Quantum-coherence-assisted dynamical phase transition in the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

Quantum coherence will undoubtedly play a fundamental role in understanding the dynamics of quantum many-body systems; therefore, to be able to reveal its genuine contribution is of great importance. In this paper, we focus our discussions on the one-dimensional transverse field quantum Ising model initialized in the coherent Gibbs state, and investigate the effects of quantum coherence on dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT). After quenching the strength of the transverse field, the effects of quantum coherence are studied using Fisher zeros and the rate function of the Loschmidt echo. We find that quantum coherence not only recovers DQPT destroyed by thermal fluctuations, but also generates some entirely new DQPTs, which are independent of the equilibrium quantum critical point. We also find that the Fisher zero cutting the imaginary axis is not sufficient to generate DQPT because it also requires the Fisher zeros to be tightly bound close enough to the neighborhood of the imaginary axis. It can be manifested that DQPTs are rooted in quantum fluctuations. This work reveals new information on the fundamental connection between quantum critical phenomena and quantum coherence.

Supervising criminalised women in the community in England and Wales: A brief history of (un)changing attitudes

AbstractThere has not been a specific history of supervising women in the community. This article, therefore, describes the early neglect of work with women and the period of change from the 1970s when women became more visible and the criminal justice system's response to them began to face scrutiny. It posits the story against the background of increased awareness of gender discrimination and efforts to reduce the use of imprisonment by addressing women's criminogenic and social needs through community‐based supervision. It juxtaposes innovative work initiated by practitioners and managers to years of unfulfilled policy promises. An essential part of the story is the attempt to integrate feminist perspectives into policy and practice at a time of organisational and political turbulence. It concludes that our increased understanding of criminalised women presents the opportunity of breaking the frustrating cycle of governmental ‘enthusiasm‐disillusion‐indifference’ and making a genuine contribution to equality and social justice.

ESG disclosures, green innovation, and greenwashing: All for sustainable development?

AbstractAs stakeholder concerns about corporate sustainability intensify, greenwashing—where companies deceptively report their environmental performance for short‐term economic gain—poses a significant threat to long‐term sustainability, making it crucial to explore effective ways to curb this practice. Using data from 1,270 Chinese listed companies from 2009 to 2019, this study constructs two‐way fixed effects and moderating effects models to explore the crucial role of green innovation in curbing greenwashing. Green innovation not only reduces the incentives for greenwashing, but also makes a genuine contribution to environmental protection, thus promoting a “win‐win” scenario for both sustainability and corporate development. Moreover, the positive impact of green innovation on curbing greenwashing can be significantly amplified by easing financial constraints and enhancing firms’ risk‐taking capabilities to foster a stable financial environment, as well as by strengthening the governance structure through increased gender diversity and environmental background among managers. Heterogeneity tests show that this pathway is particularly effective in companies with heavy pollution and higher economic performance. The research findings help to formulate more effective management strategies and incentive mechanisms to reduce greenwashing and achieve sustainable development.

Business-based and Ethical Assessments of CSR Efficiency

The paper aims to assess the effect of CSR on the performance of transnational corporations. The theoretical aspects of social responsibility and its relationship with the results of the activities of transnational corporations were highlighted based on the literature review. The empirical studies aimed at assessing the effect of social responsibility on the performance results of enterprises were analysed and systematised. The findings of the empirical studies showed that CSR has an impact on the operational and financial results of transnational corporations. Ethical considerations are also discussed, especially with respect to the issue of genuine social contribution versus greenwashing.

