Characteristics of retracted articles based on retraction data from online sources through February 2019

Purpose: Although retractions are commonly considered to be negative, the fact remains that they play a positive role in the academic community. For instance, retractions help scientific enterprise perform its self-correcting function and provide lessons for future researchers; furthermore, they represent the fulfillment of social responsibilities, and they enable scientific communities to offer better monitoring services to keep problematic studies in check. This study aims to provide a thorough overview of the practice of retraction in scientific publishing from the first incident to the present.Methods: We built a database using SQL Server 2016 and homemade artificial intelligence tools to extract and classify data sources including RetractionWatch, official publishers’ archives, and online communities into ready-to-analyze groups and to scan them for new data. After data cleaning, a dataset of 18,603 retractions from 1,753 (when the first retracted paper was published) to February 2019, covering 127 research fields, was established.Results: Notable retraction events include the rise in retracted articles starting in 1999 and the unusual number of retractions in 2010. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Elsevier, and Springer account for nearly 60% of all retracted papers globally, with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers contributing the most retractions, even though it is not the organization that publishes the most journals. Finally, reasons for retraction are diverse but the most common is “fake peer review”.Conclusion: This study suggests that the frequency of retraction has boomed in the past 20 years, and it underscores the importance of understanding and learning from the practice of retracting scientific articles.

Does CSR affect the cost of equity capital: Empirical evidence from the targeted poverty alleviation of listed companies in China.

Social responsibility fulfillment helps modern enterprises achieve sustainable development. Based on empirical data on China's A-share listed companies in 2013–2016, this paper examines the impact of corporate social responsibility performance on a company's financing costs from the perspective of targeted poverty alleviation. Specifically, we find that enterprises’ engagement in poverty alleviation social responsibility helps to reduce the cost of equity capital. The result is robust to using alternative indicators of the cost of equity capital, propensity score matching method, change model and sample removed financial sector. Furthermore, we find that the negative relationship between enterprises’ engagement in poverty relief and the cost of equity capital is mainly concentrated in private enterprises and in the central and eastern regions of China. Moreover, the negative relationship mainly exists after China’s listed companies were forced to disclose information on poverty alleviation. This paper also finds that institutional investors' shareholding plays a partial mediating role in this reduction effect and that enterprises’ poverty alleviation efforts help companies improve their financial performance and firm value. This study enriches the relevant literature on corporate social responsibility and the cost of equity capital and has reference value for corporate sustainable development. It also provides a theoretical basis for corporate poverty alleviation work in developing countries and the economic results of CSR.

In the context of Ukraine’s European integration aspirations, economic and political globalization, the rapid development of science and technology, the sociocultural role of the teacher significantly increases, since he is the guarantor of the future state, preparing new generations for the fulfillment of social responsibilities, and forms the culture of youth. That is why we consider it necessary to study historical experience and adapt the best pedagogical ideas of the past to modern conditions. The aim of the article was to study the experience of teacher training in the 50-60 years of the twentieth century and the definition of ideas that can be applied in modern times. Based on the study of archival materials, we came to the conclusion that the positive ideas that are relevant for our time are: the selection of the best for admission to study at pedagogical universities; the presence of a letter of recommendation from an educational institution, from a place of work or society; when entering a pedagogical university, give preference to those who have practical pedagogical experience. When organizing the educational process, preference was given to education and organization of collective work, which forms the ability to work in a team, and is relevant for our time. One of the directions in the training of teachers was to bring learning closer to the realities of the school. Lectures on the “Pedagogy” course were in large volume – 80 lecture hours. Among the shortcomings in the organization of the pedagogical process that are common for the past and present: the mismatch of the pedagogy program with the requirements of society, the need for continuous improvement of textbooks, methods, forms of work, methods teaching, the lack of a single generally accepted position on the definition of pedagogical concepts. However, problems with the lack of textbooks and methodological support are no longer relevant today due to the creation of the Internet network and electronic resources.

