Silver nanoparticles synthesized from marine algae Spatoglossum asperum: Antioxidant properties and seed germination enhancement

Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have shown promising potential in plant growth under stressed conditions but marine algae synthesized AgNPs still remain least explored. In the current study, AgNPs have been synthesis by using the aqueous extract of marine brown alga Spatoglossum asperum as a reducing medium and their application in the growth of Vigna radiata seeds under salt stress conditions was studied. The antioxidant potential of AgNPs in comparison with algal extract was also assessed. The AgNPs synthesized using the algal extract was characterized by means of UV–Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray (XRD) diffraction analysis, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The FE-SEM and EDS results confirmed the formation of multi-shaped (spherical, cubical and nano-clusters) particles with average size of 43.65 nm. Developed AgNPs showed a surface plasmon resonance band at 425 nm and a face-centric cubic crystallographic structure with an average crystallite size of 23.05 nm. The FTIR spectrum ensured the involvement of di and polysulphides in the synthesis of nanoparticles. The results revealed that the algal synthesized AgNPs showed superior antioxidant activity compared to the algal extract alone and significantly enhanced seed germination in Vigna radiata under both normal and saline conditions. These findings suggest that Spatoglossum asperum derived AgNPs could play a pivotal role in agriculture and environmental sustainability.

Degradation of Microplastics by Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Piper longum Leaf Extract.

Background: The environmental hazards posed by microplastics have drawn considerable concern due to their buildup in ecosystems. Microplastics accumulate in human saliva, skin, and hair. Developing effective technology for managing and degrading microplastics remains a substantial challenge. In a concerted attempt to save the ecology, this study explores the photocatalytic breakdown of common microplastics like polystyrene (PS) microspheres and polyethylene (PE) using green-synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) under UV light exposure. Aim: To synthesize and characterize zinc oxide nanoparticles prepared using the extract of the leaves of Piper longumand qualitatively assess the photocatalytic degradation potential of the nanoparticles under light microscopy. Material and Methods:A fresh extract of P. longum leaves was used as a reducing agent to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, UV-Vis spectra analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were performed to characterize the nanoparticles. Microplastics were isolated from the saliva of 50 healthy patients and were purified and filtered. In a six-well microtiter plate, 0.5 μg of varying concentrations of nanoparticles were added. After fixing with 15% formaldehyde, microplasticswere subjected to UV irradiation for 2 hours with different concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles (25, 50, 75,and 100 µg). Custom photoreactors activated the photocatalysts to degrade the microplastic pollutants. The six-well microtiter plate was viewed under 40x magnification in a light microscope to observe microplastic morphology after 24 hours of degradation. Results: The FTIR spectrum showed distinct peaks at 890.51 cm⁻¹, indicating the involvement of C-N in-plane vibrations of amino acids. XRD analysis revealed three distinct diffraction peaks at 31.68°, 34.39°, and 36.33°, corresponding to the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO nanoparticles. The synthesized ZnO nanoparticles ranged from 50 to 90 nm in size, viewed at 100x magnification on SEM. The highest degradation of microplastics was observed ataZnO NPconcentration of 100 µL, with the ZnO NPs 50-90 nm in size. Conclusion: Zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized using Piper longum leaf extract effectively degrade microplastics, with the highest degradation observed at a 100 µL concentration of ZnO nanoparticles and optimal degradation occurring at a concentration of 75 µL.

Green synthesis and characterization of trisubstituted imidazole derivatives by an ecofriendly and efficient heterogenous nanocatalyst based on magnetite nanoparticles coated modified nanocellulose

