The Occurrence of Glycolate Dehydrogenase and Glycolate Oxidase in Green Plants

Homogenates of various lower land plants, aquatic angiosperms, and green algae were assayed for glycolate oxidase, a peroxisomal enzyme present in green leaves of higher plants, and for glycolate dehydrogenase, a functionally analogous enzyme characteristic of certain green algae. Green tissues of all lower land plants examined (including mosses, liverworts, ferns, and fern allies), as well as three freshwater aquatic angiosperms, contained an enzyme resembling glycolate oxidase, in that it oxidized l- but not d-lactate in addition to glycolate, and was insensitive to 2 mm cyanide. Many of the green algae (including Chlorella vulgaris, previously claimed to have glycolate oxidase) contained an enzyme resembling glycolate dehydrogenase, in that it oxidized d- but not l-lactate, and was inhibited by 2 mm cyanide. Other green algae had activity characteristic of glycolate oxidase and, accordingly, showed a substantial glycolate-dependent O(2) uptake. It is pointed out that this distribution pattern of glycolate oxidase and glycolate dehydrogenase among the green plants may have phylogenetic significance.Activities of catalase, a marker enzyme for peroxisomes, were also determined and were generally lower in the algae than in the land plants or aquatic angiosperms. Among the algae, however, there were no consistent correlations between levels of catalase and the type of enzyme which oxidized glycolate.

Fern and Fern-Allies of Eastern Terai, Nepal

The present work is based on one year 2001-2002 of intensive and extensive study of ferns of eastern terai, Nepal, in the field, library, laboratory and herbarium. It includes 35 species of ferns and fern allies belonging to 28 genera and 23 families from eastern Terai, Nepal. Out of these the dominant families are Polypodiaceae (5), Adiantaceae (4), Pteridaceae (3). Three families Schizaeaceae, Thelypteridaceae, Dryopte-ridaceae are represented by 2 species. Problematic Groups in the Fern Allies and the Treatment of Subspecific Categories

Fern allies in North America comprise about 80 species, distributed in five genera and representing as many families and orders. At first glance, it would seem that the taxonomic problems among them would all be infraspecific and the title for this paper emphasizes the subspecies level. Such an assumption, however, is misleading. I would like first to discuss briefly the supraspecific problems, then shift to the infraspecific. Perhaps the highest supraspecific problem at present is the divisional and subdivisional status of the fern allies. I do not intend to discuss it in detail but

An Advanced Course in Pteridophyte Biology in Costa Rica

The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) was founded in 1962 as a consortium of several North American universities, the University of Costa Rica, and the Smithsonian Institution, with the common purpose of promoting scientific study in the tropics. This has been implemented by renting office, classroom, and laboratory space at the University of Costa Rica near San Jos6. Although the University is the center of operations, most of the class time is spent in the field at various field stations. In each two-month session there is usually one class in the fundamentals of tropical biology and one or more advanced courses in various aspects of botany, zoology, geography, or forestry. Courses are given in February-March and July-August and are open to all North and South American graduate students and occasionally to postdoctoral students. The pteridophyte flora of Costa Rica is extremely rich. The vascular flora of the country is estimated to contain approximately 10,000 species, of which perhaps 800 are ferns and fern allies. There are few places in the world with as great diversity in such a small area, which is less than that of West Virginia. The greater diversity in Costa Rica compared with the other Central American countries is due to the greater number of habitats. A backbone of mountains divides the country lengthwise. Tetrad markings of pteridophytic spores and their evolutionary significance

A comparative study of the morphology of the spores of ferns and fern allies was carried out during which, among others, representatives of 277 genera of ferns were investigated. In 29% of all cases the spores are exclusively trilete, in 49%, exclusively monolete, and 22% are mixed or exhibit transitional apertures. Trilete and monolete spores together with all types of transitional apertures were observed sometimes within the same species. Zonate spores were found in 4% of the investigated cases. Trilete spores are found since Silurian times zonate and monolete spores since the Middle Devonian. The progression from trilete to zonate and/or to monolete can be traced through the evolution of all orders of the pteridophytes. A better food supply for the immature spore developing from the spore mother cell may have been the survival advantage. Progression from zonate spores may have led to the monosaccate spores of the coniferous line. Progression from monolete spores to presulcate and/or to sulcate pollen grains may have led to the pteridospermous line of reduction of the microgametic generations.
