The purpose of the article is to highlight reliable facts and events related to Yu. V. Andropov - the iconic political figure of Soviet history. This study is based on a complex of new documentary collections from the funds of three archives: the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History, the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History and the National Archive of the Republic of Karelia. Various methodological approaches are used to study the personality of Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov. Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov was a famous politician and leader of the Soviet Union. Accordingly, a comparative historical analysis is used to study the issue taking into account political decisions, reforms, domestic and foreign policies, as well as its influence on Soviet society and the world political arena. The study of Andropov's personality through his biography, professional path, views, beliefs, work experience in various positions allows to understand his personality and influence on the events of that time. The historical period in which Andropov came to power is taken into account. In determining the features and nature of the development of Soviet society in those years, it is important to conduct a study of his personality in the context of the Soviet era. The methodology of psychological analysis allows us to better understand the personality of a politician, his motives, personal characteristics, character and influence on the decisions he makes. Comparing Andropov's activities with other Soviet leaders and politicians allows to identify his unique features, as well as evaluate his contribution to the development of the country. The use of various methodological approaches allows to explore the role of politics in the history of the Soviet Union and assess his influence on the political processes of that time. Personality and biography of Yu.V. Andropov as a person and politician are still shrouded in many mysteries and speculations, and is the subject of myth-making. The secrets of power of the future Chairman of the KGB of the USSR and General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee have practically not been studied. The beginning of Andropov's path to power was difficult years. More than once his political career was in jeopardy. And not only a career, but also existence itself. The authors of many publications about Andropov focus on searching for information of critical content and use contradictory information from unreliable sources. Modern publications often contain dubious interpretations of the military events in which Yu.V. Andropov had to act. This is especially true of the occupied territories of the union Karelo-Finnish Republic, in which Finno-Ugric peoples lived. The study revealed that the period in Karelia associated with the activities of Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov contributed to his development as a promising politician and gave him valuable experience in the leadership field. Analysis of the events of that time allows us to reveal many aspects of the political career of Yu.V. Andropov in the period from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Medical figures in Wang Ao Ji

Wang Ao was a famous politician and litterateur in the middle of Ming Dynasty. Wang Ao Ji comprehensively sorts out Wang's works for the first time, and collects all the poems and notes written by himself. A total of 38 physicians were recorded in Wang Ao Ji, among them, Wang Ao had close contacts with many physicians such as Zhou Geng, Zhou Xu'an, Sheng Rubi, Zhang Yangzheng and Chen Chong. Wang Ao and Zhou Geng are both core members of the literary society of Wuzhong, in the capital of Beijing. Wang Ao once wrote an epitaph for Zhou Xu'an, a tablet inscription for Sheng Rubi and a biography for Zhang Yangzheng. And Chen Chong once cured Wang's nephew's diarrhea caused by acne rash.The biographical records of physicians in Wang Ao Ji are highly reliable, and some medical information is the main source of official history and medical history works, which contains important historical value. Relevant contents about medical figures recorded in class of works, local chronicles, genealogy, anthology, notes and other ancient books, to a great extent, enrich biographical data of physicians, which is worth further research.

(A)symmetries in Memory and Directed Forgetting of Political Stimuli.

As political information becomes increasingly prevalent in all forms of media, it is becoming increasingly important to understand when and why biases in remembering such information occur. Using an item-method directed forgetting procedure, we conducted two online experiments to determine the efficacy of admonitions to forget politically charged stimuli that were either congruent or incongruent with participants' political beliefs. Participants viewed slideshows wherein each item combined the face of a famous politician (Donald Trump or Joe Biden) with a word that was positive, negative, or neutral in emotional valence. Each slide was followed by an instruction to remember or forget. After a brief filler task, a recognition test assessed their memory for both remember and forget slides and (in Experiment 2) assessed their beliefs about the truth of each word/face pairing and beliefs about the accuracy of their memory. The results showed that for both liberal and conservative participants, politically congruent stimuli were more conducive to recognition memory and more resistant to directed forgetting than politically incongruent or neutral stimuli. There were small asymmetries wherein conservatives showed greater biases in memory and other cognitive measures. We discuss possible explanations of the results and their implications.