Identifying the driving factors of successful megaproject construction management: Findings from three Chinese cases

The construction of megaprojects has always resulted in extensive and long-term impacts on the society. However, the performance of megaproject management is poor, and improving it remains an urgent and necessary issue. Although many studies on megaproject success have been conducted, existing studies on the driving factors of successful megaproject construction are rather limited. Therefore, this study aims to systematically explore the key factors that can lead to successful megaproject construction management based on three cases: The Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, the Three Gorges Dam, and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Mixed research methods, such as literature review, case studies, and expert interviews, were used in this study. Consequently, 11 driving factors, namely, government support, public support, accumulation and application of technology and experience, development and innovation of technology, innovation and application of management system, organizational mode and structure, top management support, project culture, megaproject citizenship behavior, corporate reputation, and fulfillment of social responsibilities, were identified and grouped into five categories, namely, project environment, construction capabilities, organization, positive culture and behavior, and requirements for sustainable development. The contributions of this study lie in two aspects. First, the driving factors of successful megaproject construction are identified to deepen the understanding of industrial practitioners, assist them in focusing on key factors, and aid them in effectively managing megaprojects. Second, researchers could use the identified driving factors in conducting further empirical studies and apply them in future projects to enhance their chances of success.

Impact of External Audit Quality on Earnings Management in Marine Enterprises

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.With the rapid increase of marine resources and foreign trade, marine enterprises have shown a tendency to expand. Corporate management may whitewash its performance through earnings management, which is not conducive to the long-term development of marine enterprises. As third-party institutions, external audit can be used as an alternative to the internal control of marine enterprises to curb the earnings management of marine enterprises. Using marine enterprises as an example, this article aims to explore the effect of external audit quality on corporate earnings management. The results show that an external audit has an inhibitory effect on earnings management, which is mainly related to the quality of the external audit; the marine companies with high external audit quality have a stronger inhibitory effect on earnings management, and there is a more significant negative correlation between earnings management of high-quality audit teams and the fulfillment of social responsibility. The research findings provide a theoretical basis for exploring the relationship between external audit quality and earnings management.

Lie of the weak: Inconsistent corporate social responsibility activities of Chinese zombie firms

This study investigates the differences between zombie firms and non-zombie firms in corporate social responsibility activities such as reporting, disclosure and fulfillment. Using Chinese listing company data collected from 2009 to 2016, we apply a three stage model with a double Heckman correction to deal with potential self-selection/endogeneity bias and to measure the differences consistently. We found that zombie firms are less willing to release standalone corporate social responsibility reports than non-zombie firms. Among companies that release standalone corporate social responsibility reports, the corporate social responsibility disclosure of zombie firms is at least not worse than non-zombie firms, but the corporate social responsibility fulfillment is significantly lower. We conclude from this gap between disclosure and fulfillment to the hypocritical behavior of zombie firms, due to the absence of control in corporate social responsibility. We suggest that government should enhance supervision over zombie firms’ corporate social responsibility activities and subsidies towards them in order to lower their economic damage. Supplementary analyses provide some clues concerning the heterogeneity of inconsistence in term of external support characteristics, ownership and censorship which require further studies.

Applying Online Educational Technology to Foster Financial Literacy: Financial-Institution Leaders’ Insights

Financial literacy deficiency is a prevailing problem in United States raising the need for effective financial education. Financial-institution leaders can play a crucial role in promoting financial literacy with their practical experience and expertise. This article sheds new light on the application of online technology to promote financial literacy by exploring the perceptions of financial-institution leaders. Supported by Dewey’s pragmatic constructivist paradigm and the PEST conceptual framework, a qualitative inquiry research through in-depth telephone interviews with 20 leaders from banks and credit unions in Texas was conducted. The findings revealed some common ways to provide online financial literacy education, including website information posting, online financial calculators, external links, social media communication, and partnering with appropriate third parties. The financial leaders perceived that applying online technology would be an enlightening future direction especially for the millennial generation but face-to-face education would remain important. The opportunities included social responsibility fulfillment, corporate image strengthening, marketing, and favorable regulatory consideration. The challenges involved the human and financial resources constraints, IT support, lack of effective evaluation, and how to motivate online learning. Some leaders suggested the use of games, financial incentives, and innovative apps. The policy implications included increase in government support, partnership with schools, embracing financial literacy in the state test, and collaboration among financial leaders, regulators, educators, and policy makers to foster financial literacy for the benefits of the society.

Do Female Board Directors Promote Corporate Social Responsibility? An Empirical Study Based on the Critical Mass Theory

ABSTRACT Based on the critical mass theory, we study the relationship between the number and background characteristics of female directors and corporate social responsibility (CSR). We use the data of Chinese listed companies from 2011 to 2016. Empirical evidence shows that the number of female directors, the number of female independent directors, female directors’ educational background and monetary compensation upon the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility was not statistically significant. The age and the part-time ratio of female directors were positively correlated with the fulfillment of social responsibilities. The group test based on the “critical number“ in the critical mass theory did not show the changing effect of reaching the “critical number” in the critical mass theory, and the same conclusion was obtained by further testing in terms of the proportion of female directors. This article provides a new perspective for further exploring the board gender diversity and the role of female directors on decision-making, which may be better for companies to fulfill their social responsibilities.