In the present work, a nanocellulose based magnetic nanocomposite [(pH-PDA-DANC)@Fe3O4NPs] was synthesized by an ecofriendly and a simple protocol and characterized by means of different techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipped with an Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) probe and the Value Stream Mapping (VSM). The theoretical study of [(pH-PDA-DANC)@Fe3O4NPs] was investigated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) at the DFT-D3/ B3LYP/LanL2DZ level of theory to explore the nature of the interactions between the (pH-PDA-DANC) ligand and magnetite nanoparticles. The results indicate that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles form covalent bonds with the N-ring of the ligand. Then, it was used as a catalyst in the green and efficient procedure for one-pot multicomponent syntheses of imidazole derivatives by the condensation of benzil or 9.10-phenanthrenequinone, benzaldehyde derivatives and ammonium acetate. The catalytic reaction provided the synthesis of above imidazole derivatives with high reaction efficiency (80 %-98.1 %) in a short reaction time (3 h) and in presence of a minimum amount of ethanol. The identification and structure of imidazole derivatives was determined analyzing the 1H NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and FTIR spectra. This procedure has several advantages compared to the conventional method such as the high yields, short reaction times, easy separation of the nanocatayst from the reaction mixture by using a magnet, and the reusability of the catalyst.

Microfluidics assisted green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles from the aqueous leaf extract of Ipomoea quamoclit L. with its antimicrobial and antioxidant activity

IntroductionGreen nanosynthesis of medicinal plants are useful for the development of antibiotic agents. In this work, we have explored the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of green synthesised copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) from tropical medicinal plant Ipomoea quamoclit L. MethodsWith the aid of microfluidic technology, a low-cost, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lab-on-chip micromixer for green nanosynthesis of CuO nanoparticle using Ipomoea quamoclit is presented. The UV–Vis characteristics, Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectrum, antimicrobial and antioxidant response using DPPH and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were reported. The antimicrobial efficacy of the synthesised CuO-NPs is tested against two-gram positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, two gram negative bacteria, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae and two fungi species Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger. ResultsUV–Vis spectrum for the synthesised CuO-NPs showed the absorbance at 670 nm, scanning electron microscope (SEM) image analysis and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis confirmed the presence of spherical shaped nanoparticle sized between 65 and 94.5 nm. The presence of bioactive functional groups of N-H, C-H and C=0 stretching was identified using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The maximum mean zone of inhibition obtained was 10.45±0.25 mm for fungi A. niger. The antioxidant activity using DPPH scavenging assay and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay showed the IC50 value 33.94 μg/ml and 42.54 μg/ml respectively. ConclusionsThe obtained results reveal the potential of CuO-NPs synthesised from I. quamoclit L. as a remarkable medicinal entity for wound healing, respiratory infection, fungal infection and urinary tract infection along with the improved antimicrobial and antioxidant activity.

TMAB modified NiFe2O4 nanoparticles for the Effective removal of Eriochrome Black-T azo dye

The Eriochrome Black-T (EBT) azo dye was removed from aqueous solution using TMAB (tetramethyl ammonium bromide) stabilised NiFe2O4 (TMAB@NFO) nanoparticles, which have been synthesized through polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) were used to analyse the TMAB@NFO nanoparticles. Adsorption studies were conducted under a variety of conditions, including pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time, intraparticle diffusion, pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were used to analyse the kinetic data. According to the systematic study of adsorption isotherms and kinetics models, TMAB@NFO nanoparticles will adsorb EBT dye utilising the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The intraparticle diffusion model revealed a linear relationship (R2 - 0.98, 0.97, and 0.94 for TMAB@NiFe2O4 and bare NiFe2O4-NPs), demonstrating how surface modification influences the overall EBT adsorption process and the pore diffusion rate. Additionally, the manufactured nano adsorbents of NiFe2O4 were effectively regenerated and reused after the treatments up to four times following the elimination of 89% of EBT dye by TMAB@NiFe2O4-NPs. The results have demonstrated the enormous potential of TMAB @NiFe2O4-NPs to eliminate EBT in a practical way. Optimizing the polar phase transformation in PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3-activated carbon composite films with the mixture design of experiments

