Content Analysis of Flood Relief Efforts: Examining Coping and Recovery Themes in Resilience Narrative Analysis

Climate change and pollution have increased frequency of floods. According to statistics, floods are becoming more frequent and causing significant damage, especially to the victims. Subsequently, victims must develop greater resilience. The aim of this study is to determine the focus on flood victims dealing with flood disasters. As part of the inclusion criteria, six relevant government documents were reviewed, all related to flood resilience. Thematic analysis was conducted using ATLAS.ti software identifies five main themes such as resilience behavior, community sustainability, disaster management, strategic planning, and global security. Therefore, the government should develop innovative strategies, utilize the latest technologies, and promote international collaboration to improve flood resilience. Encouraging community sustainability can help flood victims develop resilience behaviors, which is important for creating a society that can withstand natural disasters.

Strategic resilience: Integrating scheduling, supply chain management, and advanced operations techniques in production risk analysis and technical efficiency of rice farming in flood-prone areas

Farmers face various risks such as production risks in the use of technology, pests, climate change and natural disasters. Farmers in disaster-prone areas have different responses depending on their behavior towards the risks posed. The main problem in this research is how farmers behave towards production risks due to flooding and the technical efficiency of rice farming in flood-prone areas. The aim of this research is to analyze farmers' behavior towards production risks due to flooding and the technical efficiency of rice farmers in flood-prone areas. The results of this research will provide important information for policy simulations that the government can implement towards farmers affected by natural disasters and for sustainable disaster mitigation strategies. The novelty of this research is that it combines two theories, namely risk behavior and agricultural technical efficiency in producing disaster mitigation strategies. The research location was determined purposefully in Pasuruan and Bojonegoro Regencies. The data in this research are primary and secondary data with the sample in this research being farmers. The sampling technique in this research is a multi-stage cluster sampling technique. The analysis method in this research uses Just Pope. and the Cobb-Douglas production function model with the Stochastic Production Frontier approach. The target of these research findings is a model of the types of behavior regarding the risks of farmers who are flood victims, as well as the level of technical efficiency of rice farming and the factors that influence it. The expected findings are policy recommendations regarding disaster mitigation from economic and agricultural risk aspects to create sustainable agriculture.

The Impact of "Soft" and "Hard" Flood Adaptation Measures on Affected Population's Mental Health: A Mixed Method Scoping Review.

The frequency and severity of floods has increased in different regions of the world due to climate change. It is important to examine how adaptation measures impact the mental health of individuals affected by these disasters. The goal of this scoping review was to document the existing studies on the impact of flood adaptation measures in affected populations to identify the best preventive strategies and limitations that deserve further exploration. This study followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Inclusion criteria focused on studies in English or French available in MEDLINE and Web of Science that examined the impact of adaptation measures on the mental health of flood victims. Literature reviews or non-study records were excluded from the analysis. A total of 857 records were obtained from the examined databases. After 2 rounds of screening, 9 studies were included for full-text analysis. Six studies sought to identify the factors that drive resilience in flood victims, whereas 3 studies analyzed the impact of external interventions on their mental health. The limited number of studies demonstrates the need for public health policies to develop flood adaptation measures that can be used to support the mental health of flood victims.

The socio-politics of (Re)constructing home in a post-displacement context in rural Zimbabwe

This paper contributes to and advances the sociological discourse on ‘homing’ by examining the implications of the socio-political dynamics of resettlement, with particular reference to the 2014 Tokwe-Mukorsi flood victims in rural Zimbabwe, five years after they were resettled in Chingwizi. The article highlights the intricacies encountered by displaced persons as they strive to establish what they consider an ideal home – one that guarantees, at the very least, food security, shelter, safety, property rights, identity, and a sense of belonging. Drawing on actor-network theory, the article utilizes empirical qualitative data gathered using interviews and focus groups from displaced persons and government officials. The intention was to illuminate how homing experiences are influenced by socio-ecological encounters between displaced persons and other key actors. From the adversities resulting from the floods, the victims waded not in a socio-ecological vacuum or neutral space but in a hotly contested terrain as they sought to adapt to climatic conditions at the new location, overcome past cultural fixations, and ultimately build a new homely life. The study found that these processes, inter alia, meant navigating the complex socio-political dynamics of exclusion and marginalization that rendered the quest for an ideal home untenable.

