Exploring innovative approaches to fundraising for palliative care

Palliative care is a holistic approach aimed at improving the quality of life for those facing life-limiting illnesses and their families. Palliative care services often face financial constraints that restrict their ability to reach all those in need. There are difficulties accessing traditional funding mechanisms; therefore, innovative fundraising strategies are required to sustain and expand palliative care initiatives. In this paper, diverse fundraising approaches for palliative care are described, based on group discussions and collective brainstorming sessions by clinicians undergoing a Fellowship in Palliative Care. Fundraising approaches that were deemed innovative, yet feasible to apply in each locality, were shortlisted and described, with their strengths and challenges outlined in detail. These approaches include art and photography exhibitions, “piggy-bank” projects, community-based fundraising, charity shops, lottery and lucky draws, shuttle bus services, grants from international organizations and collaborative networks, the use of tap-on technology, festive events, and restaurant partnerships. It is hoped that through these innovative approaches, collaborative efforts, strategic planning, and resource mobilization, it would be possible to generate funds to develop and provide palliative care services for those in need to fulfill a fundamental human right.

The Loincloth, a Textile Technology through Time in Congo-Kinshasa. An Ethnosociological Study Among Women in Kinshasa

It would be uncertain if, in fact, textile technology in Congo-Kinshasa has not followed the evolution of clothing over time. The loincloth is a piece of clothing that corroborates a culture based on the civilization of a people. This fabric represents respect for certain texts linked to morality in women as well as in men. For the Congolese woman, the loincloth represents a textile technology which vibrates to the rhythm of creation and production of models which constitutes the ingenuity of the couturier artists in a workshop. This study is part of the impact of textile technology for holding cultural-ethnic events, in particular: national holidays, customary weddings, prayer evenings, gala evenings, etc. Thus, the persuasive theory (BARABARS H., 2009) provides a favorable view in the semiology of clothing communication on the need to dress Congolese women in loincloths. This theory is linked to the mechanisms of cognition through the abstraction inherent in the idea and the notions learned in thought. In experimental psychology, in humans, we distinguish scales of conscious and unconscious perceptions, also called implicit or subliminal. This distinction has been extended to other animals to the extent that it is recognized or, to another extent, can be trained and conditioned to indicate whether or not they have perceived a stimulus. Fashion offers its non-inevitability for the maintenance of the textile and clothing industry. This theorization relating to persuasion appeals to the senses, the mind, ideas, the moment and time for clothing fashion. It is sensory and "immediate" as the senses deliver direct information, and reverberate in people's culture on respect for the morals and customs surrounding an evening or a festive event. Thus, through surveys carried out in Kinshasa, this study will focus on the necessity of women's clothing in loincloths and its impact in Congolese culture.

Festive Leisure and Rural Sport in the Basque Mugak: Sare and Extalar Cases

ABSTRACT This paper describes and analyses two cross-border sports festivals in the western Pyrenees: the Day of the Smugglers of Sare and the Festival of the Tradition of the wood pigeons hunt of Lizaieta (Etxalar-Sare). The selected examples show how border communities use rural sports in festive contexts to bring together people from both sides of the border (emic limit) and to express their thoughts about the state border. To address this research, an ethnographic methodology based on the observation of festive events and interviews with participants has been employed. The article addresses the identity of this border area whose inhabitants do not consider themselves entirely French, Spanish, or Basque, but all at once under the self-designation of fronterako jendea (the people of the border). In short, our study examines the role that local culture plays in defining and shaping border areas.

Cultural Event Development Model for Quality Improvement of Tourism Event: Case of the 3rd Fishing Boat Festival in Sungsang Village IV, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra Province

Tourism related to events is a representation of the selling power of the location where the event is held. Festival events have an important role in increasing the selling value of destinations, but this study found that the 3rd Fishing Boat Festival event has not been packaged properly and there is no target market database targeted as tourists. This study aims to create a model for the development of cultural festivals, based on 5 basic stages, namely research, design, planning, coordination, evaluation and compiling a template for providing a database of targets and target tourists using the definable, sizeable, reachable, relevant segmentation method. This study used a combination method or mixed method with a sequential explanatory design with a sample of 100 respondents with 3 data collection techniques, namely by direct observation, document study and interview. This research resulted in 5 stages consisting of 40 steps of festival event management, as well as the targeted tourist segmentation profile. The research contributes to the achievement of the goal of improving the quality of cultural events in tourism villages.