ABSTRACT A salient bottleneck to driving the wider use of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its copolymers in smart applications is the requirement for a high-voltage poling process required to activate their β -phase crystal structure before the realisation of the piezoelectricity response. In pursuit of enhancing the β-phase content of PVDF-based films, various approaches have been employed in recent years. Yet, a perfect solution to the challenge remains elusive. Here, we report a preliminary investigation into the production of unpoled poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) films reinforced with barium titanate (BaTiO3) and activated carbon (AC) to improve the piezoelectric property. Employing the mixture design of experiments (MDOE) method, various formulations of the composite’s constituents weight fractions were determined. Afterwards, series of composite films were produced via a toxic-free solution casting method and characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrum (FTIR) to determine the β-phase content. A non-linear polynomial regression model was established from the experimental FTIR data, and the adequacy of the model was confirmed using ANOVA. Subsequently, an MDOE-enabled optimisation was undertaken, generating a formulation of the composite to obtain the highest β-phase content to be 15 wt.% BaTiO3 and 0.74 wt.% AC. This combination produces a theoretically predicted β-phase content of 72.7 %. A further experimental test employing the optimal formulation produced a β-phase content of 71.90 %, achieved with neither mechanical stretching, thermal annealing, nor electrical poling.

Chemometric classification of Vietnamese green tea (Camellia sinensis) varieties and origins using elemental profiling and FTIR spectroscopy

SummaryThe objective of this study was to employ multi‐elemental analysis and chemometric multivariate data analysis for identifying the geographical origin of Camellia sinensis cultivated in Vietnam's northeastern region. Ninety‐two tea leaf samples encompassing four distinct varieties were sourced from Bac Can and Thai Nguyen provinces. These samples underwent analysis through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and chemometrics, while elemental quantification was achieved via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‐MS), utilising mixed standards for 26 elements. The FTIR spectra exhibited characteristic peaks, denoting the functional groups of the potential compounds present. ICP/MS analysis identified the presence of 14 elements in the tea samples, revealing significant variations in content across the four varieties. principal component analysis (PCA) of the FTIR data illustrated that the initial two principal components accounted for 91.26% of the total variance, effectively segregating the four green tea varieties into distinct clusters. Conversely, PCA of the ICP‐MS spectra also distinguished the four varieties, albeit Trung Du and Hybrid F1 exhibited a proximate distribution. This closeness may be incidental and not indicative of correlation, considering the limited variable set. Our findings ascertain that ICP/MS and FTIR, augmented by chemometric software, serve as efficacious tools for ascertaining the geographical origins of tea.

Detection of Verticillium infection in cotton leaves using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy coupled with machine learning algorithms

Verticillium wilt (VW) is a soil-borne vascular disease that affects upland cotton and is caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb. A rapid and user-friendly early diagnostic technique is essential for the preventing and controlling VW disease. In this study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) technology was used to detect VW infection in cotton leaves. About 1800 FTIR spectra were obtained from 348 cotton leaves. The cotton leaves were collected from three categories: VW group, infected group and control group (non-infected). The vibrational peak of chitins at 1558 cm−1 was identified through mean and differential analysis of FTIR spectra as a criterion to differentiate the VW or infected group from the control group. Classification models were constructed using various machine learning algorithms. The support vector machines (SVM) model exhibited the highest predictive accuracy (>96 %) in each group and a total accuracy (>97 %) for the three groups. These results provide a new approach for detecting Verticillium infection in cotton leaves and shows a promising potential for the future applications of the method in plant science.

Elucidating the bacterial inactivation mechanism by argon cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet through spectroscopic and imaging techniques.

This study aims to assess the potential bacterial inactivation pathway triggered by argon (Ar) cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet (CAPJ) discharge using spectroscopic and imaging techniques. Electrical and reactive species of the Ar CAPJ discharge was characterized. The chemical composition and morphology of bacteria pre- and post-CAPJ exposure were assessed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman micro-spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A greater than 6 log reduction of E. coli and S. aureus was achieved within 60 and 120 s of CAPJ exposure, respectively. Extremely low D- values (< 20 s) were recorded for both the isolates. The alterations in the FTIR spectra and Raman micro-spectra signals of post-CAPJ exposed bacteria revealed the degree of destruction at the molecular level, such as lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, bond breakages, etc. Further, TEM images of exposed bacteria indicated the incurred damages on cell morphology by CAPJ reactive species. Also, the inactivation process varied for both isolates, as evidenced by the correlation between the inactivation curve and FTIR spectra. It was observed that the identified gas-phase reactive species, such as Ar I, O I, OH•, NO+, OH+, NO2-, NO3-, etc. played a significant role in bacterial inactivation. This study clearly demonstrated the effect of CAPJ exposure on bacterial cell morphology and molecular composition, illuminating potential bacterial inactivation mechanisms.

