Family Experience Caring for the Elderly with Diabetes Mellitus Using Sister Calista Roy's Adaptation Process Approach

Introduction: Families who care for the elderly who suffer from diabetes mellitus experience problems in the adaptation process to prevent recurrence and it is difficult to provide an understanding of the condition of the disease to the elderly. The purpose of the study was to describe in detail the experience of families caring for the elderly with diabetes mellitus using a sister calista roy adaptation process approach. Methods: This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological study approach. The population of this study were all families living at home with the elderly who suffer from diabetes mellitus in Keling Village, Kepung District with a total sample of 6 participants using purposive sampling technique. The data collection method used in-depth interview techniques. Data analysis technique using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results: The analysis of this study resulted in the theme of the process of family adaptation to care for the elderly with diabetes mellitus, including: 1) Family stimulation by understanding the condition of the disease and obligations in caring for the patient; 2) Family coping mechanisms by having a patient and calm attitude, and providing effective communication; 3) Family self-regulation by exercising self-control and caring attitude; 4) Family behavior by providing consultation on health services, meeting needs and managing stress. Conclusions: The process of family adaptation in caring for the elderly with diabetes mellitus by reflecting on the behavior of the adjustment process with various kinds of coping that is done to produce an adaptive or maladaptive behavior.

A Study of Parents’ Perceived Constraints on Participating in Outdoor Leisure Activities with Their Children in Japan

Outdoor activities have been shown to have numerous positive impacts. As chil-dren's time spent in nature decreases, it is important to move beyond just encour-aging children to go outside and instead urge the entire family to spend time to-gether in natural surroundings. While cultural norms influence family behavior, there is currently insufficient research on family leisure in Asian countries to allow comparisons. The purpose of this study is to clarify the outdoor leisure constraints of Japanese parents with children and examine the relationship between these con-straints and participation frequency in outdoor leisure activities with children. A web-based survey was employed to obtain responses from parents (n = 193) whose children were between 3 and 11 years old. This study clarified four constraining factors affecting Japanese parents: psychological, physiological, and environmen-tal; accessibility; commitment; and time. Accessibility constraints were a key driv-er in predicting the frequency of participation in outdoor leisure activities.

Preparing the successor through familial support and legitimacy: a multilevel framework

ABSTRACT This study investigates the interplay among parental support, familial legitimacy, and next-generation succession intentions in family businesses in different societal contexts. Building on attachment theory and insights from family business literature, the study underscores the influence of family at both the parental and societal levels in creating a nurturing environment that supports succession intentions. Using multilevel analyses, we show that a secure parental base of support empowers offspring to develop self-efficacy in participating in the family business (family business self-efficacy), which plays a central role in supporting succession intentions in family businesses. This relationship is strengthened by familial legitimacy – that is, how the societal values that surround family behaviours shape the relationships among parental support, self-efficacy in the family business, and succession intentions. The study provides a nuanced explanation for the family mechanisms and societal values that drive the succession intentions for family businesses’ next generations.

Computational Homogenization for Inverse Design of Surface-based Inflatables

Surface-based inflatables are composed of two thin layers of nearly inextensible sheet material joined together along carefully selected fusing curves. During inflation, pressure forces separate the two sheets to maximize the enclosed volume. The fusing curves restrict this expansion, leading to a spatially varying in-plane contraction and hence metric frustration. The inflated structure settles into a 3D equilibrium that balances pressure forces with the internal elastic forces of the sheets. We present a computational framework for analyzing and designing surface-based inflatable structures with arbitrary fusing patterns. Our approach employs numerical homogenization to characterize the behavior of parametric families of periodic inflatable patch geometries, which can then be combined to tessellate the sheet with smoothly varying patterns. We propose a novel parametrization of the underlying deformation space that allows accurate, efficient, and systematical analysis of the stretching and bending behavior of inflated patches with potentially open boundaries. We apply our homogenization algorithm to create a database of geometrically diverse fusing patterns spanning a wide range of material properties and deformation characteristics. This database is employed in an inverse design algorithm that solves for fusing curves to best approximate a given input target surface. Local patches are selected and blended to form a global network of curves based on a geometric flattening algorithm. These fusing curves are then further optimized to minimize the distance of the deployed structure to target surface. We show that this approach offers greater flexibility to approximate given target geometries compared to previous work while significantly improving structural performance.

