This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on the role of technology in translation, offering valuable information for translators, language learners, and professionals in the field. The findings of this study have the potential to shape future practices and advancements in computer-aided translation.

The Domestication and Foreignization of Socialist Culture with Chinese Characteristics in the Process of Translating

With the globalization of the world economy and the continuous development of political multi-polarization, translators are playing an irreplaceable role. As an advocate and builder of a community with a shared future for mankind, China's communication with other political entities on the international stage is particularly important. General Secretary Xi Jinping advocated that contemporary young people should learn Chinese stories and tell Chinese stories well. Telling Chinese stories well is a huge responsibility and challenge for translators. This study bases on domestication and foreignization theory, analyses socialist texts with Chinese characteristics, and summarises translation strategies for telling the Chinese story through examples. Then the author concludes that when telling Chinese stories to the outside world, on the basis of understanding the cultural background and traditional customs of other countries, it should let the outside world understand the beauty of Chinese stories and idioms. At the same time, retain the expression of characteristic Chinese culture, so that people can feel the charm of foreign culture. Moreover, mastering the strategy of domestication and foreignization in translation is of great importance to promoting the development of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics on the world stage and the development of a community with a shared future for mankind.

A Critical Analysis of Adaptation, Domestication and Foreignization as Effective Strategies for Translating Shakespeare’s Plays into Assamese

One of the major challenges faced by the translators is finding equivalence in the target language. The translators of Shakespeare plays have used Assamese words as appropriate equivalence of English words used by Shakespeare. However, it is not possible for the translators to claim that a particular kind of translation is the most faithful to the source text or the original text. The critics of translation studies are divided on deciding the parameters to assess whether a particular translation is faithful or not. The translators face various challenges in the process of translation such as finding equivalence, truthfully representing the linguistic and cultural nuances etc. In this process, the Assamese translators of Shakespeare’s plays have used adaptation, domestication, foreignization etc. Although the methods are different, they serve a common purpose, i.e., to bring a culturally and linguistically different text close to Assamese readers. The Comedy of Errors was the first Shakespeare play to be translated into Assamese by Ratnadhar Barua, Ramakanta Barkakoti, Gunjanan Barua and Ghanashyam Barua as Bhramaranga in 1888. Since then, a good number of Shakespeare plays have been either adapted or translated into Assamese. As You Like It, Cymbeline, Macbeth, Troilus and Cressida, Taming of the Shrew, King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream etc. were adapted into Assamese. Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Twelfth Night etc. were translated using domestication as an effective strategy. Othello, Macbeth, Measure for Measure were also translated by other translators using foreignization as an effective strategy. The paper examines the multiple methods that have been used for translation of Shakespeare’s plays into Assamese across time with special emphasis on adaptation, domestication and foreignization. As multiple translations of the same Shakespeare plays are available in Assamese, the paper also highlights the features of those translations and critically comments on their effectiveness in terms of strategies used by the translators. It also underlines the challenges faced by the translators while translating Shakespeare’s plays into Assamese. Specific examples from both the source texts and target texts are given to assess the process of translation. A few translators have retained the original names in the translations. A few others have change the names completely giving some indigenous flavor to the target texts. The choices of the translators and the factors responsible for such choices have also been discussed in this paper. The paper also documents most of the Shakespeare plays translated into Assamese since 1888. However, the assessment of the strategies used to translate the plays is not chronological. The paper is divided into three main parts: ‘Adaptation of Shakespeare’s Plays into Assamese’, ‘Domestication in Translation of Shakespeare’s Plays into Assamese’ and ‘Foreignization in Translation of Shakespeare’s Plays into Assamese’.

Translation Strategy: A Study on Domestication and Foreignization ― With Focus on Louis Carroll’s Novel Alice in Wonderland

This article examines the translation strategies for domestication and foreignization in translation for children by using Lewis Carroll s novel Alice in Wonderland and its five translated texts as text analysis objects. When translating the contents of the source text that are not familiar to the culture of translated text, the translator must carefully decide whether to domesticate it to improve understanding for readers who read the translated text or foreignize it to convey the meaning of the source text properly. However, since such a translation strategy is a subjective judgment of the translator, the translators who translate the source text can take a different approach to the same source text because they adopt the translation strategies they pursue. In the case of translating literary works for children, the translation strategy should be decided according to the level of knowledge the children have. In other words, if the translator does not recognize the level of background knowledge of the readers who read the translated text, it can halve the joy of reading. Since the translation of literary works for children is different from that for adults, when translating for children who lack background knowledge, it is necessary to carefully consider which translation strategy will be more effective for the reader.