Celebrity and the Cultural Nation.Thomas Mann’s Lotte in Weimar

Abstract Mann’s 1939 Goethe novel, Lotte in Weimar, is a valuable text through which to understand the role of celebrity in the literary and political landscape of the early 20th century. I explore the ways in which an engagement with the field of Celebrity Studies makes possible a reading of Mann’s Goethe as a palimpsest of the historical celebrity author, Mann, a 20th century celebrity author, and Hitler, Germany’s most famous politician in the media age. Mann’s own experiences in the spotlight, especially those gathered in his exile years, inform the social and familial relationships at the center of the novel. Furthermore, Mann takes an ironic stance towards the “Goethe Mythos,” thereby undermining the validity of the cult of genius and inviting a reading that recognizes its shared features with the cult of modern celebrity that made possible Hitler’s rise to power.

This article examines the publicistic legacy of Volodymyr Starosolsky (1878–1942), the Ukrainian public and political figure, scholar, and human rights defender of the first half of the 20th century. The main focus is on his political human rights popularization speeches from the time of his formation as a politician and lawyer (1899–1939). The publicistic characteristics of Volodymyr Starosolsky’s speeches and their genre features are analyzed. Starosolsky’s oratorical and publicistic styles are identified (evidential argumentation, language attributes, content, polemic, and suggestiveness of the discourse). The main sociocommunicative dominants of V. Starosolsky’s publications have been established, particularly nation-building, Ukrainian-centricity, social justice, and legal justice. The relationship between the main functions of Volodymyr Starosolsky’s speeches—the formation of public opinion and his development as a famous politician and lawyer – is determined. Осередок УАПЦ у Подєбрадах міжвоєнної ЧСР (1924-1939 рр.)

Th e purpose of the study is to characterize the activities of the Podebrady centre of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine in interwar Czechoslovakia. Th e research methodology is based on the principles of concrete-historical, problem-chronological approaches, objectivity, and integrity, as well as the use of methods of analysis and synthesis. Th e scientifi c novelty lies in refl ecting the solution of Ukrainian emigration to the issue of the Ukrainianization of the Church. Conclusions. Th e Podebrady Ukrainian Orthodox movement was represented by three separate groups of believers. Th e fi rst belonged to the canonical ju- risdiction of the Serbian Orthodox Church under Archbishop Gorazd (Pavlika, 1879–1942). The second, mostly “autocephalists”, – the Supreme Church Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church for emigration on the territory of the Czechoslovak Republic, headed by the famous politician Serhii Shelukhin (1864–1938) and the connoisseur of Ukrainian church life, specialist historian Vasyl Bidnov (1874–1935) – it was subordinate to the Constantinople to the patriarch. Archbishop Savvatii was the head of the group of “Ukrainian Praguers” (Vrabets, 1880–1952). Th e third group of Ukrainian emigrants joined the Russian Orthodox parish and recognized the authority of Bishop Serhii (Korolyova, 1881–1952). Th e emigration “autocephalous” centre arose in the resort town of Podebrady, 20 km from Prague, and had 182 Ukrainian Academy of Economics students and 51 teachers. From 1924 to 1939, Hryhoriy Melnyk (1893 – aft er 1939) was the Podebrady “autocephalists” pastor. Th e members of the Orthodox Brotherhood, named aft er Saints Cyril and Methodius, were active participants in the life of the Ukrainian emigration community in interwar Czechoslovakia. Th ey left the most noticeable mark not only in main- taining high morale but also in the material support of other exiles and their families in the fi ght against drunkenness, suicide, and eugenics.

