An enhanced fast fundamental frequency estimator for three-phase electric aircraft grid

This article proposes a robust and enhanced three-phase fundamental frequency estimation algorithm for the electric aircraft grid. Unlike conventional frequency-locked loops, the digital signal processing technique-based frequency estimator proposed relies on the storage of five consecutive samples of the fundamental grid voltage signal. Furthermore, the ability to successfully operate at a low sampling frequency, i.e. 8 kHz, makes it sufficiently attractive as regards reducing the memory storage in a low-cost real-time controller. The proposed frequency estimator can additionally eliminate the negative effects of the DC-offset and the fundamental negative sequence components present in the grid signal without any additional effort. Also, the tuning efforts are reduced for the frequency variation range of 350–900 Hz owing to the existence of a single tuning gain parameter. The proposed algorithm has also been found to have a fast dynamic response, which has been experimentally validated through the use of a real-time digital controller.

Performance Enhancement of QT1-PLL by using cascaded filtering stage

As one of the state-of-the-art grid voltage synchronization techniques, Quasi-type-1 structure based phase locked loop (QT1-PLL) achieves an excellent detection performance when only odd-order harmonics needs to be eliminated by Moving average filter (MAF). Nonetheless, when it is necessary for MAF to eliminate the fundamental negative sequence component, more delay will be introduced to the PLL, reducing its stability. The transient response speed of QT1-PLL needs to be reduced to ensure stability, which may be unacceptable for grid-connected power converters. To deal with this situation, this paper proposes a cascaded filtering stage with small delay. The suggested filtering stage is composed of second-order lead compensator, notch filter, first-order lead compensator and MAF, which is integrated in QT1-PLL. Compared with the traditional QT1-PLL, the proposed PLL has faster transient response speed and higher detection accuracy. The simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the suggested filtering stage.

Stator Winding Fault Diagnosis Method Based on Dc Side Current of Inverter

This paper analyzes the influence of the fundamental negative sequence component of the grid voltage on the output voltage of the variable frequency power supply, and points out that the fundamental negative sequence component of the grid voltage will not generate the fundamental negative sequence current component in the stator current of the induction motor, so when the stator winding fault is diagnosed, the influence of the negative sequence voltage of the grid does not need to be compensated. Based on the characteristic that the fundamental negative sequence current component in the stator current is converted into two times of the inverter output frequency component in the DC side current of the inverter, a stator fault diagnosis method based on the DC side current of the inverter is proposed. The method of connecting the short-circuit resistance between the two phases of the motor is used to simulate the nonmetallic short-circuit fault of the stator coil. The experimental results show that this method does not need to compensate the negative sequence voltage, and only needs to collect one current signal, and the algorithm is relatively simple, which is a simple and effective method.

Improved Fundamental Frequency Estimator for Three-Phase Application

This letter reports a digital signal processing based frequency estimation technique that relies on the storage of fundamental three-phase grid voltage samples. Unlike phase-locked loop algorithms, the proposed algorithm does not require the phase error information when estimating the grid frequency. Moreover, only four consecutive samples of the fundamental orthogonal components are required in order to estimate the deviation in the grid frequency. The proposed scheme is facilitated with an inherent nonadaptive comb filtering behavior in order to reject the dc offset and harmonics while attaining a good immunity to voltage sag and the fundamental negative sequence component. Additionally, the off-nominal harmonic rejection capability of the proposed frequency estimator is enhanced by using a postfiltering method. The experimental validations reported in this study demonstrate that the proposed frequency estimator is suitable for three-phase grid applications.

An Improved Hybrid Prefiltered Open-Loop Algorithm for Three-Phase Grid Synchronization

In this article, a robust three-phase grid synchronization technique has been proposed for rapid detection of fundamental frequency, phase, and amplitude. The widely accepted phase locked-loop (PLL) algorithms possess complex architectures and require tedious tuning process for attaining a good stability margin. In order to surpass the shortfalls of PLL algorithms, a computationally efficient, stable, and open-loop scheme has been reported in this article. A novel two consecutive samples based frequency estimator is developed for fast detection of the fundamental frequency. Moreover, an efficient hybrid prefiltering approach is implemented based on the demodulation of the grid voltage signal. Additionally, the combination of a delayed signal cancellation operator and a band-pass filter allowed rapid rejection of dc-offset and harmonics, respectively. In the event of a grid voltage imbalance, the instantaneous symmetrical component method is a rescuer for the rejection of the fundamental negative sequence component without any delay. Subsequently, overall transient response time of the scheme is observed to be improved. On the other hand, the fundamental positive sequence component facilitates the estimation of amplitude and phase angle information. Importantly, the dynamic performance of the proposed scheme has been experimentally validated in presence of various grid disturbances.

