developed in terms of spherical harmonics and performed at any point along the GOCE orbit without using any planar approximation. Our map of Te over Africa shows that the intra-continental hotspots and volcanoes, such as Ahaggar, Tibesti, Darfur, Cameroon volcanic line and Libya are connected by corridors of low Te. The high values of Te are mainly associated with the cratonic areas of Congo, Chad and the Western African basin.

Characteristics of GOCE orbits based on Satellite Laser Ranging

The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) was the first European Space Agency’s (ESA) Earth Explorer core mission. Through its extremely low, about 260 km above the Earth, circular, sun-synchronous orbit, the satellite gained high spatial resolution and accuracy gravity gradient, and ocean circulation data. Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, mounted on the spacecraft, allowed the determination of reduced-dynamic and kinematic GOCE orbits, whereas Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA) dedicated to Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) allowed an independent validation of GPS-derived orbits. In this paper, residuals between different GPS-based orbit types and SLR observations are used to investigate the sensitivity and the influence of solar, geomagnetic, and ionospheric activities on the quality of kinematic and reduced-dynamic GOCE orbits. We also analyze the quality of data provided by individual SLR sites, by detecting time biases using ascending and descending sun-synchronous GOCE orbit passes, and the residual analysis of the measurement characteristics, i.e., the dependency of SLR residuals as a function of nadir and horizontal angles. Results show a substantial vulnerability of kinematic orbit solutions to the solar F10.7 index and the ionospheric activity measured by the variations of the Total Electron Content (TEC) values. The sensitivity of kinematic orbits to the three-hour-range KP index is rather minor. The reduced-dynamic orbits are almost insensitive to indices describing ionospheric, solar, and geomagnetic activities. The investigation of individual SLR sites shows that some of them are affected by time bias errors, whereas other demonstrate systematics, such as a dependency between observation residuals and the satellite nadir angle or the horizontal azimuth angle from the SLR station to the direction of the satellite.

Resolution test of GOCE satellite data applied to density anomalies at crustal and upper mantle levels.

The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite mission was devised by the European Space Agency to study the Earth’s gravity field with an unprecedented accuracy using gravity gradient data. The goal of this study is to analyze the resolution in terms of size, burial depth and density contrast of anomalous bodies related to geological structures that can be identified from GOCE data. A parametric study is performed by calculating the gravity gradients associated with rectangular prisms with fixed aspect ratio of 9:3:1 and varying the size, burial depth, and density contrast, selecting those structures showing amplitudes and wavelength variations comparable to the accuracy of GOCE data. Results show that the minimum size for crustal anomalies to be resolved for the vertical component of the gravity gradient is 22.5x7.5x2.5km for a Δρ=500kg/m 3 , burial depth of 0km, and at computation height of 255km. To generate a sufficient signal in amplitude and wavelength in all the components, the size of the anomalous body is 270x90x30km. For a body with Δρ=50kg/m 3 and 0km burial depth a minimum size of 41.4x13.8x4.6km is required for the vertical component at a computation height of 255km. In addition, the application to the 3D case of a passive continental margin which broadly resembles the crustal structure of the NW-Iberia shows that the signal of all gravity gradient components is dominated by the crustal thinning associated with the passive continental margins and the corresponding isostatic response.

Seasonal variations of thermospheric mass density at dawn/dusk from GOCE observations

Abstract. Thermospheric mass densities from the GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) satellite for Sun-synchronous orbits between 83.5∘ S and 83.5∘ N, normalized to 270 km during 2009–2013, have been used to develop an empirical mass density model at dawn/dusk local solar time (LST) sectors based on the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) method. The main results of this study are that (1) the dawn densities peak in the polar regions, but the dusk densities maximize in the equatorial regions; (2) the relative seasonal variations to the annual mean have similar patterns across all latitudes regardless of solar activity conditions; (3) the seasonal density variations show obvious hemispheric asymmetry, with large amplitudes in the Southern Hemisphere; (4) both amplitude and phase of the seasonal variations have strong latitudinal and solar activity dependences, with high amplitude for the annual variation at higher latitudes and semiannual variation at lower latitudes; (5) the annual asymmetry and effect of the Sun–Earth distance vary with latitude and solar activity. Exploring the Recovery Lakes region and interior Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, with airborne gravity, magnetic and radar measurements

