Validation and Error Minimization of Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Relative Height Metrics in the Amazon

Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a relatively new technology for global forest research, acquiring LiDAR measurements of vertical vegetation structure across Earth’s tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate forests. Previous GEDI validation efforts have largely focused on top of canopy accuracy, and findings vary by geographic region and forest type. Despite this, many applications utilize measurements of vertical vegetation distribution from the lower canopy, with a wide diversity of uses for GEDI data appearing in the literature. Given the variability in data requirements across research applications and ecosystems, and the regional variability in GEDI data quality, it is imperative to understand GEDI error to draw strong inferences. Here, we quantify the accuracy of GEDI relative height metrics through canopy layers for the Brazilian Amazon. To assess the accuracy of on-orbit GEDI L2A relative height metrics, we utilize the GEDI waveform simulator to compare detailed airborne laser scanning (ALS) data from the Sustainable Landscapes Brazil project to GEDI data collected by the International Space Station. We also assess the impacts of data filtering based on biophysical and GEDI sensor conditions and geolocation correction on GEDI error metrics (RMSE, MAE, and Bias) through canopy levels. GEDI data accuracy attenuates through the lower percentiles in the relative height (RH) curve. While top of canopy (RH98) measurements have relatively high accuracy (R2 = 0.76, RMSE = 5.33 m), the accuracy of data decreases lower in the canopy (RH50: R2 = 0.54, RMSE = 5.59 m). While simulated geolocation correction yielded marginal improvements, this decrease in accuracy remained constant despite all error reduction measures. Some error rates for the Amazon are double those reported in studies from other regions. These findings have broad implications for the application of GEDI data, especially in studies where forest understory measurements are particularly challenging to acquire (e.g., dense tropical forests) and where understory accuracy is highly important.

Producing annual Australia-wide vegetation height images from GEDI and Landsat data

ABSTRACT Vegetation height, and its spatial and temporal changes, is an important environmental parameter required for understanding natural habitats, estimating carbon stores and monitoring forestry activities. Recent satellite LiDAR altimetry sensors have discontinuous spatial coverage but can be combined with spatially complete remote sensing data to extrapolate to large regions. Earlier studies have focused on producing a single spatially continuous vegetation height product. This research builds on past studies, using Landsat (annual surface reflectance and fractional cover products) and the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) data to generate annual vegetation height layers from 1988 to 2022. GEDI data for 2019 were used to train and validate the model, resulting in a root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.45 m, mean absolute error (MAE) of 3.82 m, and coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.63. This accuracy reduces when the modelled height for 2020, 2021, and 2022 is compared to GEDI data for the same years (RMSE = 6.08–6.29 m, MAE = 4.36–4.73 m, and R2 = 0.48–0.54). Validation with independent field measurements across Australia from 2011 to 2021 shows an RMSE, MAE, and R2 of 8.2 m, 5.2 m, and 0.48, respectively. One source of error is the saturation of the Landsat signal in tall, closed canopy vegetation. While model accuracy is correlated with plot-based vegetation height measurements, results indicate that accuracy reduces for the years outside of the model calibration year (i.e. 2019). When compared to other vegetation height products (also produced using GEDI and spatial remote sensing data) from three independent published studies (one for 2009, one for 2019, and one for 2020), the model developed here tends to estimate 2–4 m taller than the first two studies and around 5 m shorter when compared to the third study. This investigation demonstrates the potential to produce multiyear vegetation height at a continental scale but also highlights the large uncertainty in modelled estimates especially when extrapolating to years other than the model calibration year.

Integrative plant area index retrieval and spatiotemporal analysis in Taihu Lake Basin via synergistic active-passive remote sensing techniques

