Antibacterial and sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity of graphene oxide conjugated CeO2 nanoparticles

This work focuses on the structural, morphological, optical, photocatalytic, antibacterial properties of pure CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and graphene oxide (GO) based CeO2 nanocomposites (GO-1/CeO2, GO-5/CeO2, GO-10/CeO2, GO-15/CeO2), synthesized using the sol–gel auto-combustion and subsequent sonication method, respectively. The single-phase cubic structure of CeO2 NPs was confirmed by Rietveld refined XRD, HRTEM, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. The average crystallite size was calculated using Debye Scherrer formula and found to increase from 20 to 25 nm for CeO2 to GO-15/CeO2 samples, respectively. The related functional groups were observed from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, consistent with the outcomes of Raman spectroscopy. The optical band gap of each sample was calculated by using a Tauc plot, which was observed to decrease from 2.8 to 1.68 eV. The valence state of Ce (Ce3+ and Ce4+) was verified using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for CeO2 and GO-10/CeO2. The poisonous methylene blue (MB) dye was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of each sample in direct sunlight. The GO-15/CeO2 nanocomposite showed the highest photocatalytic activity with rate constant (0.01633 min–1), and it degraded the MB dye molecules by 100% within 120 min. The high photocatalytic activity of this material for degrading MB dye establishes it as an outstanding candidate for wastewater treatment. Further, these nanocomposites also demonstrated excellent antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1.

Effects of hydrocolloids on mechanical properties, viscoelastic and microstructural properties of starch-based modeling clay

The effects of various hydrocolloids (guar gum, xanthan gum, and carboxymethyl cellulose) on the texture, rheology, and microstructural properties of modeling clay prepared with cassava starch were investigated. Notably, incorporation of 3 % guar gum and 4 % xanthan gum into starch-based modeling clay resulted in enhancements of 94.12 % and 77.47 % in cohesiveness, and 64.70 % and 66.20 % in extensibility, respectively. For starch-based modeling clay with added guar gum and xanthan gum, compared to formulations without hydrocolloids, the linear viscoelastic range exceeded 0.04 %, and the frequency dependence of both maximum creep compliance (Jmax) and storage modulus (G′) was significantly reduced. This indicates a more stable network structure and enhanced resistance to deformation. Results from Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that the physical interactions between starch and various hydrocolloids, along with the addition of these hydrocolloids, inhibited the degradation effect of thermomechanical processing on the crystalline structure of starch. With the addition of guar gum, it is observed that a continuous and dense network structure forms within the starch-based modeling clay, and starch particles are distributed uniformly. In conclusion, hydrocolloids enhances the properties of starch-based modeling clay, introducing an innovative solution to the modeling clay sector.

Development of highly sensitive electrochemical immunosensor using PPy-MoS2-based nanocomposites modified with 90MeV C6+ ion beams.

Theevaluation of electrochemical sensing activity of hydrothermally derived PPy-MoS2-based nanocomposites subjected to 90MeV C6+ ion beam with fluence ranging, 1.0 × 1010-1.0 × 1013 ions/cm2, is reported. Cross-linking, chain scissioning, and ion track formation could occur in the irradiated systems, as revealed from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM)studies. Electrochemical studies, viz., cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed in 0.1M phosphate buffer solution (PBS) containing 5mM K3[Fe(CN)6] as redox probe. High redox activity, lower charge transfer resistance (Rct = 490 Ω) and larger electroactive area (A = 0.4485 cm2) were obtained in case of the composite system irradiated with a fluence of 3.5 × 1011 ions/cm2. Immunosensor fabrication was executed via immobilization of mouse IgG over the pristine and post-irradiated electrodes. Afterwards, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was performed within thepotential window - 0.2 to + 0.6V (vs. Ag/AgCl) for the detection of specific analyte. Noticeably, the electrode system irradiated with a fluence of 3.5 × 1011 ions/cm2 ischaracterized by a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 0.203nM and a higher sensitivity value of 10.0 µAmLng-1cm-2. The energetic particle irradiation at a modest fluence can offer beneficial effects to thePPy-MoS2-based nanohybrid system providing immense scope as advanced electrochemical biosensor.