Colour tunability of Dy3+ & Sm3+ activated yttrium aluminium gallium nanocrystals for display applications

A set of powder samples of Y3AlGa4O12 doped with Dy3+ and Sm3+ with different concentration of Sm3+ ion were prepared via sol-gel synthesis. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and photoluminescence spectral studies were carried out. All the diffraction peaks matched the cubic lattice Y3AlGa4O12, as given by the XRD. The SEM images revealed aggregated spherical particles ranging from 50 to 130 nm. The EDS analysis confirmed the presence of the initial chemicals in the synthesized samples. FTIR spectrum was used to examine the vibrational modes in the sample. Under a 366 nm excitation wavelength, the emission spectrum showed the peaks at 492 nm (blue), 580 nm (yellow), 673 nm (red), and 760 nm (near-infrared) corresponding to the characteristic transitions 4F9/2 → 6H15/2,13/2,11/2,9/2 of the Dy3+ ion, respectively. In comparison, the peaks at 568 nm, 614 nm, 664 nm, and 711 nm corresponded to the characteristic transitions 4G5/2 → 6H5/2,7/2,9/2,11/2 of the Sm3+ ion. Under near ultraviolet light excitation, the superposition of these blue, yellow and red colours produced excellent white light emission. The intensities of these transitions varied with the concentration of Sm3+ ion and the excitation wavelength. The emission spectrum of Dy3+ overlapped with the excitation spectrum of Sm3+, indicated possible energy transfer from Dy3+ to Sm3+. According to Inokuti-Hirayama's theory of energy transfer, the mechanism of energy transfer was understood to be quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. The CIE chromaticity co-ordinates and correlated colour temperature values showed that these samples were suitable for light-emitting diode applications.

Effect of the Ratio of Soluble and Insoluble Dietary Fiber from Rice Bran with Extrusion Cooking Treatment on Pasting, Thermal, and Structural Properties of Rice Starch Gel

AbstractThis study aims to investigate the effect of different ratios of soluble and insoluble dietary fiber (0/100, 25/75, 40/60, 55/45, 70/30, 85/15, 100/0) in rice bran treated with or without extrusion cooking on the physicochemical and structural properties of rice starch. As the ratio of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) increases, the PV (peak viscosity), FV (final viscosity), SB (setback value), and BD (breakdown value) of starch are significantly decreased, indicating that a higher SDF ratio can delay the short‐term retrogradation of starch. Compared with the unextruded rice bran SDF/IDF starch gel, the content of weak bond water and free water in the extruded rice bran SDF/IDF starch gel is higher while the content of strong bond water in the starch gel is lower at the same SDF/IDF ratio. Meanwhile, for the results X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), the rice starch with the extruded rice bran SDF/IDF ratio of 25:75 shows the lowest relative crystallinity of 3.48% and the lowest peak to height ratio of FTIR (1047 cm−1/1022 cm−1) of 1.0746, suggesting that the inhibition effect on rice starch retrogradation is better. This may be beneficial for the utilization of different ratios of SDF/IDF from extruded rice bran and physicochemical properties improvement of rice starch gel.

Ultrafast and Highly Efficient Laser Extraction of Matrine and Oxymatrine from Sophora flavescens for the Anticancer Activity.