ABSTRACT The Taihu Lake basin is one of the fastest-growing regions in China, where the natural environment has been seriously affected by humans. The plant area index (PAI) is an important parameter reflecting the change in vegetation growth, which plays a crucial role in studying vegetation growth and protecting the ecological environment. Advancements in remote sensing technology, complemented by machine learning techniques, have facilitated the accurate and efficient acquisition of PAI over large areas. In this study, the Taihu Lake Basin vegetation area was taken as the research object. Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) point cloud data and Landsat-8 remote sensing images were the primary information sources. MODIS land cover types were utilized to classify the vegetation into six categories. Three classical machine learning models, namely, Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Regression (SVR), and Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN), were used to estimate the PAI in the Taihu Lake Basin. It was found that the RF model showed the best performance. The determination coefficients (R2) for grassland, evergreen forest, mixed forest, deciduous forest, farmland, and wetland were 0.71, 0.67, 0.69, 0.66, 0.65, and 0.69, respectively. Over 2000-2022, the PAI exhibited an absolute change rate of 0.035, with an overall increasing trend. The area of improved and degraded vegetation accounted for 58.33% and 41.67% of the total area, respectively. The study also revealed that PAI was positively correlated with precipitation (R = 0.64, P < 0.05) and negatively correlated with temperature (R = -0.58, P < 0.05). Different land types’ effects on PAI were also analyzed, with wetland PAI having the smallest mean value and evergreen forest PAI having the most considerable mean value. This research underscores the effectiveness of integrating GEDI data and Landsat-8 imagery in PAI assessment, providing valuable insights for environmental monitoring and analysis in the Taihu Lake Basin.

Assessing GEDI data fusions to map woodpecker distributions and biodiversity hotspots

Abstract In forested systems, woodpecker species richness has been linked with songbird diversity, and identifying woodpecker biodiversity hotspots may contribute important information for conservation planning. The availability of global forest structure data via the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) instrument provides a new tool for examining broad extent relationships amongst environmental variables, forest structure, and woodpecker diversity hotspots. Within the Marine West Coast Forest ecoregion, USA, we used eBird data for 7 woodpecker species to model encounter rates based on bioclimatic variables, process data (e.g. duration and timing of survey), MODIS forest land cover data, and GEDI-fusion metrics. The GEDI-fusion metrics included foliage height diversity (fhd), rh98 (a representation of canopy height), and canopy cover, which were created by combining GEDI data with Landsat, Sentinel-1, topographic, and climatic information within a random forest modeling framework. AUCs for the species-specific models ranged from 0.77–0.98, where bioclimatic and process predictors were amongst the most important variables for all species. GEDI-fusion forest structure metrics were highly ranked for all species, with fhd included as a highly ranked predictor for all species. The structural metrics included as top predictors for each species were reflective of known species-specific habitat associations. Hotspots in this ecoregion tended to be inland and occurred most often on privately-owned lands. Identification of hotspots is the first step towards management plans focused on biodiversity, and understanding ownership patterns is important for future conservation efforts. The near-global extent of GEDI data, along with recent studies that recommend woodpeckers as indicators of biodiversity across multiple forest types at local and global scales, suggest that synthesis of GEDI-derived data applied to woodpecker detection information might be a powerful approach to identifying biodiversity hotspots.

Old-growth mapping in Patagonia’s evergreen forests must integrate GEDI data to overcome NFI data limitations and to effectively support biodiversity conservation

Structural metrics from the NASA Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) are vital to support monitoring, restoration and protection of high biodiversity spots. The Chilean Patagonia is home of pristine and unique ecosystems where GEDI data can provide knowledge on structure and biomass and expand the current limitation in Patagonia on field measurements and open lidar data. Conservation efforts are ramping up across our study area in the Aysén Region. Ongoing and future conservation efforts precise from unbiased estimates of forest carbon stocks to value and to protect forest biodiversity. We evaluate GEDI structural metrics and biomass estimates in the evergreen forests of the Chilean Patagonia using National Forest Inventory (NFI) data and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) lidar mapping to assess aboveground biomass density (AGBD) across six conservation projects. Estimates from GEDI ranged between 186 and 255 Mg ha-1. Both AGBD distributions for NFI plots and the gridded map were similarly centered as both converged in the median value (100 Mg ha-1). However, the NFI gridded map turned asymptotic after 200 Mg ha-1, showing the lack of representation in the NFI sampling of dense high-C forests, whereas GEDI estimates were able to sense these areas of old-growth forests. The distribution of GEDI tracks, the scale extension of the projects and the available NFI information explained the differences between using GEDI samples and the NFIcalibrated solution using UAV-lidar. Our results showed the limitations of the Chilean NFI over steep locations and uplands where old-growth forests dominate, and where only GEDI can depict structural metrics and reliable estimates of ADGB and forest carbon. This study is highly relevant to support conservation projects in Patagonia using publicly available GEDI data science, and to enforce ambitious legislation in Chile designed to protect biodiversity and for which quantification, reporting and verification of forest carbon stocks is crucial.