Quantification of peracetic acid (PAA) in the H2O2 + acetic acid reaction by the wavelength shift analysis in near-UV/visible absorption region.

In our study, we present an innovative method for the analysis and real-time monitoring of peracetic acid (PAA) formation within the near-UV/Vis (visible) wavelength region. PAA's absorption spectrum, influenced by its presence in a complex quaternary equilibrium mixture with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), acetic acid, and water, lacks discernible peaks. This inherent complexity challenges conventional analytical techniques like Beer's law, which rely on absorption intensity as a foundation. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel approach that centers on the analysis of blue shifts in absorption wavelengths, particularly at an absorbance of 0.8 a.u. This method significantly enhances the precision of calibration curves for both diluted PAA and H2O2, unveiling an exponential correlation between wavelength and the logarithm of concentration for both components. Significantly, our approach allows for real-time and accurate measurements, especially during the dynamic PAA formation reaction. Our results exhibit excellent agreement with data obtained from Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, validating the reliability of our method. It's noteworthy that under stable PAA concentration conditions (after 12h of solution interaction), both traditional absorption method and our approach closely align with the FT-IR method. However, in dynamic scenarios (0-12h), the absorption method exhibits higher error rates compared to our approach. Additionally, the increased concentration of a catalyst, sulfuric acid (H2SO4), significantly reduces the errors in both methods, a finding that warrants further exploration. In summary, our study not only advances our understanding of PAA and its spectral behavior but also introduces innovative and precise methods for determining PAA concentration in complex solutions. These advancements hold the potential to revolutionize the field of chemical analysis and spectroscopy.

Viscosity Reduction Mechanism and Rheological Properties of Ethylene-Bis-Stearamide and Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt

This study investigates the effect of ethylene-bis-stearamide (EBS) on viscosity reducing of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) and explores the interaction mechanism via molecular dynamics simulation (MD), microscope method and rheological experiment. It is confirmed that the EBS play an important role in reducing the viscosity of ethylene-bis-stearamide and crumb rubber modified asphalt (EBS-CRMA), especially when the content is within 3%. The micro morphology and MD results showed that the EBS is coating on rubber and asphaltenes and then forming lubrication film, which is the main reason leading to the viscosity decrease of EBS-CRMA. Additionally, other factors also have significant effect in reducing the viscosity of EBS-CRMA, including the more uniform distribution of asphaltenes, the enhanced diffusion ability of saturates and resins, the reduction of hydrogen bonds and soluble substances within asphalt phase. When EBS content exceeds 3%, the influence on viscosity of EBS-CRMA is not obvious with the EBS content continuously increasing. It can be concluded from Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer and MD results that the molecular aggregation, the concentration increase of intermolecular hydrogen bonds and the diffusion ability decrease of EBS-CRMA molecular system are main reasons. Meanwhile, the coating effect of EBS and soluble substances concentration within asphalt phase are limited as the EBS content over 3%.

Localized surface plasmon resonance effect of 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped on silver nanoparticles for sensing probe application

Metal nanoparticles such as gold and silver are often used in various nanotechnology applications due to the localized plasmon resonance effect that occurs when incident photons interact with metal nanoparticles. 3-mercaptopropionic acid (3-MPA) is one of the capping molecules that can be provided for surface functionalization on gold or silver core because it has thiol and carboxylic group as a linking biomolecule, and this allows the use of nanoparticles for biosensor applications. In this study, we successfully synthesized silver nanoparticles capped by 3-mercaptopropionic acid (AgMPA) by use of two kinds of methods i.e ligand exchange and direct reduction, which reveal the unique characteristic plasmonic peaks of AgNP around 430 nm and 436 nm, respectively with spherical shape of AgNP and diameter size about 6-20 nm. The transmittance spectra from Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) measurement shows that S-H coordination from 3-MPA is invisible after 3-MPA attach on Ag core due to the strong coordination between Ag and the sulfur (S) ion, while the broaden peaks at 1589 and 1385 cm-1 for AgMPA are assigned to asymmetric and symmetric vibrations of carboxylate groups which overlap between carboxylate from citrate and 3-MPA. Finally, the colorimetric detection using AgCA and AgMPA as sensing probe was carried out by use of Biocytin-Avidin system molecule as analyte, which resulted in the colour changed rapidly from yellow to transparent-yellow and the red-shifted of absorbance spectra indicating the attachment of analyte to functionalized molecule of our synthesized AgCA and AgMPA.