N.V. Ustryalov’s College Years: Formation of the Politician, Publicist and Thinker (Onthe 130th Anniversary of his Birth)

The article considers the formation of N.V. Ustryalov’s personality, his spiritual, intellectual and professional development during his studies at Moscow University. 
 In addition, the paper reveals the circumstances and factors that had a great influence on N.V. Ustryalov during his student years, such as university
 lectures, seminars and communication with professors-teachers, participation in the student cadet faction and public life of the university, mastering the scientific and philosophical heritage, attending sessions of philosophical associations in
 Moscow, creative collaboration with outstanding figures of culture, scientific and public thought in Russia.
 The article emphasizes the role of Moscow University professors, such as E.N. Trubetzkoy, S.A. Kotlyarevsky, P.I. Novgorodtsev, in N. Ustryalov’s spiritual
 and professional development. Moreover, the paper highlights the great influence of the liberal-conservative ideas of P.B. Struve, a famous politician and publicist, the collection «Vekhi» («Landmarks») and the creative heritage of outstanding repre-
 sentatives of European and domestic thought (Heraclitus, Machiavelli, Hegel, Danilevsky, V. Solovyov, etc.) on the formation of his political views and worldview.
 The article gives the examples of socio-political activity and conflict situations between the law enforcement agencies and the student N. Ustryalov during his university years. It mentions his participation in the student delegation at the
 funeral of L.N. Tolstoy. The paper analyzes the topic and the content the student Ustryalov’s first
 articles published in the periodicals in Moscow and St. Petersburg, it emphasizes the accumulation of some experience in the publicist’s journalism. The article focuses on N.V. Ustryalov’sthesis, its content and scientific provisions that reflect important personality traits of the young scientist, his views
 and ideas about the surrounding world, the ways and methods of his cognition. In the end, the author of the article formulates the conclusion that the student years spent at Moscow University became an important stage in Nikolay
 Ustryalov’s personal development, his formation as a politician, publicist, scientist and thinker.

In his article, I examine the image of a political strategist, popular in Chinese historical cinema, the origin of which can be traced to historical chronicles and fiction. Analysis of their cinematographic representation allows to single out the characteristic features of this image, distinguishing it from the functionally close, yet not identical image of a noble minister. Further, I suggest that the literary and cinematic image of Zhuge Liang, the famous politician and strategist of the Three Kingdoms, serves as an archetype of a political and military advisor in general, and substantiate this hypothesis. Based on the analysis of sovereign-advisor relations, I make an assumption that the very image of an advisor, with their characteristic appearance, personality, and their relationship with their overlord, takes its origins in the self-presentation of shi— a social class of the Warring States period. The leading values in this class were intelligence, loyalty to the lord, and freedom. I suggest and support a hypothesis that there is a genetic connection between the image of an advisor and the teaching of Legalism. Counterbalancing and complement to this image in a costume series is the role of a noble minister, which has its ideological basis in the Confucian philosophy. Apart from that, I name some of the strategies of seizing and retaining power, as well as domestic and foreign policy strategies, frequently seen in TV shows. The analysis of political and administrative methods in many Chinese historical series indicates that foreign policy, as presented in these shows, allows for more manipulations, but also more variability. The internal political opposition, by contrast, is almost completely delegitimized, its goals are a priori recognized as immoral and self-serving, and, consequently, the only way left for the sovereign and their advisor is to directly suppress their internal opponents. The results of this study lead to a number of conclusions about the political culture of China as manifested in this type of TV products, and about the strategemic thinking underlying this culture.

Неопубликованные письма А. Д. Билимовича из Королевства сербов, хорватов и словенцев В. В. Шульгину как исторический источник. 1921-1926 гг.