Estimation of above ground biomass in tropical heterogeneous forests in India using GEDI

Quantifying above ground biomass (AGB) and its spatial distribution can significantly contribute to monitor carbon stocks as well as the carbon storage dynamics in forests. For effective forest monitoring and management in the case of complex tropical Indian forests, there is a need to obtain reliable estimates of the amount of carbon sequestration at regional as well as national levels, but the estimation of biomass is quite challenging. The main objective of the study is to validate the usefulness of the gridded above ground biomass density (AGBD) estimates (ton/ha) of the spaceborne LiDAR Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation data (GEDI L4B, Version 2) across two tropical heterogeneous forests in India, Betul and Mudumalai forests. Methodology includes, for each forest area, a linear regression model which predicts AGB from Sentinel-2 MSI data was developed using ground reference data and comparing it with the GEDI AGBD values. The AGB model for the Betul forests in Central India had a RMSE of 13.9 ton/ha, relative RMSE = 8.7% and a R2 of 0.88, with a bias of −0.28 ton/ha, and a comparison between modelled AGB and GEDI gridded AGBD at 1 km resolution show a relatively strong correlation (0.66) and no or little bias. It also found that GEDI AGBD footprint value is underestimated compared to the AGB according to the Sentinel-2 model. For the Mudumalai forest in southern India, the AGB model had an RMSE of 29.1 ton/ha, relative RMSE = 10.8%, and an R2 of 0.79 and a bias of −0.022. The correlation between modelled AGB and gridded GEDI AGBD was 0.84, and GEDI AGBD is underestimated compared to AGB from the Sentinel-2 model. The field values of AGB of Betul lies between 42.2 ton/ha and 238.8 ton/ha and for the Mudumalai forests, the AGB lies between 75.9 ton/ha and 353.6 ton/ha. The results indicates that the GEDI gridded AGBD underestimates AGB, and that the model used to produce the gridded AGBD product needs to be adjusted to provide reliable information on the carbon balance and its changes over time for the type of Indian forests that exists in the two test areas.

Accuracy assessment of GEDI terrain elevation, canopy height, and aboveground biomass density estimates in Japanese artificial forests

Global forests face severe challenges owing to climate change, making dynamic and accurate monitoring of forest conditions critically important. Forests in Japan, covering approximately 70% of the country's land area, play a vital role yet often overlooked in global forestry. Japanese forests are unique, with approximately 50% comprising artificial forests, predominantly coniferous forests. Despite the Japanese government's extensive use of airborne Light Detecting and Ranging (LiDAR) to assess forest conditions, these data need more availability and frequency. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), the first Spaceborne LiDAR data explicitly designed for vegetation monitoring, is expected to provide significant value for high-frequency and high-accuracy forest monitoring. To assess the accuracy of GEDI data in Japanese artificial coniferous forests, the reference data were gathered from 53,967,770 artificial coniferous trees via airborne LiDAR data in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. This data was then compared to the corresponding GEDI-derived terrain elevations, canopy heights (GEDI RH98), and aboveground biomass density (AGBD) estimates to assess the accuracy of GEDI data. This research also explored how different factors influence the accuracy of GEDI terrain elevation estimates, including the type of beam, time of acquisition (day or night), beam sensitivity, and terrain slope. Additionally, the effects of various forest structural parameters, such as the height-to-diameter ratio, crown length ratio, and the number of trees on the accuracy of the GEDI canopy height and AGBD, were investigated. The results showed that GEDI terrain elevation demonstrated high accuracy across various slope conditions, with rRMSE ranging from 2.28% to 3.25% and RMSE ranging from 11.68 m to 16.54 m. After geolocation adjustment, the comparison of canopy height estimates derived from GEDI to airborne LiDAR-derived canopy height also showed high accuracy, exhibiting a rRMSE of 22.04%. In contrast, the GEDI AGBD product showed moderate accuracy, with a rRMSE of 52.79%. The findings also indicated that the accuracy of GEDI RH98 was influenced by terrain slope and crown length ratio, whereas the accuracy of GEDI AGBD was mainly impacted by the number of trees and crown length ratio. This study provided the first baseline accuracy assessment of GEDI terrain elevation, RH98, and AGBD estimates in Japanese artificial forests. Furthermore, this study provided valuable insights into the accuracy of GEDI metrics by examining potential factors.

