Automated mapping process of frontal area and thermal potential indexes: GIS algorithm development and implementation

The impacts of urban areas on microclimate conditions are well-known and highlight the importance of climatological guided urban planning. The growth and evolution of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have set a backdrop for implementing strategies to apply urban climatological knowledge in planning daily practice. This research brings algorithms to automate the Frontal Area Index (FAI) and Thermal Potential Index (TPI) mapping process. This type of algorithms type facilitates the extraction of detailed spatial information for the decision-making process, making it highly relevant for urban planning and management. Their calculation method is implemented as ESRI © ArcGIS Pro embedded Python Stand Alone Script Tools, using the Python ArcPy library to access the ArcGIS geoprocessing functions. The algorithms are described in detail, allowing their implementation in other GIS platforms. The output maps allow the urban thermal conditions and morphology assessment. The findings from this research may substantially contribute both to the advance in the urban climatology scientific field and to guide urban planners' and managers' practical decision making.

Czech education system’s conditions for the implementation of GIS in the curriculum in an international context

The implementation of geospatial technologies in both primary and secondary education is more than desirable. However, many obstacles stand in the way. This paper reflects on the current state of geographic information systems (GIS) implementation in the educational curriculum in Czechia in comparison with an international context. The study aimed to analyse the anchoring of GIS in Czech curricula and identify the enablers and barriers to the use of GIS in education. It employed a questionnaire survey to capture a large number of responses (n = 94); following this, guided interviews were conducted with selected teachers (n = 9) to delve deeper into the selected topics. This research work shows that external barriers to the use of GIS in teaching are essentially non-existent; specifically, (the curriculum does not hinder GIS implementation, school management support is sufficient, and the material and technical facilities required are available in most schools). However, teachers’ non-/unpreparedness—their lack of motivation or experience in teaching with GIS—is a significant internal barrier.

Activity Theory Approach and Geographic Information Systems Affordance for Effective Land Management and Administration Actualization

This research explores the challenges and drivers of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) affordance actualization within the Ministry of Land and Survey, Yola, Nigeria. The problem at hand is the underutilization of GIS technology in many public organizations, often resulting in failed projects and misfit due to cultural inclinations. To address this issue, Activity Theory was employed as a theoretical framework, innovatively applying it to the interpretation of human-technology interactions within a public sector setting. An in-depth interpretive research study at the Ministry of Land and Survey (MLS) was conducted, focusing on the sub-unit triangular and subject-cascaded models guided by integrated nested Activity Theory. The research reveals novel insights into the application of GIS in public organizations. The findings underscore the critical role of factors such as funding, legitimization, technology (tools), user cognition, geo-visualization, spatial infrastructure, and outcomes in facilitating GIS affordance actualization. These elements have been redefined within the context of land administration in public organizations. The research introduces two new theoretical constructs, "Spatial Data Infrastructure" and "Geo-visualization," further extending the integrated Activity Theory constructs. The importance of this study lies in its potential to inform GIS professionals, developers, and policymakers. The newly developed mid-level theoretical model, Spatial Information Affording Approach (SISAA) offers a comprehensive framework for designing effective GIS systems that streamline land transactions, enhance revenue generation, reduce land disputes, and bolster the overall integrity of land administration in public sectors. This research contributes not only to the Nigerian context but also holds relevance for public organizations worldwide that use GIS in land management. In conclusion, this study bridges a significant gap in the current body of knowledge by providing a spatially enabled theoretical framework for GIS applications in culturally organized public organizations. It has the potential to drive improvements in land administration and promote the successful implementation of GIS in the public sector, aligning with global agendas such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Experiences of the Geography Subject Advisors in the Implementation of Geographic Information Systems in KwaZulu-Natal Province

