In-silico study of the impact of system design parameters on microcalcification detection in wide-angle digital breast tomosynthesis.

Accurate detection of microcalcifications ( ) is crucial for the early detection of breast cancer. Some clinical studies have indicated that digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) systems with a wide angular range have inferior detectability compared with those with a narrow angular range. This study aims to (1)provide guidance for optimizing wide-angle (WA) DBT for improving detectability and (2)prioritize key optimization factors. An in-silico DBT pipeline was constructed to evaluate detectability of a WA DBT system under various imaging conditions: focal spot motion (FSM), angular dose distribution (ADS), detector pixel pitch, and detector electronic noise (EN). Images were simulated using a digital anthropomorphic breast phantom inserted with clusters. Evaluation metrics included the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the filtered channel observer and the area under the receiver operator curve (AUC) of multiple-reader multiple-case analysis. Results showed that FSM degraded sharpness and decreased the SNR and AUC by 5.2% and 1.8%, respectively. Non-uniform ADS increased the SNR by 62.8% and the AUC by 10.2% for filtered backprojection reconstruction with a typical clinical filter setting. When EN decreased from 2000 to 200 electrons, the SNR and AUC increased by 21.6% and 5.0%, respectively. Decreasing the detector pixel pitch from 85 to improved the SNR and AUC by 55.6% and 7.5%, respectively. The combined improvement of a pixel pitch and EN200 was 89.2% in the SNR and 12.8% in the AUC. Based on the magnitude of impact, the priority for enhancing detectability in WA DBT is as follows: (1)utilizing detectors with a small pixel pitch and low EN level, (2)allocating a higher dose to central projections, and (3)reducing FSM. The results from this study can potentially provide guidance for DBT system optimization in the future.

Double low-dose CT angiography of craniocervical arteries using a test bolus of diluted contrast medium and a personalized contrast protocol

ObjectiveTo prospectively assess the value of a test bolus of diluted contrast medium (CM) combined with a personalized contrast protocol in craniocervical CT angiography (cc-CTA) with low radiation and CM doses. MethodsEighty-six consecutive subjects were divided into two groups at random (43 in each one). Group A: 100/Sn140 kVp, filtered back-projection reconstruction, iopromide (370 mgI/ml) 50 ml; Group B: 80/Sn140 kVp, iterative reconstruction, iodixanol (270 mgI/ml). In Group B, the test bolus contained 27 ml of diluted CM, a personalized protocol with low-concentration CM was used for angiography, and the test bolus injection duration in angiography remained the same. Artery values over 200 HU were considered significant. ResultsNo significant difference was found in the sex ratio, age, body weight, or body mass index when comparing the two groups. Image quality for all cases was found to be diagnostic. No significant differences were found in the arterial densities of the ascending aorta or basilar artery between the groups. The values of the common carotid artery, internal carotid artery, and middle cerebral artery in Group B were significantly lower. The effective dose and average iodine uptake were significantly lower in Group B. ConclusionWith double low-dose cc-CTA, test bolus scanning based on diluted CM combined with a personalized contrast protocol can yield diagnostic-quality images and significantly reduce the radiation and CM doses.

Value of vendor-agnostic deep learning image denoising in brain computed tomography: A multi-scanner study.

To evaluate the effect of a vendor-agnostic deep learning denoising (DLD) algorithm on diagnostic image quality of non-contrast cranial computed tomography (ncCT) across five CT scanners.This retrospective single-center study included ncCT data of 150 consecutive patients (30 for each of the five scanners) who had undergone routine imaging after minor head trauma. The images were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP) and a vendor-agnostic DLD method. Using a 4-point Likert scale, three readers performed a subjective evaluation assessing the following quality criteria: overall diagnostic image quality, image noise, gray matter-white matter differentiation (GM-WM), artifacts, sharpness, and diagnostic confidence. Objective analysis included evaluation of noise, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and an artifact index for the posterior fossa.In subjective image quality assessment, DLD showed constantly superior results compared to FBP in all categories and for all scanners (p<0.05) across all readers. The objective image quality analysis showed significant improvement in noise, SNR, and CNR as well as for the artifact index using DLD for all scanners (p<0.001).The vendor-agnostic deep learning denoising algorithm provided significantly superior results in the subjective as well as in the objective analysis of ncCT images of patients with minor head trauma concerning all parameters compared to the FBP reconstruction. Patient-derived PixelPrint phantoms for evaluating clinical imaging performance of a deep learning CT reconstruction algorithm.