Effects of Eucalyptus plantation characteristics and environmental factors on GEDI waveform metrics

ABSTRACT The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a high-resolution lidar instrument, facilitating landscape monitoring through forest structure and biomass assessments. Previous research has mainly focused on estimating forest attributes such as height and biomass from GEDI data. In this comprehensive study, we empirically investigate how Eucalyptus plantation characteristics and environmental factors collectively influence GEDI waveform metrics. Using a diverse dataset that includes measurements of canopy height, planting density, foliage characteristics, species composition, understorey presence and environmental conditions such as climate and soil properties, we explore the complex relationships between these attributes and GEDI waveform metrics using a two-step approach that includes assessing the linear relationship between each in-situ parameter and GEDI metrics, and also random forest modelling. Key findings include: 1) While canopy height (Ht) plays a significant role in shaping the GEDI waveform, forest wood volume (Volume), which incorporates height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of the trees and also tree stem density (Ntree/ha), exerts an even greater influence on GEDI metrics, in particular on the waveform extent (WE) and relative heights (RH); 2) The influence of factors such as foliage biomass and wood volume on GEDI waveform varies vertically from the forest floor up to forest top, and the model was more precise to predict the top part of the waveform; 3) No single attribute can solely account for the observed variations in the waveform characteristics, but multiple interactions between different forest and environmental features contribute to the complex patterns in the received waveforms. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between forest plantation characteristics and GEDI waveform metrics and highlights the need to consider a wide range of forest attributes in the analyse of GEDI waveform to produce more accurate canopy height or volume estimates.

Impact of fire severity on forest structure and biomass stocks using NASA GEDI data. Insights from the 2020 and 2021 wildfire season in Spain and Portugal

Wildfires have been progressively shrinking the C sink capacity of forest accelerating climate change effects on forest biodiversity, especially where megafires are recurrent and of increased frequency such as in the Mediterranean. Data from The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission can inform on changes on forest structure to inform on fire impacts on vegetation. In this study, we assessed the performance of GEDI at measuring biomass and structural change from wildfires using the 2020/21 summer fire seasons in Spain and Portugal. The GEDI hybrid-inference method was used to calculate mean and total biomass in pre- and post-fire stages, while GEDI footprint data was further used to explain the fire severity classes derived from optical data. Our results showed the increasing impact of wildfires on biomass stocks and GEDI ecological metrics by increasing fire severity. More than over biomass stocks, severe fires substantially altered trends in structural metrics such as plant area volume density. The integration of GEDI metrics to explain fire severity had an accuracy of 52% considering five severity classes and an accuracy of 69% when considering the three main classes: unburned, moderate and high. Structural metrics from GEDI can be used to improve optical-based fire severity estimates used globally and to evaluate potential fire impacts based on time-series of GEDI tracks as showcased in the study, but also to measure forest recovery between fire seasons. The extension of GEDI is a major support for wildfire mapping efforts, integrated approaches to capture the increasing impact of fire on forest biodiversity and the monitoring of changes in carbon stocks.

High-Resolution Canopy Height Mapping: Integrating NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) with Multi-Source Remote Sensing Data

Accurate structural information about forests, including canopy heights and diameters, is crucial for quantifying tree volume, biomass, and carbon stocks, enabling effective forest ecosystem management, particularly in response to changing environmental conditions. Since late 2018, NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission has monitored global canopy structure using a satellite Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) instrument. While GEDI has collected billions of LiDAR shots across a near-global range (between 51.6°N and &gt;51.6°S), their spatial distribution remains dispersed, posing challenges for achieving complete forest coverage. This study proposes and evaluates an approach that generates high-resolution canopy height maps by integrating GEDI data with Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and topographical ancillary data through three machine learning (ML) algorithms: random forests (RF), gradient tree boost (GB), and classification and regression trees (CART). To achieve this, the secondary aims included the following: (1) to assess the performance of three ML algorithms, RF, GB, and CART, in predicting canopy heights, (2) to evaluate the performance of our canopy height maps using reference canopy height from canopy height models (CHMs), and (3) to compare our canopy height maps with other two existing canopy height maps. RF and GB were the top-performing algorithms, achieving the best 13.32% and 16% root mean squared error for broadleaf and coniferous forests, respectively. Validation of the proposed approach revealed that the 100th and 98th percentile, followed by the average of the 75th, 90th, 95th, and 100th percentiles (AVG), were the most accurate GEDI metrics for predicting real canopy heights. Comparisons between predicted and reference CHMs demonstrated accurate predictions for coniferous stands (R-squared = 0.45, RMSE = 29.16%).