Do peer firms affect corporate social performance?

Abstract This article addresses whether, which and when peer firms matter for the focal firm’s corporate social performance (CSP), to modify the underlying assumption among prior studies that firms invest in CSP in isolation. Building on institutional isomorphism theory, legitimacy theory and knowledge spillover theory, we argue that the focal firm learns from peers in dealing with stakeholder demands due to uncertainty, while legitimacy pressure and knowledge spillover could help cope with uncertainty. Meanwhile, different from the leader-follower model, the followers are more prone to be affected by the average CSP level, due to restricted resources and abilities. Lastly, the more the uncertainty level is, the more obvious mimicking behaviors can be observed. By employing the instrumental variables regression, these arguments have been supported. Our study contributes to the state-of-the-art corporate social performance literature by introducing a critical, albeit widely neglected explanatory variable. In addition, we advance scientific knowledge on the thus far under-researched question in literature of inter-organizational imitation, namely which firms are emulated. The conclusions based on China can also provide important implications for other emerging countries with great uncertainty and initial stage of social responsibility fulfillment.

The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Corporate Performance - Evidence From Listed Companies in the Sports Industry in China

Maximizing profits has always been the goal and principle pursued in a company’s development. Based on this so-called business principle, companies often blindly pursue economic interests, leaving behind environmental protection and even labor rights and consumer interests, which cause many negative externalities. With the continuous development of the society and the economy, the society no longer evaluates the corporate performance of a company based on its financial performance alone. The society now expects a company not only to improve its financial performance, but also fulfill its social responsibility obligations. However, a large number of companies in China do not put their social responsibility in place. The expenditures on environmental governance, the rights of employees and small/medium investors, along with the intensity of public charity donations, are still unqualified. While the society strongly encourages companies to fulfill their social responsibility, some other parties believe that fulfilling corporate social responsibility increases the cost of a company, which consequently has a negative impact on the financial performance of the company. As a result, whether there is a need for companies to fulfill social responsibility, whether the economic benefits and corporate social responsibility are mutually antagonistic, and how companies should balance their own operations, management and fulfillment of social responsibility, need to be further studied.As an important part of the H-industry, the sports industry has a positive effect on optimizing the industrial structure, expanding domestic demand, and promoting employment. It has developed into a new long-term point in promoting urban economic development. However, at present, there has been little research on the capital management of listed companies in the sports industry. Therefore, based on the Chinese market environment, this paper listed investigates companies in the sports industry. It attempts to find out how the implementation of corporate social responsibility in the Chinese sports industry impacts the corporate performance. This paper uses panel data of 16 listed companies in the sports industry between 2009 and 2016, and rules out the possibility of spurious regression through a series of preliminary tests. Panel correction error model, asymptotic fixed effect model, super-efficiency DEA-Tobit model and threshold panel model are utilized to analyze the influence of fulfilling corporate social responsibility (CSR) on the corporate performance of listed companies in the sports industry in China.

Internationalization strategy, social responsibility pressure and enterprise value

Recent years has seen Chinese enterprises competing to broaden the scope of business through the internationalization strategy. The proliferation of the strategy is attributable to the favorable environment created by the Chinese government with the increasingly stringent requirements on corporate social responsibility. The external pressure of social responsibility has also stimulated the fulfillment of social responsibility within the enterprises. Against this backdrop, this paper constructs a mathematical model with the constraint of external social responsibility pressure and applies the model to examine the effect of the internationalization strategy of Chinese enterprises on enterprise value. The research finds that: First, the internationalization strategy enhances the enterprise value; the stakeholders will jointly promote the strategy once they are aware of its significance. Second, with the increase in the external pressure of social responsibility, the enterprises will promote enterprise value through the implementation of social responsibility. Third, the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility contributes to the proliferation of internationalization strategy and further enhances the long-term enterprise value. These modeling conclusions are validated through an empirical test. This research enriches the exploration into the internationalization strategy of enterprises in emerging markets and pioneers the study on the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility from the external angle.