Objective&#xD;Deep learning reconstruction (DLR) algorithms exhibit object-dependent resolution and noise performance. Thus, traditional geometric CT phantoms cannot fully capture the clinical imaging performance of DLR. This study uses a patient-derived 3D-printed PixelPrint lung phantom to evaluate a commercial DLR algorithm across a wide range of radiation dose levels.&#xD;&#xD;Method&#xD;The lung phantom used in this study is based on a patient chest CT scan containing ground glass opacities and was fabricated using PixelPrint 3D-printing technology. The phantom was placed inside two different size extension rings to mimic a small- and medium-sized patient and was scanned on a conventional CT scanner at exposures between 0.5 and 20 mGy. Each scan was reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP), iterative reconstruction, and DLR at five levels of denoising. Image noise, contrast to noise ratio (CNR), root mean squared error (RMSE), structural similarity index (SSIM), and multi-scale SSIM (MS SSIM) were calculated for each image.&#xD;&#xD;Results&#xD;DLR demonstrated superior performance compared to FBP and iterative reconstruction for all measured metrics in both phantom sizes, with better performance for more aggressive denoising levels. DLR was estimated to reduce dose by 25-83% in the small phantom and by 50-83% in the medium phantom without decreasing image quality for any of the metrics measured in this study. These dose reduction estimates are more conservative compared to the estimates obtained when only considering noise and CNR. &#xD;&#xD;Conclusion&#xD;DLR has the capability of producing diagnostic image quality at up to 83% lower radiation dose, which can improve the clinical utility and viability of lower dose CT scans. Furthermore, the PixelPrint phantom used in this study offers an improved testing environment with more realistic tissue structures compared to traditional CT phantoms, allowing for structure-based image quality evaluation beyond noise and contrast-based assessments.

Estimate and compensate head motion in non-contrast head CT scans using partial angle reconstruction and deep learning.

Patient head motion is a common source of image artifacts in computed tomography (CT) of the head, leading to degraded image quality and potentially incorrect diagnoses. The partial angle reconstruction (PAR) means dividing the CT projection into several consecutive angular segments and reconstructing each segment individually. Although motion estimation and compensation using PAR has been developed and investigated in cardiac CT scans, its potential for reducing motion artifacts in head CT scans remains unexplored. To develop a deep learning (DL) model capable of directly estimating head motion from PAR images of head CT scans and to integrate the estimated motion into an iterative reconstruction process to compensate for the motion. Head motion is considered as a rigid transformation described by six time-variant variables, including the three variables for translation and three variables for rotation. Each motion variable is modeled using a B-spline defined by five control points (CP) along time. We split the full projections from 360° into 25 consecutive PARs and subsequently input them into a convolutional neural network (CNN) that outputs the estimated CPs for each motion variable. The estimated CPs are used to calculate the object motion in each projection, which are incorporated into the forward and backprojection of an iterative reconstruction algorithm to reconstruct the motion-compensated image. The performance of our DL model is evaluated through both simulation and phantom studies. The DL model achieved high accuracy in estimating head motion, as demonstrated in both the simulation study (mean absolute error (MAE) ranging from 0.28 to 0.45mm or degree across different motion variables) and the phantom study (MAE ranging from 0.40 to 0.48mm or degree). The resulting motion-corrected image, , exhibited a significant reduction in motion artifacts when compared to the traditional filtered back-projection reconstructions, which is evidenced both in the simulation study (image MAE drops from 178 33HU to 37 9HU, structural similarity index (SSIM) increases from 0.60 0.06 to 0.98 0.01) and the phantom study (image MAE drops from 117 17HU to 42 19HU, SSIM increases from 0.83 0.04 to 0.98 0.02). We demonstrate that using PAR and our proposed deep learning model enables accurate estimation of patient head motion and effectively reduces motion artifacts in the resulting head CT images.