Study On Flood Management and Analysis Using Geographical Information Systems On Godavari, Konaseema District, India

The Konasema area in Andhra Pradesh, India is prone to flooding due to coastal storms, storm surges, and river overflows. Flooding can be dangerous and pose a threat to human life and property. Floods are unpredictable and can happen suddenly, causing significant damage. Therefore, planning for flood management is essential for rescuing flood victims, resolving flood issues, and implementing preventive measures. In recent years, flooding has become more frequent in the Konaseema area, especially in the Godavari river's and near surrounding areas. Heavy floods from the Godavari River have been caused severe flooding in nearby konaseema villages. Flood management by water resource planners using GIS (Geographic Information System) developed land use and land cover maps, Flood zone maps in the study region. This study aims to analyse impact of Godavari River floods in Konaseema and East Godavari district Andhra Pradesh, India. DEM (Digital Elevation Model) is generated and prepared various thematic maps of Flood prone regions. The GIS generated flood impacted maps are analyzed and these maps will help to rescue the people from flood regions and migrate them in time to the safe zones.

Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder and its relationship with coping strategies among flood victims: Evidence from Iran

IntroductionPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and highly debilitating mental disorder that often occurs following accidents and natural disasters. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of PTSD among flood victims in Lorestan, Iran and examine its relationship with coping strategies. MethodsThis descriptive-analytical study included 470 flood victims in Lorestan, Iran within the first year after the flood in 2019. Participants were selected through simple random sampling. The research utilized the PTSD checklist and coping strategies questionnaire as data collection instruments. Data analysis involved independent t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, and the Pearson correlation coefficient, with a significance level of 0.05, using SPSS software version 22. ResultsThe prevalence of PTSD among flood victims in Lorestan, Iran was found to be 12.8 %. Women, individuals over 35 years old, those with an education level below high school, married individuals, and people with low income exhibited higher PTSD prevalence and average total coping strategies scores. Passive coping strategies (r = 0.267, p < 0.001), social coping strategies (r = 0.148, p = 0.004), and the overall coping score (r = 0.153, p = 0.003) demonstrated a direct and significant correlation with the average PTSD score. ConclusionThis study highlights the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among flood survivors, especially among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, women, and those with low socio-economic status. To enhance post-disaster adaptation, support organizations should implement various strategies including resilience-building, mental health awareness campaigns, and improved access to healthcare services. Effective screening and promoting positive coping strategies are crucial for supporting survivors' psychological well-being.

Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Traumatic Experiences Among Social Workers: Emotional Regulation as a Protective Factor

This study was based on burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious traumatic experience among social worker, and emotional regulation as a protective factor. The social workers were those who supported flood victims in different cities of Pakistan. The purpose of this study was to find the importance of emotional regulation among social workers in situations of burnout and compassion fatigue. Research participants were 200 individuals, with age range of 18 to 30 years (early adulthood). The data was collected from social welfare organizations. The study was quantitative in nature. Snowball sampling technique was used. The Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) by Gross and John (Gross &amp; John, 2003). Burnout, Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma Assessment by the Crisis &amp; Trauma Resource Institute, were administered on the participants. To test the hypothesis regression analysis was used to determine the impact of emotional regulation on burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious traumatic experience. Pearson Bivariate correlation analysis was used to determine the association between emotional regulation, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout. Independent sample T Test was used to evaluate the gender differences in level of emotional regulation, burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious traumatic experience. The result showed significant impact of emotional regulation on burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious traumatic experience among social workers. The result also shows that there is significant negative correlation between burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious traumatic experience. Hypothetical and actual results are closely related.