A response surface methodology for the use of MIL‐101 as a catalyst for the one‐step synthesis of lactide

Lactide is a vital monomer for producing high molecular weight polylactic acid (PLA) through ring‐opening polymerization. This study synthesized crude lactide from L‐lactic acid with MIL‐101 as the catalyst. MIL‐101 is a metal‐based catalyst with organic ligands (MOF) that was prepared by reacting Cr(NO3)3.9H2O with terephthalic acid (BDC). The formation of MIL‐101 was confirmed from Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The role of MIL‐101 and the effect of temperature, time, and MIL‐101 loading, as well as their interactions in the conversion of lactic acid to crude lactide, were then investigated using the response surface method (RSM). Crude lactide was analyzed using 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to confirm the presence of lactide. The RSM results indicated that the highest conversion of 22.84% can be obtained using a temperature of 175 °C, 1.5% w/w MIL‐101 loading, and a reaction time of 5 h. The RSM model showed that the interaction of MIL‐101 loading and reaction time strongly affected the conversion of lactic acid to lactide, with a P‐value of 0.0021 and an F‐value of 50.45. In contrast, the interaction of catalyst loading and temperature did not significantly affect the conversion of lactic acid to lactide, with a P‐value of 0.2565 and an F‐value of 1.75.

A novel and green 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole modified graphene oxide nanomaterial for enhancing anti-corrosion performance of water-borne epoxy coatings on mild steel

To give full play to barrier effect of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets for improving the unsatisfactory long-term anti-corrosion performance of water-borne epoxy (WEP) coating, eco-friendly 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATA) molecules were used to modify GO for enhancing the dispersion of GO in polymer coating. The results gained from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirm that GO nanosheets were successfully modified with ATA molecules. SEM images show that ATA modification can significantly reinforce the compatibility between GO and polymer coating. The Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests result shows that the ATA-GO/WEP coating (4.7 × 105 Ω cm2) has significantly higher |Z|0.1Hz than pure WEP (1.3 × 104 Ω cm2) and GO/WEP (9 × 103 Ω cm2) coatings after 30 days immersion. This indicate that the well-dispersed ATA-GO nanosheets in polymer coating can remarkably enhance coating's barrier effect, leading to significant improvement of anti-corrosion performance. We believe that this strategy could inspire the development of ATA modified inorganic nanomaterials for anti-corrosion coating applications.

Machine learning‐based prediction of mechanical and thermal properties of nickel/cobalt/ferrous and dried leaves fiber‐reinforced polymer hybrid composites

AbstractDried leaves are the outstanding origin of cellulosic plant matter, and it is securing reputation as a renewable resource. Dried leaves fiber is suggested to possess the capability to substitute synthetic fibers in polymer laminates as a reinforcing component. The novelty of the present study reveals the effect of dried leaves fiber, cobalt, nickel, and ferrous reinforcement on the physical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of epoxy, vinyl‐ester, and polyester polymers using artificial neural network (ANN) technique. These composites were fabricated using ultrasonication bath‐assisted wet layup method under ambient condition. The outcomes of this research exhibit that the dried leaves‐cobalt fillers reinforced in all three polymers possess higher mechanical and thermal stability characteristics when compared with other samples. The reason may be assigned to producing novel hydroxyl functional groups and strong interfacial bonding of fillers within the matrix as observed from Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs, respectively. Moreover, as observed from the thermogravimetric analysis, the dried leaves‐ferrous filler‐reinforced polymer hybrid composites provided higher thermal stability. Statistical analysis was performed using the one‐way ANOVA technique and found that outcomes were significant statistically under the confidence level of 95%. Hence, this investigation not only emphasize the significance of investigating new polymer composites but also highlight the benefits of engaging advanced modeling to forecast the material characteristics precisely.Highlights Dried leaves and cobalt/nickel/ferrous are applied reinforcement to polymers. Challenges of Raman spectra to estimate carbonyl index of microplastics: A case study with environmental samples from sea surface

