The study deals with the effect of a blockade of the septum on the action of physostigmine on hippocampal pyramidal cells. The septal transmission was blocked temporarily by injection of small amounts of a procaine solution into the septal region. In the normal animal physostigmine produces a regularization of the hippocampal EEG activity and at the same time an acceleration of hippocampal unit firing. Both effects of physostigmine are abolished temporarily by an interruption of septal transmission. In addition, such an interruption causes the hippocampal units not to fire at all for a short period of time.