Matrine and oxymatrine are mainly obtained from Sophora flavescens using the high-temperature and prolonged solvent extraction methods currently employed in industries. In this study, an ultrafast and highly efficient method for extracting matrine and oxymatrine from S. flavescens at room temperature using laser technology, specifically, laser extraction, was demonstrated. The laser extraction rates for matrine and oxymatrine from S. flavescens at room temperature for 1 min were 266.40 and 936.80 mg(g·h)-1, respectively. These rates were 1400 times higher than those achieved with conventional solvent extraction. These results mean that 1 min of laser extraction is equivalent to 24 h of solvent extraction. The reason for such a high efficiency is that laser-induced cavitation can accelerate the rapid release of alkaloid molecules in plant cells. Mass spectrum, nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier-transform infrared spectrum analyses of the extracted matrine and oxymatrine compounds confirmed that they are the same as the products of solvent extraction. Furthermore, it was found that the anticancer activity of laser-extracted compounds is slightly better than that of conventionally solvent-extracted ones, likely due to the slight change in the microstructure or conformation of these compounds under laser irradiation. These findings demonstrated that the laser extraction method was ultrafast and highly efficient, unveiling a novel approach to alkaloid extraction. This discovery will have significant implications for the extraction and utilization of alkaloids from plants.

Intranasal transfersomal based in situ gel for augmenting methylphenidate bioavailability and brain delivery: In vitro and in vivo evaluation

Methylphenidate, a CNS stimulant drug, has poor oral bioavailability due to extensive first-pass effect. In this study, Methylphenidate loaded transfersomes based in situ gel (MPH-TFs Gel) was prepared for brain targeting through intranasal (IN) drug delivery. Methylphenidate transfersomes (MPH-TFs) were prepared using the thin film hydration method. Box-Behnken Design expert software was utilized for the optimization by assessing the effect of independent variables phospholipon 90-G, Tween-80, and Methylphenidate (MPH) on particle size (PS), zeta potential (ZP), Polydispersity index (PDI), and Entrapment Efficiency (EE). The observed mean particle size of the optimized MPH-TFs was found to be 139.7 ± 3.75 nm, mono dispersion with PDI (0.208 ± 0.002), negatively charged (−27.9 ± 0.287 mV) and had an excellent entrapment efficiency (86 ± 3 %). Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra have depicted the compatibility of the components. X-r Diffraction analysis showed the conversion of crystalline structure methylphenidate to amorphous. The optimized MPH-TFs were then subsequently incorporated into an already optimized MPH-TFs Gel. MPH-TFs Gel was then characterized for its physicochemical properties, in vitro and in vivo studies. In vitro release and ex vivo permeation analysis showed sustained release and improved permeation of the MPH-TFs Gel, respectively. Additionally, histopathological studies of nasal membrane affirmed the safety of MPH-TFs Gel after intranasal application. In vivo pharmacokinetic study demonstrated improved brain bioavailability of MPH-TFs Gel compared to orally administered Methylphenidate solution (MPH-Sol).

Genetic parameters of milk mid-infrared spectra and their genetic relationships with milk production and feed efficiency traits in French Lacaune dairy sheep

In French dairy sheep, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) milk spectral data routinely predict the major milk components used in national genetic evaluations. The direct influence of genetic and environmental factors on milk FTIR spectra has been widely studied in dairy cattle, and relatively little in dairy ewes. In this study, 36,873 milk test-day records were available for 4,712 French Lacaune ewes farmed on 8 commercial farms. Our main goals were to provide the first description of spectral data and estimate the genetic parameters of French Lacaune dairy sheep during lactation. Principal component analysis (PCA) results demonstrated the impact of the lactation period on specific wavenumbers, allowing the identification of FTIR spectra collected at early (mo 2-4) and late (mo 5-7) lactation stages. The average estimated heritability (±mean SE) of the FTIR milk spectra from 2,971 to 926 cm-1 (446 wavenumbers) was 0.29 ± 0.02, ranging from 0.13 ± 0.01 to 0.42 ± 0.02. Furthermore, the heritabilities of spectra collected at the beginning or end of lactation changed at each point of the spectrum. However, at each wavenumber, the genomic correlation of transmittance values between these 2 lactation periods was high (>0.77), indicating the absence of a genotype-environment interaction. The genomic correlations between spectral regions and milk production traits (i.e., daily milk yield, fat and protein content, somatic cell score) varied from moderate to high. The results suggested that the most heritable areas of the spectrum were also genetically associated with dairy traits. Finally, the genomic correlations observed between the ewes' feed efficiency traits and the FTIR spectrum were moderate to high, while the genomic correlations between the change in body condition score and spectral data were rather low to moderate. This study confirmed that spectral data from Lacaune ewe milk were heritable, evolved phenotypically and genetically during lactation and were genetically correlated with traits included in breeding goals or traits of interest to the dairy industry.