This study investigates the feasibility of using the carbonyl index (CI) derived from Raman spectra as an indicator of plastic degradation and its relationship with the CI calculated from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, using microplastic samples of polyethylene (PE) from surface seawater. Multiple methods were used to calculate the CI values of FTIR spectra, while proposed methods were used to calculate the corresponding CI values of Raman spectra. Some significant relations between FTIR CI and Raman CI were observed. However, small R2 values suggest weak functional relationships, which can be attributed to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of Raman spectra. These results highlight the challenges of establishing a functional relationship between FTIR CI and Raman CI, including challenges such as the uniformity of Raman spectra, determining optimal Raman measurement parameters, selecting appropriate peaks for Raman CI calculation, deciding on spectral processing methods, and addressing the interdependence of these issues.

Estimation of Carbon Content in High-Ash Coal Using Mid-Infrared Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

The carbon content of different types of coal determines its utility in industries and thermal power generation. The most popular and widely used is the conventional method (ultimate analysis) to determine coal’s carbon content (C, wt.%), along with H, N, and S. In the present study, the authors attempted to analyze the carbon content (C in %) in coals via data from Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which can be a promising alternative. As a reference, the carbon content in the coal samples, referred to as CCHNS (in wt.%), was determined from the ultimate analysis. The mid-infrared FTIR spectroscopic data were used to investigate the response of functional groups associated with carbon or its compounds, which were used to model and estimate the carbon content in coal samples (referred to as CFTIR, in wt.%). FTIR spectral signatures were utilized in specific zones (between wavenumbers 4000 and 400 cm−1) from a total of 18 coal samples from the Johilla coalfield, Umaria district, Madhya Pradesh, India. These 18 coal samples were used to produce 126 Coal+KBr pellets (at seven known dilution factors for each coal sample), and the spectral response (absorbance) from each pellet was recorded. For model development and validation, the training set and test set were formed using a 17:1 split (K-fold cross validation). The carbon content in the coal samples was modeled using the training set data by applying the piecewise linear regression method employing quasi-Newton (QN) with a breakpoint and least squares loss function. The model was validated using an independent test set. A pairwise comparison of estimates of carbon in the laboratory from the CHNS analyzer (CCHNS) and modeled carbon from FTIR data (CFTIR) exhibited a good correlation, relatively low error, and bias (coefficient of determination (R2) up to 0.93, RMSE of 23.71%, and MBE of −0.52%). Further, the significance tests for the mean and variance using the two-tailed t-test and F-test showed that no significant difference occurred between the pair of observed CCHNS and the model’s estimated CFTIR. For high-ash coals from the Johilla coalfield, the model presented here using mid-infrared FTIR spectroscopy data performs well. Thus, FTIR can potentially serve as an important method for quickly determining the carbon content of high-ash coals from various basins and can potentially be extended to soil and shale samples.

Rapid analysis of meat floss origin using a supervised machine learning-based electronic nose towards food authentication

Authentication of meat floss origin has been highly critical for its consumers due to existing potential risks of having allergic diseases or religion perspective related to pork-containing foods. Herein, we developed and assessed a compact portable electronic nose (e-nose) comprising gas sensor array and supervised machine learning with a window time slicing method to sniff and to classify different meat floss products. We evaluated four different supervised learning methods for data classification (i.e., linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), and random forest (RF)). Among them, an LDA model equipped with five-window-extracted feature yielded the highest accuracy values of >99% for both validation and testing data in discriminating beef, chicken, and pork flosses. The obtained e-nose results were correlated and confirmed with the spectral data from Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) measurements. We found that beef and chicken had similar compound groups (i.e., hydrocarbons and alcohol). Meanwhile, aldehyde compounds (e.g., dodecanal and 9-octadecanal) were found to be dominant in pork products. Based on its performance evaluation, the developed e-nose system shows promising results in food authenticity testing, which paves the way for ubiquitously detecting deception and food fraud attempts.