Lifelike PixelPrint phantoms for assessing clinical image quality and dose reduction capabilities of a deep learning CT reconstruction algorithm.

Deep learning CT reconstruction (DLR) has become increasingly popular as a method for improving image quality and reducing radiation exposure. Due to their nonlinear nature, these algorithms result in resolution and noise performance which are object-dependent. Therefore, traditional CT phantoms, which lack realistic tissue morphology, have become inadequate for assessing clinical imaging performance. We propose to utilize 3D-printed PixelPrint phantoms, which exhibit lifelike attenuation profiles, textures, and structures, as a better tool for evaluating DLR performance. In this study, we evaluate a DLR algorithm (Precise Image (PI), Philips Healthcare) using a custom PixelPrint lung phantom and perform head-to-head comparisons between DLR, iterative reconstruction, and filtered back projection (FBP) with scans acquired at a broad range of radiation exposures (CTDIvol: 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 19, and 20 mGy). We compared the performance of each resultant image using noise, peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), feature-based similarity index (FSIM), information theoretic-based statistic similarity measure (ISSM) and universal image quality index (UIQ). Iterative reconstruction at 9 mGy matches the image quality of FBP at 12 mGy (diagnostic reference level) for all metrics, demonstrating a dose reduction capability of 25%. Meanwhile, DLR matches the image quality of diagnostic reference level FBP images at doses between 4 - 9 mGy, demonstrating dose reduction capabilities between 25% and 67%. This study shows that DLR allows for reduced radiation dose compared to both FBP and iterative reconstruction without compromising image quality. Furthermore, PixelPrint phantoms offer more realistic testing conditions compared to traditional phantoms in the evaluation of novel CT technologies. This, in turn, promotes the translation of new technologies, such as DLR, into clinical practice.

Accurate reconstruction of 4D spectral–spatial images from sparse-view data in continuous-wave EPRI

In continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance imaging (CW EPRI), data are collected generally at densely sampled views sufficient for achieving accurate reconstruction of a four dimensional spectral–spatial (4DSS) image by use of the conventional filtered-backprojection (FBP) algorithm. It is desirable to minimize the scan time by collection of data only at sparsely sampled views, referred to as sparse-view data. Interest thus remains in investigation of algorithms for accurate reconstruction of 4DSS images from sparse-view data collected for potentially enabling fast data acquisition in CW EPRI. In this study, we investigate and demonstrate optimization-based algorithms for accurate reconstruction of 4DSS images from sparse-view data. Numerical studies using simulated and real sparse-view data acquired in CW EPRI are conducted that reveal, in terms of image visualization and physical-parameter estimation, the potential of the algorithms developed for yielding accurate 4DSS images from sparse-view data in CW EPRI. The algorithms developed may be exploited for enabling sparse-view scans with minimized scan time in CW EPRI for yielding 4DSS images of quality comparable to, or better than, that of the FBP reconstruction from data collected at densely sampled views.

A CT deep learning reconstruction algorithm: Image quality evaluation for brain protocol at decreasing dose indexes in comparison with FBP and statistical iterative reconstruction algorithms

