Effect of annealing temperature on crystallographic texture, magnetic and microwave properties of barium ferrite thin films

Due to it has large saturation magnetization (Ms), high magnetocrystalline anisotropy field and high ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequency, barium ferrite (BaM) has attracted more and more attentions in the fields of magnetic recording media, permanent magnets and microwave devices. Here, BaM thin films were deposited on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates, and the effect of annealing temperature on the microstructure, magnetic and microwave properties of barium ferrite thin films was investigated in detail. It is found that when the BaM thin film was annealed at 1035 °C, it has good properties. The XRD data provide clear evidence that the BaM thin films have high c-axis orientation, and the Lotgering factor is as high as 0.96. The AFM morphology show that BaM grains are out of the film plane, and they are hexagonal. The magnetic hysteresis curves indicated that both saturated magnetization (4πMs), remanence ratio and coercive (Hc) for out of plane increase with increasing Ta first, then decreased, and get the maximum value at 1035 °C. The ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurement show that the FMR linewidth is 143 Oe@50 GHz, it means that this this sample has low microwave loss in millimeter wave loss, and the FMR absorption can be tuned by applied magnetic field. These results make sure that this BaM thin film is possible use in millimeter wave devices such as filers, circulators and isolators.

Novel synthesis of CuFe2O4/g-C3N4 based on microwave ferromagnetic resonance effect for the thorough removal of TC in mariculture wastewater under natural sunlight

Superior separation of photogenerated carriers holds the key to intensive degradation of tetracycline (TC) in mariculture wastewater under natural sunlight. CuFe2O4/g-C3N4 (CFO/g) was synthesized by secondary microwave co-precipitation (SMCP) based on the ferromagnetic resonance absorption effect. Under the reaction conditions of pH = 6.5, CFO/g = 0.2 g/L, [H2O2] = 1 mM, 99.0 % TC removal was realized in 40 min. Enhanced performance for TC removal in high-salinity environments heavily relied on elevated ionic strength and rapid electron transfer of CFO/g in conjunction with high-salinity interactions. To ecologically remediate mariculture wastewater under natural sunlight, we immobilized powdered CFO/g to a ferrite magnet and devised a continuous flow reaction apparatus, incorporating the controlled injection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), to achieve the 100 % TC removal and simultaneously undertake the pretreatment of other contaminants (∼70 %). Ultimately, a safety assessment demonstrated that the degradation of mariculture wastewater by the CFO/g photo-Fenton system is a reliable and efficient technology, and the growth of clownfish remained unimpaired. SMCP successfully accelerated the conversion of high-valent metal ions to low-valent ones and eased the activation barriers of H2O2, enabling various active species to execute their respective roles productively. Innovative application of microwave resonance to enhance the magnetic properties of CFO/g and to support the equilibrium conversion of elemental valence states in high-salinity environments from real wastewater.

Band gap, ferromagnetic resonance and strong microwave absorption of BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19 compounds and enhanced dielectric loss in BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19/carbon nano tube composites

The forbidden bandgap energy, magnetic properties, natural ferromagnetic resonance and microwave absorption are studied on the Zn2+ and Sn4+ doped BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19. The forbidden band gap of BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19 increases with the increasing doping content x from 1.80 eV up to 1.97 eV. The coercive field, the anisotropy field and the magnetocrystalline constant of BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19 decreases with the increasing doping. The natural ferromagnetic resonance is observed. The high permeability, accompanied with the ferromagnetic resonance, enables strong microwave absorption. BaFe10.4Zn0.8Sn0.8O19 has a wide effective microwave absorption bandwidth (RL≤-10dB) of 6 GHz with the material thickness below 2.5 mm in 11.4–17.4 GHz. The dielectric loss has little contribution to the excellent microwave absorption of BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19. The BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites significantly increase the permittivity. The high dielectric loss and the high magnetic loss further improve the microwave absorption. With a very thin thickness of 1.8 mm, BaFe10.4Zn0.8Sn0.8O19/CNT has a bandwidth of 7.1 + GHz of 10.9–––18 + GHz. With the material thickness thinner than 3 mm, BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19/CNT composites have very broad effective microwave absorption bandwidth of 11.4+, 10.7 and 10.7 GHz, with x = 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0, respectively. It illustrates that both BaFe10.4Zn0.8Sn0.8O19 and BaFe12-2xZnxSnxO19/CNT composites are very promising microwave absorbers.

