Henry Higgins, in My Fair Lady, addresses a rhetorical aria to the audience: Why can't a woman be more like a man? In loosely comparable fashion, a growing nationwide chorus is singing, Why can't college teaching be more like tra ditional classroom pedagogy? The principal target in that com plaint is faculty research. In particular, there is an undercurrent of dissatisfac tion with the natural sciences, where research at the cutting edge requires big machines, big money, and big teams for the exploration of exotic frontiers.