Role of CsBr in structure and properties of new cesium bromo-borate glasses

Glasses of enlarged chemical composition in the xCsBr-(100-x)B2O3 system, with x = 30–80 mol% have been prepared and studied for the first time. The hydrothermal preparation method is used to prepare fine powdered samples. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FTIR) and 11B Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (11B NMR) are the tools used to study the structure of glasses. Even at the high CsBr concentration (30–60 mol%), XRD results revealed an amorphous structure characterized most of the examined compositions. But glasses enriched with CsBr (70 and 80 mol%) possess some ordered sub-structures impeded in the main amorphous network. 11B NMR and FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of BO3 triangle as the major and dominant structural units. The four coordinated boron (BO4), on the other hand, can't be detected in the all analyzed compositions. An extremely low concentration from BBr4 tetrahedral groups (boron coupled with Br) is formed. The B-O bonds of planar BO3 triangles, which are the fundamental units, were involved in the production of amorphous clusters of the type Cs4B5O9]Br. Density (D) measurement and calculating molar volume (Vm), packing density and free volume(Vf) have been studied. The added CsBr can't play a role of modifier but it might be inserted interstitially between the borate structural units causing increasing of molar volume and free space in the glass network structure. The results based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM-EDP) and X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) are in good agreement, indicating that the amorphous-clustered species are developed in the studied glasses.

A closer look at the fabrication of some doped metal ions in borophosphate glass system and their structural, elastic, optical, and gamma-ray shielding characteristics

Borophosphate host glasses doped with zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), tellurium dioxide (TeO2), or cerium oxide (CeO2) were synthesized using rapid quenching techniques. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, along with deconvoluted FTIR spectra, were recorded in the 400–4000 cm−1 range. Using the models of Tauc and Urbach, the optical energy band gaps of these glasses were found to be 3.212, 3.289, 3.262, 3.087, and 2.475 eV respectively. Due to the incorporation of different metal ions into the prepared glasses, the density increased and the molar volume decreased, making the glass structure highly compact. Since the elastic moduli are directly related to the average cross-link density, the shear and longitudinal moduli show a forward proportionality with the average cross-link density. Detailed reporting focused on the mass attenuation coefficients (μm) and exposure build-up factors (EBF), crucial for evaluating the shielding properties of the material within the energy range of 0.015–15 MeV and penetration depth up to 40 mean free paths (mfp). Glass samples doped with tellurium dioxide exhibited the highest gamma attenuation due to their higher effective atomic number compared to the other samples. Compared to Portland concrete, the prepared glass composites showed higher mass attenuation coefficients across the entire investigated energy range. These results suggest that although Borophosphate glasses doped with cerium oxide have preferred mechanical properties compared with the other prepared glasses, Borophosphate glasses doped with tellurium dioxide could serve as transparent shielding material for medical applications due to their higher attenuation coefficient.

Enhanced Oral Bioavailability and Stability Studies of Loratadine Tablets Based on Solid Dispersion of Modified Ziziphus spina-christi Gum