Enhancement of spin to charge conversion efficiency at the topological surface state by inserting normal metal spacer layer in the topological insulator based heterostructure

In this study, we report efficient spin to charge conversion (SCC) in the topological insulator (TI) based heterostructure (BiSbTe1.5Se1.5/Cu/Ni80Fe20) by using spin-pumping technique, where BiSbTe1.5Se1.5 is the TI and Ni80Fe20 is the ferromagnetic (FM) layer. The SCC, characterized by inverse Edelstein effect length (λIEE) in the TI material, gets altered with an intervening Copper (Cu) layer, and it depends on the interlayer thickness. The introduction of Cu layer at the interface of TI and FM metal provides a new degree of freedom for tuning the SCC efficiency of the topological surface states. The significant enhancement of the measured spin-pumping voltage and the increased linewidth of ferromagnetic resonance absorption spectra due to the insertion of Cu layer at the interface indicate a reduction in spin memory loss at the interface that resulted from the presence of exchange coupling between the surface states of TI and the local moments of FM metal. The temperature dependence (from 8 to 300 K) of the evaluated λIEE data for all the trilayer systems, TI/Cu/FM with different Cu thicknesses, confirms the effect of exchange coupling between the TI and FM layer on the SCC efficiency of the topological surface state. This study offers promising ways for designing more efficient spin-charge conversion devices of the TI-based heterostructure by controlling the interface effects.

Theory design and dynamic testing of Magnetic Tunnel Junction (MTJ) spin microwave detection chip

The magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) chip has recently been verified in numerous studies as a microwave detection or microwave radiation unit. In this paper, a theoretical model for a coplanar chip incorporating an MTJ for microwave detection is established, and it is shown how the electromagnetic characteristics of the MTJ varied with the frequency, amplitude, and phase of the microwave electromagnetic field in simulations and experiments. Based on several studies of our research, meaningful conclusions are provided to direct the processing and dynamic detection of microwave electromagnetic fields in MTJ chips. Initially, the micrometer-sized MTJ chip was fabricated by using a lithography process directly on the signal line of coplanar waveguide. It was found that the detection chip voltage (μV level) increased linearly with microwave power from 3 dBm to 20 dBm. The frequency of the microwave field and the static magnetic field along the easy axis cause the probe voltage of the chip to change in a wave-peak–valley curve, and the amplitude of the probe signal slightly increases with frequency. Additionally, theoretical and experimental results indicate that this is a combined result of spin magneto-resistance and ferromagnetic resonance absorption. In the experiments, two microwave beams were applied in opposite, and the resulting detection voltage clearly represented an interference effect. The test signal’s phase also changed according to a trigonometric function, with a maximum value varying between a few and several hundreds of μV. The aforementioned findings demonstrate that MTJs can theoretically and practically be utilized as spectrometers to detect microwave electromagnetic fields.

An Effective Method of Magnetic Hyperthermia Based on the Ferromagnetic Resonance Phenomenon

Nickel and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles have been synthesized using the chemical precipitation method; the nanoparticle sizes were found to be 63 ± 22 and 26 ± 4 nm, respectively. The static hysteresis loops and Mössbauer spectra have been measured. It is shown that cobalt ferrite powders are magnetically harder than nickel ferrite powders. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) curves have been studied. It is found that the FMR absorption for cobalt ferrite is observed at room temperature and above. The time dependences of the nanoparticle warm-up under FMR conditions have been measured. The maximum temperature changes for nickel ferrite and cobalt ferrite particles are 8 and 11 K, respectively. Using the example of cobalt ferrite powder, the possibility of effectively heating of particles in the FMR mode in their own field without using a DC magnetic field source is shown. The observed effect can be used in magnetic hyperthermia.

Critical curves in NiFe/FeMn bilayers with varying antiferromagnetic layer thickness

The effect of antiferromagnetic (AF) layer thickness on exchange bias was studied in a series of NiFe(50 nm)/FeMn(t) bilayers through both irreversible and reversible experiments at room temperature. The exchange bias was evaluated in the sample plane both through measurement of the major hysteresis loops and probing the reversible susceptibility. The critical curve was constructed to map the angular dependence of the magnetization switching and exchange bias, which is found to evolve as a function of AF layer thickness. Ferromagnetic resonance absorption was measured at several frequencies and angles, and angular-dependent absorption curves were plotted. A comparison is made between the recorded exchange bias using the three methods. The measurements reported are supported by simulations under a generalized Stoner–Wohlfarth model, and general limitations of the experiment are discussed.