AbstractLong-range airborne geophysical measurements were carried out in the ICEGRAV campaigns, covering hitherto unexplored parts of interior East Antarctica and part of the Antarctic Peninsula. The airborne surveys provided a regional coverage of gravity, magnetic and ice-penetrating radar measurements for major Dronning Maud Land ice stream systems, from the grounding lines up to the Recovery Lakes drainage basin, and filled in major data voids in Antarctic data compilations, such as AntGP for gravity data, ADMAP for magnetic data and BEDMAP2 for ice thickness data and the sub-ice topography. We present the first maps of gravity, magnetic and ice thickness data and bedrock topography for the region and show examples of bedrock topography and basal reflectivity patterns. The 2013 Recovery Lakes campaign was carried out with a British Antarctic Survey Twin Otter aircraft operating from the Halley and Belgrano II stations, as well as a remote field camp located at the Recovery subglacial Lake B site. Gravity measurements were the primary driver for the survey, with two airborne gravimeters (Lacoste and Romberg and Chekan-AM) providing measurements at an accuracy level of around 2 mGal r.m.s., supplementing GOCE (Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer) satellite data and confirming an excellent sub-milligal agreement between satellite and airborne data at longer wavelengths.

Surface velocity estimates of the North Indian Ocean from satellite gravity and altimeter missions

ABSTRACTThe circulation in the North Indian Ocean (NIO) is one of the most complex systems compared with other regions of global oceans, mostly due to its interactions with the monsoon winds. In recent years, our ability to measure the ocean’s mean dynamic topography (MDT) from space has improved immensely with the availability of satellite gravity measurements from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) missions. The present study uses data from GOCE and GRACE satellite gravity missions together with altimeter data in retrieving the geoid, satellite-only MDT, and surface velocities in the NIO. The study estimates geoid heights of the NIO from all five releases of the direct approach and the time-wise GOCE gravity data. The formal error associated with geoid heights at different resolutions is found to be the lowest for the latest release of direct approach GOCE data. In addition, a new satellite-only MDT is estimated from the direct approach GOCE geoid and the CNES_CLS11 mean sea surface. This MDT corrected to a 20-year time reference is used together with the newly reprocessed sea level anomaly data to estimate absolute dynamic topography and surface geostrophic velocities in the NIO. The total surface velocities computed from the Ekman and geostrophic velocity fields reproduce all major surface currents in the NIO, along with their seasonality. Furthermore, total surface velocity estimates computed here are validated using surface drifters and are found to be highly comparable (difference within ± 10 cm s–1) with more than 170,000 individual surface drifter observations. Finally, the total velocities estimated here are used to examine the variability of the East India Coastal Current.

Comparison of Selected Geopotential Models in Terms of the GOCE Orbit Determination Using Simulated GPS Observations

This work contains a comparative study of the performance of six geopotential models in an orbit estimation process of the satellite of the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission. For testing, such models as ULUX_CHAMP2013S, ITG-GRACE 2010S, EIGEN-51C, EIGEN5S, EGM2008, EGM96, were adopted. Different sets of pseudo-range simulations along reference GOCE satellite orbital arcs were obtained using real orbits of the Global Positioning System satellites. These sets were the basic observation data used in the adjustment. The centimeter-accuracy Precise Science Orbit (PSO) for the GOCE satellite provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) was adopted as the GOCE reference orbit. Comparing various variants of the orbital solutions, the relative accuracy of geopotential models in an orbital aspect is determined. Full geopotential models were used in the adjustment process. The solutions were also determined taking into account truncated geopotential models. In such case, an accuracy of the solutions was slightly enhanced. Different arc lengths were taken for the computation.