A Conceptual Discussion Related to Festival Events in Malaysia

This study explores the rapidly growing subject of festival event management in Malaysia's travel and tourist industry, emphasizing the cultural, social, and economic effects of festivals. The project aims to improve festival management efficiency by identifying stakeholder concerns and investigating best practices. Through a conceptual analysis of 24 papers from Emerald, Science Direct, and Scopus, the study emphasizes the significance of continuous innovation, management frameworks such as EMBOK, and strategic planning. The findings suggest that addressing gaps in administrative practices and specialized education can significantly improve the effectiveness and sustainability of Malaysia’s festival events.

Commemorating festive performances in popular print in sixteenth‐century Italy☆

AbstractThe aim of this article is to show that the popular print sold and distributed during and after festive events, such as Carnival, had an impact on the commemoration and shaping of festive culture in early modern Italy. That is, the mass medium of print that had begun to shape European cultures, especially in Italy where Venice was one of Europe's first major printing centres, created festive pamphlets and small books that were attractive for individuals in various cities in Northern and Central Italy. This becomes apparent not only from the sources themselves but also from the connections that exist between these sources and historical and theatrical contexts. A study of popular print related to festive events addresses the most important criticisms of festival studies, namely that festivals were primarily local affairs, which would prevent researchers from making a meaningful contribution to festive culture studies on a larger scale. This article aims to overcome this by studying a selection of affordable pamphlets and small books, presenting the Carnivalesque text La guerra di Carnovale contro la Quaresima, which was intended for large audiences.

UNESCO 2003 Convention paved way for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). It defines the ICH as practices, representations, expressions as well as knowledge and skills. Oral traditions and expressions include performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events, Knowledge and practices concerning nature, universe, and Traditional Craftsmanship. The main problem of Indian society is that the highly skilled persons are one side without Education and highly qualified academicians, technicians on the other hand have no skills. The unorganized employs acquire the skills on their own. Proper training is needed for skill enhancement and social commitment to involve them in curriculum and community development. RRI Yogyakarta Brand Communication at the 2022 Nusantara Student Festival Event

Current technological developments have provided significant changes to information media, Information and communication media companies need to always innovate to maintain the company's image and remain the people's choice. The research aims to determine RRI Yogyakarta's brand communication at the 2022 Nusantara Student Festival event. This research uses a qualitative descriptive case study approach to explore and explore in depth. The theory used is brand communication strategy theory with brand visualization (logo) indicators. The research results show that the brand communication strategy implemented by RRI Yogyakarta includes a logo that is disseminated through branding media at the FPN 2022 event location and through Instagram social media, then direct marketing carried out door-to-door and radio broadcasts, social media via Instagram platform, promotions carried out include offers of collaboration and the use of influencers, marketing events through organizing the 2022 Nusantara Student Festival event, as well as sponsorship in the form of service support.

Residents' perceived social sustainability of food tourism events

Amid the need for inclusive growth and well-being in sustainable tourism, residents' social sustainability needs must be understood. Based on self-perception and social exchange theories, this study examines residents' perceptions of the social sustainability of food festival events. Focusing on an East-West culinary fusion festival in Macau, the Macau Food Festival, 460 residents are surveyed to ascertain their perceptions of the social sustainability attributes, social sustainability impacts, and quality of life outcomes. Results of six direct and two moderation relationships revealed residents' perceptions of social sustainability attributes of the food festival event are a major predictor of the perceived impacts on the community and resident quality of life. A higher perceived quality of life was found to positively impact place attachment, support for tourism, and prosocial behaviors. The degree to which social sustainability attributes of the food festival impact residents' quality of life, though different, is positive for attendees and non-attendees implying that positive perceptions could be inferred through both introspection and extrospection. It, further, suggests the need for destination management organizations to understand residents' social sustainability needs of the food tourism events to introduce attributes that augment residents' quality of life and positive responses to tourism development.