While the history of the first wave of Russian emigration remains a significant research topic, many subjects remain poorly studied. It is important to use new sources, among which epistolary heritage of the Russian emigrants occupies an important place. The role of correspondence as a valuable historical source has been repeatedly assessed in scholarship. For the history of emigration with its limited range of sources, letters are especially valuable. However, in recent years, special attention has been drawn to the analysis not so much of individual letters, but of epistolary complexes with great informational value. The article is to analyze the letters of A. D. Bilimovich, famous economist, professor at the University of Ljubljana (1920s–40s), to his son-in-law, famous politician and journalist V.V. Shulgin . The Shulgin fond in the State Archive of the Russian Federation has preserved 18 letters for January 1921 - April 1926 (fond R-5974, series 1, file 88). Analysis of the letters has showed that they raised three main issues. Firstly, the author informed his addressee in detail about the beginning of his life and work in Slovenian Ljubljana, described how he had learned the Slovenian language and begun teaching at the local university. He characterized the pros and cons of incorporation of the Russian emigrants into the Yugoslavian environment. The second most important subject was Bilimovich’s attempt to organize a Russian publishing house in Belgrade undertaken in 1923–24. Among possible organizers-shareholders were the well-known ?migr? scholars E. V. Spektorsky, F. V. Taranovsky, An. D. Bilimovich, and others. The first book, which the publishing house hoped to publish, was Spektorsky's “Christianity and Culture.” The book was mentioned as completed in December 1923, which is an important fact in the history of creation of this well-known theological and cultural work of the Russian emigration. Previously, the chronological frameworks for its writing were quite unclear. Further publication of educational and scientific literature and fiction was planned. The publishing plans remained unrealized due to lack of funding. The third subject of the Bilimovich's letters was his organizing of “Russian Matica” – later, one of the most important public organizations of emigration in the Balkans. The emigration of many thousands of the Russians to Europe was an incentive for the organization of the “Russian Matica.” It follows from the letters that one of the main reasons for the Matica was Bilimovich's failure in the publishing field. The letters tell about Bilimovich's practical work on organizing the "Russian Matica" activities in 1924–26, on informing the public of this new organization, and on the emergence of its four branches in Yugoslav cities. Thus, the epistolary complex (letters from A. D. Bilimovich to V.V. Shulgin), which the article introduces in the scientific use for the first time, makes it possible to clarify a number of important points in the history of the Russian emigration of the first wave of the 1920s.

Jean Boden in Russian Historiography

Jean Boden (1530—1596), the famous French lawyer and politician, historian, economist and philosopher left a rich artistic legacy — ten treatises on a variety of topics: from education to the theory of sovereignty. Abroad, hundreds of works are devoted to the study of the life and work of Boden, and the first of them appeared already at the beginning of the 17th century. The question naturally arises, what was the fate of Boden's ideas in Russia? At first glance, it seems that there can be no question of direct impact. In those few decades, when the name of Boden was still thundering, his works were repeatedly published and translated into foreign languages, the political atmosphere in Russia was not conducive to the perception of the ideas of the French thinker. This was the period of the reign of Ivan the Terrible, Oprichnin, then, followed by Troubles and the accession of the first Romanovs to the Russian throne. When the Russian educated society began to actively assimilate the spiritual riches of the West, Boden's time had already passed and Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot, and others became the subject of study of the Russian Enlightenment. But nevertheless, traces of acquaintance with Boden and even his influence can be found in our country at the end of the 17th and especially in the 18th century. The article further examines the Russian tradition of studying Boden's ideas to this day.

The following are distinguished as its essential characterological features (features): openness and democracy in political communication and in relations with civil society; creativity of business and management culture, activity and scale of charitable activities.

The Relationship of Socialism, Nationalism and Pan- Africanism in the Thinking of Nyerere and Nkrumah

Nyerere is the first-generation of African nationalist, while Nkrumah is a famous ideological theorist and politician in the history of Ghana. They all saw socialism as manifestation of communitarianism. Nyerere believes that socialism is a state of mind and elaborates on the relationship between nationalism and Pan-Africanism, putting forward that unity is more important than independence and that African countries should establish federalism before achieving national independence. While Nkrumah holds the view that African socialism is the reappearance of traditional spirit in a modern environment. Pan-African Movement is the expression of African nationalism, and his socialist thought is mainly embodied in the philosophy of conscience. Socialism is the defence of local autonomy, and the goal of socialism is the decolonization of Africa.