PurposeTo characterise the impact of Precise Image (PI) deep learning reconstruction algorithm on image quality, compared to filtered back-projection (FBP) and iDose4 iterative reconstruction for brain computed tomography (CT) phantom images. MethodsCatphan-600 phantom was acquired with an Incisive CT scanner using a dedicated brain protocol, at six different dose levels (volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol): 7/14/29/49/56/67 mGy). Images were reconstructed using FBP, levels 2/5 of iDose4, and PI algorithm (Sharper/Sharp/Standard/Smooth/Smoother). Image quality was assessed by evaluating CT numbers, image histograms, noise, image non-uniformity (NU), noise power spectrum, target transfer function, and detectability index. ResultsThe five PI levels did not significantly affect the mean CT number. For a given CTDIvol using Sharper-to-Smoother levels, the spatial resolution for all the investigated materials and the detectability index increased while the noise magnitude decreased, slightly affecting noise texture. For a fixed PI level increasing the CTDIvol the detectability index increased, the noise magnitude decreased. From 29 mGy, NU values converged within 1 Hounsfield Unit from each other without a substantial improvement at higher CTDIvol values. ConclusionsThe improved performances of intermediate PI levels in brain protocols compared to conventional algorithms seem to suggest a potential reduction of CTDIvol.

An advanced approach to reconstruct CT images from limited-angle projections, reducing radiation dose and tube load.

The process of reconstructing CT scan images from limited angle projections is critical and requires strict adherence to the ALARA principle. This principle is designed to minimize radiation exposure while maintaining image quality. Our study utilized filter back-projection (FBP) and algebraic iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithms to reconstruct brain CT images from 200 projection lines and a 100 × 100 matrix size. By combining the results of a MATLAB function with the insights of a radiologist, we can produce high-quality images that decrease radiation dose and tube load. Our findings reveal that the algebraic method is superior to the filter back-projection in preserving image quality when utilizing limited-angle projections.

Simulation-Assisted Augmentation of Missing Wedge and Region-of-Interest Computed Tomography Data.

This study reports a strategy to use sophisticated, realistic X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) simulations to reduce Missing Wedge (MW) and Region-of-Interest (RoI) artifacts in FBP (Filtered Back-Projection) reconstructions. A 3D model of the object is used to simulate the projections that include the missing information inside the MW and outside the RoI. Such information augments the experimental projections, thereby drastically improving the reconstruction results. An X-ray CT dataset of a selected object is modified to mimic various degrees of RoI and MW problems. The results are evaluated in comparison to a standard FBP reconstruction of the complete dataset. In all cases, the reconstruction quality is significantly improved. Small inclusions present in the scanned object are better localized and quantified. The proposed method has the potential to improve the results of any CT reconstruction algorithm.

The effect of a pre-reconstruction process in a filtered backprojection reconstruction on an image quality of a low tube voltage computed tomography.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of pre-reconstruction process for low tube voltage computed tomography (CT) on image quality of filtered backprojection (FBP) reconstruction. Small and large quality assurance water phantoms (19 and 33cm diameter) were scanned on a third-generation dual-source CT with 70 kVp and 120 kVp at various dose levels. Image quality was assessed in terms of the noise power spectrum (NPS) and task-based transfer function (TTF). NPSs and TTFs in the small phantom were comparable between 70 and 120 kVp protocols. In the large phantom, the curves of the NPS changed and the TTF decreased even at the high-dose levels for 70 kVp protocol compared to 120 kVp protocol. Our results indicated that the pre-reconstruction process is performed in low tube voltage CT for large objects even for the FBP reconstruction and has an effect on the image quality.

Geometry Parameter Estimation for Sparse X-Ray Log Imaging

We consider geometry parameter estimation in industrial sawmill fan-beam X-ray tomography. In such industrial settings, scanners do not always allow identification of the location of the source–detector pair, which creates the issue of unknown geometry. This work considers an approach for geometry estimation based on the calibration object. We parametrise the geometry using a set of 5 parameters. To estimate the geometry parameters, we calculate the maximum cross-correlation between a known-sized calibration object image and its filtered backprojection reconstruction and use differential evolution as an optimiser. The approach allows estimating geometry parameters from full-angle measurements as well as from sparse measurements. We show numerically that different sets of parameters can be used for artefact-free reconstruction. We deploy Bayesian inversion with first-order isotropic Cauchy difference priors for reconstruction of synthetic and real sawmill data with a very low number of measurements.