The ideology of translation vs translation procedures

Translation plays an important role in the transfer of knowledge between cultures, languages ​​and nations different. As an activity to transfer the message or purpose contained in one language into another language appropriately and naturally, translation work becomes complex. Therefore various approaches were initiated to understand the process translation, including the theory of translation ideology. The terms domestication and foreignization in translation are two terms put forward is often referred to as an ideology or translation strategy. Domestication is a strategy which is used to reduce the "alienation" of the term from the source language, thus the reader feel like a translation is not a translation product. While foreignization is on the contrary, this strategy is more towards the source language to introduce the term or foreign culture to the target audience. In practice, translators cannot be separated from both, but different biases are often based on the purpose of translation and who is the user of the translation. This article provides a brief overview of the ideology of translation and how important this theory is to raise awareness translation about the impact of their choice on the translation result.

On Necessity and Feasibility of Foreignization in the Translation of Classical Chinese Poetry

Classical Chinese poetry is the concentrated reflection of traditional Chinese culture and its translation is an event of cross-cultural communication of increasing importance in the present age of globalization. This essay aims to analyze the necessity and feasibility of foreignization in the translation of classical Chinese poetry (CCP). Foreignization in CCP translation can convey the profound cultural connotations that are contained in cultural elements and retains the original poetic flavor. The author concludes that only through foreignization can we meet the needs of those curious readers in the west and achieve cultural communication with the West in the real sense.

POSTCOLONIAL TENDENCIES IN TRANSLATION IN THE LIGHT OF CENTRE-PERIPHERY PRE-CONCEPTUAL IMAGE SCHEMA

One of the main characteristics of translation is that it can be called everything but stable; multiple cultural, social, political, and economic processes are reflected in translation. Postcolonial studies in translation deal with, among others, cultural and linguistic hegemonies as well as strong and weak – or central and peripheral – cultures and the relations between them. Many of the theories (Even-Zohar, 1979; Tymoczko, 1999) state that strong cultures set an example whereas weak cultures attempt at following this example, even at the cost of their own values and culture (so-called foreignization in translation). It is significant to ask oneself why such processes take place. The investigation of the pre-conceptual image schemata of CENTRE-PERIPHERY and PLUS-MINUS polarity of the SCALE sheds some light on the nature of these interactions (Krzeszowski, 1997).

Turkish Culture Represented in English: Translation of Material Culture Elements in Buket Uzuner’s Novel Uzun Beyaz Bulut-Gelibolu* Betül Özcan Dost, Aslı Özlem Tarakcıoğlu Abstract Translation has been an important humanitarian action since the first days of humanity and it has been closely related with culture. Because of this close relation between the two concepts; translation studies have recently put emphasis on the study of translation and culture. The aim of this study is to descriptively analyse translation of material culture elements in Buket Uzuner’s novel Uzun Beyaz Bulut-Gelibolu translated into English as The Long White Cloud-Gallipoli by Pelin Thornhill Arıner within the framework of domestication and foreignization strategies. The study focuses on determining how translation procedures by Peter Newmark that are used in translation of cultural elements affect the governing translation strategy, namely domestication and foreignization in translation of the selected novel.The procedures are divided into two strategies as domesticating and foreignizing strategies. Naturalization, Cultural equivalent, Functional Equivalent, Descriptive Equivalent, Synonymy, Modulation, Translation Label, Compensation, Componential Analysis, Reduction and Expansion and Paraphrase are analysed under domestication strategy while Literal Translation, Transference, Through Translation and Paraphrase, Notes, Additions are analysed under foreignization strategy. Translating Direction: Illustrations in Native and Translated Japanese Children's Literature

This paper examines the interaction of the visual and verbal texts for picture books and illustrated chapter books published in Japan. Japanese picture books are produced in both left-to-right and right-to-left gross textual directions. Visual-verbal interactions are examined for both directions, and the same kinds of interaction are found as for picture books produced in mono-directional languages such as English. Chapter books, however, are conventionally published in a right-to-left format. This means that unless some kind of action is taken by publishers, there is likely to be a conflict of direction between the visual and verbal texts. The publishing choices made for chapter books are discussed in terms of Even-Zohar's literary polysystem theory, and the reading effects of these choices are discussed in terms of Venuti's concepts of domestication and foreignization in translation.

Brief Study on Domestication and Foreignization in Translation

This essay gives a brief study of Domestication and Foreignization and the disputes over these two basic translation strategies which provide both linguistic and cultural guidance. Domestication designates the type of translation in which a transparent, fluent style is adopted to minimize the strangeness of the foreign text for target language readers; while foreignization means a target text is produced which deliberately breaks target conventions by retaining something of the foreignness of the original. In the contemporary international translation field, Eugene Nida is regarded as the representative of those who favour domesticating translation, whereas the Italian scholar Lawrence Venuti is regarded to be the spokesman for those who favour foreignizing translation, who has also led the debate to a white-hot state.