Climate change and urban stormwater: vulnerability analysis of the 2010 floods in Lomé, Togo

This manuscript assesses the vulnerability to flooding between June and August 2010 in Lomé, Togo. To this end, we administered a survey to 312 inhabitants of different areas affected by flooding. The flood risk assessment methodology is based on the analysis of socio-economic indicators, risk exposure indicators, sensitivity indicators and indicators relating to the recovery capacity of flood victims. The analyses showed that 61.5% of respondents had no perception of the risk, compared with 38% who were aware of a very low level of risk compared with 2010. In addition, 84.2% of people living in areas vulnerable to flooding said they were not aware of the risk of flooding in their area. The government's assistance consisted of emergency supplies (food, medicines and temporary accommodation) for the most vulnerable sections of the population. The relevance of this research is not limited to understanding vulnerability to flooding, as it also brings new clarity to the relationship between urban management and socio-economic challenges. This research shows that vulnerability has been exacerbated by socio-economic insecurity and the inadequacy of sanitation facilities.

Understanding the impact of computer-based technology storytelling for help seeking and help receiving among victims' of flood disaster

Despite the increasing use of social media for help-seeking and receiving, less focus has been devoted to social media's role in seeking and receiving help during disaster periods like flooding, especially from a developing country perspective like Nigeria, which is facing recent worrisome flood disasters. In this study, we looked at the impact of social media storytelling on seeking and receiving help among victims of a recent flood disaster in Nigeria. An online survey was employed to collect data from 470 flood victims in Nigeria. SPSS version 25 and Smart PLS version 4 were used for data analysis. We found a positive association between social media storytelling and help-seeking among flood victims in Nigeria. The inference is that social media storytelling gives Nigerian flood victims a crucial platform to ask for assistance because of the ongoing flood disaster in the nation. Additionally, we discovered a positive connection between social media storytelling and the support provided to flood victims in Nigeria. Accordingly, assistance grew as Nigerian flood victims told more stories on social media. Finally, the study discovered that presenting stories on open platforms like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook drew more immediate feedback and support than storytelling on Facebook and WhatsApp groups as well as interpersonal communication between social media network members. Flood victims, their families and all relevant authorities are encouraged to present flood stories on open platforms like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook to draw more immediate feedback and support.

Social Amplification and Attenuation of Flood Risk Perception by Broadcast Media Risk Messages During the 2022 Floods in Selected Southern States in Nigeria

The study examined if the flood risk messages in broadcast media in select states in Southeast and South-south Nigeria effectively amplified risk perception that influenced community response during the 2022 flood in Southern Nigeria. Consistent with the assumptions of the social amplification and attenuation of risk framework, this study looked at the frequency of the flood risk communications, gauged whether the flood risk messages were considered credible and trusted by the communities, and ascertained the extent to which the messages increased public worries and provoked a sense of threat and response to the flood hazards. The data were gathered from 380 flood victims in 4 communities in Anambra (Southeast) and Delta (South-south) States using a descriptive survey method. The study found that the broadcast media information and warnings were credible and increased public concerns but the amplification of flood risk perception in the broadcast media were not effectual as the risk communication did not start in time and the impact of the messages was moderated by institutional, social, economic and psychological variables that affected how the communities perceived, managed and responded to the flood risk messages. The study recommended that the flood risk messages should be timely, emphasise the severity of the threat of an impending flood, and sufficiently dramatize the message and the threat..

Institutional arrangement for mitigating and adapting to climate change-related flood risk in Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA)

Episodic floods, attributable primarily to climate change, global warming, and sea level rise, have worsened and continue to be a significant threat to life. Building resilience and improving the adaptive capacities of communities under threat will require institutional and cross-agency collaboration. This paper assessed institutional arrangements for mitigating and adapting to climate change-related flood risk in GAMA, Ghana. Using a descriptive cross-sectional survey, the study collected and analysed data from 65 private businesses and governmental, community, and civil society organisations to assess how institutions collaborate in preparing and adapting to flood risks in the study area. The study finds that frequent flooding, destruction of property and lives, and regular community agitations have triggered high-level consciousness, institutional arrangements, and collaboration within and among communities to build capacity and resilience. In addition, organisations have been educating indigenes on flood preparedness, providing relief items to support flood victims, and conducting training and research. Organisations have also supported communities in developing sandbags, planning sea defence mechanisms, providing rescue and evacuation assistance, providing transportation and logistics, and relocating stranded flood victims. Despite these efforts, the lack of adequate funding and logistics, coupled with the absence of proper consultation and involvement of most organisations in making national-level decisions on climate change and flood-related issues, have rendered flood management efforts less effective. This paper makes the case that proactive and collaborative flood responses should replace reactive and individual approaches to improve flood control efficacy and minimise casualties and property losses.