Effects of Interfacial Layers on Magnetization Dynamics of [Fe75Co20Cu5/Cu(x)]30 Multilayer Nanowires

A series of highly ordered multilayer [FeCoCu/Cu( x )]30 ( $0 \le x \le 40$ nm with FeCoCu layer thickness fixed 1000 ± 100 nm) nanowire arrays in alumina membrane (200 nm diameter) was fabricated by electrodeposition from a single electrolytic bath. The body-centered cubic (bcc) phase of FeCoCu-alloy separated by a well-defined face-centered cubic (fcc) phase of Cu spacer is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The objective of the present investigation is to tune the magnetic properties through inter- and intra-wire interactions between the FeCoCu layers separated by non-magnetic Cu( x ) layers in the multilayer nanowire array. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) study was performed in a flip-chip geometry to explore the magnetization dynamics. FMR measurements confirm the decrease of resonance field ( $H_{r}$ ), whereas resonance linewidth ( $\Delta H$ ) and FMR absorption increase with the increase in the Cu layer thickness. It may be argued that through inter-/intra-nanowires interactions, the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert damping provides the most physically sensible magnetization relaxation in multi-layered nanowires system. The values of the Gilbert damping parameters (intrinsic and extrinsic), obtained from the FMR linewidth analysis, exhibit a decrease from FeCoCu nanowire to [FeCoCu/Cu(5 nm)] nanowire. With further increase in the Cu thickness, both these parameters were observed to have increased.

Magneto-Optical Isolator Based on Ultra-Wideband Photonic Crystals Waveguide for 5G Communication System

This paper presents a novel magneto-optical isolator based on an ultra-wideband and high efficiency photonic crystals (PCs) waveguide and gyromagnetic ferrites. The three-dimensional numerical simulation finds that the photonic crystals waveguide’s (PCW) transmission efficiency rises with its height and width. The corresponding experiments are performed by using a triangular lattice Al2O3 dielectric posts array in 5G millimeter wave band. The measured transmission efficiency is up to 90.78% for the optimal PCs waveguide structure, which has ultra-wide operating bandwidth from 23.45 to 31.25 GHz. The magneto-optical isolator is designed by inserting two rectangular gyromagnetic ferrites into the PCs waveguide. Due to the contrast between the effective permeability of the left and right circular polarization waves passing through the magnetized ferrite sheets, the ferromagnetic resonance absorption of the forward and reverse waves is different. By using finite element method, the isolation is optimized to be 49.49 dB for the isolator and its relative bandwidth reaches 8.85%. The high isolation, broadband, and easy integration indicate that our designed magneto-optical isolator has significant advantage in 5G communication systems.

Highly Efficient Wideband Microwave Absorbers Based on Zero-Valent Fe@γ-Fe2O3 and Fe/Co/Ni Carbon-Protected Alloy Nanoparticles Supported on Reduced Graphene Oxide.

Electronic systems and telecommunication devices based on low-power microwaves, ranging from 2 to 40 GHz, have massively developed in the last decades. Their extensive use has contributed to the emergence of diverse electromagnetic interference (EMI) phenomena. Consequently, EMI shielding has become a ubiquitous necessity and, in certain countries, a legal requirement. Broadband absorption is considered the only convincing EMI shielding solution when the complete disappearance of the unwanted microwave is required. In this study, a new type of microwave absorber materials (MAMs) based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated with zero-valent Fe@γ-Fe2O3 and Fe/Co/Ni carbon-protected alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using the Pechini sol-gel method. Synthetic parameters were varied to determine their influence on the deposited NPs size and spatial distribution. The deposited superparamagnetic nanoparticles were found to induce a ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) absorption process in all cases. Furthermore, a direct relationship between the nanocomposites’ natural FMR frequency and their composition-dependent saturation magnetization (Ms) was established. Finally, the microwave absorption efficiency (0.4 MHz to 20 GHz) of these new materials was found to range from 60% to 100%, depending on the nature of the metallic particles grafted onto rGO.

Collective magnetization dynamics in nanoarrays of thin FePd disks

We report on the magnetization dynamics of a square array of mesoscopic discs, fabricated from an iron palladium alloy film. The dynamics properties were explored using ferromagnetic resonance measurements and micromagnetic simulations. The obtained spectra exhibit features resulting from the interactions between the discs, with a clear dependence on both temperature and the direction of the externally applied field. We demonstrate a qualitative agreement between the measured and calculated spectra. Furthermore, we calculated the mode profiles of the standing spin waves excited during a time-dependent magnetic field excitations. The resulting maps confirm that the features appearing in the ferromagnetic resonance absorption spectra originate from the temperature and directional dependent inter-disc interactions.