Causes, Consequences, and Preventive Strategies for Childhood Obesity: A Narrative Review.

Childhood obesity is a complex public health challenge with profound implications for both physical and psychological well-being. A significant portion of the global population struggles with obesity. Sedentary lifestyles, increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, and socioeconomic disparities are major contributors. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these issues, leading to a surge in obesity rates among children. The consequences of childhood obesity extend beyond immediate health issues like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; obese children are at higher risk for psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, which can persist into adulthood. These health challenges also impose substantial economic burdens due to increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity. This paper synthesizes findings from various articles to provide an overview of the causes, consequences, and preventive strategies related to childhood obesity. It highlights the varied nature of obesity, including genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, and discusses the profound impact on physical health, socioemotional skills, and mental health. Additionally, it examines the global challenge of childhood obesity, particularly in developing nations, and emphasizes the importance of preventive measures, family and parental behaviors, and effective policy interventions.

Introduction. Scientific discussions on the implementation of the second demographic transition have not been completed, it is possible to identify specific features of changes in the structure of families in different countries or different social groups (for example, religious ones), but it is premature to talk about the universality of this process. In modern Russia, the social structure of families and households has changed, however, in order to capture the essence of the changes and identify the factors that have had an impact; it is necessary to constantly monitor the situation. The answers to the following questions are of scientific interest: how the structure of families in Russia has changed; what motivation is the basis for reproducing the structure of large families in different periods of demographic transition? The article presents an analysis of empirical data that allows us to identify trends in the transformation of the structure of the Russian family; to characterize the motives of reproductive behavior in large families, to determine what conditions and resources are required in large families to form or maintain well-being.Materials and methods. The information base was the data of the All-Russian population censuses for 2002, 2010 and 2020; the results of the author's research were an in-depth interview with parents from a large family in the course of the All-Russian sociological study ‘Demographic well-being of the regions of Russia’, 2021.Results. The changes in the structure of Russian families towards the increasing share of large families under the influence of demographic policy measures have been revealed, the consolidation of this trend requires the implementation of targeted measures to support the institution of a large family, which, in the authors’ opinion, should correspond to the ideal model of a ‘prosperous family’.Discussion. It is important to develop a demographic policy strategy taking into account trends in the structure of Russian families. The analysis of interviews with large families provided for the formulation of the main directions of assistance to large families, as well as to systematize social practices of members of large families aimed at preserving and developing the family well-being.

Family-based genome-wide association analysis of novelty seeking in a Korean schizophrenic population: A pilot study.

Schizophrenia (SPR) is the most devastating mental illness that causes severe deterioration in social and occupational functioning, but, the etiology remains unknown. The objective of this study is to explore the genetic underpinnings of novelty seeking behavior in schizophrenic family within the Korean population. By conducting a family-based genome-wide association study, we aim to identify potential genetic markers and variations associated with novelty seeking traits in the context of SPR. We have recruited 27 probands (with SPR) with their parents and siblings whenever possible. DNA was extracted from blood sampling of 58 individuals in 27 families and analyzed in an Illumina core exome single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array. A family-based association test (qFAM) was used to derive SNP association values across all chromosomes. Although none of the final 800,000 SNPs reached the genome-wide significant threshold of 8.45 × 10-7, the most significant 4 SNPs were within the 10-5 to 10-7. This study identifies genetic associations between novelty seeking behavior and SPR within families. RAPGEF5 emerges as a significant gene, along with other neuropsychiatric-related genes. Noteworthy genes like DRD4 and COMT did not show associations, possibly due to the focus on schizophrenic family. While shedding light on this complex relationship, larger studies are needed for robust conclusions and deeper mechanistic insights.