Investigating the role of imaging factors in the variability of CT-based texture analysis metrics.

This study assesses the robustness of first-order radiomic texture features namely interquartile range (IQR), coefficient of variation (CV) and standard deviation (SD) derived from computed tomography (CT) images by varying dose, reconstruction algorithms and slice thickness using scans of a uniform water phantom, a commercial anthropomorphic liver phantom, and a human liver in-vivo. Scans were acquired on a 16cm detector GE Revolution Apex Edition CT scanner with variations across three different nominal slice thicknesses: 0.625, 1.25, and 2.5mm, three different dose levels: CTDIvol of 13.86 mGy for the standard dose, 40% reduced dose and 60% reduced dose and two different reconstruction algorithms: a deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR-high) algorithm and a hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithm ASiR-V50% (AV50) were explored, varying one at a time. To assess the effect of non-linear modifications of images by AV50 and DLIR-high, images of the water phantom were also reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP). Quantitative measures of IQR, CV and SD were extracted from twelve pre-selected, circular (1cm diameter) regions of interest (ROIs) capturing different texture patterns across all scans. Across all scans, imaging, and reconstruction settings, CV, IQR and SD were observed to increase with reduction in dose and slice thickness. An exception to this observation was found when using FBP reconstruction. Lower values of CV, IQR and SD were observed in DLIR-high reconstructions compared to AV50 and FBP. The Poisson statistics were more stringently noted in FBP than DLIR-high and AV50, due to the non-linear nature of the latter two algorithms. Variation in image noise due to dose reduction algorithms, tube current, and slice thickness show a consistent trend across phantom and patient scans. Prospective evaluation across multiple centers, scanners and imaging protocols is needed for establishing quality assurance standards of radiomics.

Newly-designed adaptive non-blind deconvolution with structural similarity index in single-photon emission computed tomography

Single-photon emission computed tomography SPECT image reconstruction methods have a significant influence on image quality, with filtered back projection (FBP) and ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) being the most commonly used methods. In this study, we proposed newly-designed adaptive non-blind deconvolution with a structural similarity (SSIM) index that can take advantage of the FBP and OSEM image reconstruction methods. After acquiring brain SPECT images, the proposed image was obtained using an algorithm that applied the SSIM metric, defined by predicting the distribution and amount of blurring. As a result of the contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and coefficient of variation evaluation (COV), the resulting image of the proposed algorithm showed a similar trend in spatial resolution to that of FBP, while obtaining values similar to those of OSEM. In addition, we confirmed that the CNR and COV values of the proposed algorithm improved by approximately 1.69 and 1.59 times, respectively, compared with those of the algorithm involving an inappropriate deblurring process. To summarize, we proposed a new type of algorithm that combines the advantages of SPECT image reconstruction techniques and is expected to be applicable in various fields.

Deep-Learning-Based Image Denoising in Imaging of Urolithiasis: Assessment of Image Quality and Comparison to State-of-the-Art Iterative Reconstructions.

This study aimed to compare the image quality and diagnostic accuracy of deep-learning-based image denoising reconstructions (DLIDs) to established iterative reconstructed algorithms in low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) of patients with suspected urolithiasis. LDCTs (CTDIvol, 2 mGy) of 76 patients (age: 40.3 ± 5.2 years, M/W: 51/25) with suspected urolithiasis were retrospectively included. Filtered-back projection (FBP), hybrid iterative and model-based iterative reconstruction (HIR/MBIR, respectively) were reconstructed. FBP images were processed using a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved DLID. ROIs were placed in renal parenchyma, fat, muscle and urinary bladder. Signal- and contrast-to-noise ratios (SNR/CNR, respectively) were calculated. Two radiologists evaluated image quality on five-point Likert scales and urinary stones. The results showed a progressive decrease in image noise from FBP, HIR and DLID to MBIR with significant differences between each method (p < 0.05). SNR and CNR were comparable between MBIR and DLID, while it was significantly lower in HIR followed by FBP (e.g., SNR: 1.5 ± 0.3; 1.4 ± 0.4; 1.0 ± 0.3; 0.7 ± 0.2, p < 0.05). Subjective analysis confirmed best image quality in MBIR, followed by DLID and HIR, both being superior to FBP (p < 0.05). Diagnostic accuracy for urinary stone detection was best using MBIR (0.94), lowest using FBP (0.84) and comparable between DLID (0.90) and HIR (0.90). Stone size measurements were consistent between all reconstructions and showed excellent correlation (r2 = 0.958-0.975). In conclusion, MBIR yielded the highest image quality and diagnostic accuracy, with DLID producing better results than HIR and FBP in image quality and matching HIR in diagnostic precision.

