Design and Experimental Study of a Large Beam Waist Streak Tube in an ICF Experiment.

In order to realize in situ multi-frame framing, this paper designed and developed a large-waist framing converter tube. The size ratio between the waist and the object was about 1.16:1. The subsequent test results showed that the static spatial resolution of the tube could reach 10 lp/mm (@ 72.5%) under the premise of this adjustment, and the transverse magnification could reach 2.9. Once the MCP (Micro Channel Plate) traveling wave gating unit is equipped at the output end, it is expected to promote the further development of in situ multi-frame framing technology.

Theoretical Study of the Spatial Resolution Characteristics of Magnetic Focusing Framing Tubes

Three magnetic focusing framing tubes are designed based on short magnetic lenses, long magnetic lenses, and hybrid lenses consisting of short and long magnetic lenses, and the spatial resolution characteristics of these framing tubes are theoretically studied. The excitation current of the short magnetic lenses is 0.15 A, the imaging magnification ratio is 1:1, and the spatial resolution is better than 50 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> . The spatial resolution difference is 23.08% within the 30-mm off-axis. The spatial resolution of the long magnetic lens framing tube is better than <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$20~\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> , and the spatial resolution difference is 10.71%. However, the long magnetic lenses require a large excitation current of 26.25 A. For the hybrid magnetic lenses, the excitation current of 0.15 A is used to achieve a spatial resolution of better than 20 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\mu \text{m}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> and a spatial resolution difference of 8.11%. The simulation results show that the hybrid magnetic lenses are the best imaging method among these three lenses. A high spatial resolution and spatial resolution uniformity can be simultaneously obtained by using a small excitation current in the hybrid magnetic lens framing tube.

Two-Dimensional Ultrafast X-ray Imager for Inertial Confinement Fusion Diagnosis

A two-dimensional ultrafast X-ray imager (UXI) composed of a time-dilation device, an electron-beam imaging unit, a gated microchannel plate (MCP) framing tube, and a pulser was developed. The time-dilation device extends the time spread of the electron signal generated by the pulsed photocathode (PC), and the electron-beam imaging unit images the electron pulse from PC to MCP. Finally, the gated MCP framing tube samples the dilated electron pulse. The time resolution and image size of the UXI were measured with an X-ray generated by a terawatt laser targeting device. When a driving pulse with a 2 V/ps slope is applied to the PC, the measured time resolution is 21 ps, and the image size is 12 mm × 3.9 mm. Furthermore, the image size varies with the time resolution. The results show that as the time resolution improves, the image size decreases. The use of two opposite-transmission PC driving pulses could improve the image size. Moreover, the measured UXI spatial resolution is 5 lp/mm, and the spatial resolution will be worse with the increasing off-axis distance.

Simulation of a pulse-dilation framing tube with sensitive diameter of 60 mm using large aperture short magnetic lens

A pulse-dilation framing tube with large aperture short magnetic lens is simulated by using Monte Carlo method. The photo-cathode (PC) sensitive diameter is 60 mm, and the image ratio is 2:1. While a -3.15 kV dc voltage overlap by an excitation pulse with gradient of 3 V/ps are applied on PC, a gating pulse with width of 225 ps and amplitude of -1.3 kV plus a −100 V dc bias are for the microchannel plate (MCP), the temporal resolution and spatial resolution are 7.8 ps, 11 lp/mm, respectively. The electron beam temporal magnification factor is about 10.3. The relationship between the spatial resolution and the PC electron beam emitting point is obtained. The variation of the temporal magnification factor and temporal resolution with the PC excitation pulse gradient is also given. Furthermore, the connection between the spatial resolution and the PC excitation pulse gradient is acquired.

Large-format pulse-dilation framing tube with 5 lp/mm spatial resolution

A pulse-dilation framing tube consisting of a pulse-dilation device, a magnetic lens imaging system, and a microchannel plate (MCP) imager is reported. Three are three photo-cathodes coated with 80 nm Au on a 90 mm diameter C8H8 film. And a sensitive area with diameter of about 60 mm is achieved. The magnetic lens imaging system images the photoelectrons from photo-cathode (PC) onto MCP with the image ratio of 2:1. The spatial resolution of the pulse-dilation framing tube is measured, which is about 5 lp/mm. Furthermore, the spatial resolution will be worse with the increasing off axis distance.

Achieving a large detector sensitive area of short magnetic focusing pulse-dilation framing tube using a combination lens

A modified short magnetic focusing pulse-dilation framing tube was developed base on imaging characteristic of solenoid lens and short magnetic lens, by which a combination lens composed of two magnetic lenses with a soft iron shield. The spatial performance is simulated by Runge–Kutta method and the imaging distribution of electrons. The detector sensitive area and spatial resolution is measured using Au photocathode with a UV-ray mask and ultraviolet source. When the magnetic field strengths on the axis close to photocathode and microchannel plate were 31 and 56 G, respectively, and the electron image had 2:1 demagnification, the measured detector sensitive area is Φ45 mm and the spatial resolution is about 207 μm. The spatial performance parameter was satisfied the ICF requirement.

Monte Carlo simulation for spatial resolution of MCP framing tube

Monte Carlo method was used to simulate the spatial resolution of a MCP framing tube.The effects of the MCP bias angle,voltage and parameters of phosphor screen to the spatial resolution were calculated.Simulation result shows that the dynamic spatial resolution of the MCP framing tube is approximately equal to the static spatial resolution.From the simulation results,it is also obtained that the spatial resolution is proportional to the distance between the MCP and screen while other parameters are fixed.The spatial resolution is inverse proportional to the square root of the screen voltage.