Parliamentary activity of a famous Ukrainian politician and public figure Illia Liudvihovych Shrah is analyzed in the article based on the magazine «Ukrainian bulletin». Research is based on principles of historism and author’s objectivity. Contribution of I. Shrah in the process of creation of Ukrainian duma community in the I State Duma of the Russian empire was analyzed. His activity is shown in terms of resolution of national question by preparation of the Declaration on autonomy of Ukraine and attempt to introduce Ukrainian in educational activity of the region. Contribution of the head of Ukrainian duma faction in resolution of the issue of national education was analyzed. His activity in resolution of national question through development of Declaration on the autonomy of Ukraine and attempts to adopt a decision to introduce Ukrainian in education activity of the region is described. The contribution of the head of Ukrainian duma faction in resolution of the problem of national education is analyzed. Another important task of I. Shrah as a deputy was resolution of land issue, as peasants constituted the majority of the population of Ukraine at that time. Despite of his efforts, Ukrainian duma community has not developed one’s own draft law on resolution of land issue, however he managed to persuade his colleagues to make a demand to the government to forcefully expropriate land for peasants. He suggested to resolve land issue in three stages. First, land has to be owned by those who work on it, for this the following lands have to be transferred to peasants: state, local, monastery, church and forceful expropriation of privately-owned lands has to be done as well; second, it is crucial to develop draft law on land committees on land distribution; third, Duma has to consider organization of regional and national and territorial representatives of bodies. He considered resolution of land issue in close connection with autonomous status of Ukraine. Attention is drawn to the activity of I. Shrah on resolution of repressive activity of czarist rule on participants in revolution, Ukrainian peasants and Jewish citizens.

Листи українського історика Мирона Кордуби у фондах відділу рукописів Бібліотеки Національного інституту імені Оссолінських у Вроцлаві (Польща)

The purpose of the study is to process and publish letters of the Ukrainian statesman, scientist, publicist, historian and writer Myron Korduba (1876–1947) to Polish colleagues Stanislaw Zakszewski and Tadeusz Wyslotski, which are deposited in the manuscripts department of the library at the Ossolinski National Institute in Wroclaw. The methodological basis of the work is an interdisciplinary approach. At the same time, philosophical, general-scientifi c and specifi c-historical methods are applied as well. Methods of structural and functional system analysis of historiographical facts and the method of critical analysis of documentary material have been particularly important in research implementation. Scientifi c novelty: the letters of Myron Korduba (1876–1947), a famous politician, scholar, publicist, historian and writer, have been published for the fi rst time. The letters are stored in Ossolinski National Institute in Wroclaw. They are addressed to Korduba’s Polish colleagues Stanislav Zakszewski and Tadeusz Wyslotski. The addressees discuss private issues as well as the problems of creative work. In letters to S. Zakszewski, the Ukrainian historian congratulates his colleague on being elected a full member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Krakow as well as asks for protection in the case of his innocently arrested daughter Stefania, a student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Lviv University. In other letters he cites sources from the Lithuanian-Rus chronicle to support his hypothesis that the Polish King Jagiello intended to marry a representative of the Ukrainian noble family. In his letter to the editor-in-chief of the Krakow magazine «Ruch Slowianski», T. Wyslotski, historian discusses the confl ict that has arisen between the editorial board and Ukrainian staff. Polish observers of Ukrainian life clearly preferred moscophile publications. This resulted in publishing of contemptuous assessments of the cultural activities of patriotic citizens in Eastern Galicia. Despite the fact that the incorrectness of such an editorial policy was repeatedly explained to Wyslotski, the expected changes did not take place. Therefore, M. Korduba in his letter announced the resignation from the editorial staff. It has been concluded that cooperation between the Ukrainian historian and Polish scientists in the interwar period was well-established.