Image Quality and Lesion Detectability of Pancreatic Phase Thin-Slice Computed Tomography Images With a Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction Algorithm.

To evaluate the image quality and lesion detectability of pancreatic phase thin-slice computed tomography (CT) images reconstructed with a deep learning-based reconstruction (DLR) algorithm compared with filtered-back projection (FBP) and hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR) algorithms. Fifty-three patients who underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced CT including pancreatic phase were enrolled in this retrospective study. Pancreatic phase thin-slice (0.625 mm) images were reconstructed with each FBP, hybrid IR, and DLR. Objective image quality and signal-to-noise ratio of the pancreatic parenchyma, and contrast-to-noise ratio of pancreatic lesions were compared between the 3 reconstruction algorithms. Two radiologists independently assessed the image quality of all images. The diagnostic performance for the detection of pancreatic lesions was compared among the reconstruction algorithms using jackknife alternative free-response receiver operating characteristic analysis. Deep learning-based reconstruction resulted in significantly lower image noise and higher signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio than hybrid IR and FBP ( P < 0.001). Deep learning-based reconstruction also yielded significantly higher visual scores than hybrid IR and FBP ( P < 0.01). The diagnostic performance of DLR for detecting pancreatic lesions was highest for both readers, although a significant difference was found only between DLR and FBP in one reader ( P = 0.02). Deep learning-based reconstruction showed improved objective and subjective image quality of pancreatic phase thin-slice CT relative to other reconstruction algorithms and has potential for improving lesion detectability.

Coronary artery calcium quantification: comparison between filtered-back projection, hybrid iterative reconstruction, and deep learning reconstruction techniques.

The reference protocol for the quantification of coronary artery calcium (CAC) should be updated to meet the standards of modern imaging techniques. To assess the influence of filtered-back projection (FBP), hybrid iterative reconstruction (IR), and three levels of deep learning reconstruction (DLR) on CAC quantification on both in vitro and in vivo studies. In vitro study was performed with a multipurpose anthropomorphic chest phantom and small pieces of bones. The real volume of each piece was measured using the water displacement method. In the in vivo study, 100 patients (84 men; mean age = 71.2 ± 8.7 years) underwent CAC scoring with a tube voltage of 120 kVp and image thickness of 3 mm. The image reconstruction was done with FBP, hybrid IR, and three levels of DLR including mild (DLRmild), standard (DLRstd), and strong (DLRstr). In the in vitro study, the calcium volume was equivalent (P = 0.949) among FBP, hybrid IR, DLRmild, DLRstd, and DLRstr. In the in vivo study, the image noise was significantly lower in images that used DLRstr-based reconstruction, when compared images other reconstructions (P < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the calcium volume (P = 0.987) and Agatston score (P = 0.991) among FBP, hybrid IR, DLRmild, DLRstd, and DLRstr. The highest overall agreement of Agatston scores was found in the DLR groups (98%) and hybrid IR (95%) when compared to standard FBP reconstruction. The DLRstr presented the lowest bias of agreement in the Agatston scores and is recommended for the accurate quantification of CAC.

Implementation of AI image reconstruction in CT-how is it validated and what dose reductions can be achieved.

