The Geoscience Information Society (GIS) is a society whose goal is to facilitate the exchange of information in the geosciences through cooperation among scientists, librarians, editors, cartographers, and other specialists. The organization is international in scope and has representation from universities, businesses, publishers, geological surveys, geological societies, and other nonprofit organizations. The declining student enrollments in geology and the impact of this decline on geologic education are evident to all of our various constituencies. Because of their concern over the matter, the GIS participated in the Earth Science Education Project (ESEP) under the American Geological Institute. Additionally, in honor of the 25th Anniversary of GIS, a 1990 issue of The Compass, the publication of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, has been authored by GIS members and dedicated to the use of information by the undergraduate- and graduate-student audience.