MATVIY STAKHIV’S SOCIO-POLITICAL ACTIVITY IN EMIGRATION 1949–1978

Summary. The purpose of the study is to analyze Matviy Stakhiv’s socio-political activities in exile in 1949–1978. The methodology of the study are general scientific, primarily analysis and synthesis, as well as specially-historical methods. Scientific novelty of the article is that on the basis of the critical analysis of sources and scientific literature, an attempt was made to comprehensively review the public and political activity of the famous politician, a social activist – M. Stakhiv against the post-war Ukrainian emigration environment. Conclusions. In 1939, M. Stakhiv and his family left Lviv and moved to a permanent place of residence – first in Poland and later in Germany and the United States. In exile, he continued the active socio-political work, which was in the work of the first session of the Ukrainian National Rada (UNR), two Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) meetings of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA). Also, Stakhiv was criticized by the communist regime, defended the national and political rights of Ukrainians, and reports delivered at international forums and introduced the general public with neglected pages of Ukraineʼs history, repeatedly Depicted the stages of struggle of the Ukrainian for their statehood, defined the main objectives of Ukrainian diaspora institutions. Equally critically, the former leader of the Ukrainian Socialist-Radical Party (USRP) treated the practical activity of socio-political organizations created at the initiative of the national-conscious elite of Galicia and Dnieper region, who operated abroad during the postwar period.

Short-Termism, Excessive Executive Compensation, and the Discounting Traits of Managers - by Using fMRI Experiment

It can be said that short-termism and excessive executive compensation are drawing critical and negative attention in recent years, judging from famous politician's lecture and the passage of law forcing to publicly disclose the ratio of the compensation of the chief executive officer (CEO) to the median compensation of that company's employees. We assume that these management problems are sharpened by human instinctive discounting behavior. By brain experiment of discounting behavior (neuro-science method), we scientifically reveal that stimuli like globalization mobilize new brain parts (precuneus, IPL, TPJ), sharpen human discounting behavior and in turn sharpen the management problems. The research results show that human beings predict other people's discounting behavior more sharply than their own by additionally activating new parts of brain. This in turn will sharpen their discount behavior. This chain of discounting behavior and activation of new brain parts becomes prominent in the globalization of economies involving more strangers. In order to stop the sharpening of management problems, improvement policies counter to human instincts become necessary. Our research results are closely related to resolve some of the problems by using accounting institutions. For example, since the institutionalization of the quarterly report promotes the short-termism, its rectification is necessary. Also, in order to correct the distortion of corporate compensation structure, the SEC oversees the disclosure of remuneration for middle-ranking worker and is seeking full-fledged institutionalization. Implementation of these accounting policies are strongly supported by our research results.

A linguistic analysis of sexist statements by Janusz Korwin-Mikke

In the following paper the author has performed a linguistic analysis of several chosen sexist remarks by Janusz Korwin-Mikke in order to prove how stereotypically women are regarded by the famous politician. This conservative man treats stereotypes as a proof of good order and fights to prevent women from trying to change what for thousands of years has given the general order and happiness for male sex and, in his opinion, for female sex. Significant for the author’s paper has been the importance of antifeminist’s texts within pragmatic and semantic aspect. The paper has concentrated on solely the linguistic aspect - in detail there have been discussed among other things: aphorisms and neologisms which are used by the controversial politician. In the paper the author has tried to prove that J. Korwin-Mikke’s language provokes and insults the opposite sex.

The interview is a reflection of the famous Dutch diplomat and politician Renee Jones-Bos, who in 2016–2019 worked as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Russian Federation. The main topic of the article is the need for cooperation between countries in various fields. In particular, the interview talks about interaction in the field of environmental protection, exchange of experience in the development of ‘smart cities’, and the features of the Dutch economy based on a pragmatic approach to development due to the geographical location of the country. In particular, it is noted that the achievements of the Netherlands in the field of environmental conservation are caused not only by the understanding of the importance of this topic in the issue of human survival, but, above all, are determined by the country’s characteristics: a small territory and a population that is quantitatively comparable to the population of a small Russian region. The importance of academic and university projects and exchanges as part of peopleto- people diplomacy is emphasized; the role of the undergraduate educational program in the field of Ecosystem Management ‘Eco-Management’, implemented by the Faculty of Foreign Regional Studies and Regional Administration of the IPACS of the RANEPA since 2019, is disclosed.