Underwater Acoustic Camouflage by Wettability Transition on Laser Textured Superhydrophobic Metasurfaces

AbstractThe superhydrophobicity of submerged surfaces typically pertains to the trapped air film at the liquid–solid interface, subject to wettability transitions from a Cassie–Baxter state to more unstable states that gradually collapse to high retention regimes, which are energetically more favorable. In this work, the dynamic evolution of those transient metastable states is correlated to the underwater acoustic performance of laser textured superhydrophobic surfaces, resolving the dependence of the ultrasound spectral response with the immersion time to capture the genuine contribution of the hierarchical subwavelength morphology, regardless of the air layer effects. Acoustic wave attenuation of the incident ultrasound energy is extensively quantified in transmission, accounting for instantaneous broadband sound blocking (>30 dB) within the spectral range 0.5–1.5 MHz. As a result of the air layer detachment with the immersion time, transmission coefficients increase accordingly, while acoustic fields in reflection unexpectedly evolve toward stealthiness and naïve acoustic camouflage, mostly ascribable to dissipative mechanisms at air layer interfaces. The intrinsic decay of the air layer effect is tentatively determined at different frequencies, since quantitative understanding of the transient lifetime governing underwater surface wettability is critical to design stable superhydrophobic character of laser induced subwavelength metastructures on the most promising acoustic materials – from eco‐friendly natural to artificial.

Virtual Power Plants: Challenges, Opportunities, and Profitability Assessment in Current Energy Markets

The arrival of virtual power plants (VPPs) marks important progress in the energy sector, providing optimistic solutions to the increasing need for energy flexibility, resilience, and improved energy systems’ integration. VPPs harness several characteristics to bring together distributed energy resources (DERs), resulting in economic gains and improved power grid reliability. Nevertheless, VPPs encounter major challenges when it comes to engaging in energy markets, mainly because there is no all-encompassing policy and regulatory framework specifically designed to accommodate their unique characteristics. This underscores the necessity for research endeavours to develop more advanced methods and structures for the long-term viability of VPPs. To address this concern, the study advocates for the implementation of a multi-aspect framework (MAF) as a systematic approach to thoroughly examine each aspect of virtual power plants (VPPs). A STEEP (social, technological, environmental, economic, and political) analytical tool is utilized to evaluate the challenges, opportunities, and benefits of a VPP in the existing energy markets. The proposed approach highlights important factors and actions that need to be taken to tackle the challenges related to VPP’ entry into energy markets. This study suggests that further support is required to promote the fast and widespread adoption of long-term VPP implementations. For this reason, a more favourable policy and regulatory framework based on social, technological, economic, environmental, and policy considerations is necessary to realize the genuine contributions of VPPs.

Preface

The purpose of the three-day 2023 2nd International Conference on Acoustics, Fluid Mechanics and Engineering (AFME 2023), held during November 17th to 19th, 2023 in Nanjing, China, was to create a timely forum for multi-disciplinary discussions related to the recent developments on acoustics, fluid mechanics and engineering.Highly eventful program of the Conference, the list of well-established organizations-participants and devoted engagement of many colleagues throughout all the stages of the Conference preparation instill confidence in practical importance of mutual initiative. As usual, the program of the meeting mainly consisted of plenary speeches, invited speeches, oral presentations and poster presentations, discussing significant problems facing technologies related to areas of acoustics, fluid mechanics and engineering, proposing innovative ideas and approaches to solution of the problems, and considering new possibilities of application and development of cutting-edge technology.In the framework of experimental and theoretical approaches, the Conference gathered 150 delegates from all over the world and addressed a number of highly relevant aspects of acoustics, fluid mechanics and engineering. Covering topics on Acoustic Materials, Hydrodynamic Acoustics, Ultrasonics, Physical Chemical Hydrodynamics, Hydromechanical Hydrodynamics, Engineering Fluid Mechanics, etc., the selected contributions of this special issue provide guidance for future interdisciplinary developments. In this way, the multi-scale aspects of acoustics, fluid mechanics and engineering should be considered.We received various manuscripts of invited papers and other contributions presented at the Conference. All of these papers have gone through a rigorous peer review process and are collected in this volume. Does entanglement enhance single-molecule pulsed biphoton spectroscopy?