Microstructural and magnetic properties of rGO/MnFe2O4 nanocomposites; relaxation dynamics

In the present investigation, nanocomposite (NC) of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) with three different (rGO/MnFe2O4) weight-ratio of rGO have been synthesized using a simple and efficient one-step hydrothermal route. The crystallinity, morphology and magnetic studies were conducted using X-ray diffraction (XRD), confocal Raman imaging and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM).Detailed ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) studies were performed in the field-sweep mode at different applied frequencies ranging from 5 to 30 GHz using a vector network analyzer (VNA). We have realized a nano-composite layer of rGO/MnFe2O4 NC on top of coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission lines to perform FMR experiments. The largest ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) absorption of −28 dB was observed for 0.06 g GO doped MnFe2O4 at the 22 GHz frequency. This absorption at FMR is found to be tunable by rGO concentration in manganese ferrite. We have also evaluated various relaxation/damping parameters of the nanocomposites. The experimental values of FMR linewidths were fitted using two micromagnetic models, and hence intrinsic and extrinsic damping parameters were obtained for nanocomposite samples. The damping parameters were observed to influenced by the rGO weight ratio. Therefore the developed nanocomposite can find various applications in the area of microwave monolithic devices and circuits like filters, phase shifters, circulators, etc.

Effect of Hydrogen Gas on the FMR Absorption Amplitude of Pd/Co Layered Films

In this paper, we carry out a detailed investigation of a recently discovered effect of the increase in the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) amplitude for cobalt–palladium layered films in the presence of hydrogen gas (H2). We find that this effect is not correlated with the FMR peak shift in the presence of H2 found previously. This follows from observation of a vanishing shift but a change in the amplitude of 69.5% for a sample having a 70 nm thick cobalt layer studied in this paper. The change in amplitude is found to be mainly due to the narrowing of the FMR linewidth, which has its origin in a change in the damping parameter $\alpha $ . The increase in the amplitude allows us to measure H2 concentration in nitrogen as a carrier gas in a very broad range—from 0.05% to 70% with sensitivity higher than in our previous papers.

Highly Stable In-Plane Microwave Magnetism in Flexible Li0.35Zn0.3Fe2.35O4(111) Epitaxial Thin Films for Wearable Devices.

With the advances in artificial intelligence and communication technologies, flexible microwave magnetic materials have become essential for flexible microwave detectors, wearable microwave sensors, and flexible spintronics. Here, a highly stable in-plane (IP) ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and a tunable out-of-plane (OOP) FMR character are demonstrated in the flexible microwave magnetic Li0.35Zn0.3Fe2.35O4 (LZFO) (111) epitaxial thin films under external mechanical bending. Both the IP FMR line width and resonance field ( Hr) are basically unchanged when the sample was bent under an external tensile or compressive bending strain and deformation. However, the OOP FMR spectra (including Hr and absorption peak) could be tuned by mechanical bending, i.e., the LZFO sample possesses two OOP FMR absorption peaks at an external bending curvature. Meanwhile, excellent mechanical antifatigue and mechanical retention characteristics have also been obtained in the LZFO sample. The highly stable IP and the tunable OOP FMR spectra in the same LZFO sample with excellent mechanical antifatigue character have a promising prospect in microwave magnetic devices and flexible spintronics.

Ferromagnetic resonance in core-shell nanoparticles with multitype exchange anisotropy

A phenomenological model for magnetodynamics of core-shell nanoparticles is presented. The term core-shell implies, prima facie, that the spin structures (phases) of the particle components are different, no matter whether or not they are chemically identical. The model takes in two main assumptions. First, the interphase boundary is a thin (in comparison with the core and shell scales) transition layer with strongly inhomogeneous spin arrangement. Second, the shell is a granular structure consisting of spin-ordered crystallites with a wide spread of internal anisotropy, including a fraction of ones with extremely high coercivity. The framework developed on that basis, despite its simplicity, provides a unified explanation for the major specific properties of magnetic core-shell particles. Namely, (i) the growth of observed anisotropy field with reduction of the particle size, (ii) the presence of fixed unidirectional anisotropy, and (iii) the existence of rotatable anisotropy that emerges in a threshold manner under an external field. For a nanoparticle with the above-described core-shell architecture, a theory of ferromagnetic resonance with allowance for the superparamagnetic effect is worked out, and the ferromagnetic resonance absorption lines of noninteracting ensembles of such particles are presented. It is demonstrated that all the qualitatively different contributions to the core-shell-induced anisotropy could be evaluated from the data on a temperature sweep of the resonance field. Moreover, to do that, it suffices to use just the samples with random orientation of the particle axes. Preliminary assessment shows that a set of measurements for complete evaluation of the exchange-mediated anisotropies is feasible with the aid of a standard $X$-band spectrometer.

