Impact of Affective and Cognitive Variables on University Student Reading Comprehension

The problem of reading comprehension at the university level has not been sufficiently explored in the field of education research. Understanding written texts is an essential prerequisite for academic success during university. Consequently, reading comprehension challenges can influence the dropout rate at the university level. On the other hand, research has been conducted from a cognitive perspective, without considering affective variables such as reading motivation and its relationship with linguistic and psychological variables. In this study, five questionnaires were administered to a sample of 65 teaching students from different disciplines. The questionnaires dealt with linguistic dimensions such as reading comprehension, at lexical, textual, and discursive levels; psychological aspects such as reading motivation; and cognitive aspects such as working memory. The results obtained through bivariate and mediation analyses show the mediating role of vocabulary in reading comprehension and other cognitive and affective variables. In this context, working memory has a positive indirect effect on more explicit processing tasks in reading comprehension of long texts associated with discourse comprehension. Finally, intrinsic motivation has a positive indirect effect on reading fluency and also on the comprehension of short texts. It also correlates positively with vocabulary tasks. These results are relevant in order to establish a reading profile of university students who have reading comprehension problems, as found in this study.

Professional identity work of nurse practitioners and family physicians in primary care in Quebec and Ontario – a study protocol

BackgroundSolo medical practices in primary healthcare delivery have been abandoned in favor of interdisciplinary teamwork in most Western countries. Dynamics in interdisciplinary teams might however be particularly difficult when two or more autonomous health professionals develop similar roles at the practice level. This is the case of family physicians (FPs) and nurse practitioners (NPs), due to the fact that the latter might accomplish not only the traditional role proper to a nurse, but also several medical activities such as requesting diagnostic exams and prescribing medical treatments. The tensions that this overlap might generate and their implications in regard of the development of professional identities, and consequently of the quality of health care delivered, have been suggested, but rarely examined empirically. The goal of this study is to examine identity work, i.e., the processes of (re)construction of professional identities, of NPs and FPs working together in primary care interdisciplinary teams.MethodsA longitudinal, interpretive, and comparative multiple (n = 2) case study is proposed. Identity work theory in organizations is adopted as theoretical perspective. Cases are urban primary care multidisciplinary teams from two different Canadian provinces: Quebec and Ontario. Participants are NPs, FPs, managers, and patients. Data gathering involves audio-diaries, individual semi-structured and focus group interviews, observations, and archival material. Narrative and metaphor techniques are adopted for analyzing data collected. Within- and cross-case analysis will be performed.DiscussionFor practice, the results of this investigation will: (a) be instrumental for clinicians, primary care managers, and policy decision-makers responsible for the implementation of interdisciplinary teamwork in primary healthcare delivery to improve decision-making processes and primary care team performance over time; (b) inform continuing interdisciplinary professional development educational initiatives that support competency in health professionals’ identity construction in interdisciplinary primary care organizations. For research, the project will contribute to enriching theory about identity construction dynamics in health professions, both in the fields of health services and primary care education research.

Imagining home: Mahtab Hussain’s photography of diaspora and belonging

This paper responds to the works of photographers dealing with questions of diaspora, home, and belonging in the context of South Asia. I offer a close reading of the works and practices of Mahtab Hussain, a British-Kashmiri artist, by placing his photographs and practices in conversation with the work of scholars in the field of diaspora studies and educational research. Hussain’s photographic work offers a curriculum: a rewriting, a creation, an imagination, and a retelling of the story of the Azad Kashmiri diaspora and it is told from multiple axes—the homeland, those who moved, and the ways in which this migration impacted the lives of those who stayed back. Ultimately, Hussain’s artistic work invites educational researchers, theorists, and artists to rethink our notions of home, belonging, and diaspora; to imagine otherwise.