This paper explored the experiences of geography subject advisors (GSAs) in the implementation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in South African schools. This was done to determine how they assist in the implementation of GIS. National senior certificate diagnostic reports for matric results indicate every year that learners are performing poorly in the GIS section of geography subject. The current literature shows that there is a lack of pedagogical content knowledge in geography teachers in the teaching and learning of GIS. Several scholars have written about learners and educators in the implementation of GIS in schools, but there is a lack of literature on GSAs’ experiences in the implementation of GIS in schools. This paper is underpinned by instructional leadership theory, which argues for leadership to focus their efforts on implementing of practices that positively impact students’ learning. Qualitative research approach, and semi-structured interviews were used to generate data to answer the research questions. Two GSAs from two selected districts were purposively chosen to participate in this study. The findings showed that GSAs organise workshops for educators. However, certain educators do not attend workshops and other workshops which are planned, do not materialise. GSAs rely on geography educators that are knowledgeable about GIS to assist in workshops by teaching others. GIS teaching in schools was aledged to be focused on a theoretical aspect without integrating the practical part. The study proposes that the DBE in collaboration with higher education institutions, should provide GIS teacher training opportunities for teachers.

Attitudes of Teachers and Students towards the Possibilities of GIS Implementation in Secondary Schools in Croatia

The geographic information system (GIS) is, at the global level, recognized as one of the best ICTs for implementation in the subject of geography. The application of GIS in the Republic of Croatia (RH) lags behind developed countries. The main objective of this research was to examine the attitudes of secondary school students and geography teachers regarding the introduction of GIS in the educational system process. In the period from 3 October 2021 to 27 January 2022, a survey questionnaire was conducted in 30 secondary schools in the RH on a sample of 611 students and 96 teachers. The results have showed that both teachers and students have a positive attitude toward the introduction of GIS for the purpose of teaching geography. More than 80% of teachers believe that GIS is not sufficiently represented in the high school and geography curricula which is recognized as one of the most important factors which limit GIS implementation. A majority (77%) of teachers are not using GIS on any teaching level, which is not surprising since both surveyed teachers and students have poor knowledge of GIS, although teachers rated their knowledge a little higher. Teachers perceive students’ interest in GIS exactly as students express it; predominantly indifferent. The most important factors limiting the implementation of GIS are recognized as: a lack of necessary GIS software and licenses; not knowing how to use GIS; and an insufficient number of teaching units dedicated to GIS in the geography curricula. An equal percentage of both teachers and students believe that there are prerequisites for GIS implementation in their schools. One of the basic prerequisites for GIS implementation is that education authorities need to “see” GIS as an important part of geography and include it more in school curricula. In almost all countries where GIS has been implemented in schools, difficulties in its implementation have been documented.

Data Warehouse and Interactive Map for Promoting Cultural Heritage in Saudi Arabia Using GIS

With the urbanization of various regions, many historical sites may be misrepresented or totally neglected. As more people move to urban areas with time, heritage areas are being abandoned or ignored. The roads leading to such areas are less maintained, and they are not being adequately promoted. Over the years, the emergence and evolution of digital maps have played a significant role in tourist and cultural exploration and are important sources of information for tourists who are considering specific destinations. In this paper, the authors discuss the development and implementation of a geographic information system (GIS) in the tourism industry. They create an interactive map for tourist sites and suggest a means of retrieving tourist data. They select the Aseer region as a case study since it is rich with deep cultural heritage, comprising almost 4,000 heritage villages, and is considered to be one of the most important tourist destinations in the country. In this paper, the authors propose an initiative for the development and implementation of GIS in the tourism industry.

Implementation of Geographic Information System for Tourist Locations and Lodging Services in Lhokseumawe City Based on Android

The advancement of information technology is now increasingly widespread and very rapidly growing so that it can help people to enjoy the various conveniences that have been produced by this technology. One aspect of technology currently developing rapidly is mobile technology on smartphone devices (smartphones). This android-based geographic information system application is one of the results of these technological developments, which have the benefits and uses that are needed in this day and age. So with the development of the world of technology, people prefer the way of convenience and efficiency, for example, by utilizing the sophistication of smartphones. Implementing the Geographic Information System (GIS) for tourism and lodging services in Lhokseumawe aims to build tourism applications and lodging services in Lhokseumawe based on Android and implement Google services. Maps Application Programming Interface (API) to facilitate tourists in obtaining information on mapping the location of tourist attractions and lodging, routes, and tourist support facilities in Lhokseumawe City. The method used is a waterfall process model. Implementing the Lhokseumawe Tourism Application and lodging services using Javascript programming with Android Studio, MySQL database, and maps sourced from the Google Maps API. The result is an Android-based Lhokseumawe City Tourism and lodging service application that helps make it easier for tourists to obtain information about tourist attractions, lodging, and routes from their current location to the desired tourist and lodging locations in Lhokseumawe City with the help of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Tourist information and lodging services are entirely related only to data entered into the database server. The results of this application display a list and location of tourist and lodging services as well as the shortest route to the nearest tourist or inn to the user's location point. It is also hoped that this system can be developed to produce a better system than the previous one.