Traditional Sports, Indigenous Heritage, and Tourism Branding: Pè-sapèan Bangkalan in Madura, Indonesia

Tourism branding in the sports industry shows positive labeling that is used to attract public interest from tourist destinations. It becomes interesting when pè-sapèan can combine sports, cultural heritage and attractions in tourism branding. The method used is to use a systematic literature review to analyze potential opportunities for traditional sports, traditional heritage and tourism branding by collecting articles via Google Scholar. Events in the world of sports industry need a platform as a means to develop into an industrial orientation. In Bangkalan Regency, the annual event that is always held is the Traditional Sports Festival. This Traditional Sports Festival event is not only a place to exercise together but also to encourage enthusiasm, contribution and collaboration to jointly preserve traditional games, especially in Bangkalan, namely Pè-sapèan Bangkalan. In Bangkalan, various sporting events, such as the DISPORA CUP and the DISBUDPAR CUP are still ongoing, this is clear evidence that the development of sports marketing still exists and continues to increase. The traditional Pè-Sapèan sports game was often played by children in the past on Salt Island, with a minimum of three people playing. The game is a replica of Madurese culture, Kerapan Sapi. However, the cow and the jockey both use people, so the game pattern; starting from the start line to the finish line. The team that arrives first is the winner. The traditional sports game Pè-Sapèan can be interpreted as having become extraordinary capital to be developed to preserve the traditional heritage of Bangkalan Regency. This will be a forum for continuing livelihoods by combining cultural heritage capital and community self-organization. Pè-Sapèan traditional sports games can increase the community's self-control capacity towards traditional heritage assets. It would be a win-win if the role of local government could be to develop sports tourism resources, improve sports tourism services, and appoint functional government departments in building tourism branding.

Common aspects of scenography in outdoor ritual performances: an exploratory study

This paper explores common aspects of scenography in outdoor Ritual performances Rural, ceremonial, Rituals and festive events present the performance environments or atmospheres and engage people making a platform on which their views, experience, lifestyle, and beliefs system are shared. These rituals contain the origins of theatre and scenography as type of art. Mostly, these platforms are structured and built on religious, spiritual, and devotional grounds. It is the composition of space, text, research, performance, performers, spectators (devotee) sound, lighting, and colour and composition. People of Batticaloa, in general, are involved themselves creating rituals, fairs, and festivals. This study focuses on the Maariyamman ritual in Kalumunthanvely, Batticaloa district to examine scenography aspects of ritual and investigate the practice, creation and presentation. This study analyzes how participants organize scenery in nature, how scenography aspects function in the Maariyamman ritual, and how the materials are identified and executed in outdoor performance. The study examines the space, text, colour, composition, performers, and spectators. Moreover, the study explores the disclosure of its character type, determination of the space of action. Further, the study ensures the understanding of scenography aspects and the process of the ritual performance. The study uses both primary and secondary data to understand common aspects of the scenography in ritual performance. In this study i) the researcher’s observation during the rituals and ii) interviews with participants and devotees are primary tools of data collection. And secondary data are obtained from the source materials in libraries, online, which include both published and unpublished works that are related to scenography and rituals.

Culinary tourism: exploring cultural diplomacy through gastronomy festivals in Turkey and Italy