Abstract It depends. For a single molecule interacting with one mode of a biphoton probe, we show that the spectroscopic information has three contributions, only one of which is a genuine two-photon contribution. When all the scattered light can be measured, solely this contribution exists and can be fully extracted using unentangled measurements. Furthermore, this two-photon contribution can, in principle, be matched by an optimised but unentangled single-photon probe. When the matter system spontaneously emits into inaccessible modes, an advantage due to entanglement can not be ruled out. In practice, time-frequency entanglement does enhance spectroscopic performance of the oft-studied weakly-pumped spontaneous parametric down conversion (PDC) probes. For two-level systems and coupled dimers, more entangled PDC probes yield more spectroscopic information, even in the presence of emission into inaccessible modes. Moreover, simple, unentangled measurements can capture between 60% and 90% of the spectroscopic information. We thus establish that biphoton spectroscopy using source-engineered PDC probes and unentangled measurements can provide tangible quantum enhancement. Our work underscores the intricate role of entanglement in single-molecule spectroscopy using quantum light.

Quantifying quantumness in three-flavor neutrino oscillations

We characterize quantum correlations encoded in a three-flavor oscillating neutrino system by using both plane-wave and wave-packet approach. By means of the Complete Complementarity Relations (CCR) we study the trade-off of predictability, local coherence and non-local correlations in terms of the relevant parameters, chosen from recent neutrino experiments. Although the CCR describe very well the contributions associated to bipartite correlations, an attempt of promoting these relations to include the genuine tri-partite contributions in the pure-state case leads to a not completely meaningful result. However, we provide an analysis of the genuine tripartite contributions both for the pure instance and for the mixed case, independently of CCR.

Multiple soft-photon emission at next-to-leading power to all orders

This paper derives a next-to-leading power (NLP) soft theorem for multi-photon emission to all orders in the electromagnetic coupling constant, generalising the leading-power theorem of Yennie, Frautschi, and Suura. Working in the QED version of heavy-quark effective theory, multi-emission amplitudes are shown to reduce to single- and double-radiation contributions only. Single soft-photon emission, in turn, is described by the recent all-order extension of the Low-Burnett-Kroll theorem, where the tree-level formula is supplemented with a one-loop exact soft function. The same approach is used in this article to prove that the genuine double-emission contribution is tree-level exact. As a validation and a first non-trivial application of the multi-photon theorem, the real-real-virtual electron-line corrections to muon-electron scattering are calculated at NLP in the soft limit.

Multi-affiliation: a growing problem of scientific integrity

The past decade has witnessed a substantial increase in the number of affiliations listed by individual authors of scientific papers. Some authors now list an astonishing number of institutions, sometimes exceeding 20, 30, or more. This trend raises concerns regarding the genuine scientific contributions these authors make at each institution they claim to be affiliated with. To address this issue, our study conducted a comprehensive regional analysis of the growth of both domestic and international multi-affiliations over the past decade. Our findings reveal certain countries that have experienced an abnormal surge in international multi-affiliation authorships. Coupled with the high numbers of affiliations involved, this emphasizes the need for careful scrutiny of the actual scientific contributions made by these authors and the importance of safeguarding the integrity of scientific output and networks.

The illusion of meritocracy

Meritocracy claims to reward the meritorious with more resources, thereby achieving social efficiency and justice in a level playground. This article argues that the rise of meritocracy in a society is the institutional consequence of adopting progressive humanism, an ideal-type worldview that advocates the harmonious co-realization of individual achievement and social contribution. However, meritocracy is a self-defeating illusion because, even in a level playground, it only rewards conspicuous and wasteful display of ‘merit’ rather than genuine contributions to society. Similar to the promise of an afterlife to Catholicism, the illusion of meritocracy constitutes an indispensable theodicy to progressive humanism. For societies holding such worldviews, meritocracy is a necessary illusion that cannot be dispelled by institutional reforms or political movements.