Design and implementation of geographic information system with mobile terminal and 5G network

AbstractRemote insurance mainly completes quotation, insurance application and payment through the PC terminal and mobile terminal, and the premium directly enters the insurance account. This article takes remote insurance as an example. First, it analyses the requirements of the remote insurance and insurance system, and then collects data from the mobile terminal. The system geographic information system (GIS) server subsystem and GIS information management subsystem are designed in three aspects. GPS data and video image data are collected and processed in the data acquisition subsystem, forwarded by the GIS server, and sent to the GIS information management subsystem. Geographic information system information management realises online loss determination through basic information query, geographic location identification, scheduling, path planning, real‐time tracking, image information etc. on the mobile terminal, combined with insurance and insurance business. In terms of implementation, the GIS information management platform and Google Maps are used to realise the monitoring, scheduling and path planning of the mobile terminal GIS online platform. And conduct experimental research on the content‐centric 5G structure. The results show that the transmission interference time of the content‐centric network‐based 5G structure is 390 ms, which is much lower than the 800 ms demanded for GSM‐R system. It proves that the content‐centric network‐based 5G structure has good mobile performance; the test of the content‐centric network verifies that the content‐centric network has the advantages of balancing network load and preventing network congestion; meanwhile, the test of the proposed The functions and performance of the GIS system proposed in this paper are tested. The results meet the user requirements.

Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) Applications in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Malaysia

In a world today, that is highly dependent on information technologies, Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) has become one of advancement in spatial technologies that had been used to tackle the issue of an uncertain world. Primarily functioned with specialized capabilities in manipulating, analysing, and visualizing the massive data from multiagency, has opened new avenues for these technologies to be adopted in disaster management. Taking this into consideration, it leads to achieving disaster management objectives in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) which to reduce or minimize the exposure to hazards, lessened vulnerability of people and property, wise emergency preparation, and enhanced preparedness for an unfavourable situation. This paper aims to make a systematic review of literature in highlighting the significant potential of the GIS and remote sensing, integrating the aspect relevant to disasters socially and physically that helps in forming a comprehensive disaster management operation to reduce the vulnerability and strengthen the resilience to disaster. Accordingly, the paper has presented the outcomes and review of several researchers concerning the implementation of GIS and remote sensing in disaster management, specifically on disaster risk reduction.

Precision Oliviculture: Research Topics, Challenges, and Opportunities—A Review

Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been an increase in the agricultural area devoted to olive growing and in the consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). The continuous change in cultivation techniques implemented poses new challenges to ensure environmental and economic sustainability. In this context, precision oliviculture (PO) is having an increasing scientific interest and impact on the sector. Its implementation depends on various technological developments: sensors for local and remote crop monitoring, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), equipment and machinery to perform site-specific management through variable rate application (VRA), implementation of geographic information systems (GIS), and systems for analysis, interpretation, and decision support (DSS). This review provides an overview of the state of the art of technologies that can be employed and current applications and their potential. It also discusses the challenges and possible solutions and implementations of future technologies such as IoT, unmanned ground vehicles (UGV), and machine learning (ML).

The path for the institutionalization of CIM in urban management and planning: a systematic literature review

Managing the urban space is a challenge with increasing complexity, among other reasons, because of the advances of information and communication technologies. The treatment of information technologies as human artifacts carrying social meanings is not new, and it has been occurring naturally in studies on Geographic Information System (GIS), Building Information Modeling (BIM). Between these two technologies, the concept of City Information Modeling (CIM) emerges from the adjustment of scale and semantics. The proficiency of institutional theory in understanding the political behavior of cities and evaluating from broad political processes to particular organizational processes of innovation is also not new. We aim to identify and examine publications on the adoption and implementation of BIM and GIS that use institutional theory to support their methods, discussions, and conclusions, intending to confront explanations of political and technological behavior in the implementation of these two tools that allow obtaining basic knowledge for implement CIM systems. Results show that external isomorphic pressures have received significant attention, overshadowing institutional theory's potential to look at issues from the perception of locally situated individuals. The conclusion is that institutional studies for implementing GIS and BIM can contribute to methodological and analytical frameworks for advances in CIM.