Usability Survey on Integrated Support System for Flood Disaster Management

Recovery and response in managing flood disaster requires effective communication system for information sharing and coordination between agencies. However, the flood rescue and relief operations in Malaysia is yet inefficient due to decentralised management system between humanitarian relief organisations. Hence, this study attempt to contribute through information technology solution by integrating roles of different agencies such as Ministry of Health (KKM), Malaysian Department of Social Welfare (JKM), Malaysian Meteorological Department (JMM) as well as nonprofit organisations (NGOs) in managing flood victim. Therefore, Waterfall methodology has been adopted in developing an online flood integrated support system for mitigating, preparing, responding, and recovering flood management process. The system acts as a centralised platform for flood rescue voluntary, disseminates flood-related information updates, and manage flood victim health status particularly in the Segamat district of Johore. An online usability survey by purposive sampling has been conducted with 30 public citizens representing prospectives system users. In addition, three individuals from flood management agencies are selected to represent the system administrator for evaluating the system usefulness through USE questionnaire. Findings for the usability survey suggested that the system usability is satisfactory. Likewise, while the admin features have been satisfactorily rated based on the USE questionnaires with some suggestions for future improvement. Extending the system features in managing registration and aid for the victims in the flood evacuation centre is recommended for future work.

SOSFloodFinder: A text-based priority classification system for enhanced decision-making in optimizing emergency flood response

&lt;p&gt;Flooding is a significant concern in nations with frequent precipitation because it can instantly affect multiple regions simultaneously. Due to the unpredictability of their occurrence caused by rapid water level rise, it is challenging to predict such natural disasters accurately. During flooding, prompt rescue efforts are crucial for the affected population. Due to flooded highways and residences, rescue teams may have difficulty locating victims. This hinders the potentially perilous and time-consuming rescue operation. To address this problem, we propose a web-based system that integrates natural language processing (NLP) with global positioning system (GPS) functionality. The SOSFloodFinder system provides automatic classification priorities for text messages sent by flood victims, as well as their most recent or current locations. The classification of text based on priority enables efficient resource allocation during rescue operations. In conclusion, this system has the potential to reduce future flood-related fatalities. Additional research and development are necessary to thoroughly investigate this method’s practical capabilities and effectiveness.&lt;/p&gt;

Holistic Nursing and Quran Recitation and its Impact on Floods Survivors in Indonesia.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was aimed to explore the trajectory of thoughts and feelings related to religiosity and spirituality using a holistic approach following attendance at group-Quran Recitation (QR) sessions among annual flood victims. Design: This is a qualitative study with an in-depth retrospective interview conducted data in 2019. Methods: The purposive sampling was applied to conduct face-to-face individual video-recorded semistructured interviews. Seventeen participants followed six QR chanting sessions in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using inductive analysis. Findings: After extracting evidence expressions of participants, the research team generated the central theme of "Holism of Religiosity and Spirituality," using three influential sub-themes, including obedience to God's will, growing a positive mindset through spirituality and life started to be delighting from nine categories. Conclusion: The relationship of body-mind concepts of holism through QR among flood sufferers was explored. The effect of QR chanting is beneficial to change awareness about the wisdom of spirituality. The holistic approach of religiosity and spirituality in nursing care is recommended to promote all service settings, especially community and disaster nursing in the Indonesian context. Future research is needed to develop QR chanting activities among multiethnic and socio-cultural groups as alternative therapy quantitatively.