PurposeThe primary objective of this research is to draw a comparative analysis between Turkey and Italy in terms of how festival events function as catalysts for the endorsement of regional culinary delicacies. The study endeavours to elucidate the role of these festivals in fortifying the regional gastronomic landscape of both nations.Design/methodology/approachAdopting a comprehensive comparative methodology, this study meticulously scrutinises the gastronomy festivals spanning diverse geographical locales in both Turkey and Italy. Consideration is given to the standout food and beverage items spotlighted at these events and the venues where they are hosted. The research design takes into account the extensive cultural and geographical spectrum that characterises Turkey and Italy. The primary research method comprises web content analysis techniques. This method involves analysing textual data from online sources pertaining to gastronomy festival events in both countries. Web content analysis is instrumental in evaluating how such festivals are deployed in promoting indigenous gastronomic products and exploring the intricate dynamics between brand identity and brand image.FindingsThe research outcomes underscore the pivotal role that festival events play in elevating regional gastronomic products' profile in Turkey and Italy. It highlights the top 10 festivals and the most popular local culinary items on digital platforms. Additionally, the study offers a side-by-side comparison of the most celebrated gastronomic products in Turkey versus those that receive prominence in Italy.Originality/valueThis study enriches academic understanding by dissecting the nuances of how festivals contribute to the promotion of local gastronomic treasures. By juxtaposing Turkey and Italy, this research provides valuable insights into the influence of festivals on regional culinary promotion across diverse cultural milieus. This study makes substantial contributions to the fields of gastronomy, tourism, and brand promotion.

The ‘Black Pete’ debate in Flemish newspapers: from conflict to moderation

ABSTRACT In recent years, a lot of academic attention has been paid to the public discussion on ‘Black Pete’ (Zwarte Piet) in the Low Countries. Black Pete is a much-debated blackface character which is part of the Saint-Nicholas tradition – a yearly festive event taking place at the beginning of December associated with gifts and celebration. ‘Tradition’ versus ‘racism’ seem to be the main arguments in the debate. The current study analyses the debate as it evolved in Flanders from 2012 until 2022, applying Critical Discourse Analysis to find out how the thinking about the event and the Black Pete character, as reflected in the newspapers, changed over a decade. Our sample consists of 143 articles from the four most read newspapers in Flanders (De Standaard, De Morgen, Het Laatste Nieuws, Het Nieuwsblad). All journalistic genres were included, news reports as well as opinion articles, but also readers’ letters. Based on an analysis of naming, modality and evidentiality (Fairclough [2013]. Critical discourse analysis: The critical study of language. Routledge; Halliday [1994]. An introduction to functional grammar. Arnold), we illustrate and demonstrate how the tone of the debate gradually changed from a discourse of conflict into a discourse of moderation and appeasement.

Joining the Math Circus: exploring advanced mathematics through collaborative hands-on activities and performative storytelling

This paper details a qualitative study examining the experience and motivation of participants, facilitators, and organizers of the Math Circus, an event hosted by the University of Arkansas Honors College in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as part of the university’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The aim of the Math Circus was to entice participants to explore advanced mathematical concepts through collective mathematical art creations and dramatic storytelling of comic tales around the history behind mathematics. The study was carried out in two phases; an autoethnographic case study during the event; and a series of deep, semi-structured interviews with participants, facilitators, and organizers. The study examined pedagogical motivations behind the event’s activities and their mathematical content, as well as the experiences of the interviewees. Findings indicate that an interactive and festive event like the Math Circus is likely to encourage confidence to explore mathematical concepts further.

The authors also describe the festive events such as the student geodetic relay race “Geo-Youth-2023”.

Foodism in Ireland: feeding foodie philosophy or showing a shift in contemporary food culture?

ABSTRACT This paper examines contemporary food culture in Ireland through the phenomenon of foodism and the habits and traits expressed through the subculture of foodies. Elements and actors of the Irish food scene are also considered. Qualitative research was applied to investigate the five research objectives posed. This featured six in-depth interviews with “key informants” from Ireland’s tourism sector, educational sector, food sector, and a state food agency, conducted during 2020. The study draws insights from the fields of cultural studies and sociology. Thematic analysis was applied as part of the methodology process, from which five themes developed from the data findings. These are: (1) An evolving Irish food culture, (2) Two perceptions of Irish food, (3) A breakdown of hierarchies, (4) Influencing factors, (5) State body remits. The primary research reveals that industry experts and academics concur that Irish food and culture have “evolved” from a more traditional cuisine and culture and that these are dynamic entities. In addition, it establishes that there is a “hunger for food” amongst a small but growing cohort of Ireland’s population, who wish to gain information via food media and to access food experiences such as culinary courses, gastro tours and food festival events.