Implementation and Evaluation of a Team-Based Electrochemistry Module in a Large Undergraduate Class

Introductory chemistry courses at the undergraduate level offer students a foundation in chemistry principles and an opportunity to develop problem-solving skills. These principles and skill sets are widely applicable across disciplines, and thus first year chemistry courses are a gateway for many programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). While first-year chemistry courses are essential for STEM students, the resulting large-enrolment classes in universities can lead to challenges in implementing active learning and in helping students to reach the course learning outcomes. The evolving field of Chemistry Education Research (CER) offers data and insight for improving teaching and learning strategies at the undergraduate level. We propose and evaluate an electrochemistry team-based problem-solving module as an active learning component of a large, first-year, blended chemistry course. In this paper, we explore the process for developing the module and evaluate this learning approach through focus groups, a large class survey, and student experience interviews. Through a preliminary case study approach, our findings suggest the interactive module is useful for enhancing conceptual understanding and problem-solving in chemistry, and improving academic confidence in electrochemistry learning outcomes. Moreover, students valued their engagement with the team-based problem-solving modules as an opportunity to build community, learn collaboratively, and successfully approach relevant problems.

Teacher scaffolding for knowledge building in the educational research classroom

Knowledge Building is an educational model characterized by its emphasis on the collective responsibility of students to improve collective ideas. Previous studies have demonstrated the benefits of Knowledge Building in science education. This study implements this pedagogy in the field of educational research and pursues two objectives: i) to analyze the quality level of student contributions when participating in a collaborative space to enhance ideas, and ii) to analyze the scaffolding employed by teachers during the implementation. A mixed-method design (qualitative and quantitative) was employed to collect data. The participants consisted of 59 undergraduate social education students enrolled in an action-research course. Data on the quality of discourse were collected from the entries or notes created by students on the Knowledge Forum platform, while data on teacher scaffolding as perceived by the students was obtained through interviews. The results of this study demonstrate that most student contributions are of high quality, although participation shows a slightly uneven distribution. Furthermore, this study broadens our understanding of the teaching scaffolds that support students' knowledge construction in educational research and offers teaching scaffolds that can be applied in various constructivist learning contexts aimed at promoting student autonomy to collaborate in knowledge creation.

Stretching and cracking: becoming feminist posthumanist scholars in music education

ABSTRACT How and why did three PhD fellows become feminist posthumanist scholars within the field of music education research? Drawing on Karen Barad’s theorising of phenomena, not pre-existing entities, as the primary ontological unit and on Rosi Braidotti’s concept of the nomadic subject, we explore our research subjectivities as they are becoming in and through relations within the phenomenon of Western music education. Through the figuration of ‘voice’, we trace how and why our research voices stretch and crack as we go through a scholarly voice change transitioning from humanist to feminist posthumanist scholars. We tell performative stories that intra-actively take part in the ongoing re-configuring of the world, making matters such as children, care responsibilities, and ‘feminist killjoys’ become issues of music educational importance. Our aim is to offer companionship to others be(com)ing posthumanists, and to stretch the boundaries of music education research and practice.

Exploring educators' perception regarding the field of educational research between 2025 and 2030

Educational research holds considerable importance as a discipline within the education system, as it significantly impacts the improvement of educational effectiveness and the promotion of novel pedagogical and learning approaches. Educational research plays an indispensable role in providing insights for educational policy formulation, advancing scholarly understanding, evaluating and refining instructional frameworks, and ultimately enhancing the standard of education as a whole. A quantitative inquiry was undertaken, which comprised the participation of 316 instructors, administrators, and researchers. As envisioned in 2045, the purpose of this study is to assess educators' perspectives on educational research fields from 2025 to 2030. The results of the study revealed that educators possess a moderate degree of knowledge, while devoting significant attention to areas including the development of human resources, educational policies and mechanisms, program and model creation, and educational assessment. Following this, it is imperative that school administrators and policymakers create a conducive atmosphere that empowers educators to recognize and participate in research, while simultaneously surmounting barriers that restrict research access, specifically those pertaining to resources and time. In addition, a thorough assessment and reorganization of the training procedure are imperative for the educational system. This involves cultivating partnerships between research agencies and educational management in an effort to improve the expertise of educators and advocate for a methodology grounded in research.

