This paper is the result of some rather random observations in Beirut, together with more formal work during the spring and summer of 1949 with a Damascene informant at the Foreign Service Institute, Department of State, Washington, D.C. During his work with this informant, the author was able to detect no significant differences between the important gesture patterns of Beirut and Damascus. No distinction is therefore made in present paper.
