Design of distributed search engine system for apparel based on semantic Web services

According to the needs of supply-chain management in the environment of E-business,the authors analyzed the problems existing in the present search engine for apparel-goods and proposed a new distributed search engine for apparel goods based on semantic Web Services(WS),and then discussed its architecture.After introducing the apparel Ontology design model and the representation method based on Ontology Web Language(OWL),the basic functions of apparel search engine and WS synthesized in distributed environment were presented.Theoretical analysis and the designed prototype show that this search engine,based on apparel semantic tree,is much more efficient than full-text search engine when searching with multi-

Accessibility and findability of local e-government websites in the Czech Republic

This article focuses on the accessibility of local e-government web pages. Accessibility is herein considered in a broader perspective, taking also into account that information must be findable within the Internet through conventional fulltext search engines. Based on this assumption, an analysis of 39 local e-government websites in the Czech Republic was carried out in two testing periods (March 2006 and April 2008). The web pages were analysed both from a citizen’s point of view (with disadvantage due to disability or to technical equipment) and from the point of view of fulltext search engines. In the analysis of results, there is an overall evaluation and comparison between testing periods and recommendations for improvement of the current conditions.

Generic XML-based framework for metadata portals

We present a generic and flexible framework for building geoscientific metadata portals independent of content standards for metadata and protocols. Data can be harvested with commonly used protocols (e.g., Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) and metadata standards like DIF or ISO 19115. The new Java-based portal software supports any XML encoding and makes metadata searchable through Apache Lucene. Software administrators are free to define searchable fields independent of their type using XPath. In addition, by extending the full-text search engine (FTS) Apache Lucene, we have significantly improved queries for numerical and date/time ranges by supplying a new trie-based algorithm, thus, enabling high-performance space/time retrievals in FTS-based geo portals. The harvested metadata are stored in separate indexes, which makes it possible to combine these into different portals. The portal-specific Java API and web service interface is highly flexible and supports custom front-ends for users, provides automatic query completion (AJAX), and dynamic visualization with conventional mapping tools. The software has been made freely available through the open source concept.

Digital libraries (DLs) in general and technical or cultural preservation applications in particular offer a rich set of multimedia objects like audio, music, images, videos, and also 3D models. However, instead of handling these objects consistently as regular documents - in the same way we treat textual documents - most applications handle them differently. Considering that textual documents are only one media type among many, it's clear that this type of document is handled quite specially. A full-text search engine lets users retrieve a specific document based on its content - that is, one or more words that appear in it. Content-based retrieval of other media types is an active research area, and in the case of 3D documents, only pilot applications exist.

Keyword search makes it very convenient for document management system users to pick up documents they need, though, its effectiveness depends on the quality of indexes stored in backend database. Except well-trained user groups, you cannot expect the usefulness of keyword search because unsophisticated user groups hardly input valuable keywords during their operations. In this paper, I propose a yet another approach to register and retrieve usuful keywords of drawings stored in document control systems. The method enables you automatic keyword maintenance in backend database. This can be also applied to full-text search engines such as 'Namazu'. The tool developed in this research can be freely downloaded via Internet.

近年，大学図書館をはじめ一般の図書館においては，インターネット上で検索できるOPAC（WebOPAC）を導入し，情報サービスの拡充を図る機関が急増している。しかし多くの場合，それは図書館システムベンダーに依存しており，その導入やシステムの変更にあたっては多大なコストが必要となる。一方，オープンソースソフトウエアを利用したWebアーキテクチャを応用すれば，ほとんど経費をかけず，独自にカスタマイズが可能なWebOPACの構築が可能である。われわれは本稿において，フリーウエアである全文検索エンジン“Namazu”を利用した簡易WebOPACの開発と，同システムに付加したWebcat即時参照機能について紹介する。

Using Electronic Resources for a Thorough Nursing Literature Search

Integrating Web-Based Documents, Shared Knowledge Bases, and Information Retrieval for User Help

We describe a prototype system, IKARUS, with which we investigated the potential of integrating web-based documents, shared knowledge bases, and information retrieval for improving knowledge storage and retrieval. As an example, we discuss how to implement both a user manual and an online help system as one system. The following technologies are combined: a web-based design, a frame-based knowledge engine, use of an advanced full-text search engine, and simple techniques to control terminology. We have combined graphical browsing with several unusual forms of text retrieval—for example, to the sentence and paragraph level.
