of topics related to the AIBS-Flora North America Project. This particular symposium is intended as an introduction to certain problems as illustrated by the pteridophytes. Most of the problems to be discussed are not peculiar to the ferns and the fern allies, but will be encountered in many higher plant groups as well. It should be pointed out that each participant in the symposium is presenting his personal views and not giving the policy or opinions of the Flora Project itself.