A study of optical properties of copper sulphate pentahydrate doped IOTA-carrageenan polymer electrolytes

Biodegradable polymer films composed of Iota-Carrageenan and Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H2O) were prepared by using the Solution Casting process. To investigate the optical property, different wt.% of CuSO4.5H2O were added to I-carrageenan polymer films. X-Ray diffraction analysis was used to study the structural properties of prepared electrolytes. FTIR study revealed the complexation between the polymer and the salt. The increase in the amorphous nature of the film by the addition of the salt was confirmed using an X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern. The functional group and interaction between the different components present in the polymer film are observed from Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis, implying that the addition of (CuSO4.5H2O) salt causes microstructural differences in the polymer film. The UV-Visible Spectrometer was used to record the optical properties like the absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient, and optical bandgap energy of the polymer blend electrolytes. From this, it was observed that the absorption value was increased with the addition of salt. The optical band gap was also recorded and it was observed that 20 wt.% of CuSO4.5H2O added film was found to have a higher energy gap (4.3 eV) compared with the other.

The readiness of water molecules to split into hydrogen + oxygen: a proposed new aspect of water splitting.

The potential of the anode, at which the evolution of oxygen begins, is a key parameter that describes how well water is split in water electrolyzers. Research efforts related to electrocatalytically initiated water splitting that aimed at reducing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential to date focused on the optimization of materials used to produce the electrodes. Descriptors for the readiness of the H2 O molecule itself to break down into its components have not been considered in water electrolysis experiments so far. In a simple set of experiments, we found that adding dioxane to aqueous solutions leads to a substantial blue shift of the frequency of the O-H stretch vibration which is a sign for an increased strength of the O-H bond (intramolecular bonding). This phenomenon coincides with a significant increase of the OER onset potential as derived from cyclic voltammetry experiments. Thus, the O-H stretch frequency can be an ideal indicator for the readiness of water molecules to be split in its cleavage products. To our knowledge this is the first example of a study into the relationship between structural features of water as derived from FTIR spectroscopic studies, and key results derived from water electrolysis experiments. Banana/ coir biofibers and carbon/innegra fabrics and BN/MWCNT nanoparticles reinforced UV resistant polyester hybrid composites

Plant cellulose fibers are a biodegradable and acceptable alternative for fabricating balanced-strength polymer laminate components due to their higher specific strength, eco-friendliness, and renewable nature. The target of the present investigation is to manufacture banana-boron nitride-carbon fabric and coir-multi walled carbon nanotubes-Innegra fabric hybrid polyester laminates by varying different chemical treatments and determine the physical (density, water absorption, and contact angle), mechanical (tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, impact strength, and shore D hardness) and thermal (onset, endset, glass transition temperature, and carbon residue) characteristics of fabricated laminates. The addition of chemically treated/ untreated banana/ coir fillers in the polyester matrix was affirmed morphologically and structurally from Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectra and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results examined the higher thermal stability of the chemically treated banana/ coir fiber reinforced polyester hybrid laminates around 400 °C. The artificial neural network modeling was performed to select the best composite material among the fabricated laminates. The determination coefficient values were lower than 0.98 for testing, validation, and training for both laminates. The model outcomes exhibited lower root mean squared error, explaining that using the model of an exact threshold was predicted for the artificial neural network forecasting. The one way-Analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was applied to study the significance of the difference between the chemically treated/ untreated banana and coir fillers on physical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics.

Effect of ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN) concentration on the ionic transport in dextran-based polymer electrolyte

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have been recognized as a preferable alternative to liquid electrolytes for energy storage application. However, low conductivity of SPEs has restricted their application. This issue can be overcome by adding controlled amount of dopant salt to the SPEs. In this work, various concentration of ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN) salt was incorporated into dextran using solution cast technique in order to study the effect of NH4SCN on electrical properties, crystallite size, morphology and ionic conductivity. Results from Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirm the coordination of cation of salt at the OH and C-O-C groups of dextran. Deconvolution of the FTIR band between 2015 and 2090 cm−1 was performed to investigate the ion association and dissociation phenomena. It is confirmed that the ion mobility and diffusion are directly proportional to the ionic conductivity. Based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) result, an optimum ionic conductivity of (3.18 ± 1.19) × 10−4 S cm−1 was achieved with the sample containing 40 wt.% salt concentration. The conductivity result can be clarified by the crystallite size obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images.

Water-film thickness imaging based on time-multiplexed near-infrared absorption with up to 500 Hz repetition rate.