IT Tools for Managing Ecological Hazards

The development of modern IT tools is a key vector of development in the management of natural hazards and geosciences. Thanks to the creation and implementation of geographic information systems (GIS) and technologies, monitoring of the area is greatly facilitated and the accounting of natural resources becomes streamlined. Geoinformation systems allow to take into account the social and environmental situation, accurately determining the qualitative and quantitative characteristics, structure, and location of objects. This allows the authorities at different levels to develop social infrastructure most effectively and correctly locate objects of it. In addition, geographic information systems are very effective for determining the location of an object. The requested information is provided in the form of detailed maps with additional details in texts, graphs, and diagrams. GIS tools are not a single program, but a package of programs, they have different interfaces and capabilities of working with data. Usually, the one that is best suited for the task is selected from this software package. An example of the choice of effective tools and related research in work with BigGeoData are presented in the article about aero monitoring use case.

Implementation of Geographic Information System for District and City Poverty Data Distribution Using the Rational Unified Process in West Java

Poverty is a fundamental problem that several districts and cities have, especially in West Java province. One important aspect to support the Poverty Reduction Strategy is the availability of poverty data that is accurate and on target with good visualization so that it can facilitate the data analysis process. A website-based Geographic Information System is the right solution for mapping the distribution of poverty data. Making this website using software development methods and the Rational Unified Process (RUP) with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) modeling language tool. For the maps, making process using Quantum GIS software and database storage using PostgreSQL. This website is expected to make it easier for the public to find the latest information and analyze poverty data, especially in districts and cities in West Java.

GIS-based and Naïve Bayes for nitrogen soil mapping in Lendah, Indonesia

Rice or Oryza sativa L. is the staple food of Indonesian society. Currently, the demand for rice in Indonesia is increasing, while the level of rice production is decreasing. Therefore, alternative technologies are needed to assist the community in increasing rice production. One of the important factors in the growth of rice is the quality of the soil that contains high levels of nitrogen for photosynthesis, protein formation, acid formation, and accelerating plant growth. This research was applied for soil nitrogen mapping with a smart prototype using the TCS3200 sensor combined with Naive Bayes algorithm and GIS (Geographical information systems). This system is carried through the Wemos D1 Mini microcontroller of TCS3200 sensor for reading data and sending the data to the web ceerduad.com. Geographical information systems (GIS) was developed to mapping area and to obtain training data for the Naïve Bayes Algorithm which the researcher took 20 soil samples in Lendah sub-district. From the experiment results, a prototype of soil nitrogen content using the TCS3200 sensor can measure soil nitrogen levels with an accuracy of 87.5% and sending the sensor data to the web server. Implementation of GIS in this research was successfully mapping low, medium, and high levels of nitrogen.

Forest Fire Spreading Using Free and Open-Source GIS Technologies

Forest fires are one of the most dangerous events, causing serious land and environmental degradation. Indeed, besides the loss of a huge quantity of plant species, the effects of fires can go far beyond: desertification, increased risk of landslides, soil erosion, death of animals, etc. For these reasons, mathematical models able to predict fire spreading are needed in order to organize and optimize the extinguishing interventions during fire emergencies. This work presents a new system to simulate and predict the movement of the fire front based on free and open source Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies and the Rothermel surface fire spread model, with the adjustments made by Albini. We describe the mathematical models used, provide an overview of the GIS design and implementation, and present the results of some simulations at Etna volcano (Sicily, Italy), characterized by high geomorphological heterogeneity, and where the native flora and fauna may be preserved and perpetuated. The results consist of raster maps representing the progress times of the fire front starting from an ignition point and as a function of the topography and wind directions. The reliability of results is strictly affected by the correct positioning of the fire ignition point, by the accuracy of the topography that describes the morphology of the territory, and by the setting of the meteorological conditions at the moment of the ignition and propagation of the fire.