Traffic probability for rectangular random matrices

This article develops a rectangular version of Male’s theory of traffic probability, in which an algebra is equipped with a trace evaluated on arbitrary graphs whose edges are labeled by elements and whose vertices are subspaces. Using the language of traffic distributions, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of independent families of rectangular random matrices which are bi-permutation invariant. In the process, we take a tour of non-commutative probabilities and their random matrix models. Special attention is paid to rectangular random matrices with independent or exchangeable entries, including the existence and description of limiting ∗-distributions for a broad range of models.

Family behavior, especially parents, in applying parenting patterns to children greatly affects the growth and development of children, especially in the formation of their personality. Authoritarian parenting explains that parents tend to force children to do things according to their wishes. In this parenting pattern, parents set rules at home that must be obeyed by children. This study aims to investigate the positive and negative impacts of parental authoritarian parenting on children through a literature review. Authoritarian parenting is one of the parenting styles that tends to impose high control and is less supportive of children's independence. This literature review examines several studies that highlight the positive and negative impacts of authoritarian parenting. The results of this literature review provide a deeper understanding of how the positive and negative impacts of parental authoritarian parenting can affect children ranging from children's socioemotional, children's openness, children's morals and behavior, with implications for intervention development and further research in this area.

Coping Health Information Fatigue in the Digital Era: Tabayyun Analysis Perspective

The Indonesian Government imposed social distancing to contain the spread of novel coronavirus disease 2019. Enforcement of these regulations makes social media prevalent for seeking medical information after pandemic. Experiencing overload information can make individuals feel fatigued while processing the information they receive, including health information amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Tabayyun is an attempt to find out unclear information by checking information. This means that tabayyun process involves checking and selecting information carefully. This article is a descriptive research report that tries to describe the attitude of tabayyun to Muslim families in receiving health information, especially in the digital era. Specifically, this research aims to give details of The tabayyun attitude that must be developed in the digital era and The behavior of Muslim families when doing tabayyun via social media. How individuals behave when receiving information needs to be developed to anticipate the overload caused by the rapid flow of health information. The findings showed that attitude of tabayyun was crucial in receiving various health information. The habit of constantly checking the health information received needs to be trained and applied

Koopman neural operator as a mesh-free solver of non-linear partial differential equations

The lacking of analytic solutions of diverse partial differential equations (PDEs) gives birth to a series of computational techniques for numerical solutions. Although numerous latest advances are accomplished in developing neural operators, a kind of neural-network-based PDE solver, these solvers become less accurate and explainable while learning long-term behaviors of non-linear PDE families. In this paper, we propose the Koopman neural operator (KNO), a new neural operator, to overcome these challenges. With the same objective of learning an infinite-dimensional mapping between Banach spaces that serves as the solution operator of the target PDE family, our approach differs from existing models by formulating a non-linear dynamic system of equation solution. By approximating the Koopman operator, an infinite-dimensional operator governing all possible observations of the dynamic system, to act on the flow mapping of the dynamic system, we can equivalently learn the solution of a non-linear PDE family by solving simple linear prediction problems. We validate the KNO in mesh-independent, long-term, and zero-shot predictions on five representative PDEs (e.g., the Navier-Stokes equation and the Rayleigh-Bénard convection) and three real dynamic systems (e.g., global water vapor patterns and western boundary currents). In these experiments, the KNO exhibits notable advantages compared with previous state-of-the-art models, suggesting the potential of the KNO in supporting diverse science and engineering applications (e.g., PDE solving, turbulence modeling, and precipitation forecasting).