Ferromagnet/Superconductor Hybridization for Magnonic Applications

AbstractIn this work, a new hybridization of superconducting and ferromagnetic orders is demonstrated, promising for magnonics. By measuring the ferromagnetic and spin wave resonance absorption spectra of a magnetostatically coupled permalloy/niobium bilayer at different temperatures, magnetostatic spin wave resonances with unconventional dispersion are observed. The mechanism behind the modified dispersion, confirmed with micromagnetic simulations, implies screening of the alternating magnetostatic stray fields of precessing magnetic moments in the ferromagnetic layer by the superconducting surface in the Meissner state.

Shape Anisotropy and Resonance Mode Guided Reliable Interconnect Design for In-plane Magnetic Logic**Supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No 61302022.

Dipole coupled nanomagnets controlled by the static Zeeman field can form various magnetic logic interconnects. However, the corner wire interconnect is often unreliable and error-prone at room temperature. In this study, we address this problem by making it into a reliable type with trapezoid-shaped nanomagnets, the shape anisotropy of which helps to offer the robustness. The building method of the proposed corner wire interconnect is discussed, and both its static and dynamic magnetization properties are investigated. Static micromagnetic simulation demonstrates that it can work correctly and reliably. Dynamic response results are reached by imposing an ac microwave field on the proposed corner wire. It is found that strong ferromagnetic resonance absorption appears at a low frequency. With the help of a very small ac field with the peak resonance frequency, the required static Zeeman field to switch the corner wire is significantly decreased by ∼21 mT. This novel interconnect would pave the way for the realization of reliable and low power nanomagnetic logic circuits.

Tuning the ferromagnetic resonance by doping strontium hexa-ferrite nanopowders

Mg–Ti substituted strontium hexa-ferrites nanopowders (SrFe12−x(MgTi)x/2O19, x = 0–3) were prepared by the sol–gel method. The morphology, structure and composition of the nanostructures were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction. The effect of Mg–Ti doping on the magnetic properties of the powders was investigated by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) at ambient temperature. Experimental results showed that the materials exhibit hexagonal structures with tunable magnetic properties. The saturation magnetization and the coercive field (Hc) decreased through the Mg and Ti substitution. FMR proved that by incorporation of Mg and Ti in strontium ferrite lattice, crystalline anisotropy, and microwave absorption can be tuned. SrFe12−x(MgTi)x/2O19 ferrites are good candidate for applications at X-band microwave frequencies. A low field absorption signal was observed with the same phase as the FMR absorption in all doped ferrites.

Impact of Hydrogen Gas on the Inverse Spin Hall Effect in Palladium/Cobalt Bilayer Films

The influence of hydrogen gas absorption on the inverse spin Hall effect (iSHE) is measured in palladium/cobalt bilayer films. The iSHE is driven by ferromagnetic resonance in the Co layer and manifests as a dc voltage across the Pd layer. In the presence of hydrogen gas, the iSHE peak shifts downward in applied field together with the ferromagnetic resonance absorption peak for the material. In parallel, an increase in the iSHE peak height and width is measured.

An integrated tunable isolator based on NiZn film fabricated by spin-spray plating

An innovative type of tunable isolator with a planar comb-like microstrip transmission line, which generate circular polarization magnetic field, has been realized with polycrystalline NiZn ferrite thick films fabricated by spin-spray plating (SSP) process with thickness of 10μm. The phase compositions, microstructure, magnetic hysteresis loop, and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth of NiZn ferrite thick films have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer, respectively. The NiZn ferrite thick films possess 4800Gauss saturation magnetization and 190Oe FMR linewidth measured at X-band. With an in-plane dc magnetic bias perpendicular to the comb-like microstrip transmission line, the transmission direction of left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) were proved to be opposite. The non-reciprocal ferromagnetic resonance absorption leads to 11.6dB isolation and 5.78dB insertion loss at 17.57GHz with magnetic bias field of 3.5kOe. Furthermore, with external in-plane magnetic fields range from 0.5kOe to 3.5kOe, the central frequency was tuned from 5.63GHz to 17.57GHz. The state-of-the-art tunable isolator with a planar comb-like microstrip transmission line exhibit a great potential to be applied in different microwave components and radar system.