Assessing Geospatial Technology Implementation Capacity for Natural Resource Management Networks: A Proposed Framework

Using the U.S. National Trails System (NTS), we examined the adoption and implementation of geospatial technologies for natural resource management (NRM). Technology adoption is the decision to use geographic information systems (GIS), whereby implementation represents the delivery of that technical system. We used soft technology, or the human characteristics of user skill and experience, to understand the capacity for delivery of the technical system across the network. The inter-organizational structure of geographically dispersed network members, characteristic of the NTS, provided opportunity to evaluate and compare GIS use and users for NRM. We inventoried GIS adoption and implementation for 23 trail network groups to produce a geospatial technology profile (GTP) of the NTS. Based on the GTP, we developed a framework to calculate an implementation capacity index (ICI) for each network, and then compared network capacity to the level of user engagement (application intricacy) deployed. Results show that higher implementation capacity is not indicative of higher levels of user engagement. Outcomes demonstrate the value of geocollaborative tool evaluations, highlighting the benefits of an assessment framework based on type and use of GIS platform. As an advantage in the process of evaluation, our proposed framework assists networks with implementation strategies, balancing user abilities and mapping capabilities. Additionally, the proposed framework provides a foundation to refine GIS implementation assessment for NRM networks. Understanding the range of GIS technologies and applications used by multiple, geographically dispersed networks can further inform development and deployment strategies that mitigate barriers to successful GIS implementation in inter-organizational scenarios.

Safeguarding Portuguese traditional glazed tile cultural heritage with GIS

The Portuguese word for traditional glazed tile is “azulejo” and derives from the Arabic “azuleicha”, meaning ‘small polished stone’. Deeply embedded in Portugal’s history and culture, there are countless valuable examples of traditional glazed tiles all around the country that are a significant part of the Portuguese cultural heritage and must be safeguarded and protected. In recent years there has been an increased demand for individual tiles and panels by tourist, leading to a serious national problem not only with the tiles’ theft, but also with the built environment dilapidation. This paper introduces the role that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can play in the preservation and safeguard of traditional Portuguese glazed tile heritage, specifically on the record of these architectural elements. This technology is worldwide used to locate, inventory, manage and support heritage preservation, providing local authorities with a tool to manage tile architectural heritage interventions, enhance tourism purposes and preventing theft and illegal sale. The presented work results from a partnership between the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and Covilhã Municipality (Portugal) for the inventory of the city tile heritage. Record information sheets were developed with relevant information about the location, cultural, historic and photographic tile data. The information collected from 70 tile works was used to develop a GIS tool for glazed tile coated building facades, decorative glazed tile wall panels and toponymical glazed tile plates. The results of the first stage of GIS implementation were validated by both the research team and the municipality, foreseeing its expansion and daily use in the management of traditional Portuguese glazed tile heritage.

Potential Infiltration Determination in Areas of Influence of the Zona Bananera Aquifer in Northern Colombia

Through the implementation of geographic information systems (GIS) and images of the study area obtained by remote sensors, the curve number method (NC) was implemented in this research, in order to determine potential recharge zones in two micro-basins in the aquifer region called Zona Bananera, located in the department of Magdalena in Northern Colombia. Potential infiltration of the area was estimated and the hydrological response for precipitation events with different return periods was evaluated. The predominant hydrological soil groups were found to be A and B, with 77.4% (84115.2 ha) in the Sevilla River micro-basin and 81.6% (7466.1 ha) in La Aguja micro-basin. The Sevilla River micro-basin showed both the best water regulation and enhancement of the infiltration process, evidenced by the existence of low as well as medium values ​​of curve number and potential surface runoff. The highest values ​​of potential runoff were in the middle and lower part of the micro-basins, where there are extensive areas covered with banana crops; indicating that anthropic intervention is a determining factor in the area’s hydrological response. Under current conditions, the micro-basins show a minimal risk of erosive processes for rainfall with return periods of less than 5 years, due to runoff occurrence of less than 100 mm. Within the study area, it was found that approximately 3380 hectares show favorable conditions to contribute to the recharge of the Zona Bananera aquifer, making it a strategic conservation area.