FAMILY BUSINESS RESILIENCE IN CRISIS: STUDY CASE ANALYSIS IN A COLLECTIVIST SOCIETY

In an era marked by persistent challenges and uncertainties, gaining insights into how family businesses navigate crises becomes imperative. While previous research has delved into the resilience of family firms, there is a notable absence of a comprehensive exploration into how inherent traits in family businesses, particularly within collectivist societies, contribute to their resilience during crises. This study aims to fill this gap and elucidate the distinctive dynamics and behaviours exhibited by family businesses in such cultural contexts. Utilising qualitative case studies and interviews, this research delves into nuanced insights into the dynamic approaches employed by these businesses. The family firms demonstrated adaptability by adjusting their operations and leveraged human resources by seeking support from family members. Additionally, they showcased creativity in enhancing market offerings. The study also reveals unique behaviours, particularly resilience through collaboration with competitors. This research makes an academic contribution by offering insights into the behaviour of family businesses within collectivist cultural contexts during crises. From a practical standpoint, it informs the development of tailored crisis management strategies for family business owners and policymakers, underscoring the significance of collaboration among competitors. The study emphasizes avenues for fostering innovative approaches, promoting resilience, and ensuring sustainability within the ever-evolving business landscape. Furthermore, it establishes a foundation for future explorations, urging further investigation into crisis adaptation strategies tailored to the cultural contexts in which family businesses are situated.

Medicaid Enrollment and Intergenerational Transfers of Wealth Among Older Adults.

Medicaid look-back periods are meant to prevent Medicaid applicants from gifting assets to meet eligibility requirements. These policies have the potential to affect families across generations given their ability to restrict the transfer of assets between parent and child. Using 2008-2018 data from the Health and Retirement Study, this study analyzed the estate planning and familial wealth transfer behaviors of a cohort of older adults aged 65 and older who became Medicaid recipients during a 10-year period. There were 8,347 respondents aged 65 and older in 2008 and 11.96% of respondents who were not Medicaid recipients at baseline became recipients over the study period. A little more than one third (36.47%) of Medicaid recipients participated in estate planning and asset transfer prior to becoming a recipient, with significant differences among select demographic characteristics. Married recipients were more likely to transfer money compared to their widowed counterparts (51.69% compared to 36.44%; p < .001) and transferred larger amounts compared to those unmarried ($16,286.94 compared to 5,379.13). White, well-educated, married, men participated in higher rates of estate planning, likely a reflection of who has access to resources to make necessary arrangements early. This analysis concludes that more structurally advantaged groups are more likely to engage in estate planning prior to Medicaid enrollment. This analysis demonstrates that some individuals may circumvent Medicaid policies like look-back periods and estate recovery, while others cannot. Policymakers should consider policies that promote the financial health of low-income families.

Through the looking glass: An alcohol advertisement every 3 minutes.

There is growing concern over the lack of regulation of alcohol advertisements on social media platforms frequented by youths. This study aims to build upon existing literature by assessing the frequency with which young Australians (17-25) are shown advertisements promoting alcohol use and the themes utilised in these advertisements. A total of 125 Australian youths (mean age 18.74 years; 74.40% female) were recruited in exchange for course credit to participate in an online study. Participants scrolled through Facebook or Instagram for a period of 30 min and screenshotted any alcohol advertisements encountered. Participants then identified the advertisement qualities (or 'themes') present in the advertisements, based on pre-identified categories. Demographic, social media usage and historical personal, peer or familial substance use behaviour data was also collected. Seventy-one university students were exposed to 796 alcohol advertisements across both platforms, and they encountered an advertisement every 2 min and 43 s on average. Most advertisements included call to action features on both Facebook (78.80%) and Instagram (71.17%). Advertisements relating to ease of access (promoting subscription/home delivery; 41.72% and 42.56%) and sales incentives (special offers, promotions, samples or bonuses with purchase; 43.70% and 46.84%) were most common across both platforms. Alcohol advertisements are highly prevalent online, particularly among Australian youth social media users. Future research should endeavour to identify whether temporal use of alcohol is a predictor of subsequent exposure to alcohol advertising on social media, and whether this exposure is likely to increase successive alcohol use behaviours.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a valuable lesson and experience for the world community in facing challenges to maintain health and daily life. The psychological and emotional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family behavior and society in general. Dental and oral health education for children other than mothers is one of the health efforts that can be carried out to increase the knowledge, willingness and skills of children and mothers as a large family in maintaining dental and oral health and hygiene. Explanations need to be given to children and mothers about why and how to maintain healthy teeth and mouth properly. Dental and oral health education delivered in the form of stories through audiovisual media and simulations will be able to create a pleasant learning atmosphere so that it is more effective in attracting attention and facilitating the process of absorbing information by parents, especially children.

