A Rare Case of Granular Cell Tumour of Tongue in a 13-year-old Girl

Granular Cell Tumour (GCT) is a rare benign tumour that usually affects adults in the third to sixth decades, with females being more commonly affected. Here, a rare case of GCT occurring in a 13-year-old child is presented. A young girl presented with a painless swelling on the right-side of her tongue. Her past medical history was unremarkable. Upon examination, a firm, well-defined, non pulsatile, non tender lesion measuring 1×0.8 cm was noted, involving the right lateral border of the tongue. The lesion was excised and sent for histopathological examination. Gross examination revealed a 1×0.8×0.6 cm mass with a grey-white cut surface. Microscopy showed hyperplastic stratified squamous epithelium overlaying a submucosal tumour composed of polygonal cells arranged in sheets. The tumour cells had central small round nuclei with abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm and intervening skeletal muscle fibres. No necrosis, atypia, or increased mitosis were observed. Immunohistochemistry showed strong nuclear positivity and bright granular cytoplasmic positivity for S-100, confirming the diagnosis of GCT. The patient was followed-up for 14 months after surgery and reported no recurrences. GCTs typically manifest in older individuals, with the highest prevalence in the fifth and sixth decades of life. However, this case deviates from the norm, being noted in a 13-year-old child. This exceptionally unusual presentation should prompt the inclusion of GCT in the differential diagnosis of tongue neoplasms in paediatric patients as well. Periodic follow-up of these patients is recommended to detect malignant transformations and late recurrences at early stages.

A CASE REPORT OF MULTIPLE GRANULAR CELL TUMORS OF TONGUE WITH REVIEW OF LITERATURE.

Also called as Abrikossoff's tumor, the granular cell tumor (GCT) can occur in any part of the body, most of them occur in the head and neck especially in the tongue, cheek and palate. Almost three fourth of the lesions seen in head and neck are present over the tongue, oral mucosa or hard palate. Both benign and malignant lesions have been reported; although occurrence of malignancy is rare, comprising of 2% of all granular cell tumors. Here we present a case report of granular cell tumor of tongue at two different sites in a 17-year-old girl with a brief review of literature on granular cell tumors. Although oral GCTs exhibit a benign behavior they may demonstrate a wide variety of features and architectural patterns. Rather than a true neoplasm, GCTs could be regarded as lesions that reect a local metabolic or reactive change.

Granular cell tumor (GCT; Abrikossoff’s tumor; Myoblastoma) is a rare tumor that can affect various regions of the body, such as skin, soft tissues, breast, nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, urinary bladder and lungs. GCT in the head and neck region, which represents 45% to 65% of all the involved sites, is encountered most commonly in the oral tongue, especially on its anterior one third. A 36-year-old male, with a chief complaint of a slow-growing mass on the back of the tongue for 2.5 years. It was not associated with pain or dysphagia. There was no history of any significant medical or surgical illness in the past. He was a smoker and social drinker with fair oral hygiene. No cervical lymphadenopathy on regional examination. On intraoral examination, a round mass of about 0.8x0.8 cm on the back of the tongue. The patient was advised for the MRI which showed the round heterogeneous structure with unclear and non-smooth contours. We then performed the wide excision of the mass under GA and the specimen was sent for histopathological examination. postoperative period was uneventful and the lesion healed well. Thus the final diagnosis of Granular Cell tumor of tongue was made. The Tumors cells were immunopositively for S-100 protein and CD68; immunopositively for CKAE1/AE3, Ki67, Desmin. In conclusion: they are 3 important steps in the management rare tumors of the tongue: correct using of diagnostic algorithm, histopathologic examination, using this results for tactics and strategy of managing the patient.

Granular cell tumor of tongue: Report of two cases

Granular cell tumor (GCT), also known as Abrikossoff tumor, is a relatively uncommon benign neoplasm, which is more commonly found in females in the fourth to sixth decades of life. GCTs can affect any organ or region of the body. Most GCTs occur in the head and neck region, especially in the tongue, cheek mucosa, and palate. Clinically, benign GCT manifests as a nodular lesion that is generally asymptomatic and solitary, although cases of multiple lesions have been reported. We report two cases of GCT located on the tongue, first from a 17 year old female who is younger than the usual average age of presentation of GCT. The second case is a 40 year old female who presented with a superficial nodule on the tongue misleading, misleading to a clinical diagnosis of irritation fibroma rather than GCT.

Granular cell tumour of tongue: A case report.

Granular cell tumour, also known as Abrikossoff tumour, is a relatively uncommon benign neoplasm, which is more commonly found in females in the 4th to 6th decades of life even though it can occur in all ages. It occurs in all areas of the body but about 45-65% of all lesions are reported in the head and neck region. Intraoral lesions represent about 70% of the granular cell tumours of the head and neck, and account for 1/3 of all cases affecting the whole body. Most of the intraoral lesions occur on the tongue, usually on the lateral aspect, followed by the buccal mucosa and hard palate. Although majority of granular cell tumours are benign, some are clinically aggressive and a few frankly malignant forms have been reported. Some benign lesions exhibit surface ulcerations and this clinical appearance, combined with the overlying pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, seen histologically, may lead to misdiagnosis of malignancy if adequate biopsy material was not taken. A case of granular cell tumour which occurred on the midline area of the dorsum of the posterior 1/3 of the tongue is reported in a 20-year-old female patient. It is interesting because the patient was younger than the average age of occurrence and the tumour occurred in a similar site to that of a lingual thyroid.

Spontaneous Granular Cell Tumor of Tongue in An F344 Rat.

A spontaneous granular cell tumor of tongue was found in the routine pathological examination of a carcinogenicity study in rats. Histologically, this tumor was characterized by fascicular pattern of spindle cells containing variously sized eosinophilic granules in their cytoplasm and abundant intercellular collagen. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were stained positively for S-100 protein, but negatively for GFAP and desmin. Ultrastructurally, the tumor cell was invested by pericytoplasmic basal lamina. Judging from these findings, this granular cell tumor was considered to be derived from Schwann cells or their precursors.