We demonstrate high-repetition-rate imaging of the liquid-film thickness in the 50-1000µm range resulting from impinging water droplets on a glass surface. The pixel-by-pixel ratio of line-of-sight absorption at two time-multiplexed near-infrared wavelengths at 1440 and 1353nm was detected with a high-frame-rate InGaAs focal-plane array camera. Frame rates of 1kHz and thus measurement rates of 500Hz could be achieved, well suited to capture the fast dynamics of droplet impingement and film formation. The droplets were sprayed onto the glass surface using an atomizer. Suitable absorption wavelength bands for water droplet/film imaging were determined from Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of pure water between 298 and 338K. At 1440nm, the water absorption is nearly temperature-independent, making the measurements robust against temperature fluctuations. Time-resolved imaging measurements capturing the dynamics of the water droplet impingement and evolution were successfully demonstrated.

Discarded water hyacinth/pineapple fibers and carbon/innegra fabrics and TiC nanoparticles reinforced UV resistant polyester composites

The widespread utilization of plant cellulose fiber-inorganic fillers-synthetic fabric-reinforced laminates is the current trend in the research field. This investigation studies the effect of chemically treated and untreated water hyacinth/pineapple leaf, titanium carbide nanoparticles, Innegra, and carbon fabric reinforcement on the physical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of ultra-violet resistant polyester hybrid composites. The chemically treated and untreated water hyacinth/pineapple leaf fibers were examined from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and found that chemically treated fibers have an excellent interlocking bond with TiC nanoparticles, Innegra, carbon fabric, and polyester matrix. The maximum tensile, flexural, interlaminar shear, impact strength, and shore hardness also affirmed good interfacial bonding of fillers and textiles within the matrix as examined from SEM micrographs. The present investigation also determines the forecasting of the approaches and performance of artificial neural network (ANN) to model the material characteristics of fabricated polyester hybrid composite. Furthermore, the ANN model was more accurate and a valuable technique to optimize the material characteristics of the developed polyester hybrid composite.

Influence of SiC nanoparticles on properties of alkali‐treated areca fruit husk fiber/hybrid polymer composites

AbstractThis work presents the comprehensive characterization of alkali treated areca fruit husk fiber (AAFHF) an industrial agro‐waste reinforced unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) matrix hybrid composite with silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles as filler material. Hybrid composite plates were fabricated with 40 wt% of AAFHF and diverse wt% of SiC nanoparticles ranging from 1 to 4 wt% in steps of 1 wt%. The effect of wt% of SiC nanoparticles in hybrid composite over mechanical, morphological, wear, thermal and water absorption characteristics was investigated. The findings help to conclude that a hybrid composite plate with 3 wt% filler content excels in overall properties. Meanwhile, the accumulation and meager scattering of SiC nanoparticles in composite deteriorated the functional characteristics when the wt% of filler content enhanced to 4 wt%. Also, the failure pattern and interaction between AAFHF, SiC nanoparticle and UPR were understood from the images obtained using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In addition, the availability of functional groups, crystallite size and crystallinity index was obtained from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for the optimum filler content respectively. Moreover, the achieved results suggest the suitability of the developed composite for marine and lightweight applications.

Emulsion-based multi-responsive microspheres for the delivery of lipophilic Ozoile

Natural and biodegradable polymers with pH-responsive properties, such as alginate and chitosan, are widely exploited for drug delivery applications, most notably in the form of biocompatible microspheres. In addition, thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) (PNIPAM) is often added to biomedical delivery systems due to its lower critical solution temperature close to human physiological conditions. In this work, multi-responsive microspheres (MRMs) consisting of a hydrogel matrix made of alginate, chitosan, and PNIPAM were successfully prepared by extrusion dripping and proposed as delivery system for Ozoile (Stable Ozonides) derived from biological olive oil. Ozoile acts as a biological inducer, regulating the main metabolic pathways and stimulating the endogenous defence system. The MRMs containing Ozoile were prepared from alginate/NIPAM emulsions integrating the lipophilic bioactive principle. The MRMs were further optimised with a chitosan coating to improve their stability and control the degradation behaviour of the hydrogel matrix, with subsequent release of Ozoile. Results in terms of chemical composition from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermo-responsive properties from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, swelling and degradation behaviour were used to establish the potential use of the MRMs for the therapeutic release of Ozoile at specific inflammatory sites.