Psikoedukasi Keluarga Digital terhadap Kesehatan Mental Keluarga dengan Pasien Gangguan Jiwa

This study aims to determine the usefulness of digital family psychoeducation on the mental health of families caring for mentally ill patients. The method used was a systematic review which began with selecting articles using the PIO formulation. The results showed that there was a decrease in burden, depression, anxiety, and family conflict, as well as an increase in quality of life, hope, emotional expression, attitudes, knowledge, and family behavior as caregivers. It is concluded that digital family psychoeducation can be beneficial for the mental health of families caring for mentally ill patients. THE RELATIONSHIP OF FAMILY BEHAVIOR WITH THE RISK OF STUNTING AMONG TODDLER IN RT 64 RW 17 KELURAHAN 16 ULU SEBERANG ULU II DISTRICT PALEMBANG

ABSTRACT Background: Stunting is a condition where a child experiences growth failure that occurs in the body and brain due to long-term malnutrition which results in the child being shorter than normal children of his age. The latest data also shows that around 9 million Indonesian toddlers are currently stunted. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between family behavior and the risk of stunting in toddlers in RT 64, Kelurahan 16 Ulu, Seberang Ulu IIPalembang District in 2023. Methodology: The research method used was an analytical survey with a cross sectional design. The number of samples in the study was 32 respondents. Furthermore, the data that has been collected is processed and analyzed using the Chi-Square statistical test with a significance level (p&lt;0.05). In the results: the Chi-Square statistical test showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge (p=0.038), attitudes (p=0.034), and actions (p=0.012) with the risk of stunting in RT 64 sub-district 16 Ulu, Seberang Ulu II District. Conclusion: This research shows that family knowledge, attitudes and actions are related to the risk of stunting. It is hoped that future researchers will examine the relationship between family behavior and the incidence of stunting in toddlers with different designs and research methods.

How and when does family incivility steer employees towards work delays: implications for HR

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the negative spillover effects of family incivility on employees’ ability to meet their work-related deadlines. Furthermore, we examine emotional exhaustion as a mediator and emotional intelligence as a moderator in this process.Design/methodology/approachWe test our predictions through a multisource, time-separated data collection involving 161 employee-supervisor dyads working in various hospitality sector organizations in Pakistan – a relatively understudied context where the hospitality industry is struggling.FindingsThe findings of our study indicate that exposure to rude family behavior hinders employees’ ability to complete work tasks on time, as mediated by their emotional exhaustion. However, this harmful process can be curtailed if employees can rely on their emotional intelligence to regulate their own emotions and those of their family members.Practical implicationsThe findings of this study provide pertinent insights for HR managers and organizations to help their employees deal with family issues. Moreover, organizations can benefit from introducing training programs that improve employees’ emotional intelligence and increase the likelihood that they do not default on their work deadlines.Originality/valueThis study extends the limited existing family incivility research by investigating its spillover effects on employees’ ability to meet work deadlines, a previously unexplored relationship. In addition, we highlight the roles of two pertinent aspects: emotional intelligence and emotional exhaustion.