Forest aboveground biomass estimation by GEDI and multi-source EO data fusion over Indian forest

ABSTRACT Monitoring changes in carbon stocks through forest biomass assessment is crucial for carbon cycle studies. However, challenges in obtaining timely and reliable ground measurements hinder creation of the spatially continuous maps of forest aboveground biomass density (AGBD). This study proposes an approach for generating spatially continuous maps of forest aboveground biomass density (AGBD) by combining Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR-based data with open-access earth observation (EO) data. The key contribution of the study lies in the systematic evaluation of various model configurations to select the optimal model for AGBD generation. The evaluation considered various model configurations, including predictor sets, spatial resolution, beam selection, and sensitivity thresholds. We used a Random Forest model, trained through five-fold cross-validation on 80% of the total data, to estimate AGBD in the Indian forest region. Model performance was assessed using the 20% independent test dataset. Results, using Sentinel-1 and 2 predictors, yielded R2 values of 0.55 to 0.60 and RMSE of 48.5 to 56.3 Mg/ha. Incorporating forest and agroclimatic zone attributes improved performance (R2: 0.59 to 0.69, RMSE: 42.2 to 53.3 Mg/ha). The selection of the top 15 predictors, which favoured features from Sentinel-2, DEM, forest attributes, and agroclimatic zones, and GEDI data with sensitivity >0.98, yielded the optimal model with an R2 of 0.64 and RMSE of 46.59 Mg/ha. The results underscore the significance of incorporating attributes like forest and agro-climatic zones and the need for an optimal model selection considering predictor types and GEDI shot characteristics. The top-performing model is validated in Simdega, Jharkhand (R2: 0.74, RMSE: 39.3 Mg/ha), demonstrating the methodological potential of this approach. Overall, this study emphasizes the methodological prospects of integrating multi-source open-access EO data to produce spatially continuous aboveground biomass (AGB) maps through data fusion.

Definition criteria determine the success of old-growth mapping

Old-growth forests have been widely studied for decades. The extreme diversity of old forest characteristics has inspired an equally diverse set of old-growth definitions, and makes mapping old-growth difficult across large areas and different forest types. While the use of remote sensing in old-growth research is not new, there is a growing need for large scale mapping to improve understanding of old forest processes and to support old-growth conservation. Old-growth mapping requires definitions that are ecologically relevant to old forests while also transferable to remote sensing data. In this paper we develop a conceptual framework to evaluate three dimensions of old-growth—a temporal dimension related to tree ages, a physical dimension related to tree sizes, and a functional dimension related to forest processes. In the first part of our analysis, we classify forests throughout the eastern US as old or not with respect to each old-growth dimension using existing old-growth definitions and data from the US Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. We estimate the proportion of forest classified as old within a hexagon grid, resulting in a unique map of old forest proportion (OFP) for each dimension. Subsequently, we use spaceborne lidar data from NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) to reproduce each OFP map in a modeling framework designed to 1) assess the extent to which each dimension of forest oldness can be mapped at large spatial scales, and 2) identify biophysical GEDI variables related to each dimension of forest oldness. We estimate that only 2% of forest classified as old in any dimension satisfied the old criteria in all three dimensions. We found substantial spatial variation in the mapped OFP estimates across the three dimensions, highlighting how definition criteria impacts old-growth maps. We also found that physically old forests were more effectively mapped using GEDI data than functionally or temporally old forests, and that physically old forests were more structurally similar to one another than temporally or functionally old forests. Our modeling results indicate that while remote sensing may be best suited to mapping physical old-growth characteristics, definitions that rely solely on physical characteristics do not adequately represent old forests throughout the eastern US. We propose that future efforts to map old-growth with spaceborne remote sensing data may maximize utility through collaboration between western and indigenous old-growth experts to determine broad yet nuanced approaches that are appropriately tailored to the target variable of old forests. These efforts should balance explicit and ecologically relevant old-growth definitions specifically for mapping that can be linked to remotely sensed data, 2) appropriate spatial resolutions, and 3) flexible quantitative frameworks that encompass the complexities and heterogeneity of old forests.