Symmetric-component decoupled control of grid-connected inverters for voltage unbalance correction and harmonic compensation

In this paper, a strategy is investigated for control of distributed generators to additionally support the local grid on top of conventional electricity generation. The strategy decouples unbalance and harmonic compensation in the phase sequences and the frequency domain for a grid-connected inverter with local unbalanced and distorting loads. Unlike conventional control schemes for grid-connected converters, the proposed strategy is designed to be sequence-asymmetric for the purpose of unbalanced and harmonic local voltage correction. A frequency-domain Norton equivalent model is derived to illustrate the working principle of the strategy. Accordingly, it is shown that following a frequency-domain decoupled method the fundamental positive-sequence, the harmonic symmetrical sequence, the fundamental zero-sequence and the fundamental negative-sequence components can be regulated independently. Consistent to the model analysis, experiments validate the reduction of the local voltage total harmonic distortion and unbalanced factor when the converter is programmed for both harmonic sinking and voltage unbalance correction.

Sliding-Mode Observer Based Voltage-Sensorless Model Predictive Power Control of PWM Rectifier Under Unbalanced Grid Conditions

A sliding-mode grid voltage observer (SMGVO) is proposed and experimentally verified in this paper for voltage-sensorless operation under an unbalanced network. The fundamental positive sequence component (FPSC) and fundamental negative sequence component (FNSC) are inherently separated in the observer without employing any additional filters. Due to embedded filtering effect, high frequency chattering and harmonic ripples can be well suppressed. Additionally, dc components can be completely rejected. As a result, dc offset would not cause fundamental frequency oscillations in magnitude and frequency of the estimated FPSC and FNSC. Owing to the predictive ability of SMGVO, one-step delay can be directly compensated using state variables in the observer. By combining estimation and prediction into one stage, the designed SMGVO turns out to be a compact solution for finite-control-set model predictive power control without voltage sensors. Theoretical proof is derived to verify that FPSC and FNSC can be accurately estimated and separated. Experimental results obtained from a two-level PWM rectifier confirm the effectiveness of the whole control system.

Rapid Tracking of Grid Variables Using Prefiltered Synchronous Reference Frame PLL

For synchronization applications, synchronous reference frame (SRF) phase-locked loop (PLL) is widely deployed. Its performance is excellent when the input voltage consists of only fundamental positive sequence (FPS) component. If the grid voltage is unbalanced or polluted with harmonics and dc offset, its performance degrades. Many modifications were proposed to address this issue. However, the removal of dc offset and fundamental negative sequence (FNS) component without compromising the dynamic performance still remains a challenging task. To this end, this paper presents a rapid Type-1 SRF PLL scheme with preloop filtering stage for tracking the attributes of grid voltage FPS component. Fixed sampling period sliding discrete Fourier transform (SDFT) and instantaneous symmetrical components method are employed in the preloop stage. With this modification, the dc offset, harmonics and the FNS component are rejected and only the FPS component enters the PLL. As a result, transients vanish quickly. However, when the grid frequency drifts, SDFT causes amplitude and phase errors, and Type-1 PLL introduces a steady-state tracking error in phase. These errors are compensated with the help of an error correction criteria. Robustness and the improved transient response of the proposed scheme are demonstrated with an experimental study involving real-time controller board (dSPACE DS1104) and three-phase programmable power source.

Three-phase grid voltage synchronization using sinusoidal amplitude integrator in synchronous reference frame

Abstract Synchronization with the grid voltage is critical in the control of grid-connected power converters. Under unbalanced grid condition, the conventional synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL) does not work well due to the effect of the fundamental negative sequence component. This paper proposes a new synchronization method, the sinusoidal amplitude integrator based phase locked loop (SAI-based PLL), to efficiently eradicate the effect of the fundamental negative sequence component. As a result, it can accurately and quickly estimate the amplitude and phase angle of the fundamental components of grid voltages in unbalanced grid conditions. In addition, when dc offset and harmonics are contained in the grid voltage, a multi-SAI-based PLL method is developed to extract the synchronization signal. The proposed SAI-based PLL incorporates the sinusoidal amplitude integrator into the conventional SRF-PLL. Its operation is analyzed using the complex-vector notation. Simulation and experimental results on the performance of the proposed SAI-based PLL and comparison with other synchronization methods are presented.