Background: Solid dispersion is a common technique used for solubility enhancement of poorly soluble drugs. Objective: In this study, loratadine (LOR), a class II biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS), was formulated as solid dispersion tablets using modified Ziziphus spina-christi gum (MZG) as a carrier. Methods: The solvent evaporation method was used for LOR-MZG solid dispersion (SD) preparation. A variety of tests were conducted to characterize and optimize the formulation. Solubility, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray Diffraction (X-RD), and Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of solid dispersions were carried out. Accelerated stability testing and pharmacokinetic studies of formulated tablets were also performed using albino Wistar rats. Results: Solid dispersion improved the solubility of LOR by 51 folds. FTIR spectra excluded drugpolymer interactions, and results obtained by DSC, X-RD, and SEM proved the transition from the crystalline to the amorphous state. The stability of LOR-MZG solid dispersion tablets was found to be better when the Alu-Alu package was used. The pharmacokinetics of LOR-MZG compared to MZG-free loratadine tablets (LOR pure) and commercial loratadine tablets (LOR-TM) following oral administration revealed that about 6 folds and 10 folds bioavailability were achieved with LOR-MZG compared to LOR pure and LOR-TM, respectively. Conclusion: Such promising results encourage more studies on MZG to be used for improving the aqueous solubility and bioavailability of a wide range of poorly soluble drugs.

Chiral porous organic cage used as stationary phase for gas chromatographic separation of chiral and achiral compounds

Porous organic cages (POCs) are a new type of molecular material. The well-defined cavities, abundant host-guest recognition ability, and good solubility of POCs render them attractive for use in various fields such as molecular recognition, gas adsorption, molecular containers, sensing, catalysis, chromatographic separation. In this study, a chiral POC (CPOC) was synthesized via the Schiff base condensation of 4,4',4″,4″'-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetrabenzaldehyde with (R,R)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine. CPOC was characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy (MS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The FT-IR spectrum of CPOC showed a strong peak at 1638 cm-1, which was attributed to imine (-C=N-) absorption, as well as absorption peaks at 2928 and 2856 cm-1, which were attributed to the stretching vibrations of -CH2- and -CH-, respectively. MS analysis of CPOC revealed peaks at m/z=1801.9797, m/z=901.9914, and m/z=601.6631, corresponding to [M+H]+, [M+2H]2+, and [M+3H]3+, respectively, and indicating a molecular formula of CPOC (C126H120N12). The TGA curve of CPOC indicated high thermal stability up to 360 ℃; thus, the material is suitable for use as a stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC). CPOC was coated on the inner wall of a capillary column using the static coating method to prepare a GC column. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to characterize the coating condition of the fabricated column. The SEM images showed that the column had a uniform coating with a thickness of approximately 200 nm. Column efficiency was determined to be 3500 plates/m using n-dodecane as a target at 120 ℃. The polarity of the CPOC stationary phase was evaluated using McReynolds constants, which were measured using benzene, 1-nitropropane, 2-pentanone, pyridine, and 1-butanol as probe molecules at 120 ℃. The average McReynolds constant was 152, indicating that CPOC is a moderately polar stationary phase. The ability of the column to separate organic mixtures, isomers, and chiral compounds was subsequently investigated. All components of the four organic mixtures (n-alkanes, aromatics, n-alcohols, and Grob mixtures) tested achieved baseline separation on the column. In addition, nine positional isomers of disubstituted benzenes were well separated, and seven (o,m,p-nitrotoluene, o,m,p-nitrochlorobenzene, o,m,p-nitrobromobenzene, o,m,p-bromotoluene, o,m,p-dichlorobenzene, o,m,p-chloroaniline, and o,m,p-bromoaniline) achieved baseline separation. Some polar and apolar structural isomers, such as pentanol, dimethylphenol, dimethylaniline, butanol, and C9 aromatic hydrocarbon isomers, were also well separated on the column. Five cis/trans-isomers (nerol/geraniol, cis/trans-1,3-dichloropropene, cis/trans-1,2,3-trichloropropene, cis/trans-citral, and cis/trans-decahydronaphthalene) were baseline-separated on the column. More importantly, the column successfully separated 12 chiral compounds, indicating good chiral separation ability. Among these chiral compounds, five (ethyl 3-hydroxybutyrate, a valine derivative, a glutamic acid derivative, 1,2-butanediol diacetate, and 1,2-epoxybutane) achieved baseline separation. Six of these chiral compounds (ethyl 3-hydroxybutyrate, the valine derivative, the glutamic acid derivative, 1,2-epoxybutane, epichlorohydrin, and epibromohydrin) could not be separated on a β-DEX 120 column but were well separated on the developed column. Moreover, the separation efficiency of 1,2-butanediol diacetate and the isoleucine derivative on this column was better than that on the β-DEX 120 column. Separation of the glutamic acid derivative and o,m,p-nitrotoluene was performed before and after the column was used for repeated injections to explore its repeatability. The retention times and selectivity observed after 80, 160, and 500 injections were nearly unchanged compared with those obtained following the first use of the column, indicating that the column has good repeatability. The column was conditioned at 280 ℃ for a certain period to examine its thermal stability. Separation of 3-hydroxybutyrate and o,m,p-nitrochlorobenzene after the column was conditioned at 280 ℃ for 2, 4, or 8 h revealed no obvious changes compared with the first use of the column, indicating that the column had good thermal stability. Thus, CPOC is a stationary phase with good application potential for GC.