Performance of GEDI data combined with Sentinel-2 images for automatic labelling of wall-to-wall corn mapping

Corn is the dominant crop planted in Northeast China, and its accurate and timely mapping is important for food security and agricultural management in China. However, the absence of enough labels is challenging for corn accurate mapping in a regional area using machine learning methods or deep learning methods. In this study, an efficient way of automatic labelling and mapping of corn planted areas by combining Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) data and Sentinel-2 images is proposed. We explore the height and vertical structure differences between corn and other crops derived from GEDI features and generate labels automatically by referencing crop type products and transferring models from historical years. The trained learning networks of automatic labelling from GEDI points and the trained decision trees of the Random Forest (RF) classifier can be transferred to corn mapping in arbitrary target years. The Sentinel-2 features are combined to perform wall-to-wall corn mapping using a random forest algorithm and GEDI-based labels. This approach is used to map corn planted areas in Northeast China from 2019 to 2022, and the classification results are validated using independent labels collected in field campaigns in 2023, published maps, and official statistics. Our classification results reveal that our proposed method achieves high accuracy and robustness with an average overall accuracy of 0.91 validated using testing labels from spatial-type stratified sampling. The correlation coefficient (R2) between our classified result with the official statistical data and published classification results reach 0.96 and 0.98, respectively. These results demonstrate the potential of GEDI data for automatic label collection for vegetation with height difference and provide a new approach for efficient crop mapping on a large-scale.

State-wide forest canopy height and aboveground biomass map for New York with 10 m resolution, integrating GEDI, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 data

Investigating the quantity of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for understanding the role forests play in the global carbon cycle. The canopy height model (CHM) is a critical component in estimating AGB, as it provides a three-dimensional representation of the tree canopy. Traditional CHM estimation methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and expensive, particularly at large-scales. Remote sensing is a cost-effective and efficient alternative approach, providing valuable information over large areas in a timely manner. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) onboard the International Space Station is a space-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system designed to collect information on vertical structures of vegetation. One major problem with the collection of GEDI data is that it provides limited information over discrete ground samples, also known as footprints, and thus do not provide wall-to-wall gridded height products. The objective of this study was twofold: a) to integrate the GEDI LiDAR footprint heights with Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery to generate a 10 m wall-to-wall CHM map of New York State (NYS), USA for the year 2019 and b) to improve our previously generated AGB map (both accuracy and resolution) of NYS for the year 2019 by fusing Sentinel-2 multispectral, Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and the produced CHM. To generate the 10 m CHM map, the GEDI footprints height measurements were extrapolated using Sentinel-2 imagery and a random forest model. The CHM that was produced was assessed by using GEDI footprints that were not part of the training phase and were therefore independent (extrapolated). Comparing our 10 m CHM with the available global 30 m CHM map provided by Potapov et al. (2021) over NYS shows significant improvement not only in terms of spatial resolution, but also in terms of accuracy. The root mean square error (RMSE) of our 10 m CHM is 4.4 m while this value is 7.49 m for the 30 m CHM over NYS. Similarly, the R2 value for the 10 m CHM map is 0.74, while that of the 30 m CHM is 0.46. Finally, the integration of produced 10 m CHM, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 datasets were utilized to create a 10 m AGB map of NYS with the RMSE of 39.49 Mg/ha, and R2 of 0.65. The results demonstrate the potential of integrating GEDI, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2 data for providing a valuable tool for large-scale mapping of forest canopy structure and biomass, which can help to inform forest management and carbon accounting efforts.

Evaluation of Tree-Growth Rate in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve Using GEDI and Airborne-LiDAR Data

Loss of forest cover and derived effects on forest ecosystems services has led to the establishment of land management policies and forest monitoring systems, and consequently to the demand for accurate and multitemporal data on forest extent and structure. In recent years, spaceborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) missions, such as the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) instrument, have facilitated the repeated acquisition of data on the vertical structure of vegetation. In this study, we designed an approach incorporating GEDI and airborne LiDAR data, in addition to detailed forestry inventory data, for estimating tree-growth dynamics for the Laurentides wildlife reserve in Canada. We estimated an average tree-growth rate of 0.32 ± 0.23 (SD) m/year for the study site and evaluated our results against field data and a time series of NDVI from Landsat images. The results are in agreement with expected patterns in tree-growth rates related to tree species and forest stand age, and the produced dataset is able to track disturbance events resulting in the loss of canopy height. Our study demonstrates the benefits of using spaceborne-LiDAR data for extending the temporal coverage of forestry inventories and highlights the ability of GEDI data for detecting changes in forests’ vertical structure.