Comparative Perspectives: Exploring Workflow Efficiencies of BIM and CAD in 3D Modelling

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a new technology to make genuine project contributions, especially in the industry, architecture, and construction sectors. However, in practice, many professional workforces choose computer-aided design (CAD) as the primary technology, which has formerly appeared and is further comprehensible. Building Information Modelling offered different perspectives on purpose to facilitate designers or architects to expertise in various fields. Building Information Modelling (BIM) contains informative data that can use some expertise as a solution to make the occupation more coherent. This research aims to comprehend the workflow differences between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) system technology. We collated methods by reviewing some literature and reviewing case studies. Then, we compare the workflow and conclude which is more effective for architectural design. In this research, we explore the difference between BIM's workflow and Cad's workflow to know which is more effective. So, we conclude and can apply the technology appropriately in the workflow needed so that it can simplify the workflow.

К вопросу о роли великого князя Александра Михайловича в зарождении отечественных военно-воздушных сил

Introduction. The article is devoted to the analysis of the contribution of Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich to the birth of the Russian Air Force. The authors emphasize that despite the concealment or minimization of the role of this outstanding statesman in Soviet historiography, he was able to achieve the most important task for the defense capability of the Russian Empire – the creation of his own aviation and the system of training aviation specialists, thanks to his personal abilities and perseverance. The relevance of the published materials is determined both in general to the history of the emergence and the first years of the development of domestic aviation, and to the imperial house of the Romanovs, in particular. Materials and methods. Thanks to the analysis of special scientific literature, as well as periodicals of the early 20th century, it was possible to conclude that Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich made a great personal contribution to the development of Russian military aviation. This was facilitated by the use of the historical-genetic method, which allows us to consider the early stage of the history of the Air Force of our country. Results. Like most other representatives of the Romanov dynasty who did not occupy the throne, Alexander Mikhailovich devoted his life to serving for the good of the Fatherland. His military education and love of the sea attracted the young Grand Duke to serve in the Navy. Intellectual and creative abilities allowed him to make a number of discoveries, as well as leave behind several scientific studies in the field of navigation and shipping. However, the Grand Duke made a genuine contribution at the state level to the birth of military aviation, being carried away abroad by a new type of transport. Having correctly realized the role of the Air Force in protecting state borders, for a number of years, through his multifaceted activities, he led the country to create its own Military Air Fleet. Conclusion. To date, there is no doubt about the significant contribution of Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich to the birth of the Russian Air Force, which was recognized, including officially, at the state level in 2012.

Gravitating anisotropic merons and squashed spheres in the three-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory

We construct the first analytic examples of self-gravitating anisotropic merons in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions. The gauge field configurations have different meronic parameters along the three Maurer-Cartan 1-forms and they are topologically nontrivial as the Chern-Simons invariant is nonzero. The corresponding backreacted metric is conformally a squashed three-sphere. The amount of squashing is related to the degree of anisotropy of the gauge field configurations that we compute explicitly in different limits of the squashing parameter. Moreover, the spectrum of the Dirac operator on this background is obtained explicitly for spin-1/2 spinors in the fundamental representation of SU(2), and the genuine non-Abelian contributions to the spectrum are identified. The physical consequences of these results are discussed.

Performance Analysis of Routing Protocol Using Trust-Based Hybrid FCRO-AEPO Optimization Techniques

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) offer numerous benefits and have been used in different applications. MANETs are dynamic peer-to-peer networks that use multi-hop data transfer without the need for-existing infrastructure. Due to their nature, for secure communication of mobile nodes, they need unique security requirements in MANET. In this work, a Hybrid Firefly Cyclic Rider Optimization (FCRO) algorithm is proposed for Cluster Head (CH) selection, it efficiently selects the CH and improves the network efficiency. The Ridge Regression Classification algorithm is presented in this work to sense the malicious nodes in the network and the data is transmitted using trusted Mobile nodes for the QoS enactment metric improvement. A trust-based routing protocol (TBRP) is introduced utilizing the Atom Emperor Penguin Optimization (AEPO) algorithm, it identifies the best-forwarded path to moderate the routing overhead problem in MANET. The planned method is implemented using Matlab software and the presentation metrics are packet delivers ratio, packet loss ratio (PLR), routing overhead, throughput, end-to-end delay (E2ED), transmission delay, energy consumption and network lifetime. The suggested AEPO algorithm is compared with the prevailing PSO-GA, TID-CMGR, and MFFA. The AEPO algorithm’s performance is approximately 1.5%, 3.2%, 2%, 3%, and 4% higher than the existing methods for PLR, packet delivers ratio, throughput, and E2ED and network lifetime. The sender nodes can increase their information transmission rates and reduce delays in appreciation of this evaluation. Additionally, the suggested technique has a perfect benefit in terms of demonstrating the genuine contribution of distinct nodes to trust evaluation (TE).