Using large‐scale bibliometric data in higher education research: Methodological implications from three studies

AbstractAll fields of knowledge are challenged to adopt newer, more sophisticated methodologies to cope with growing complexity. Phenomena under study require further multidisciplinary and mixed methods collaborations to achieve expertise able to improve research strategies and practices. Furthermore, traditional methodological approaches face limits to their analytical reach. Here, we demonstrate opportunities from adopting newer, more sophisticated methodologies in the field of higher education (HE) research by comparing three case studies. We argue that such methods and data innovate the mapping and understanding of global HE. These studies uncover novel field characterizations, enabled via analysis of tens of thousands of HE authors and articles over several decades to assess how journal publication, topics, and levels of analysis (individual, organizational, and system) have evolved. Our results imply that to better understand the future of HE worldwide and to address growing challenges, newer methodological directions and data sources will be key to facilitate more comprehensive examinations of the globalizing field. However, our analysis also highlights the technical and learning challenges in implementing these methodologies; thus, we argue for the need to promote more sophisticated methodological training of current and future generations of HE researchers as well as strengthened collaborations across disciplinary, methodological, and cultural boundaries.

Redefining assessment: Creating a groundbreaking prototype for domain affective in project-based learning

This research aims to design a prototype of affective domain self-assessment in project-based learning (PjBL). The design process of the instrument prototype in this study combines the aspects of the affective domain in Bloom’s taxonomy with PjBL stage. The design of this instrument is a self-assessment. The design method of the affective domain self-assessment instrument prototype for PjBL includes determining the objectives and specifications of the test, developing the framework, preparing the blueprint, and determining the measurement scale. The validity test used in the design of this instrument prototype is content validation conducted by experts’ validators from doctoral students in the field of educational research and evaluation and education management. Qualitative content validation using face validity to examine the appropriateness of the instrument prototype design with the purpose of the instrument developed. Secondly, quantitative content validity using Lawshe’s content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI). The results obtained showed that CVR value of the panelists was scattered from zero, where half of the panelists stated that the item was relevant, to one, where all panelists stated that the item was relevant, the distribution of CVR ratio was mostly at 0.75. CVI index price is 0.6083, which is very favorable.

Research on the path of local colleges participating in community education of affordable rental housing in industrial parks

The affordable rental housing community in industrial parks has become a large-scale community, but little attention has been paid to this type of community education. Therefore, based on the concept of educational equality, this project aims to explore the path of local colleges participating in community education for affordable rental housing in industrial parks. With convenient samples, empirical research is conducted on the current situation and residents’ needs of affordable rental housing community education in the Qianwan New Area Industrial Park. And it has been found that community residents have a high willingness to learn on one hand, however, on the other hand, there are few types of community education to meet their demand; Although there are many public space resources, the utilization of scene spaces is far from sufficient. Based on these findings, this research explores and proposes the paths for local colleges to participate in community education for affordable rental housing in industrial parks through resource sharing models, in-depth community services for all-age residential groups, the cultivation of application-oriented talents to promote the integration of industry and education and enriching spiritual connotation of community education content. By enhancing the quality of all-age residents, namely, the new citizens including industrial workers and their relatives, it can promote the construction of a learning-oriented society and contribute to the realization of common prosperity. This study has certain theoretical and practical significance in enriching the research field of community education, promoting social integration of new citizens, and helping to achieve common prosperity.

Systematic Review of International Student Mobility in Higher Education

The objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive review of the educational sciences and social sciences literature about international student mobility that was published in the Web of Science database between 1997 and 2023. In the research, 550 publications that had been scanned by the WOS database were examined concerning their yearly publication counts, citation counts, publishing journals, cited authors, publishing and cited nations, fields of application, keywords employed, and article themes. Every article was analyzed using the Vosviewer software. It was found that 530 articles were published in the English language in terms of language of publication. The most cited articles dealt with equal chances and Erasmus student mobility. Higher education, educational mobility, and international students are the most frequently used terms in the publications, whereas distinction is the least frequently used keyword. The majority of articles on the topic are published in the Journal of Higher Education. The field of educational research published the majority of the articles. The evaluation of international student mobility in the fields of sociology, psychology, and educational administration has been rather restricted. The concept of international student mobility encompasses not only educational mobility but also movements related to social justice, inequality reduction, risk group management, and educational prestige.