Quantifying the global film festival circuit: Networks, diversity, and public value creation.

Film festivals are a key component in the global film industry in terms of trendsetting, publicity, trade, and collaboration. We present an unprecedented analysis of the international film festival circuit, which has so far remained relatively understudied quantitatively, partly due to the limited availability of suitable data sets. We use large-scale data from the Cinando platform of the Cannes Film Market, widely used by industry professionals. We explicitly model festival events as a global network connected by shared films and quantify festivals as aggregates of the metadata of their showcased films. Importantly, we argue against using simple count distributions for discrete labels such as language or production country, as such categories are typically not equidistant. Rather, we propose embedding them in continuous latent vector spaces. We demonstrate how these "festival embeddings" provide insight into changes in programmed content over time, predict festival connections, and can be used to measure diversity in film festival programming across various cultural, social, and geographical variables-which all constitute an aspect of public value creation by film festivals. Our results provide a novel mapping of the film festival circuit between 2009-2021 (616 festivals, 31,989 unique films), highlighting festival types that occupy specific niches, diverse series, and those that evolve over time. We also discuss how these quantitative findings fit into media studies and research on public value creation by cultural industries. With festivals occupying a central position in the film industry, investigations into the data they generate hold opportunities for researchers to better understand industry dynamics and cultural impact, and for organizers, policymakers, and industry actors to make more informed, data-driven decisions. We hope our proposed methodological approach to festival data paves way for more comprehensive film festival studies and large-scale quantitative cultural event analytics in general.

Visitor outcomes from dark sky tourism: a case study of the Jasper Dark Sky Festival

ABSTRACT Dark sky tourism is a growing, but under-studied sector of ecotourism. While some research has examined the economic impacts, regional sustainability, and management of dark sky tourism, researchers know little about tourist experiences and outcomes. This study seeks to determine visitor outcomes (satisfaction, learning, attitudes, and behavior changes) among participants at the Jasper Dark Sky Festival in Alberta, Canada. Visitors were middle-aged, balanced between genders, traveled an average of 430 km, and were primarily urban-based. Most were first-time visitors, were present 2 or more days, and attended over 5 festival events. Respondents reported high satisfaction levels, due to the low cost and diversity of events, and welcoming nature of the community, presenters, and volunteers. Respondents reported many areas of learning, particularly about the night sky and night animals. Respondents had very positive attitudes about protecting dark skies, but only 42% planned to change any behaviors to protect dark skies. Study results will help festival organizers design dark sky tourism events to optimize visitor outcomes. In particular, festival organizers can address some barriers to behavioral change, such as stressing the value of dark skies and providing information about how to reduce light pollution.

Assessment of the impact of phenotypic traits and the festival of Eid Al-Adha on the prices of small ruminants in the livestock market "Sougr-Nooma" in Ouagadougou

This study aimed to assess the impact of phenotypic parameters and festive events on the price of small ruminants in Burkina Faso. A semi-directive survey using a quiz was conducted among sheep customers at the "Sougr-Nooma" livestock market in Tanghin, Ouagadougou. Data collection focused on Aid El Kebir and lasted for three weeks. The collected data included the prices and some physical characteristics (both quantitative and qualitative) of the animals. The survey covered 120 sheep sold on this market along with 120 buyers. Live weight was the most important quantitative phenotypic parameter in determining the price of sheep (r=0.91). For every kilogram increase in live weight, the selling price increased by 2703.71 F CFA. Removing live weight from the linear regression model revealed that withers height and thoracic girth could also determine animal prices. This model accounted for 53.12% of the variation in the price per animal. The significant influence of thoracic perimeter and withers height on the price of sheep could be attributed to their role in estimating live weight in the absence of a scale. Regarding qualitative traits breed and coat structure were the most influential factors on animal prices. Additionally, animal prices were significantly higher before the Tabaski festival compared to post-festival prices (84,605.26±9,087.59 vs. 61,905.94±3,941.53 F CFA).