Computational tools for assessing forest recovery with GEDI shots and forest change maps

Tropical secondary forests are ecosystems of critical importance for protecting biodiversity, buffering primary forest loss, and sequestering atmospheric carbon. Monitoring growth and carbon sequestration in secondary forests is difficult, with inventory plots sampling <0.001% of secondary forests. The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), a space-borne LiDAR sampler, provides billions of aboveground carbon density (ACD) estimates across the tropics. We fuse these carbon density estimates with a time series of forest change maps to identify their age since last deforestation and thus estimate the average rate of carbon sequestration in secondary forests across the Amazon biome. To our knowledge, this is the first estimate of these rates made using the new GEDI dataset. Moreover, this paper addresses key statistical and computational challenges of GEDI data fusion and analysis. We propagate both GEDI ACD and geolocation uncertainty to the regrowth rate estimate through a Monte Carlo approach, and we handle heteroskedasticity, outliers, and spatial autocorrelation using robust statistical methods. The large size of the GEDI dataset combined with the proposed Monte Carlo bootstrap can be highly computationally intensive, with a naive implementation taking over a month to complete. Nevertheless, we demonstrate the feasibility of our method by developing optimized open-source code that performs this computation on the 151 million quality-filtered GEDI shots available for the Amazon biome from April 2019–August 2021 in under 25 min in benchmark tests. By resolving these statistical and computational challenges with an efficient open-source pipeline, we create a standard approach that can be used more broadly in any work seeking to combine the GEDI dataset with high-resolution classification maps. Using this approach, we identify approximately 23, 000 GEDI samples of regrowing forest at least 60 m × 60 m wide across the Amazon biome and estimate a carbon sequestration rate of 1.86 MgC/ha/yr with a 95% empirical confidence interval of 1.75–1.97 MgC/ha/yr, with rates varying from 1.27 to 1.99 MgC/ha/yr across smaller subregions.

Evaluation and Comparison of ICESat-2 and GEDI Data for Terrain and Canopy Height Retrievals in Short-Stature Vegetation

Two space-borne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) missions, Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), have demonstrated high capabilities in extracting terrain and canopy heights in forest environments. However, there have been limited studies evaluating their performance for terrain and canopy height retrievals in short-stature vegetation. This study utilizes airborne LiDAR data to validate and compare the accuracies of terrain and canopy height retrievals for short-stature vegetation using the latest versions of ICESat-2 (Version 5) and GEDI (Version 2). Furthermore, this study also analyzes the influence of various factors, such as vegetation type, terrain slope, canopy height, and canopy cover, on terrain and canopy height retrievals. The results indicate that ICESat-2 (bias = −0.05 m, RMSE = 0.67 m) outperforms GEDI (bias = 0.39 m, RMSE = 1.40 m) in terrain height extraction, with similar results observed for canopy height retrievals from both missions. Additionally, the findings reveal significant differences in terrain and canopy height retrieval accuracies between ICESat-2 and GEDI data under different data acquisition scenarios. Error analysis results demonstrate that terrain slope plays a pivotal role in influencing the accuracy of terrain height extraction for both missions, particularly for GEDI data, where the terrain height accuracy decreases significantly with increasing terrain slope. However, canopy height has the most substantial impact on the estimation accuracies of GEDI and ICESat-2 canopy heights. Overall, these findings confirm the strong potential of ICESat-2 data for terrain and canopy height retrievals in short-stature vegetation areas, and also provide valuable insights for future applications of space-borne LiDAR data in short-stature vegetation-dominated ecosystems.

Combining Landsat time series and GEDI data for improved characterization of fuel types and canopy metrics in wildfire simulation

Wildfires in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) and other radioactively contaminated areas threaten human health and well-being with the potential to resuspend radionuclides. Wildfire behavior simulation is a necessary tool to examine the efficiency of fuel treatments in the CEZ, but it requires systematically updated maps of fuel types and canopy metrics. The objective of this study was to demonstrate an effective approach for mapping fuel types, canopy height (CH), and canopy cover (CC) in territories contaminated by radionuclides using Landsat time series (LTS) and Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR observations. We combined LTS and GEDI data to map fuel types and canopy metrics used in wildfire simulations within the CEZ. Our classification model showed an adequate overall accuracy (75%) in mapping land covers and associated fuel types. The phenology metrics extracted from LTS reliably distinguished spectrally similar vegetation types (such as grasslands and croplands) which exhibit different flammability through the year. We also predicted a suite of relative heights metrics and CC at Landsat 30-m pixel level (R2 = 0.23–0.26) using the nearest neighbor technique. The imputed maps adequately captured the dynamics of CH and CC in the CEZ after recent large wildfires occurred in 2015, 2020, and 2022. Thus, we illustrate a LTS processing approach to produce wall-to-wall maps of canopy characteristics that are important for wildfire simulations. We conclude that continuous updating of land cover and canopy fuel data is crucial to ensure relevant fire management of radioactively contaminated landscapes and support local decision-making.