Developing a national strategy of consumer and community involvement (CCI) for women’s health research

ObjectiveTo develop a consumer and community involvement (CCI) strategy for the Women’s Health Research, Translation and Impact Network (WHRTN), an initiative of the Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA).Type of programA national network, comprising representatives from 14 nationally-accredited research translation centres that aims to embed CCI at a systems level, to improve equity and health outcomes across women’s health.MethodsA CCI Sub-Committee of WHRTN was established, chaired by a Consumer Advisor/Advocate. This committee invited both internal and external Consumer Advisor/Advocates to participate in a workshop, to guide the development of WHRTN’s CCI Strategy in women’s health research.ResultsA CCI Strategy document was written with input from workshop attendees and leading academics in women’s health and has now been implemented into WHRTN, informing all aspect of the Network’s programs and activities.DiscussionBroad and early consumer involvement can facilitate meaningful partnerships between researchers and community, and enable genuine consumer contributions to research across strategy development, priority setting and undertaking research. Appropriate finances and time need to be allocated for CCI, with training in CCI a key enabler for its effective implementation.

A Benchmark Dataset to Distinguish Human-Written and Machine-Generated Scientific Papers

As generative NLP can now produce content nearly indistinguishable from human writing, it is becoming difficult to identify genuine research contributions in academic writing and scientific publications. Moreover, information in machine-generated text can be factually wrong or even entirely fabricated. In this work, we introduce a novel benchmark dataset containing human-written and machine-generated scientific papers from SCIgen, GPT-2, GPT-3, ChatGPT, and Galactica, as well as papers co-created by humans and ChatGPT. We also experiment with several types of classifiers—linguistic-based and transformer-based—for detecting the authorship of scientific text. A strong focus is put on generalization capabilities and explainability to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these detectors. Our work makes an important step towards creating more robust methods for distinguishing between human-written and machine-generated scientific papers, ultimately ensuring the integrity of scientific literature.

Overcoming harmonic hurdles: Genuine beta-band rhythms vs. contributions of alpha-band waveform shape

Abstract Beta-band activity in the human cortex as recorded with noninvasive electrophysiology is of diverse origin. In addition to genuine beta-rhythms, there are numerous nonsinusoidal alpha-band rhythms present in the human brain, which will result in harmonic beta-band peaks. This type of activity has different temporal and response dynamics than genuine beta-rhythms. Here, it is argued that in the analysis of higher-frequency rhythms, the relationship to lower-frequency rhythms needs to be clarified. Only in that way we can arrive at strong, methodologically valid interpretations of potential functional roles and generative mechanisms of neural oscillations.

Can We Observe Nonperturbative Vacuum Shifts in Cavity QED?

We address the fundamental question of whether or not it is possible to achieve conditions under which the coupling of a single dipole to a strongly confined electromagnetic vacuum can result in nonperturbative corrections to the dipole's ground state. To do so we consider two simplified, but otherwise rather generic cavity QED setups, which allow us to derive analytic expressions for the total ground-state energy and to distinguish explicitly between purely electrostatic and genuine vacuum-induced contributions. Importantly, this derivation takes the full electromagnetic spectrum into account while avoiding any ambiguities arising from an adhoc mode truncation. Our findings show that while the effect of confinement perse is not enough to result in substantial vacuum-induced corrections, the presence of high-impedance modes, such as plasmons or engineered LC resonances, can drastically increase these effects. Therefore, we conclude that with appropriately designed experiments it is at least in principle possible to access a regime where light-matter interactions become nonperturbative.