Gender inclusiveness in student learning materials: Study of elementary school context in Indonesia

This study intends to evaluate the gender inclusivity in learning and education research field's growth trend from 2013 to 2023. The steps of the research are as follows: (i) assembling the tools and materials; (ii) organizing meetings; (iii) screening; (iv) visualizing; and (v) reviewing the data and outcomes that have been published. There were 988 articles in the keyword search results for "Gender," "Inclusiveness," "Learning materials," "Elementary School," and "Indonesia." A more equal and inclusive learning environment for all students can be achieved by include gender in student learning materials, according to the research findings. Students are more likely to feel appreciated and respected when they recognize themselves in the learning materials. Additionally, it supports and equalizes constructive gender roles and works to dispel harmful gender stereotypes.

Expanding Education Researchers' Access to Classroom Observation Data With a Remote and Cost-Effective Video Data Collection Protocol.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated long-term shifts to virtual instruction among most US schools presented notable challenges among education researchers. Ongoing projects conducted in school settings experienced sudden losses of access to teacher and student participants, in many cases leading to severe interruptions to data collection efforts. Perhaps most notably, upon returns to in-person instruction in the 2021/22 academic year most schools instigated strict policies limiting the number of non-school personnel who could enter school buildings, including researchers conducting in-person data collections. As such, many researchers had to find alternative means to gather data. In this paper, we offer a new protocol that we created in response to these challenges that allows for the secure and fully remote collection of video data in school settings. This new protocol not only addressed the immediate needs of the focal study but also addresses some of the most notable barriers to collecting classroom video data in the field of education research at large. In this paper, we describe the initial development and application of this protocol among a local study of elementary teachers, as well as the scaling of this protocol in a study of elementary teachers in multiple states. It is our hope that this protocol can expand education researchers', practitioners', and policymakers' access to classroom video data.

Evaluating the quality of posthuman music education research: diffracting quality criteria through response-ability

ABSTRACT Although encompassing a variety of research approaches, qualitative research in music education shares the assumption that reality is socially constructed; it takes this construction to be based on the specific perspective of the individual human; and it considers epistemology and ontology to be different fields of study. The posthuman theory of agential realism, on the other hand, argues that the world is becoming through intra-actions; it decentres the individual humanist subject; and it studies onto-epistemology – practices of knowing-in-being. Considering these fundamental differences, the quality criteria of qualitative research are not applicable to posthuman music education research. Nevertheless, posthuman research is concerned with the ethics of research and how to response-ably and ethically take part in the world’s becoming. Thus, the emerging field of posthuman music education research must develop other ways of evaluating research beyond the quality criteria found in qualitative methodologies. This paper argues that diffraction – both as a physical and musical phenomenon and as a philosophical concept – might be a fruitful approach. By reading quality criteria diffractively through the agential realist concept of response-ability, it poses critical and creative questions, moving us towards evaluating the quality of posthuman music education research on its own terms.

Teachers’ use of data from digital learning platforms for instructional design: a systematic review

AbstractData-based decision-making is a well-established field of research in education. In particular, the potential of data use for addressing heterogeneous learning needs is emphasized. With data collected during the learning process of students, teachers gain insight into the performance, strengths, and weaknesses of their students and are potentially able to adjust their teaching accordingly. Digital media are becoming increasingly important for the use of learning data. Students can use digital learning platforms to work on exercises and receive direct feedback, while teachers gain data on the students’ learning processes. Although both data-based decision-making and the use of digital media in schools are already widely studied, there is little evidence on the combination of the two issues. This systematic review aims to answer to what extent the connection between data-based decision-making and the use of digital learning platforms has already been researched in terms of using digital learning data for further instructional design. The analysis of n = 11 studies revealed that the use of data from digital learning platforms for instructional design has so far been researched exploratively. Nevertheless, we gained initial insights into which digital learning platforms teachers use, which data they can obtain from them, and how they further use these data.