Estimating aboveground biomass density using hybrid statistical inference with GEDI lidar data and Paraguay’s national forest inventory

Forests are widely recognized as critical to combating climate change due to their ability to sequester and store carbon in the form of biomass. In recent years, the combined use of data from ground-based forest inventories and remotely sensed data from light detection and ranging (lidar) has proven useful for large-scale assessment of forest biomass, but airborne lidar is expensive and data acquisition is infeasible for many countries. By contrast, the spaceborne Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) lidar instrument has collected freely available data for most of the world’s temperate and tropical forests since 2019. GEDI’s biomass products rely on models calibrated with a global network of field plots paired with GEDI waveforms simulated from airborne lidar to predict biomass. While this calibration strategy minimizes spatial and temporal offsets between field measurements and corresponding lidar returns, calibration data are sparse in many regions. Paraguay’s forests are known to be poorly represented in GEDI’s current calibration dataset, and here we demonstrate that local models calibrated opportunistically with on-orbit GEDI data and field surveys from Paraguay’s national forest inventory can be used with GEDI’s statistical estimators of aboveground biomass density (AGBD). We specify a protocol for opportunistically matching GEDI observations with field plots to calibrate a field-to-GEDI biomass model for use in GEDI’s hybrid statistical framework. Country-specific calibration using on-orbit data resulted in relatively accurate and unbiased predictions of footprint-level biomass, and importantly, supported the assumption underlying model-based inference that the model must ‘apply’ to the area of interest. Using a locally calibrated biomass model, we estimate that the mean AGBD in Paraguay is 65.55 Mg ha−1, which coincides well with the design-based approach employed by the national forest inventory. The GEDI estimates for individual forest strata range from 52.34 Mg ha−1 to 103.88 Mg ha−1. On average, the standard errors are 47% lower for estimates based on GEDI than the forest inventory, representing a significant gain in precision. Our research demonstrates that GEDI can be used by national forest inventories in countries that seek reliable estimates of AGBD, and that local calibration using existing field plots may be more appropriate in some applications than using GEDI global models, especially in regions where those models are sparsely calibrated.

Precise and unbiased biomass estimation from GEDI data and the US Forest Inventory

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are dependent on land-atmosphere carbon fluxes resultant from forest dynamics and land-use changes. These fluxes are not well-constrained, in part because reliable baseline estimates of forest carbon stocks and the associated uncertainties are lacking. NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) produces estimates of aboveground biomass density (AGBD) that are unique because GEDI's hybrid estimation framework enables formal uncertainty calculations that accompany the biomass estimates. However, GEDI's estimates are not without issue; a recent validation using design-based AGBD estimates from the US Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program revealed systematic differences between GEDI and FIA estimates within a hexagon tessellation of the continental United States. Here, we explored these differences and identified two issues impacting GEDI's estimation process: incomplete filtering of low quality GEDI observations and regional biases in GEDI's footprint-level biomass models. We developed a solution to each, in the form of improved data filtering and GEDI-FIA fusion AGBD models, developed in a scale-invariant small area estimation framework, that were compatible with hybrid estimation. We calibrated 10 regional Fay-Herriot models at the hexagon scale for application at the unit scale of GEDI footprints, for which we provide a mathematical justification and empirical testing of the models' scale-invariance. These models predicted realistic distributions of unit level AGBD, with equal or improved performance relative to GEDI's L4A models for all regions. We then produced GEDI-FIA fusion estimates that were more precise than the FIA estimates and resulted in a bias reduction of 86.7% relative to the original GEDI estimates: 19.3% due to improved data filtering and 67.5% due to the new AGBD models. Our findings indicate that (1) small area estimation models trained in a scale-invariant framework can produce realistic predictions of AGBD, and (2) there is substantial spatial variability in the relationship between GEDI forest structure metrics and AGBD. This work is a step toward achieving reliable baseline forest carbon stocks, provides a viable methodology for training remote sensing biomass models, and may serve as a reference for other investigations of GEDI AGBD estimates.