Medium‐scale gravity wave activity in the thermosphere inferred from GOCE data

AbstractThis study is focused on the effect of solar flux conditions on the dynamics of gravity waves (GWs) in the thermosphere. Air density and crosswind in situ estimates from the Gravity Field and Steady‐State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) accelerometers are analyzed for the whole mission duration. The analysis is performed in the Fourier spectral domain averaging spectral results over periods of 2 months close to solstices. A new GW marker (called ) is introduced here to characterize GWs activity under low, medium, and high solar flux conditions, showing a clear solar damping effect on GW activity. Most GW signal is found in a spectral range above 8 mHz in GOCE data, meaning a maximum horizontal wavelength of around 1000 km. The level of GW activity at GOCE altitude is strongly decreasing with increasing solar flux. Furthermore, a shift in the dominant frequency with solar flux conditions has been noted, leading to larger horizontal wavelengths (from 200 to 500 km) during high solar flux conditions. The correlation between air density variability and GW marker allows to identify most of the large‐amplitude perturbations below 67° latitudes as due to GWs. The influence of correlated error sources, between air density and crosswinds, is discussed. Consistency of the spectral domain results is verified in the time domain with a global mapping of high‐frequency air density perturbations along the GOCE orbit. This analysis shows a clear dependence with geomagnetic latitude with strong perturbations at magnetic poles and an extension to lower latitudes favored by low solar activity conditions. These results are consistent with previous Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) data analysis and with general circulation models.

Application of Gravity Gradients in the Process of GOCE Orbit Determination

The possibility of improving the Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission satellite orbit using gravity gradient observations was investigated. The orbit improvement is performed by a dedicated software package, called the Orbital Computation System (OCS), which is based on the classical least squares method. The corrections to the initial satellite state vector components are estimated in an iterative process, using dynamic models describing gravitational perturbations. An important component implemented in the OCS package is the 8th order Cowell numerical integration procedure, which directly generates the satellite orbit. Taking into account the real and simulated GOCE gravity gradients, different variants of the solution of the orbit improvement process were obtained. The improved orbits were compared to the GOCE reference orbits (Precise Science Orbits for the GOCE satellite provided by the European Space Agency) using the root mean squares (RMS) of the differences between the satellite positions in these orbits. The comparison between the improved orbits and the reference orbits was performed with respect to the inertial reference frame (IRF) at J2000.0 epoch. The RMS values for the solutions based on the real gravity gradient measurements are at a level of hundreds of kilometers and more. This means that orbit improvement using the real gravity gradients is ineffective. However, all solutions using simulated gravity gradients have RMS values below the threshold determined by the RMS values for the computed orbits (without the improvement). The most promising results were achieved when short orbital arcs with lengths up to tens of minutes were improved. For these short arcs, the RMS values reach the level of centimeters, which is close to the accuracy of the Precise Science Orbit for the GOCE satellite. Additional research has provided requirements for efficient orbit improvement in terms of the accuracy and spectral content of the measured gravity gradients.

Distributed fault slip model for the 2011 Tohoku‐Oki earthquake from GNSS and GRACE/GOCE satellite gravimetry

AbstractThe Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission (launched 2002) and the Gravity Field and Steady‐State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission (March 2009 to November 2013) collected spaceborne gravity data for the preseismic and postseismic periods of the 2011 Tohoku‐Oki earthquake. In addition, the dense Japan GeoNet Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) network measured with approximately 1050 stations the coseismic and postseismic surface displacements. We use a novel combination of GNSS, GRACE, and GOCE observations for a distributed fault slip model addressing the issues with gravimetric and geometric change over consistent time windows. Our model integrates the coseismic and postseismic effects as we include GOCE observations averaged over a 2 year interval, but their inclusion reveals the gravity change with unprecedented spatial accuracy. The gravity gradient grid, evaluated at GOCE orbit height of 265 km, has an estimated formal error of 0.20 mE which provides sensitivity to the mainly coseismic and integrated postseismic‐induced gravity gradient signal of −1.03 mE. We show that an increased resolution of the gravity change provides valuable information, with GOCE gravity gradient observations sensitive to a more focused slip distribution in contrast to the filtered GRACE equivalent. The 2 year averaging window of the observations makes it important to incorporate estimates of the variance/covariance of unmodeled processes in the inversion. The GNSS and GRACE/GOCE combined model shows a slip pattern with 20 m peak slip at the trench. The total gravity change (≈200 μGal) and the spatial mapping accuracy would have been considerably lower by omitting the GOCE‐derived fine‐scale gravity field information.