Research on Coal Enterprise Investor Sentiment Based on Regulation Algorithm

Academics have conducted extensive research on aspects of corporate social responsibility, but there are less involved in corporate social responsibility and investor sentiment. With the continuous transformation and upgrading of social economy, people pay more and more attention to corporate social responsibility. In order to better study corporate social responsibility, based on the quality of financial reporting, this paper examines the relationship between corporate social responsibility and investors by collecting second-hand data about the relationship between emotions. This paper focuses on how the relationship between corporate social responsibility and investor sentiment changes and how the relationship between the two changes with the quality of financial reporting. Through the research of this paper, we find that the higher the level of corporate social responsibility fulfillment, the greater the investor sentiment, the two are proportional. Under the same condition of the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility, the higher the quality of financial reports, the greater the investor sentiment.

The two-level and two-way reporting system of community benefits for non-profit hospitals in the United States

Information disclosure is important for the government and society to monitor the fulfillment of social responsibility of hospitals. This paper introduced the existing legislatures of the community benefits information disclosure system for non-profit hospitals in the United States, and analyzed thetwo-level and two-way reporting systemof these hospitals, based on facts of California, Illinois and other regions. In the end, the authors put forward inspirations for the development of public hospitals′ community benefits system in China as follows. This refers to the establishment of a social responsibility reporting system, stipulating the hospital and its health authority as the entities accountable for disclosure; a two-level/two-way reporting mechanism to improve the integrity of information disclosure; and standardization of information disclosure content and better timeliness and accessibility of information disclosure. Political Relevance and Corporate Social Responsibility from a Strategic Perspective

Political connection and corporate social responsibility are important social resources of enterprises, which play an important role in debt financing, corporate governance, corporate performance, R&D investment and so on. With the research on the potential motive of social responsibility fulfillment, it is found that enterprises with political connections are required to fulfill more social responsibility. There are few literatures on the relationship between political connections and social responsibility. Therefore, based on resource dependence theory and strategic social responsibility concept, this paper combs the relationship between the construction of political ties and the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility, and considers the relationship from the external institutional environment, the nature of corporate property rights, the categories and levels of political connections.

Responsabilidad social para el apalancamiento del desarrollo sustentable en universidades públicas

Resumen
 El propósito de esta investigación fue analizar la responsabilidad social para el apalancamiento del desarrollo sustentable en Universidades Públicas. El estudio se fundamentó teóricamente en autores como: Ancer (2014), Rebeil (2012), Moreno, Uriarte y Topa (2010), Briceño (2010), Leff (2008), Pelekais y Aguirre (2008), Morros y Videl (2005) entre otros. Se trata de una investigación asociada al paradigma positivista, de tipo explicativa con un diseño de campo no experimental, transeccional. La población estuvo conformada por tres universidades de gestión pública, seleccionando un censo poblacional de treinta y ocho (38) sujetos, a quienes se les aplicaron dos instrumentos desarrollados por el investigador conformado por 24 y 18 reactivos; sometidos a un juicio de diez expertos para su validación y una prueba piloto a 10 sujetos para determinar la confiabilidad por medio del coeficiente Alfa de Cronbach obteniendo valores alfa de 0.96 y 0.98 respectivamente, indicativo de que son altamente confiable. Dentro de los resultados obtenidos se concluyó que en las organizaciones universitarias objeto de estudio, se existe poca presencia de los componentes: Acciones de obligación y sensibilidad social como aspectos que determinan el cumplimiento de la responsabilidad social como política de gestión. De igual modo, se evidenció que la proporción del bienestar humano y ecológico se muestra debilitada en los indicadores estratégicos de desarrollo sustentable, por tal motivo, se revela un comportamiento desfavorable en las autoridades de las universidades públicas, develando que en su gestión estos indicadores no son asumidos corresponsablemente, menos aún la creación de condiciones sustentables.

The Mechanism of Corporate Social Responsibility Fulfillment to Promote Forest Investment

Forestry investment is potentially effective way for enterprises to fulfill their social responsibility. Based on the analysis of connotation and realization mechanism of corporate social responsibility, the paper points out that the coupling of forestry investment and social responsibility is embodied in the comprehensive benefit and social responsibility connotation of forestry investment, and the consistency between forestry investment and social responsibility investment. The results show that the ecological and social benefits of forestry investment are far superior to economic benefits. It is proved that forestry investment is a feasible way for enterprises to fulfill their social responsibilities. The paper analyzes the forestry investment patterns of different enterprises under the social responsibility fulfillment, and points out that the forestry enterprises can participate in the investment projects matching their strategic social responsibility and forestry core social responsibility. Non-forestry enterprises can participate in the business based on the social responsibility investment idea forestry investment projects, and invest in public welfare forestry projects based on responsive social responsibility inputs. It is suggested that the government should improve the social responsibility system construction and strengthen public opinion propaganda to guide forestry and non-forestry enterprises to increase forestry investment by innovating forestry management mode.