Agential Cuts for Justice: Honoring Complexity in Educational Research through Intersectional Design Dimensions

This article explores the complexity and challenges of making decisions regarding which theories and social categories (e.g. race, class) should be emphasized in justice-centered research that includes participants’ identities as key variables in the design. Drawing on theories of intersectionality, agential realism, and complexity, the author proposes four intersectional design dimensions to help justice-centered researchers honor complexity: reflection on self and purpose; making agential cuts; complexifying social categories; and intersectional and collaborative re-view. Each dimension is illustrated with theory and empirical examples, mostly drawing from the field of educational research. By attending to and continually revisiting agential cuts related to social categories in conversation with community members, researchers can better represent layered, complex, and changing phenomena.

Improved matrix model of sequence grid partition based on vector space sampling

In information technology and data science predictive analysis work, the goal is to infer guess values as accurately as possible. A more densely spaced grid of points should be set as a tool for operating measurement models. It has a wide range of applications in psychology, education and other social science research fields. Although the grid seems to meet the requirements of further improving the accuracy of reasoning and guessing from a certain point of view, it also means complex calculations. When multiple false values fall between another grid point, the traditional Data Oriented Architecture fails. To guarantee the accuracy and efficiency of the calculation, it is necessary to solve the problem of excessive noise in the prediction of samples in meta-learning to solve the uncertainty caused by the noise database data or the assumption of the matrix model. This paper proposes a grid partition movable inference least squares method, that is, the sparse Bayesian least squares method based on the grid minimum matrix. The method is used for solving the problem that the prediction noise of the sample in the meta-learning is too large, to solve the uncertainty brought by the generated noise database data or the array matrix model assumption. According to the Symplectic Bayesian learning of the sequence matrix model, the basic parameters for processing the input sample database data are determined. The sparse Bayesian algorithm solution is used on the grid, combined with the off-grid inference guess of the sequence matrix model and the grid division. We set a coarse grid of points around the grid of false values. The rough point grid division is set, and the grid division around the false value is divided in detail. Then select more appropriate meta-learning parameters to clean up data. In the experiment analysis, we take the small sample study as the scene and carry on the concrete analysis to the experiment. The test proof in the fitting degree of the algorithm adopted in the paper surpasses the Support Vector Machine (SVM) and the k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm by 3.5% and 6.4% respectively. The convergence effect surpasses the contrast plan above 10 and has a bigger superiority in the inference factor thrust. It proves that the optimization method in this paper has a strong promotion effect for the application of data forecasting systems in various industries, and has theoretical value as well as practical significance.

A Literature Review of Verbal Interaction Between Teachers and Students in High School English Listening and Speaking Classes Based on iFIAS

In 2017, the curriculum nature of English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools (2020 Revision) emphasized that students should improve their ability of "autonomy, cooperation and inquiry", and "interaction" has become a key word in the field of educational research and practice. Flanders interaction analysis system (FIAS), proposed by American scholar Flanders, is a method to quantify the new orientation of classroom interaction. This paper reviews and collates the thesis from two aspects: "Classroom teacher-student verbal interaction" and "Flanders interactive analysis system", hoping to make some contributions to the research of teacher-student verbal interaction classroom in China.

교육학 연구방법으로서 머신러닝 기법 적용에 대한 고찰

The aim of the study is to discuss the technical and ethical considerations regarding the current applications of the emerging data science techniques in the field of education. Based on the literature review, this study provides an overview of machine learning approaches that have been used to answer to educational research agenda in South Korea. By comparing the logical features of these computational techniques to the conventional statistical methodologies, the authors highlight the unique challenges and opportunities associated with educational data science and discuss what that means to developing scientific knowledge in the field of education research. The authors argue the importance of the awareness of the differences in data conditions and causal inferences between computational approaches and conventional statistical modelings. Computational techniques using big data are not a magical tool to discover knowledge. This study explains why researchers’ domain knowledge and rigorous data preparation have bigger impacts on drawing reliable and meaningful information for educational intervention. This study encourages critical inquiry into the implications of data science for education. By revisiting the goals of public education, the authors call for the future research to host open discussion of the potential of educational data sciences.