Membrane filter removal in FTIR spectra through dictionary learning for exploring explainable environmental microplastic analysis

Microplastic analysis is a crucial step for locating the environmental contamination sources and controlling plastic contamination. A popular tool like Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is capable of identifying plastic types and can be carried out through a variety of containers. Unfortunately, sample collection from water sources like rivers usually involves filtration so the measurements inevitably include the membrane filter that also has its own FTIR characteristic bands. Furthermore, when plastic particles are small, the membrane filter’s spectrum may overwhelm the desired plastics’ spectrum. In this study, we proposed a novel preprocessing method based on the dictionary learning technique for decomposing the variations within the acquired FTIR spectra and capturing the membrane filter’s characteristic bands for the effective removal of these unwanted signals. We break down the plastic analysis task into two subtasks — membrane filter removal and plastic classification — to increase the explainability of the method. In the experiments, our method demonstrates a 1.5-fold improvement compared with baseline, and yields comparable results compared to other state-of-the-art methods such as UNet when applied to noisy spectra with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but offers explainability, a crucial quality that is missing in other state-of-the-art methods. The limitations of the method are studied by testing against generated spectra with different levels of noise, with SNR ranging from 0 to – 30dB, as well as samples collected from the lab. The components/atoms learned from the dictionary learning technique are also scrutinized to describe the explainability and demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method in practical applications.

Mercury Ion Selective Adsorption from Aqueous Solution Using Amino-Functionalized Magnetic Fe2O3/SiO2 Nanocomposite.

This study focuses on the development of new amino-functionalized magnetic Fe2O3/SiO2 nanocomposites with varying silicate shell ratios (1:0.5, 1:1, and 1:2) for the efficient elimination of Hg2+ ions found in solutions. The Fe2O3/SiO2-NH2 adsorbents were characterized for their structural, surface, and magnetic properties using various techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Braunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), zeta-potential, and particle size measurement. We investigated the adsorption circumstances, such as pH, dosage of the adsorbent, and duration of adsorption. The pH value that yielded the best results was determined to be 5.0. The Fe2O3/SiO2-NH2 adsorbent with a silicate ratio of (1:2) exhibited the largest amount of adsorption capacity of 152.03 mg g-1. This can be attributed to its significantly large specific surface area of 100.1 m2 g-1, which surpasses that of other adsorbents. The adsorbent with amino functionalization demonstrated a strong affinity for Hg2+ ions due to the chemical interactions between the metal ions and the amino groups on the surface. The analysis of adsorption kinetics demonstrated that the adsorption outcomes adhere to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The study of adsorption isotherms revealed that the adsorption followed the Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption of Hg2+ ions with the adsorbent occurred as a monomolecular layer adsorption process. Furthermore, the thermodynamic analyses revealed that the adsorption of Hg2+ ions using the adsorbent was characterized by a spontaneous and endothermic process. Additionally, the adsorbent has the ability to selectively extract mercury ions from a complex mixture of ions. The Fe2O3/SiO2-NH2 nanocomposite, which is loaded with metal, can be easily recovered from a water solution due to its magnetic properties. Moreover, it can be regenerated effortlessly through acid treatment. This study highlights the potential use of amino-functionalized Fe2O3/SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles as a highly efficient, reusable adsorbent for the removal of mercury ions from contaminated wastewater.