Can social responsibility reduce operational risk: Empirical analysis of Chinese listed companies

After 30years of rapid development, China has made great strides in economic growth but at the expense of high environmental and social costs. Listed companies should fulfill their social responsibilities not only to meet the expectations of stakeholders but also to improve management effectiveness, cultivate competitive advantage, create a good image, and achieve sustainable development. Because the influence of corporate social responsibility is expanding gradually in China, the relationship among listed companies’ fulfillment of social responsibilities, information disclosure, and operational risk needs to be explored further. This study uses data on Chinese A-share listed companies from 2007 to 2009 and makes four main findings. First, listed companies improving their social responsibilities fulfillment face significantly lower operational risk. Second, listed companies publishing independent social responsibility reports face significantly increased operational risk. Third, high risk companies improving social responsibility fulfillment can significantly reduce their operational risk, while publishing independent social responsibility reports leads to significantly increased operational risk. Finally, low risk companies improving their social responsibilities fulfillment and publishing independent social responsibility reports experience changes in operational risk; however, the direction of the change varies by company. Companies with different operational risk have different effect because the company's majority shareholder is individual who lack of distinguishing news ability and CSR format is unified that is not enough to emphasize important disclosure issues.

The effects of corporate social responsibility on organizational performance in the Iranian pharmaceutical industry: The mediating role of TQM

In recent years, society and many organizations have been paying increasing attention to the social responsibilities of organizations towards various stakeholder groups. To ensure the fulfillment of social responsibilities of organizations towards society, corporate social responsibility should be embedded in day-to-day operations and managerial decision-making. Total quality management is also a commonly used managerial tool that takes into considerations the interests of various stakeholder groups. This paper investigates how the relationship between corporate social responsibility and total quality management affect the organizational performance measured by the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). The results of the analysis, using structural equation modeling on 933 completed questionnaires sent to the pharmaceutical companies in Iran, suggest that social responsibility is significantly associated with the integration of this responsibility into quality management programs. Quality management, in turn, has a significant and positive effect on organizational performance. The results provide contribution to the earlier studies that have found inconsistent results on the direct association between social responsibility and organizational performance by demonstrating that quality management mediates the relationship between social responsibility and organizational performance. In practice, Managers can strengthen their relationships with stakeholders and, ultimately, improve organizational performance if social responsibility towards stakeholders is embedded in operational routines and processes.

The Quality Assurance and Online Diagnosis Technology of Automatic Verification System for Transformer

Low voltage current transformers are widely used in power system. Such as the records of power consumption, energy trading and industrial load monitoring, is an important measuring component in electric power system of China at the present stage. Whether the low voltage current transformer is accurate or not, related to the power customer's vital interests and the power grid enterprise`s economic benefits, also affects the quality of grid service level and the fulfillment of social responsibilities. To establish a quality assurance system, make the fault detection rate and the percent of pass of the automatic verification system is accordance with the requirements. At the same time, the establishment of online diagnosis system can remind the staff when any failure occurs and help them repairs the fault as soon as possible. It can provide a strong guarantee for the stable operation, management and protection of the automatic verification system.

Partner Selection of Green Supply Chain Based on Corporate Social Responsibility

Partnership is the successful implementation of green supply chain management. Now, supply chain partnership is becoming worse and worse because of the lack of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In order to optimize the supply chain partnership, we study the partner selection from the perspective of corporate social responsibility. We construct a payoff matrix of leading companies and cooperative companies in supply chain, and analyze the game relationship between partner selection of supply chain and fulfilment of corporate social responsibility. Our findings show that partner selection depends on the fulfilment level of corporate social responsibility, and leading companies prefer to cooperate with companies with a high degree of social responsibility in green supply chain. Furthermore, the successful establishment of cooperation can encourage companies to fulfil social responsibility consciously. These findings provide support for green supply chain management in the areas of partner selection, harmonious relationship establishment, and social responsibility fulfillment.