How can GOCE and TerraSAR-X contribute to the topside ionosphere and plasmasphere research?

In this study we analyze concurrent observations derived from two low-Earth orbit satellite missions—the GOCE (Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer) satellite with unprecedented low orbit of 250 km and the TerraSAR-X satellite with orbit altitude of 515 km. The science payloads of both satellites have no instruments for ionospheric research, but they include a dual-frequency GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver. GPS measurements from the precise orbit determination GPS antenna on board these satellites can be used to determine TEC (total electron content) at the topside ionosphere-plasmasphere system for different conditions. Results derived from these missions are presented for the first time. The comparison was done for June and December solstice conditions at low and moderate solar activity levels for quiet geomagnetic activity. We obtain the quantitative estimates of electron content and its percentage contribution to the ground-based GPS TEC for topside ionosphere/plasmasphere at altitudes 250–500 km and above 500 km. Similarities and differences in such electron content distribution on a global scale are discussed. Distinctive features of the Weddell Sea Anomaly and equatorial ionization anomaly are evident in the topside TEC derived from GOCE GPS data. We report the Weddell Sea Anomaly presence in TEC at early morning local time.

Gravity gradient distribution in mainland China from GOCE satellite gravity gradiometry data

At present, gravity field and steady-state ocean circulation explorer (GOCE) gravity data are always used to compute regional gravity anomaly and geoid height. In this study, the latest GOCE gravity field model data (from Oct. 2009 to Jul. 2010) are used to compute the gravity gradient of mainland China according to a rigorous recursion formula (in all the six directions). The results show that the numerical values of the gravity gradients are larger in the Trr direction than those in the other directions. They reflect the terrain characteristics in detail and correlate with the regional tectonics; however, in the Tθλ and Trλ directions, the numerical values are relatively smaller and the gravity gradients in the Trλ direction do not reflect the terrain characteristics in detail.

Dynamic orbit parameterization and assessment in the frame of current GOCE gravity models

The role of gravity models is fundamental in satellite orbit determination representing the dynamical contribution of the observed gravity field in the equation of motion. We examine the validation of gravity models by implementing numerically an adapted dynamic orbit determination algorithm. We focus on GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) and GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) orbit analysis based on real orbital data and current GOCE gravity models. The contribution of the gravity models is implemented in a degree-wise cumulative sense, thus quantifying the band-limited performance of the individual models at satellite altitude. Furthermore, the proposed orbit analysis scheme leads to a validation of the different gravity models, providing an insight to the effect of the gravitational counterpart to the geometry of the orbit by expressing explicitly all computations to orbit perturbations defined along the three components of the orbital frame.

Accuracy assessment of GOCE-based geopotential models and their use for modelling the gravimetric quasigeoid - A case study for Poland

Abstract The GOCE (Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer) has significantly upgraded the knowledge on the Earth gravity field. In this contribution the accuracy of height anomalies determined from Global Geopotential Models (GGMs) based on approximately 27 months GOCE satellite gravity gradiometry (SGG) data have been assessed over Poland using three sets of precise GNSS/levelling data. The fits of height anomalies obtained from 4th release GOCE-based GGMs to GNSS/levelling data were discussed and compared with the respective ones of 3rd release GOCE-based GGMs and the EGM08. Furthermore, two highly accurate gravimetric quasigeoid models were developed over the area of Poland using high resolution Faye gravity anomalies. In the first, the GOCE-based GGM was used as a reference geopotential model, and in the second - the EGM08. They were evaluated with GNSS/levelling data and their accuracy performance was assessed. The use of GOCE-based GGMs for recovering the long-wavelength gravity signal in gravimetric quasigeoid modelling was discussed.