Implementasi CSR dalam Perspektif Etika Bisnis Islam (Studi Kasus Di PT Pisma Putra Textile Kabupaten Pekalongan)

This research aims to find out and analyze how Corporate Social Responsibility is implemented at PT Pisma Putra Textile, Pekalongan Regency, as well as analyzing the perspective of Islamic business ethics in implementing CSR. In this research, researchers used qualitative research. The type of research used in this research uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Using primary data and secondary data. Primary data was obtained through interviews, observation and documentation. Meanwhile, secondary data was obtained through books related to research. By using a data validity test method which is then analyzed using triangulation techniques to find research conclusions. The results of this research conclude that the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility carried out by PT Pisma Putra Textile Pekalongan Regency is generally more directed towards social assistance such as the distribution of basic necessities and sarongs every Eid al-Fitr holiday, compensation for orphans every month of Ramadhan, distribution of meat or sacrificial animals every day Eid al-Adha, blood donation, and other incidental social assistance such as assistance for flood victims and other natural disasters. In general, the implementation of PT Pisma Putra Textile's CSR is in accordance with the values ​​of Islamic business ethics, but its implementation is still relatively small and cannot be said to bring prosperity to society.

Building rural community resilience: The case of gem extraction in flood-affected areas of Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan gem mining and extractive industry communities experience enormous amounts of devastation from mass flooding events. Despite the pressing importance of understanding Gem Mining Community Resilience (GMCR) vis-à-vis community flood disaster management, the topic remains under researched. In order to address this gap in the extant literature, this study investigates the resilience of Sri Lankan gem mining communities’ social support network legacies (mitigation and adaptation) in response to a 2017 mass flooding event. Survey data were collected from 167 flood-affected gem mining households (GMHs) in fifteen local administrative units (GNDs) located in two Sri Lankan divisional secretariat divisions (DSDs). Social Network Analysis (SNA) is deployed to investigate the changing contours of social support network centralities before, during, and after the flooding event. Results suggest that the social support network legacies of the surveyed communities evolved over different flood-inundation phases in different geographical settings, thus improving GMCR. Flood inundation depth impacted network activities as well. Multi-actor social support networks working in concert with social capital legacies have shaped the processes of resource mobilization and flood victim livelihood revivification. These mitigation and adaptation practices, along with a GMCR framework developed in the study, may impart lessons for local and national policy, as well as for gem mining communities in other developing countries.

Description Of The Traumatic Experience Of The Dinar Indah Housing Flood Disaster Victims

Unpredictable natural disasters can traumatize a person and disrupt the victim's daily activities. Moreover, if this is the first time a victim has experienced a natural disaster. The trauma that arises and the impact on them will be different from the victims who have experienced several natural disasters. In this case, the researcher will provide an overview of the trauma experienced by flood victims who have only experienced floods once, a total of four people. This study uses qualitative data collection techniques using interviews, observation and phenomenological data analysis techniques. The results showed that natural disasters that occurred to participants caused trauma due to this unpleasant experience. This impacts participants who are more easily anxious and afraid when symptoms of natural disasters appear—looking at the results of the interviews in analyzing the symptoms of trauma felt by the participants and how disturbing they were in carrying out their daily activities.

Wading out the storm: Exploring the effect of flooding on energy poverty amidst disaster management strategies in Dar es Salaam

Although flooding is well-thought-out as one of the deadliest natural disasters, there is scarce evidence on how such an environmental shock affect energy poverty prevelence in a developing country context amidst the implementation of disaster risk management strategies. Using the Disaster Poverty Household Survey in Tanzania’s capital Dar es Salaam, we examine the effect of flooding on multidimensional energy poverty while estimating the moderation effects of non-structural ex-ante risk management strategies. After employing a myriad of robust methods, we observe that flooding increases energy poverty prevalence by about 32 %. The mediation analysis shows that income reduction serves as a pathway through which flooding affects energy poverty. Furthermore, estimates from the interaction analysis reveal how effective fiscal non-structural ex-ante risk management methods are in reducing the incidence of energy poverty among flood victims. However, the defense strategies were noted to be inefficient. These results provide policymakers with the necessary tools to create policies that address energy-related needs in areas affected by natural disasters, especially in developing countries.