CT reconstruction has undergone a substantial change over the last decade with the introduction of iterative reconstruction (IR) and now with deep learning reconstruction (DLR). In this review, DLR will be compared to IR and filtered back-projection (FBP) reconstructions. Comparisons will be made using image quality metrics such as noise power spectrum, contrast-dependent task-based transfer function, and non-prewhitening filter detectability index (dNPW'). Discussion on how DLR has impacted CT image quality, low-contrast detectability, and diagnostic confidence will be provided. DLR has shown the ability to improve in areas that IR is lacking, namely: noise magnitude reduction does not alter noise texture to the degree that IR did, and the noise texture found in DLR is more aligned with noise texture of an FBP reconstruction. Additionally, the dose reduction potential for DLR is shown to be greater than IR. For IR, the consensus was dose reduction should be limited to no more than 15-30% to preserve low-contrast detectability. For DLR, initial phantom and patient observer studies have shown acceptable dose reduction between 44 and 83% for both low- and high-contrast object detectability tasks. Ultimately, DLR is able to be used for CT reconstruction in place of IR, making it an easy "turnkey" upgrade for CT reconstruction. DLR for CT is actively being improved as more vendor options are being developed and current DLR options are being enhanced with second generation algorithms being released. DLR is still in its developmental early stages, but is shown to be a promising future for CT reconstruction.

Pediatric low-dose head CT: Image quality improvement using iterative model reconstruction.

To evaluate the differences in pediatric non-contrast low-dose head computed tomography (CT) between filtered-back projection and iterative model reconstruction using objective and subjective image quality evaluation. A retrospective study evaluated children undergoing low-dose non-contrast head CT. All CT scans were reconstructed using both filtered-back projection and iterative model reconstruction. Objective image quality analysis was performed using contrast and signal-to-noise ratios for the supra- and infratentorial brain regions of identical regions of interest on the two reconstruction methods. Two experienced pediatric neuroradiologists evaluated subjective image quality, visibility of structures, and artifacts. We evaluated 233 low-dose brain CT scans of 148 pediatric patients. There was a ∼2-fold improvement in the contrast-to-noise ratio between gray and white matter in the infra- and supratentorial regions (p < 0.001) using iterative model reconstruction compared to filtered-back projection. The white and gray matter signal-to-noise ratio improved more than 2-fold using iterative model reconstruction (p < 0.001). Furthermore, radiologists graded anatomical details, gray-white matter differentiation, beam hardening artifacts, and image quality using iterative model reconstructions as superior to filtered-back projection reconstructions. Iterative model reconstructions had better contrast-to-noise and signal-to-noise ratios with fewer artifacts in pediatric CT brain scans using low-dose radiation protocols. This image quality improvement was demonstrated in the supra- and infratentorial regions. This method thus comprises an important tool for reducing children's exposure while maintaining diagnostic capability.

Comparison of Calcified Plaque Volume in Coronary Arteries using Filtered Back Projection and Intelli IP Advanced at CT-scan 128 Slice

Calcified plaque has a major effect on increasing plaque volume which can increase the risk of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). The use of Filtered Back Projection (FBP) on CT-scans still has flaws in terms of image quality that can result in errors in the calculation of plaque volume. Intelli IP Advanced is hitachi CT-scan’s Iterative Reconstruction (IR) type and can improve image quality compared to FBP. The purpose of this study is to find out the comparison of calcified plaque volume in coronary arteries using FBP and Intelli IP Advanced. This study used 38 samples of coronary artery blood vessels that had calcified plaque and reconstructed using the reconstruction of FBP and Intelli IP Advanced algorithms (Levels 1-3). Plaque calculation is done automatically using aquarius intuition edition application on CT-scan Hitachi SCENARIA 128 Slice. The results in this study found significant differences (p &lt; 0.05) in calcified plaque volume results with the use of FBP and Intelli IP Advanced algorithm reconstruction (Levels 1-3). However, significant differences are found only in algorithm reconstruction pairs (Intelli IP Advanced Level 1 and Level 3) that have a p &lt; 0.05. The conclusion is that IR affects the volume value of calcified plaque.
